one-pot recipes si mpl i f y k itchen clea nup ARTICLE CONNIE MCFALL CLARK WHETHER YOU’RE WORKING FROM HOME OR GOING TO THE OFFICE THESE DAYS, MOST OF US REALLY LIKE TO KEEP A CLEAN, UNCLUTTERED KITCHEN. Even though those wonderful three-course meals are a treat to cook and to serve to guests, most likely there will be a multitude of pots, pans, utensils and dishes to clean up. There are many one-pot recipes you can enjoy throughout the month. Plus the added benefit of keeping the washing up and scrubbing to a minimum. Those counters can be easily wiped down and then it is lights out to enjoy the rest of your day or evening! Penne pasta in a skillet. This quick and delicious pasta meal is made with penne pasta, fresh tomato sauce and sausage - wonderful Italian-style comfort food. You can cook the pasta, drain the water and add the meat of your choice and a nice tomato or marinara sauce. Add seasonings, heat the mixture and you’re done! Round beef roast prepared with carrots and yams in French Oven. This one-pot meal is another easy clean-up. Brown the roast in the pan and then add broth and seasonings. Bake until almost done and then add the vegetables. As those soften, you can enjoy the mouth-watering smells wafting from your kitchen. Fresh vegetables create a mouthwatering stew ready to be heated in a slow cooker. For those vegetarians or healthy eaters, this dish is easy and requires no constant stirring or watching the clock. Use veggies that can be thoroughly washed, perhaps peeled (or not) and added to broth to later enjoy a warm, crispy or soft mix of your favorite ingredients with a crusty artisan slice of bread. 14

Lovage – This herb tastes like celery with undertones of parsley and hint of anise. It is mild enough to use with fish and poultry, but has just enough spice to make it interesting. Mint – You can use the wide varieties of mint in drinks like mojitos or mint juleps as well as iced tea. Beware that it is an invasive plant and spreads easily. Parsley – This mild bitter herb can be used as a garnish for food but also helps dishes like stews achieve a more balanced flavor. Rosemary – Add this flavorful herb to poultry, meats and vegetables. This plant will grow into a full-sized bush. Sage – This aromatic herb is great for seasoning meats, sauces, and vegetables but it does have a tendency to overpower other flavors. The bees will love it! Thyme – Often used for flavoring egg, bean and vegetable dishes, this ingredient is used in Mediterranean, Italian and Provençal French cuisines. Pair it with lamb, poultry, and tomatoes. Winter Savory – This herb compliments fish, beans, and poultry with its intense flavor. It is used to flavor liqueurs and makes a beautiful garnish to any salad.

ARTIST’S PALETTE LIGHTEN UP YOUR HOME TO SPREAD MORE JOY THIS SEASON

ARTICLE WHITNEY GRUNDER

spruce up your space for spring SPRING IS AMONG US AND NO MATTER HOW SHORT-LIVED THE SEASON WE WELCOME THE CHANGE OF PACE. Below are some tips to swap out the warm winter vibes for brighter, invigorating tones to spread positive energy all throughout your home. A WHIFF OF SPRING Swap out candle accents for floral arrangements that will add pops of color and your favorite scents of the season. Shop your local market for the freshest finds or, if you are on a tight budget, opt for smaller and less expensive selections at your nearest grocery store. Think vibrant greenery with white, yellow, pink, or purple shades. You name it – pick your favorites! You can also opt for fake plants and add in your own natural scents with a room diffuser using essential oils in lavender, lemon, grapefruit, or other energizing fragrances.

18

Boerne Lifestyle | March 2021

LIGHTEN UP Time to pack away the heavier throws and cozy winter blankets for next year. Go for more of a minimalist look with clean, sleek, more light-weight furniture. Instead of dark woods and metals, add in lighter toned shades. Think whites, light greys, or softer pastels hues. This can also be done without changing all of your furniture. For example, try changing your pillow covers, removing curtains, or adding a white tray to your coffee table. Find ways to bring natural lighting into your home so you can bask in the sunshine and welcome in the warmth. MAKE SPACE With the cooler months behind us, continue with your theme of a much lighter and brighter ambiance. Clear off shelves, rearrange your coffee table (maybe even add a new coffee table book that makes you smile), and get rid of the clutter. Spring cleaning is a great way to make space for the year ahead. Box up your once beloved favorites and donate the no longer needed items to those in need to spread your wealth and pay it forward. Invite room for playful energy and fun!

The great thing is that camper vans are small enough for an amateur to maneuver easily on the road. Parking and tolls are as convenient as any other automobile due to their conservative size. Don't let that fool you though, these vans come packed with all the space you need. Some will surprise you with small kitchens, showers, or an extra bed— you name it! We challenge you to dream of rolling hills, perfect views, new territories, and endless memories. This safe option for traveling might be the perfect excuse to safely get-away in an exhausting time. TIPS FOR REMODELING OR NEW CONSTRUCTION

ARTICLE HEATHER HUEBNER

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN INDUSTRY? I have been working in the design field for about six years. I have a Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University in Environmental Design and a Master’s degree in Land Economics and Real Estate. After graduation, I worked in urban redevelopment and decided to take a break when my husband and I started a family. When our youngest son was born, I started helping friends rearrange their furniture and the rest is history. Today I offer full design services including furniture, cabinet design, simple floor plans and finishes for new homes and remodels. I have two designers, Leslie Lonsdale and Cassie Tenney on the team to help with design and project management. I have also been told that I should include marriage counseling on my resume, for clients that cannot seem to agree on what they want for their home.
