Chris & Donald Moore LUXURY AND LEGACY ARTBAG ARTICLE BY KEISHA VIRTUE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC VITALE PHOTOGRAPHY MUST SEE | SHOPPING16

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS YOU'VE LEARNED FROM YOUR FATHER?

Relationship. My father taught me to treat people fairly, whether they're spending a dol lar or a thousand dollars. You have to create relationships with customers instead of just going after a quick buck.  That is what has kept us in business for the past 90 years. Trust. You also have to be honest and build trust. The bulk of our business these days is our repair and custom-made work. So, it’s essential to tell the customer exactly what we can and can't do. And that helps to temper expectations. There are times when custom ers bring in bags, and we advise them against doing the repair because the cost would far exceed the price or the value of the bag itself. But sometimes it’s a question of sentimental ity. There's some history there. For example, we have revived leather briefcases of attor neys that were either heirlooms, or the first briefcase that they got when they graduated from law school.

Jaqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Cicely Tyson, Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton. What do these names have in common? All are intertwined in the indelible history of Artbag, the storied handbag sale and resto ration business long located on Madison Avenue. For nearly 90 years, the shop’s owners and artisans have been trusted with the high-end purses of celebrities and New York denizens alike. From repairing shred ded silk lining, mending a water-damaged Birkin or refurbishing a treasured leather heirloom briefcase, there has been very little Artbag’s experts have not been able to handle. This unswerving dedication to excellence has made them a New York legacy, with loyal customers across the country. But how does one build a legacy? Often, the cre ation of legacy is organic. Perhaps, it was when Hillel Tenenbaum – the original owner of Artbag and for mer professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology – saw potential in Donald Moore, a newly married 18-year-old porter at the store. Mr. Tenenbaum taught the young man the craft of making bags every night after work. And Donald, working 14-hour days, absorbed the skill such fine work entailed. After honing his craft for decades, Donald was able to buy a stake in the company and, eventually in 1993, become sole owner of Artbag.   Donald Moore himself came from a long line of black entrepreneurs. His grandfather had the first Black-owned general store in Elizabeth City, NC. Both his grandfather and father also were farming contractors who provided employment for black farm workers. This work ethic and staunch commit ment to quality was something that was built into Donald Moore through generations, and which he passed to his son – and current owner – Chris. After being a New York institution for nearly 90 years, Artbag recently moved to South Florida on July 25. Their new location in Coral Springs makes fiscal and logistic sense. The company had already been serving clientele across the country for years, who mailed in their precious bags for Artbag to repair and rejuvenate. And many of the company’s New York clients also have homes in South Florida. Chris Moore took time from his busy sched ule in the middle of Artbag’s relocation to tell us more about the legacy of the business.

Excellence. Commit to providing superior quality service. Have the integrity to go the extra mile when others won’t do so. That's what separates us from our competitors, and what's going to keep the legacy going. Many of our competitors won't go that extra step. And over the decades we’ve accumulated specialized knowl edge that others do not have, which keeps our name at a certain level above everyone else. 99.5 times out of 100, my customers walk out the door happy.

YOU COME FROM A LONG LINE OF BLACK ENTREPRENEURS. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE SECRET TO YOUR FAMILY'S LEGACY? Whatever you choose to do, do it to your utmost abil ity. Very often, legacy isn’t planned. It’s created naturally by passing down certain values and ways of thinking. My great-grandfather started off as a farmer who then moved into owning his own general store and his own rooming house. And he taught my grandfather by exam ple to work for yourself. I remember my grandfather tell ing me when I was nine years old, “You can work just as

WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR PRIVATE LABEL BAGS?

We stay on top of the latest trends by attending the Italian fashion shows and we incorporate some of these elements into our creations. We also keep our longtime customers top of mind. Many of our customers over the years have grown up with us. Many of them are seniors. So, they're not looking to carry heavy bags regardless of trends; they need something that's going to be com fortable. If we see a bag we like in Italy but it comes with a chain, we omit the chain and make it with a shoulder strap instead, and perhaps make it a little bit smaller to accommodate our customers’ taste. We also consider the Pantone color of the season.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE TODAY OF CREATING QUALITY PRODUCTS THAT LAST?

If you buy quality, then quality will take care of you, as long as you maintain it. Since COVID, I’ve seen many designers lower their level of quality. There are certain designers, whose names I won’t divulge, where you can feel a distinct difference in the material of a bag they made 20 years ago, com pared to a bag that they created in the last two or three years ago. It's not as well made. It’s not as thick. The stitching is not as small and fine as it once was. And many designers, whether they're luxury brands or not, no longer stand behind their merchandise. For instance, if you take your bag back to the original manufacturer because you have an issue, sometimes they won’t repair it. But you don’t want to trust your bag with just anyone. You have to go to a profes sional, and that's where Artbag fills that void. hard for yourself as for a boss, but if you work hard for yourself, you'll make more money.”

Once you had that spark ignited inside you, and you see how your grandfather was able to build something, and then your father was able to build something, then you start to build too because it's just expected. We didn't realize how customers viewed our store until an article was written that said that we were relocating our business. We had customers coming in in tears because they grew up with my dad. There were generations upon generations that have seen us grow and they've grown with us.

HOW DO YOU HOPE TO KEEP ARTBAG’S LEGACY GOING? We're going to do the same thing we’ve always done. Provide quality with integrity while we con tinue to build relationships with our customers.

6. Cleaning a bag’s exterior is material-specific. Firstly, I urge customers not to buy colored patent leather, since color transfer can occur even when it’s in your closet. To clean patent leather, use Lemon Pledge or white vinegar. Either one works very well. For leather bags, use a neutral shoe cream from brands like Meltonian or Moneysworth & Best. Follow the directions and test it on the bottom of the bag first. Most importantly, never use a name brand cleaner from one designer on a different bag. It could ruin the leather.

5. Ladies should clean their bags out 2-3 times per month. It’s absolutely amazing what one finds in the bag when they start to clean it. And it makes the bag heavy for no reason.

CHRIS’ TIPS ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF BAGS

4. Do not overstuff your bags when you use them . The first things to go on bags are either the handles or the zippers. Zippers are very temperamental. There are two things that we don’t guarantee: zippers and cleaning and polishings. Because both of those can be ruined the first day out.

1. Rotate your bags . First and foremost, no matter who makes the bag, if you wear it time and time again, it will break down. Whether you spent $100 or a $100,000 on the bag, if you wear it too much, it will break down.

3. When not in use, stuff your bags with old t-shirts or pil lowcase. But not to the point of capacity; just enough that the bag maintains its shape.

2. Inspect your bags when they are not in use. For instance, if the bag’s handles have morphed into a different shape. address the problem immediately. Also be aware of when the stitching starts to pull, and take care of it right away.

FASHION FORWARD | STYLE + BEAUTY Raxann Chin Photography by Berette Macaulay 26

“I passionately wanted to express myself artistically, it was bursting from the seams. I knew all I needed to do was start, and figure it out one step at a time.” Raxann’s fashion journey has been organic – something deeply innate, iterative, and experimental. She started mod eling in local fashion shows in Jamaica from the age of 4 and later became a top 10 semifinalist in the Miss Jamaica World Beauty Pageant in 1994. During high school, despite her science focus, she constantly haunted the art department, feeling a deep draw towards the creative even then. When a fashion career emerged as a serious business con sideration, her previous finance experience on Wall Street was the perfect synergy to her innate design talent. She knew she had what it took to be a successful designer and she

BORN TO DESIGN

TACTILE BEGINNINGS “Time pauses for me when I close my eyes, and smell and touch fabric.”

When she decided to leave the financial sector and launch out with her own fashion line, Raxann traveled to Jamaica to decompress and rejuvenate, as she finalized her designs. To relax before deciding on the creative direction of the collection, she snorkeled at Negril’s fabled 7-mile beach, where the water is so clear, it sparks joy in one’s soul. While in the water, witnessing the vibrant colors of the coral reef, dappled with flecks of light and warmth from the sun, Raxann’s “creative antennas were acutely peaked”. By the time she surfaced (after what seemed like an hour) she had chosen her color palette and the direc tion for the designs. At the debut of her first collection at Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica, the models walked to Caribbean Blue by Enya. Raxann assured me, “It was the blue Caribbean Sea of Jamaica that awakened my senses and I had to pay it homage.”

Like many children growing up in Jamaica circa 2000, Raxann remembers accompanying her mother to the seam stress. The multitude of colors and textures paired with department store catalogues and fashion magazines; the measurements and fittings; the burst of excitement upon receiving and trying on custom outfits, all opened up a world of possibility and imagination for the young girl.

Raxann Chin is an award-winning fashion designer and the owner of Femheka couture clothing line – a couture brand known for producing luxury fashion products and expe riences. She is also an accomplished costume designer and visual artist with extensive experience in film, tele vision, theater, opera and high-profile live events. With a Communications and Media Art degree and a decade of experience working on Wall Street, she pivoted after the financial crisis of 2008 to realize her long-held dream of a career in fashion. Within two years of launching Femheka in 2012, her gowns were featured on the red carpets of events including the Academy Awards and the Cannes Film Festival. Her film and television experience includes productions such as American Trial – The Eric Garner Story, Disney’s Keeping Up with the Claus, and the independent series Cady Did, for which she and her veteran collaborator Christopher Lawrence were nominated for Best Costume Design at the 12th annual Indie Series Awards in 2022. We caught up with Raxann to dig deeper into the woman behind the designer and her personal journey to achieving her dream.

THE METAMORPHOSIS OF A YOUNG JAMAICAN GIRL INTO AN ACCLAIMED FASHION DESIGNER CONTINUED >

CARIBBEAN BLUE

As a young girl who describes herself as “girly and sparkly”, Raxann loved treasure hunting through her mother’s room for scraps of fabric to make doll’s clothes. As a teenager, she would bleach her jeans, paint her sneakers, and convert her uncle’s shirts into dresses. Style was an innate part of who she was.

“I have a vivid memory at 4 years old when my father took me on a glass bottom boat. I honestly was so awed that the memory rooted forever.”

When asked how she successfully moved from business to fashion, without formal training in the latter, Raxann opined:

She particularly loves to make women feel spe cial, “like goddesses”. That is what gives her the greatest satisfaction.

Looking at some of Raxann’s designs, the subtle draping of the fabric over the model’s curves, end ing in a single strap over one shoulder is highly rem iniscent of Greek and Roman mythology. Mythology is all about storytelling and ancient archetypes, and it is central to Raxann’s design ethos: “The signature draping, coiling, flow and regal elements of the brand echo the blend of the past, present and future, with mythology as its backdrop.”

FASHION FORWARD | STYLE + BEAUTY28

“The most important thing to know as a visual artist is to anchor yourself in your art and become obsessive about the details. To be a great visual designer, you need to be unwavering with getting the details right. Whatever you design, produce it at its highest quality.  Be yourself. Seek inspiration but don’t imitate. And always stay curious!”

ELEMENTS OF SUCCESS

“As a creative, I do a myriad of things that I’ve never been taught formally but saw in my mind. I reverse-en gineered it and applied myself and kept doing it until I got the results I wanted. For example, when I was getting married, I knew what I wanted my shoe to look like. I couldn’t locate what I desired, so I bought a shoe with a similar structure, bought the rhinestones separately, then brought it to a shoemaker and walked him through the design elements needed reinforced.”

“Whether I was on Wall Street guiding invest ments, designing for my clients through my fash ion line, or creating costumes for a film or stage production, I have always viewed myself as being a collaborator with whoever the beneficiary of my skills may happen to be.”

For Raxann, this means leaving a legacy, mentoring others in order to pass the baton. She eventually would like to teach business of fashion courses, conveying her combined creative and financial knowledge to help others succeed.

RAXANN’S ADVICE FOR ASPIRING DESIGNERS

For Raxann, excellent customer service is key. The desire to ensure that her clients are always satisfied is deeply ingrained and a major factor in her success. Listening carefully to discover exactly what her client needs, consistency and discipline are also critically important. To achieve purpose though, involves more than thinking of oneself.

“The art of fashion and costume design is everything to me because it plays such an essential role in storytelling. Our clothing is our history. Capturing what we wear at any given moment is the best time capsule we have.”

THE MUSE OF MYTH Being able to fuse the 3 deepest loves of my life –  fashion, art and mythology – in my brand is a dream come true.”

stepped out in faith, combining her considerable skills and savoir-faire to make her dream come true.

– Raxann Chin
