LIFESTYLE LETTER
Make It Your Own I’ve always thought it was interesting how two people can walk into the same store, see the same clothes, and walk out with completely different outfits. What one person loves, another might never wear. And that’s part of what makes style so personal. Style isn’t just about following trends or having a certain look. It can be as simple as the clothes we feel most comfortable in, the way we decorate our homes, or the jewelry we wear. So much of what we like is shaped by our personality, experiences, and the things we enjoy. Here in Blue Springs and Grain Valley, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs, or simply drawing inspiration from our community, there’s plenty to spark your creativity. I hope as you look through this issue, you find something that catches your eye or inspires you to try something a little different. Maybe it’s a new outfit, jewelry, a different way to style something you already own, or trying a new service. Sometimes, finding your style is simply about discovering what works for you and making it your own. At the end of the day, the best style is the kind that feels like you.

Whether you’re celebrating a new engagement, an anniversary, or a new chapter together, today’s rings are as unique as the stories they represent. While some are drawn to classic cuts, others embrace bold designs, unique settings, and details that reflect their personal style. At Kennedy’s Custom Jewelers, couples can explore a wide array of styles while also working with the team to create one-of-a-kind custom rings designed to tell their special story. “Jewelry is so much more than just diamonds and gold,” second-generation jeweler, Trisha KennedyThompson shared. “It often signifies some of life’s most precious moments, and there is nothing better than being able to be a part of those moments with our customers.” With more than 43 years of experience serving the Kansas City area, Kennedy’s continues to provide exceptional service. With in-house custom design, estate jewelry, bridal collections, jewelry and watch repair, and an onsite certified gemologist, the team is there to guide couples through every step of the process to finding a ring that is uniquely their own. While contemporary settings and vintage-inspired details remain popular, Trisha mentioned that yellow gold is making a strong comeback. Marquise cut diamonds are also becoming quite popular. For those beginning to search for their perfect ring, Trisha encourages couples to explore different styles. “Start by looking online to figure out what you like, then come in to try on different metal colors and ring styles. You will never know what really looks good on you until you see it on your hand.” Whether you’re choosing a ring for the first time or looking for something new, the right ring is one that feels personal to you and your story. The Heart of Salon Bellezzio How Shanon Van Dyne balances business, community, and familyfirst values with a passion for empowering others
18
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | BEAU T Y
“Can I phone a friend?” Shanon Van Dyne asked when questioned about her leadership style. Stylist Brooke Harris answered without hesitation. “She’s like a mom. She always wants the best for you and is so supportive. She doesn’t make you feel like she’s above you or better than you, or like you’re less than her. She really wants you to be successful.” That warm, supportive environment is something Shanon Van Dyne has worked hard to establish at Salon Bellezzio, a hair salon with two locations in Blue Springs. Since taking ownership, she has expanded Salon Bellezzio into a vibrant hub for local beauty and self-care while keeping family and community at the forefront. Shanon is married to her husband, Jimmy, and has two children, Kaaihue and Kawika. She places immense value on the balance between being a mom, wife, and owner. For her, family always comes first. “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success starts with your priorities,” Shannon explained. “My husband and I chose to do life together, so protecting our
marriage and making time for each other has to come first. A strong marriage creates the foundation for a strong family and a successful business. I’ve also learned that I can’t do everything alone. Recognizing the strengths of my team, trusting them with responsibilities, and delegating effectively not only helps the business grow but also allows me to lead with greater purpose both at work and at home.” This balance is what Shanon strives to enhance every day at Salon Bellezzio. It is the support from her family and dedicated stylists that keep the salon running smoothly. The trust in her team and friendship between stylists has created a culture built on encouragement. While Shanon’s sons and husband help with tasks like remodeling both salons, she wants her stylists to become confident in their craft and to grow at Salon Bellezzio. “My biggest core value is that my staff succeeds not only behind the chair, but as women,” she said. “I see things in them that they don’t see in themselves.”
When it comes to hair care, Salon Bellezzio offers many different services. Haircuts, bang trims, stylings, blowouts, and shampooing are some popular services that the stylists offer. Other hair services include highlights, hair coloring, extensions, scalp treatments, perms, conditioning, and balayages. With growing demands, they have plans to offer lash extensions and spray tans in the near future. Beyond salon services, the Salon Bellezzio team also gives back to the community by partnering with local foundations. They select a new organization each quarter to support, and organize fundraisers for clients facing health challenges, such as breast cancer treatments. However, there is more to a stylist’s job than hair care. The stylists at Salon Bellezzio want their connection to be experienced and felt by clients as they walk in the door.
“My biggest core value is that my staff succeeds not only behind the chair, but as women.” “We make sure to greet clients immediately because that is when they feel the most vulnerable,” Shanon shared. “We work to make sure needs are met, especially when it comes to listening. We hear about the deaths, the divorces, the marriages, and the babies. It’s a rewarding career and we make sure our space is a no judgement zone.” With each service, Shanon and the team of stylists at Salon Bellezzio are dedicated to helping clients look and feel their best. Built on the foundation of family, friendship, and support, the salon continues to be a place where style and community meet.

Kelly Burgess
Heather Clark founded AAfire Boutique three years ago, after feeling called to create a business that combined her faith with a desire to give back. Inspired by Matthew 5:16, she uses her boutique as a way to serve others, supporting orphanages and mission work around the world. “The entire purpose of my business is to support and serve those in need,” Heather shared. When it comes to style, Heather loves blending classic Western details with bohemian touches and elevated fabrics. “This outfit makes me feel strong, beautiful, confident, and feminine,” she says. It’s the ultimate versatile autumn look, perfect for a country concert, a winery date, or a weekend getaway to Nashville. The Look: A floral, lace-up corset midi dress paired with an embroidered Western hat and ivory Western boots. Where to Shop: Queen Bee Boutiques and Artisan’s Corner on Wall in Harrisonville.
Driven by a love for affordable, comfortable fashion, Kelly Burgess started her boutique while working as a teacher. She wanted to bring stylish pieces that wouldn’t break the bank and could easily carry over from a workday in the classroom to the weekend. “My goal is always to source versatile pieces that integrate effortlessly with standard staples in your closet,” Kelly shared. “A great top can be worn on its own or layered with a cardigan as the weather turns.” Her featured fall look gives an instant confidence boost. “This is something that could be worn anywhere, which I love about it.” The Look: A blue and white gingham top paired with fan-favorite jeans, a signature Elizabeth Kelly necklace, and personal accessories. Pink Lemonade
Wild With Grace Boutique
Ryan Youngstrom
Angela Hart
After leaving corporate America to stay home with her son following a rare medical diagnosis, Ryan Youngstrom started Pink Lemonade as a creative outlet. “It gave me something to call mine and another title besides ‘mom,’” Ryan shared. Her boutique kept her creative spirit alive and provided therapeutic balance through heavy life moments. Ryan brings her creative passion into seasonal fashion ready for tailgate season and Red Friday. “This outfit is the epitome of cute and casual,” she adds. “It is so comfortable, but doesn’t lack style.” The Look: Mineral wash t-shirt dress embellished with a KC arrowhead corner design. Where to Shop: Queen Bee Boutiques and online.
As a full-time real estate agent and mom, Angela Hart decided three years ago that she didn’t have to settle for just one passion. She launched Wild With Grace Boutique on the belief that no matter your age, you can be stylish and trendy. “If you feel good, you’ll do good. When I wear an outfit that makes me feel amazing, it adds a pep in my step,” Angela said. She chose her boutique name because she believes everyone can have a little wild in them, and a whole lot of grace too. That confidence comes through in the fall look she chose. “Depending on how you style it and the shoes you pair it with, this is an outfit you can wear to work or an evening event,” she explained. The Look: Avocado green sleeveless sweater top and cream with black velvet polka dot skirt paired with tan suede Corky’s boots and a gold heart necklace. Where to Shop: Queen Bee Boutiques and online.

The Years that Shaped Blue Springs How a small town grew into a community people recognize and call home Today, Main Street in Blue Springs is a place where people gather. It’s home to local shops, community events and businesses owners who give downtown its character. But long before parades, restaurants and well-known coffee shops, this stretch of town was where Blue Springs began to take shape. Reflecting on his move to Blue Springs almost 50 years ago, Galen Ericson recalled walking down Main Street during a snowfall, “It just felt like home. That was the moment we decided to stay.” In our July issue, we sat down with Blue Springs Historical Society Archivist Kay Burrus and explored the community’s earliest years, from the first settlers to Blue Springs officially becoming a city in 1880. This month, we’re continuing that journey and looking at how a quiet town grew into a thriving community so many of us call home.
A GROWING COMMUNITY
For many years, Blue Springs was shaped by farming, family businesses, and familiar faces. But more families settled here and the community grew. In 1903, telephones arrived and by 1905, the Blue Springs Public School District built its first brick schoolhouse at 16th and Vesper. “This was the schoolhouse for almost 20 years,” Kay shared. Businesses were also growing alongside the community and establishing themselves here. One well-known local dairy business

was Adams Dairy, established by E.C. Adams in 1917. For more than 50 years, Adams Dairy was a familiar name, serving families and becoming part of the town’s story. Life around the community was starting to look different. Electricity became available in 1920, and new forms of entertainment soon followed. “The Roxy Theater on Main Street became a popular spot for a night out,” Kay noted. While Blue Springs was still a close-knit community, these changes were signs of what was ahead. The town was beginning to grow beyond its original boundaries, creating new opportunities while still holding onto the community connections.
STRENGTH THROUGH HARD TIMES
Blue Springs was not alone in facing seasons of change and hardship. The Great Depression brought difficult years for many local families,

but neighbors found ways to support one another. Residents created “community grab bags,” sharing food and necessities with those in need. Not long after, many local men and women served as World War II began, while others supported the war effort closer to home. The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant opened in 1941, creating jobs for residents while producing supplies for troops. Even through challenging times, Blue Springs came together and continued moving forward.

After the war, Blue Springs entered a period of rapid growth. With the completion of Interstate 70 in 1967, the city was now directly connected to surrounding areas, helping bring more families to Blue Springs. “In 1960, there were approximately 2,500 people living in Blue Springs,” Kay shared. “By 1970, that number had more than doubled to nearly 7,000. It continued to grow, reaching approximately 25,000 residents by 1980. The population exploded, and that is when we became a ‘bedroom community.’” While many residents commuted elsewhere for work, they chose Blue Springs to settle down and raise their children. New neighborhoods were built, schools expanded, and more local businesses opened their doors. The phrase “bedroom community” became part of Blue Springs’ identity, but it never told the whole story. Behind the growing neighborhoods were small businesses, teachers, coaches, volunteers, and families who helped shape the community. “What hasn’t changed is the friendliness. That spirit still runs through this community,” Galen shared. Blue Springs was never just a spot to sleep at the end of the day—it was the place where people built their lives. INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 Honeycrisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
