LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Taste of Home As the maple trees around Lake Jacomo and along Adams Dairy Parkway turn shades of gold and red, and the temperatures finally dip, fall starts to feel like it has (finally) arrived. And with it comes some of the foods and drinks we look forward to consuming this time of year. This October, we are celebrating what we consider to be one of our most delectable issues of the year, featuring local businesses and some of the foods and drinks that make our communities unique. We’re also sharing one of my favorite recipes. It’s something my wife makes and is one I always look forward to. My hope is that you will enjoy it just as much as I do. For me, the smells of fall are tied to memories of cozy evenings in my childhood home. That aroma of fall candles, the sound of leaves crunching during an evening walk, and the crisp autumn air all bring back a sense of nostalgia and comfort. One of my family’s favorite traditions was gathering together for a pot of homemade chili on those first truly chilly evenings. It was the kind of meal that didn’t just fill you up but warmed you from the inside out. There is something special about the way food brings people together. Whether you’re enjoying a weeknight meal at your favorite local spot or hosting a cozy dinner for loved ones at home, some of the best memories are made around the table. Here’s to gathering, connection, and savoring every single bite this fall.

Cozy Crockpot LASAGNA SOUP ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATARINA BREWER

Cool fall weather is here, which means it’s soup season. Coming home on a chilly evening and enjoying a warm bowl of soup hits the spot. This Crockpot Lasagna Soup recipe is one of our favorite go-tos, especially when we’re wanting Italian but don’t have the time to put together lasagna. This recipe has all the rich and delicious layers of a traditional lasagna dish without the hassle of layering, making it a low-stress meal for busy days. Preparation doesn’t take long, and it’s a fun recipe to get young kiddos involved with, as they love snapping the noodles into pieces and helping dump ingredients into the crockpot. Set your crockpot and let it do the work while your home fills with an incredible, cozy aroma. By dinner time, you have a warm, crowd-pleasing meal ready to serve!

Cozy Crockpot Lasagna Soup

INGREDIENTS:

16

• 1 lb ground beef • 1 medium yellow onion, diced • 4 cloves of minced garlic • 24 oz marinara sauce • 32 oz beef broth • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 1 tsp dried basil • 1 tsp dried parsley • 1 tsp dried oregano • 1 tsp paprika

• • • • •

½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup mozzarella cheese ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 10-12 lasagna sheets, broken into bite-size pieces (about 1-inch to 2-inch pieces) • Fresh basil leaves

NOTES: • Break lasagna noodles into small pieces before putting them in the crockpot. Smaller pieces are easier to fit on a spoon, making the soup easier to eat without needing to cut large noodles in your bowl. • To add some extra protein, mix in cottage cheese when you are adding heavy whipping cream. • If you want to add a little more spice, use ½ lb of ground beef and ½ lb of sausage.

DIRECTIONS: 1. In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook and crumble ground beef. Drain any excess grease. 2. In a crockpot, add the cooked beef, diced onion, minced garlic, marinara sauce, beef broth, Italian seasoning, basil, parsley, oregano, salt, pepper, paprika. Stir well, cover and cook on high for 3 hours (low for 5-6 hours). 3. Give it a good stir and then mix in heavy cream, mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese. 4. Add in broken lasagna noodles, making sure they are fully submerged in the liquid. 5. Cover and cook on high for another 30-45 minutes, or until noodles are cooked to your liking. 6. Serve hot and top with cheese and fresh basil.

THE ultimate TACO TUESDAY tour An adventure through KCK’s top taquerias

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATARINA BREWER

Kansas City is known for a lot of things. At the top of the list is usually barbecue, along with jazz, hundreds of historic fountains, sports teams, and a few other traditions that make KC unique and feel like home. But after recently hopping on the Kansas City Kansas Taco Trail Bus Tour, I think tacos deserve a spot in that conversation. With more than 60 locally owned taquerias, restaurants and food trucks across KCK, there is no shortage of places to explore. From smoky carnitas to crispy quesabirria, the options seem endless. But knowing exactly where to start, or even where to go, can feel a little overwhelming. That is where the Red Machine Party Bus comes in. The idea started when friends Robert Galicia and Mark Coronado used one of their buses to shuttle a group out for dinner. “The conversation led to who truly has the best tacos in KC,” Robert explained. “We visited three different local spots, and the idea was born.” What started as a conversation eventually became the KCK Taco Trail Bus Tour. Today the tour gives KC locals and visitors a chance to experience a handful of the many taquerias that make KCK such a destination for tacos. “Each of our tours is different. Normally, a tour offers one type of taco. So you might only have al pastor tacos but visit four different taquerias that serve al pastor,” Robert said. El Poll Rey is one of the restaurants featured on the KCK Taco Trail Bus Tour. The restaurant was recently named to The New York Times’ list of the 41 Greatest Mexican Restaurants in the United States.

For our experience, we took the “Pick Your Own Taco” tour, giving us a chance to choose between two different tacos at each destination. In total, we hit four local taquerias: A&J Molcajete, Tacos El Tio, Taqueria El Poblano, and El Torito Grill. Between each stop, the Red Machine Party was filled with music, laughs and conversation. After each stop, we rated the taco we tried on our ballot before heading to the next spot. CONTINUED >

Whether you consider yourself a taco connoisseur or you’re looking for a fun way to explore the metro, the tour offers far more than just a great meal. It’s a chance to discover places you may not have known about and experience more of the culture and flavors that make KCK known for its tacos. By the time the tour is over and you hand in your voting ballot, you’ll be full and have a few new favorite local spots to revisit. Fall in Kansas City T H E U LT I M AT E F A M I LY B U C K E T L I S T : AT H O M E & A R O U N D T O W N

There’s something about fall in Kansas City. With the changing leaves and cooler temperatures, this time of year brings endless opportunities to get out and explore. To share a few ideas for making the most of fall, we teamed up with local creator and mom, Faith Prindle. From backyard crafts to local orchards, pumpkin patches and trails, here are Faith’s top picks for family fun this fall!

At Home Fall Activities Fall Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt: Explore your neighborhood or backyard looking for colorful leaves, acorns, and pinecones. Use cardstock and glue to create a fun nature art project. Make a Fall Leaf Garland: Gather colorful leaves on a walk, then use clothespins and twine to string together a festive seasonal garland. Family Fall Bucket List: Sit down together and create a list of all the things that your family wants to do together before the fall season is over. Tape Spiderweb Game: Use painter’s tape to create a giant spiderweb on the floor. Kids can practice balance walking the lines or toss plastic spiders into the grid for points. No-Carve Pumpkin Decorating: Avoid the gooey mess and decorate pumpkins with paint, markers, stickers, and other craft supplies. Build Your Own Scarecrow: Use old clothes, wooden stakes and other supplies you already have at home to create your own family scarecrow for the yard or front porch.

S TA N D I N G FOR HOPE ARTICLE BY KATARINA BREWER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Real stories. Real survivors. A community standing together.

This month, as you drive home, head out for dinner or take a walk around town, you might notice purple silhouettes standing throughout Blue Springs. These wooden silhouettes are not just a seasonal display, they are a community-wide effort to bring domestic violence out of the shadows for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Blue Springs Police Department and Hope House of Kansas City have teamed up to spark crucial conversations. Together, they are launching a citywide awareness campaign centered around these silhouettes, to bring attention to domestic violence and encourage conversations. “Each silhouette represents stories of domestic violence victims,” explains Detective Jacoba Jacobsen. “Some honor those who lost their lives and those who survived. We want these figures to start conversations across Blue Springs, educate our community, and show victims that they are not alone.”

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

Students in the Wood Shop class at Blue Springs South High School cut out the silhouettes, which were then brought to life through the Chamber of Commerce Leadership class as part of a community effort to promote safe, healthy relationships. Domestic violence continues to impact individuals, families and communities. “This campaign is about bringing awareness to domestic violence because it happens in our own community every day,” explains Detective Jacobsen. “Our ultimate goal is prevention.” For Bri Otto and the team at Hope House, starting these discussions is a critical step. “Open conversations are the single best way for domestic violence prevention to happen. When we break the silence, we create a safer environment for everyone.” As you spot these silhouettes around Blue Springs this month, let them serve as a reminder to speak up and spread awareness. By having conversations and sharing stories, we can help create a community where survivors feel seen, heard and supported.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? Look for all 20 unique purple silhouettes placed across Blue Springs landmarks, parks, and city buildings. Here is how you can participate: • Walk or drive around town to find the silhouettes. Each one features unique artwork, educational facts, and stories honoring victims and survivors. • Scan the QR code on any silhouette for immediate support, safety resources, or information from Hope House. • Take a photo with any silhouette and upload your picture at voicesofhope2026.my.canva.site/voh2026 to enter a raffle for prizes donated by local Blue Springs businesses. • Personal donation of $25 or more made to Hope House during October automatically enters you into an additional prize drawing.

HOMETOWN SCOOPS Checking out local ice cream flavors

No matter the season, there is always a good reason to enjoy some ice cream. From an after school snack to a celebration, or just craving a sweet treat, ice cream has a way of bringing people together. I visited three ice cream shops serving up sweet treats and unique flavors.

Gooey Butter Cake Blue Cookie Jar

Birthday Cake

Caramel Brownie Sundae

GOOD DAY ICE CREAM

MAIN STREET ICE CREAM

What started as a lighthearted joke between friends quickly turned into a cherished neighborhood destination. When owners Loren and Jason Tyler and Samantha Lockwood opened Main Street Sweets in Grain Valley, they pictured a place that was more than just an ice cream shop. They wanted it to be welcoming, where families could gather, slow down, and make lasting memories together. The shop serves a variety of classic homemade ice creams locally crafted in Kansas City. There are a variety of flavors to choose from, including Blue Cookie Jar and Gooey Butter Cake, along with fresh fruity options like blackberry and wild strawberry.

Expanding into Blue Springs was an exciting step for co-owners Erin Caselman and Ryan Robinson. They set out to create a simple, nostalgic neighborhood spot centered around spreading everyday happiness. Whether it’s an after-school reward, a post-game celebration or an evening outing, Good Day Ice Cream was built for life’s simple moments. Beyond the ice cream, Erin and Ryan also focus on giving back. They partner with local schools, youth sports teams and community organizations to support the neighborhood that welcomed them. Not sure which flavor to try first? This Just Got Serious is a fan favorite, while Birthday Cake is another popular choice. And if you still can’t decide, feel free to sample a few flavors before making your choice.

For co-owners Jose and David Barrios, opening Main Street Ice Cream in Blue Springs was all about creating a welcoming space where neighbors feel like old friends. As a child, Jose remembers visiting a local ice cream stand after school. That memory stayed with him, inspiring the warm atmosphere he and David have created. To keep things personal, their ice cream is crafted in-house, giving them the freedom to create their own recipes and unique flavors. For first-timers, the Strawberry Cheesecake is a standout with real cake pieces folded throughout, while the Caramel Brownie pairs a classic vanilla base with rich caramel and bite-sized brownies.
