The Power of a Father’s Influence

Have you ever asked yourself, “Do fathers really matter? Am I making a difference at home?”

The simple answer: absolutely. A father’s role is powerful, and the impact you make is entirely up to you.

I’ve been blessed with a father I deeply respect. He’s wise, loving, faithful, genuine, and servant-hearted. The example he’s set continues to shape who I strive to be—as a husband, a future father, and a man of faith. Like so many great dads, his efforts often flew under the radar. Quietly consistent, he always did what was best for our family. For that, I’m forever grateful.

This Father’s Day, let’s reflect on how fathers shape their families in meaningful ways. A father’s strength, words of encouragement, loving presence, and guidance can create lasting memories and build a strong foundation for his children. Whether through quiet support or exciting adventures, fathers make a powerful difference.

If you’re a dad, know that you are irreplaceable to your family and your community. And if there’s a father or father figure in your life, let him know just how much he means.

FAMILY ABOVE ALL

Three generations, one mission—protecting homes and building lasting relationships

For three generations, the Swingle family has built a legacy in the roofing industry, starting with their grandfather’s roofing business and continuing today with Swingle Family Roofing. It’s a tradition grounded in craftsmanship, hard work, and genuine care for the people they serve. With deep roots in the community and a foundation of family values, this local, family-owned business was

founded with a clear mission: to bring homeowners a better roofing experience, rooted in quality, integrity, and personal service.

The story of Swingle Family Roofing began with a simple yet powerful idea. “My father, Mike Swingle, started Swingle Family Roofing to serve the greater Kansas City area with roofing services built on quality, integrity, and customer care,” shared Dominic.

Today, brothers Dominic and Sebastian are proudly carrying on their father’s legacy, treating every roof like it’s their own. Backed by more than 30 years of roofing expertise and 25 years of construction management, Swingle Family Roofing continues to grow, but their commitment to treating every customer like family remains unchanged.

THE VALUES THAT SHAPE EVERY ROOF

At Swingle Family Roofing, family isn’t just a value—it’s at the heart of every project. From the very first interaction, customers are met with a warm, friendly face and a team that genuinely wants to help. “One shoe doesn’t fit all in construction,” shared Dominic. “Every situation is different. We take pride in offering real solutions, face-to-face, with honesty and kindness.” That personalized approach is what sets them apart—open conversations, clear answers, and a commitment to making the process as stress-free as possible.

Their core values—quality, integrity, service, and family—are evident in everything they do. Quality means using durable, high-grade materials and trusted installation practices. Integrity is about transparency, accurate assessments, and

never upselling unnecessary services. Service is reflected in the care and communication provided every step of the way. And family? That means treating each customer with the same respect and compassion they’d offer their own.

A CUSTOMER-CENTERED EXPERIENCE

Their commitment to going the extra mile is more than a promise—it’s a practice that shows up time and again. No matter the situation, Swingle Family Roofing listens first—helping clients understand their options and guiding them toward the right roofing solutions with integrity and heart. “It’s important to us that our customers feel supported and protected,” shared Dominic. “We want to make sure they have one less thing to worry about.”

That same level of care extends to every job they take on. From the very first conversation to the final cleanup, the team keeps things simple, clear, and stress-free. Customers can trust that the same person they meet at the start will be the one overseeing the project through to the end. “We treat your home like it’s our own,” said Dominic. “We believe in honest communication, timely responses, and doing the job right the first time.” Their hands-on approach ensures no

detail is overlooked, and each step is documented so homeowners have full confidence in the work being done.

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

Looking ahead, the Swingle team has a clear vision for the future: to become a household name in Kansas City. “Our ultimate goal is that when people think of roofing in KC, they think of Swingle Family Roofing,” shared Dominic. But no matter how much the business grows, their focus will remain the same—delivering quality, integrity, and service, one roof at a time.

“We’re a company built on trust,” he added. “When you choose us, you’re not just getting a roof—you’re getting a team that stands behind its work. We’re always just one phone call away, ready to take the worry off your shoulders.”

That’s the Swingle Family Roofing difference— roofing with heart, backed by generations.

A Golfer’s Paradise

THREE DIY GOLF SIMULATOR SETUPS FOR ANY SPACE

As an avid golfer, I’ve long been intrigued by the idea of owning a golf simulator. The thought of playing 18 holes at St. Andrews or Pebble Beach—without ever leaving home—is pretty incredible. But there’s more to simulators than just fantasy courses. Whether you’re a data-driven player who loves analyzing swing stats or someone who enjoys friendly competition with outof-state friends, a simulator brings the game to life in a whole new way.

So, what’s the catch?

Well, until just a few years ago, owning a golf simulator felt nearly impossible for the average American. But today, thanks to the rise of more affordable launch monitors and DIY-friendly equipment, creating your own simulator setup at home is more accessible than ever.

In this editorial, I’ll walk you through three different DIY setups I’ve built or tested, ranging from a permanent basement install to a flexible outdoor patio build. No matter your space, budget, or climate, there’s a golf simulator solution that can work for you.

THE BASEMENT SETUP THE GARAGE BUILD

YEAR-ROUND GOLF STARTS HERE

If you’ve got a basement space that’s at least 14 feet wide by 18 feet deep with a 9-foot ceiling, you’ve got the perfect foundation for a home simulator. This setup is great for those who want a controlled environment, free from weather and distractions. For this build, we used the GoSports Sim Bay , a sturdy and budget-friendly enclosure that forms the heart of the setup. Add in a launch monitor like the Garmin R10 , a hitting mat—we chose the GoSports Elite 5x5 Hitting Mat—along with a projector, and a reliable computer or iPad, and you’re ready to go. Whether you want it to be a permanent fixture or something that can be stored away, there are options to fit your goals.

FLEXIBLE & FUNCTIONAL

Garages are one of the most popular spaces for golf simulators—and for good reason. You likely already have the space, the ceiling height, and the ability to open a door for ventilation. Plus, it’s a spot that often doesn’t interfere with daily family life. In this build, we prioritized flexibility by using the GoSports Range Cage. This enclosure has all the benefits of a traditional simulator bay with the added ability to easily store it a way when needed. For flooring, we used interlocking foam tiles under the turf to keep it comfortable and absorb impact. One important tip—be sure to check that your garage ceiling is tall enough to accommodate your full swing without risk.

THE OUTDOOR PATIO SETUP

OUTDOOR GOLF OASIS

If indoor space isn’t an option, don’t worry—your patio might be the perfect place to create your own golf oasis. This is actually the setup I chose for myself, and it’s been a game-changer. I love ending the day with a few swings while also enjoying some fresh air.

Durability and weather-resistance were top priorities for this build. We used all-weather turf, a GoSports Elite Hitting Net, and a Carl’s Place Hot Shot Hitting Mat. Since this is an outdoor setup, we chose a TV Shield Weather-Proof Enclosure to protect the TV. With a little planning, you can leave this setup out year-round and enjoy it even in the colder months.

Building a DIY golf simulator doesn’t have to break the bank. Whether you have a finished basement, a multi-purpose garage, or just some patio space, you can find a setup that fits your lifestyle and budget. The key is starting with a solid launch monitor and building around that. Not only has this project helped improve my game, but it’s also become a fun gathering spot for friends and family. If you’ve ever dreamed of playing Augusta from your own home, now might be the time to turn that dream into a reality.

Mission:

Giving back and changing lives locally

Community Impact

Shaun Ashley wears many hats—realtor, father, neighbor, and friend. As a real estate agent, he helps families find the right place to call home, but his work has always been rooted in something deeper. For Shaun, it’s about building lasting relationships and finding meaningful ways to serve others. One of those ways is through his ongoing support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a cause that has become close to his heart.

Since joining the RE/MAX Heritage team, Shaun has made the Children’s Miracle Network a central part of his mission. What started as a corporate partnership quickly became something more personal. Shaun felt an immediate connection to the work the Children’s Miracle Network does—providing life-saving care and critical resources to children and families during their most vulnerable moments.

“What inspired me wasn’t just the organization— it was learning how much of the impact happens right here in our community,” Shaun shared.

The University of Kansas Medical Center has served as the local Children’s Miracle Network hospital since 1985, supporting more than 50,000 children and families each year with medical treatments, educational programs, and life-changing equipment. But beyond that, they provide hope, show compassion, and offer critical resources when it’s needed most.

Through his ongoing efforts, Shaun has been recognized as a Platinum Miracle Agent for three consecutive years, and most recently was named the 2024 Children’s Miracle Network Miracle Agent of the Year. For him, this recognition is a reminder of what’s possible when people come together for something greater than themselves.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day work,” Shaun shared. “But being involved with Children’s Miracle Network keeps me grounded. It reminds me why I do what I do.”

Shaun’s involvement goes far beyond financial contributions. He helps raise awareness, participates in drives, and encourages others to give back in whatever way they can. “Even small efforts can make a big impact. Whether it’s volunteering at KU Medical Center or hosting a donation drive for toys, diapers, blankets, and other needed items. Every dollar, every act of kindness, it all adds up and leaves a lasting impact.”

Shaun embodies what it means to lead with heart, show up for others, and use his influence to lift people up. Whether he’s helping a client find a new home or supporting a child in need of care, Shaun Ashley is building something far greater than success, he’s building a legacy of kindness.

“YOU DON’T HAVE TO MAKE A MASSIVE DONATION TO CHANGE SOMEONE’S LIFE— YOU JUST HAVE TO SHOW UP AND CARE.”

Priceless Memories

Advice Editorial: Gift Giving Inspiration For Dads

Retro Movie Night

Enjoy a movie night together with popcorn, candy and all the fixings. Home movies enable strolls down memory lane, or one of his favorite movies from his childhood makes for fun conversation. Ordering a projector for a large format screening makes the movie night feel extra theatrical.

Learn Together

Learning a new skill together, or sharing a favorite hobby, is a great way to bond. If Dad likes woodworking or fishing, finding a class to attend together goes beyond gifting tools and allows fun.

Blast From The Past

Brainstorm childhood memories together and enjoy a day reliving them. If he chaperoned a trip to the zoo, experience it again together. If short on time, stop at a favorite ice cream stand and tell him how much you cherish the memories.

Father’s A LEGACY

Carrying the Rieger name into a new era

ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

ANDY RIEGER, PRESIDENT OF J.RIEGER & CO.  Andy grew up as the last male in the Rieger family line.  Throughout his childhood, he knew of the storied past his family had - the forgotten distillery known as J. Rieger & Co.  A storied past was all it had since the business shut down in 1919 at the onset of federal Prohibition.  Life came fast in 2010 while living in Dallas and working for an investment bank.  Andy got a call one day that his father, Tom, had terminal cancer.  Despite this, his dad encouraged Andy to carve out his unique career path and not return home to Kansas City because of his diagnosis.  Sadly, Andy’s father passed away just nine weeks after his diagnosis.  But before he died, he gave Andy lasting advice - only ever move home

if you have a reason, and only you will know what that reason is.  In addition, his father gave him instructions, “I won’t make it, but with the Rieger restaurant opening in the historic Rieger Hotel in the Crossroads, be sure you go say ‘hi’ to represent our family.”  Because of his instructions, Andy met bartender Ryan Maybee, and the discussion about reviving the historic brand was reborn.  Andy’s then-girlfriend, now wife, reminded Andy of his dad’s advice on moving home and helped him see that he was indeed being inspired to carry on the family business.  In 2014, they moved to Kansas City to begin the revival of one of Kansas City’s most storied businesses.  Today, Andy and his wife have two sons who will proudly carry on the family name.
