One of the things I love most about children and pets is their ability to find joy in the little things. When I was growing up, my parents would sometimes have big boxes around the house. My sister and I would use our markers to draw all over them and create our own little masterpiece. I’m sure my parents saw it as a box that was getting in the way, but to us, we were able to be creative, use glitter, and try out those cool airbrush markers. Pets are the same way. They get excited about the simplest things, like a walk around the neighborhood or hearing the rustle of a treat bag. These moments remind us to slow down and appreciate the things we often overlook.
As adults, it’s easy to get caught up in schedules, responsibilities, and the constant list of things that need to be done. But the little ones in our lives have a way of bringing us back to what matters most. They remind us to play, be present, and enjoy the everyday moments.
This is something I see in our own home with our two pups. They each have their own personalities, quirks, and ways of making us laugh. They have brought so much joy into our lives and remind us daily of the unconditional love and companionship pets provide.
This month, we’re celebrating the kids and pets who bring so much energy, laughter, and love into our homes and communities. We’re sharing stories about encouraging kids to try something new, creating memories with our pets, and the people who dedicate their time to caring for the ones who depend on us. Together, these stories highlight the joy, connection, and responsibility that come with caring for the little ones in our lives.
I hope these pages reminds you to slow down and enjoy the moments with the ones who make life sweeter. Because as we all know, they grow up faster than we expect, and those everyday memories often become the ones we treasure most.

HELPING FAMILIES PROTECT BELOVED PETS THROUGH LIFE’S UNEXPECTED MOMENTS
Misty Jo wasn’t just a beloved pet, she was family.
“She taught me about unconditional love, devotion, and the incredible bond we share with our pets.” says Tiffany Obermeyer. “She also inspired me to think about what might happen to a beloved pet if they suddenly lost the person they depend on most.”
That question stayed with Tiffany. While working alongside Attorney Tina Parsley Hughes at Lighthouse Legal, she realized one day that she was one of very few who pondered this question. When a client came in to start a pet trust, it was clear many families never considered what would happen to their pet(s) if they entered memory care, became ill, or passed away.
“This opened my eyes to situations where older adults experienced a health crisis or moved into care communities, leaving their pets without a clear plan,” Tiffany says. Dogs who had spent their lives providing comfort and companionship were suddenly frightened, displaced and facing an uncertain future.
Inspired by Misty Jo and the need they witnessed firsthand, Tiffany and Tina founded Misty Jo Dogwatch.
Built on compassion, dignity, and advocacy, the organization’s mission is to ensure no senior dog is forgotten during life’s transitions.
“Senior dogs have spent their lives caring for us; we owe them a future that is just as faithful as they have been.”
Since the founding of Misty Jo Dogwatch, they have helped 16 dogs receive the care and support they need through temporary assistance, long-term planning or placement in a new home.
“Here at Misty Jo Dogwatch, we provide a safety net for senior dogs. We assess each dog’s needs, coordinate care, connect families with resources, and advocate for the best possible outcome.”
When a family reaches out, the process begins with learning everything there is to know about the dog, including its personality, routines, medical needs, history, and even its favorite things. Then, the team develops a plan focused on stability, care, and the best possible placement or support system. “Our goal is to minimize stress and maximize comfort,” Tiffany shared.

While Misty Jo Dogwatch is here to help families during difficult transitions, Tiffany believes the best time to make a plan is before a crisis ever happens. She says a conversation, written instructions or a pet trust can make all the difference.
• Identify a trusted caregiver and have a conversation with them.
• Include your pets in your estate planning documents.
• Keep your pet’s medical records and routines organized.
• Consider establishing a pet trust or pet care provisions.
• Review your plan regularly.
These conversations aren’t always easy because they involve aging, illness, disability and mortality. But avoiding them doesn’t eliminate the need; it simply makes future decisions more difficult for both families and their pets. Without a plan, pets may end up in shelters, be shuffled between family members or experience prolonged periods of uncertainty.
“If you have aging family members, ask the questions now: ‘What would happen to their dog?’” Tiffany said. “It might just be one of the most loving conversations a family can have because best friends deserve a plan.”
For those who want to make a difference, Tiffany says every act of kindness matters. A donation can provide food, cover a veterinary bill or help transport a dog to safety.
“We’re creating a community where pets are protected, families have peace of mind, and every best friend has a plan.”

How IBEX Climbing Gym is building confidence and resilience one climb at a time
ARTICLE BY KATARINA BREWER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
For some kids, their curiosity for climbing begins on a tree in the backyard. For others, it’s conquering the monkey bars at the park or scrambling up the furniture they’re constantly being told not to climb on. What often starts as a fun challenge can become an opportunity to build confidence, resilience and problem-solving skills.
For over 30 years, IBEX Climbing Gym has given children a place to discover those same benefits in a safe, welcoming environment. What began with Chris and Stacy Fairbank’s love of climbing has grown into the Midwest’s first and largest climbing gym. Over the years, it has become an energetic community that’s introduced thousands of adults and kids to a sport that challenges both their bodies and minds.
Today, owner Todd Jordan and his son, Tony Jordan, who serves as General Manager, Head Coach and Youth Program Director, continue that mission. Together, they’ve expanded the gym with new climbing walls and interactive features while creating an environment where beginners and experienced climbers can challenge themselves and have fun.
While every climb looks different and presents its own set of challenges, the lesson is often the same. Success rarely comes on the first try. Instead, young climbers learn to slow down, adjust their movements and try different approaches when something doesn’t work. Falling isn’t viewed as failure, it’s part of figuring out the next move.
“Kids build problem-solving skills through trial and error,” Tony shared. “They learn that they have limits, but those limits aren’t permanent.”

For many kids, the process begins with hesitation. A route may feel too steep, too difficult or too unfamiliar. But, with encouragement and a willingness to keep trying, hesitation turns into progress. Moments of being resilient and persistent add up to something bigger. A climb that once felt out of reach is eventually conquered.
For instructors like Tony, watching that transformation is one of the most rewarding parts. “The best part is seeing the smiles,” Tony said. “They go from being scared, exhausted or frustrated to smiling and feeling proud because they conquered something they didn’t think they could do and trusted you to help them through it.”
From first time visitors to kids joining a homeschool program or club climbing, there’s an opportunity to learn at every level. “We want everyone to have a place where they feel welcome,” Tony says. “Whether it’s a father climbing with his kids, someone climbing for the first time or a child who’s been climbing for years, we want them to know they have a home here.”
While kids may arrive excited to race to the top of the wall, they often leave with something they didn’t expect: greater confidence, resilience and the belief that they can do hard things. Sometimes the greatest accomplishment isn’t reaching the top of the wall. It’s discovering you’re capable of climbing higher than you ever imagined.

“We want everyone to have a place where they feel welcome. Whether it’s a father climbing with his kids, someone climbing for the first time or a child who’s been climbing for years, we want them to know they have a home here.”
IBEX Climbing Gym offers opportunities for climbers of all ages and experience levels. Stop in for a day pass, sharpen your skills through classes or join one of the gym’s youth programs. IBEX also offers birthday party packages for a fun and adventurous way to celebrate.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

inside look at the new Blue Springs School District Career Innovation
ARTICLE BY KATARINA BREWER PHOTOGRAPHY
When you walk inside the brand-new Annette Seago Career Innovation Center (CIC), it becomes immediately clear that this is not your typical school setup. The facility is breathtaking, but it is the thoughtful design that truly captures your attention. With an open-concept layout and an abundance of flexible seating options, the space feels vibrant and full of possibilities. The space provides students with a comfortable environment where they can collaborate on projects, brainstorm creative ideas with classmates, or relax and connect with their peers.

Set to officially open its doors for the 2026–2027 school year, the CIC isn’t just a new building, it’s a whole new way of thinking about how local kids can prepare for the future.
“The new CIC building feels like a college campus,” Stephanie Lower, who teaches Business and Marketing classes as part of the Business Accelerator program, shared. “I love the collaboration spaces throughout the building. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing students spread out, make the space their own, and work together to create innovative solutions for our community partners.”
This new space was created with a clear mission: making sure local students develop success-ready skills, cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, and enter the workforce or higher education with confidence.
“Our programs are designed to provide authentic, hands-on learning experiences,” explains CIC Director Andy Mayfield. “This approach creates an engaging learning environment where students can ‘try out’ a career before graduation, helping them make informed decisions about their future education and career goals.”
The program is remarkably inclusive, welcoming juniors and seniors from five area public high schools: Blue Springs, Blue Springs South, Grain Valley, Fort Osage, and Oak Grove, as well as local homeschool and private school students. Currently, the CIC offers seven distinct career pathways from which students can choose: Aviation, Business, Culinary & Hospitality, Gaming & Technology, Medical & Health Sciences, Professional Studies & Career Foundations, and Teaching & Education.
What makes the CIC unique is that students don’t just learn about industries, they actively run them. In the Culinary pathway, students team up to operate Next Course Social, a restaurant open to the public, and run

the Little Blue Mug campus coffee shop. Aspiring pilots take the controls of a full-motion Redbird flight simulator, while Health and Education students complete direct hours during clinicals or in elementary classrooms. The digital labs follow the exact same hands-on approach.
“Our students work with the same tools professionals use, from Unity and Unreal Engine in Video Game Design, to Toon Boom Harmony,” explains Animation and Video Game Design teacher Andrew Enlow. “These students leave with a portfolio, not just a transcript. We’re building futures, not just teaching classes.”
That access to industry-level technology is what makes CIC students stand out. Shawn Clark, who teaches Business Accelerator, Robotics, and Introduction to Trades, believes these resources will turn the program into a regional powerhouse.
“The Career Innovation Center has become a central hub of this movement in the metro area,” Shawn says. “It provides students with real-world opportunities and community partnerships that enable them to become highly sought-after and employable individuals.”
Looking ahead, Andy envisions the CIC continuously evolving to match workforce trends, with a goal to serve over 1,000 students within the next three to five years. When asked what advice he would give to families considering a CIC pathway, he said, “Take the opportunity! We love seeing students discover and confirm their passions through participation in our programs. However, we also believe there is tremendous value in students learning that a particular career or industry may not be the right fit for them. Gaining that insight, while still in high school, can save time, money, and uncertainty later on.”
Whether a student leaves the CIC with a clear career roadmap or simply a better understanding of their unique strengths, they graduate one step closer to their dreams.

My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.
INGREDIENTS:
• 3 lbs ground turkey (85% lean)
• 1¼ cups frozen sweet potatoes
• 1½ cups frozen peas and carrots
• 1 cup frozen spinach
• 1½ cups uncooked brown or white rice
• 4 cups water
DIRECTIONS:
1. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker.
2. Break up the ground turkey and mix all the ingredients.
3. Cover and cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.
Note: My dog food was ready in 3½ hours on High. Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze for later use.
