Ali Kramer | ali.kramer@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Style is an extraordinary part of life — far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our existence, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read and even how we interact with the world around us. It’s the unique thread that creates the tapestry of who we are. What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that can bridge differences and spark shared understanding. Here in Birmingham, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs or simply drawing inspiration from our communities’ vibrant culture, there’s so much to ignite your creativity and lift your spirit. This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. The most beautiful style is one that reflects who you truly are — your passions, your story, your individuality. No one else in the world can replicate that. Whether you’re exploring new trends, blending classic elements or creating something entirely original, let this issue inspire you to embrace the power of self-expression.

Some of the best opportunities are waiting in the city — in neighborhoods with value, vision, and room to grow.
12–15%
Too often, people slow down once they cross 8 Mile and miss the real potential on the other side. But city investment can do more than grow capital. It can help restore homes, support local developers, and strengthen communities that have been overlooked for too long. InterCapital Funding works with eligible investors who have old 401(k) rollover funds, retirement capital, or private capital and want more control over where their money goes. Through a qualified self-directed IRA, investors may direct retirement funds into real estate-backed opportunities that create both financial purpose and neighborhood impact.

It’s the kind of exchange Ashley Harris gets more and more often these days — and always delivers on. A team of wives and girlfriends asking her to make a statement before a playoff game, a hometown actor from a trending TV series or a season-ticket holder who “just wants one jacket made for one specific seat in one specific section,” she says. And she treats every task the same way. The stitching doesn’t change because the deadline did. Every jacket, whether it’s one of 18 or the only one she’ll make that month, gets the same attention at the seam and the same care in how it’s made.
A season lasts a few months. A jacket, if she’s built it right, lasts a lifetime. It is why clients keep coming back, and why more people find her style one-of-a-kind. Harris’ love of sewing began in childhood, making outfits for her Barbie and American Girl dolls, with her great-grandmother’s guidance. She loved styling herself — flipping through catalogs and taking-fashion design classes before she even had a portfolio. She went from Western Michigan University to New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology, earning a degree in Fashion Design and Couture. She landed a coveted internship at the Vera Wang atelier in New York City.
Back in Michigan, Harris went to work in luxury retail management at Coach before transitioning to trim engineering in the auto industry, where she learned to think about constructing pieces the way an engineer does — not just how a design looks, but how it’s built to last. Between her 9-to-5, Harris worked on custom evening gowns and couture dresses, which kept her coming back to her “why?” “I love creating beautiful art,” she says. “Nothing compares to seeing people feel their best in something I’ve made.” She launched Ashley Harris Designs in 2012. With her growing success came a new arm of her interests: In addition to designing couture gowns, Harris watched a rise in upcycled fashion. “Clients would mail me clothing they already owned,” Harris says. “I’d combine it with other thrifted finds to create one-ofa-kind patchwork pieces.” In her hands, well-worn tees, denim jackets and even stadium memorabilia were given new life as hand-stitched one-of-a-kind pieces. Through this process, Harris found herself drawn to yet another niche: sportswear. She was pulled into a world of custom pieces built for the people who live and breathe a sports team. And not just the players on the field. She began creating for the wives and girlfriends of professional athletes, season-ticket holders — and anyone who wanted to wear their love of the game literally on their sleeve. “No two clients are the same,” Harris says, “and neither are their pieces.” The one-off pieces kept growing. Last year, Harris added a new collection under the Ashley Harris brand. Rooted in sustainability and innovation, Drafted in Detroit is the sportswear line built to take what she’d been doing one piece at a time and make it accessible to everyone. She had a clear idea of what she wanted it to stand for — a brand rooted in Detroit, built for anyone who loved a team that much.
The requests keep coming in — from fans currently rooting for the Detroit Tigers to those looking forward to football season, including high-profile names like Coaches Izzo and Fralick, National Anthem-singer Monica Notaro, influencer Kait Keith and NFL wives Callahan LaPorta and Carly Wright. Another highlight: designing a custom jacket for Michigan-native Antonio Cipriano that he wore to Obsessed Fest. “Clients want pieces built around a specific game, a specific moment — something that captures exactly what each season or event meant to them,” Harris says. “I work closely with every client, from start to finish. Meaningful pieces are at the core of each design.” Harris is preparing for what’s next: a launch already in motion, a spot lined up at See You Sunday sports-themed pop-up market and more fashion shows of her own with a team behind the brand. Every piece she makes is engineered to outlast the moment it’s made for.

When Courtney Shea and Katie Turner met through their kids at Saint Hugo, they never imagined a coffee date would turn into a business. Over the years, the Bloomfield Hills moms would see each other at pickup and school events, and both took notice of each other’s style. “Courtney and I would show up to things dressed similarly,” Katie says. “Even our husbands were like, ‘are you guys kidding me?’ But also, people in the community or at school were coming up to us separately and asking, ‘Oh my gosh, where did you get that?’ or ‘I love your outfit.’ About three years ago, the pair started going out to lunch together, and realized they had much more than clothing in common — in particular, they both loved being around people. Courtney mentioned a dream that she had of owning a boutique. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B I R M I N G HA M M I

“I was telling Katie about a conversation I had with my husband, Nick,” Courtney says. “I told him I felt like I wanted to do something new, and I said, ‘Should I dye my hair or open a store?’ But I knew I couldn’t do it alone.” Without missing a beat, Katie said, “I’ll do it with you.” Just 18 months after that conversation — this past November — the pair opened penelope mae (penelopemae.com). Yet another shared passion: They both wanted to name their daughters Penelope, but their husbands vetoed the name. Tucked into Birmingham’s Railroad District, penelope mae is the namesake of their dreams. Walking in, clients are enveloped in an uplifted sense of warmth — one can feel the beauty. “We want to provide elevated ready-to-wear clothes that a woman can wear to school pickup and look put together, but can wear the same outfit with her girlfriends or out to

dinner,” Katie says. “It’s about empowering women, but empowering ourselves, too.” penelope mae’s offerings reflect the founders’ shared eye for elevated, wearable style. Courtney describes her aesthetic as “elevated casual.” Katie, by contrast, calls her own style more classic, though she credits Courtney with teaching her to punch up a neutral outfit with a simple standout piece. Together, that balance shapes the shop’s curation: fine-quality clothing that’s an investment but meant to be worn for years, not tossed after a season. The shining star of the boutique, of course, is the designer roster. Alemais and Susie Kondi, both sold exclusively at penelope mae in Michigan, along with Kallmeyer, Rohe and Lisa Yang — a cashmere label whose soft-knit sweaters have become the store’s top seller. Many of these brands were
sourced through New York buying agencies before the shop even had a physical location, a leap of faith Courtney and Katie say they’re grateful the designers took on them. The pair say the community has welcomed them with open arms — which thrills them, as they aim to be community-focused. “We want to be a resource, especially for other local women and businesses,” Courtney says. “We’ve done quite a few trunk show pop-ups, we’ve hosted charity events and women have had Sip & Shop events with their friends, with wine and charcuterie. And we’ve talked about book clubs.” This fall and winter, shoppers can look forward to visits from Marfa Stance, a European suede and leather label bringing in jackets and skirts, and GP Embroidery, a Grosse Pointe–based artist offering on-site embroidery in December.
“Meeting everyone and learning people’s stories and bringing people together — that’s what we want this space to be about,” Courtney adds. “We want it to feel like a welcome community space for all of us women.” That beckoning welcome emanates from the store’s warm, layered interior, with the help of Anne Strickland, owner of Anne Strickland Interiors, who filled the space with her own furniture and artwork — all of it for sale, with pieces rotating in as others sell. “At the end of the day, we are moms, so we needed to make it work for us and work for others as well,” Courtney says. “Anne has young kids too, so she understood what we needed. She was so welcoming and really helped us bring the design we wanted to life.” Adds Katie, “We want the boutique to feel like an extension of your home or your closet. Welcoming and warm.”

THE DETAILS Courtney and Katie invited friends who’ve helped them during their journey of opening penelope mae. The pair asked each woman to wear their own jewelry and shoes and the business partners styled each woman around her own personality. Flowers were designed by Stems by Shanna Gorga and wine was provided by Eton Market. • Anne Strickland (Anne Strickland Interiors) wore a colorful Alemais dress ref lecting her everyday style. • Erica Dunlap (Aeres Real Estate co-founder) wore Apiece Apart in a chartreuse tone chosen to complement her coloring. • Angela Thomas (Aeres Real Estate co-founder) wore a Lisa Yang sweater paired with Alemais pants. • Courtney Shea wore Kallmeyer’s Felicity Cascade skirt with the label's Chassis polo. • Katie Turner wore Rohe, one of her personal favorite brands in the shop.

ARTICLE BY LYNNE KONSTANTIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALY DARIN
Tucked into Birmingham’s Triangle District, nové has become a destination for precision cutting, personalized color and modern hair. Founded by owner Cece Lawton and managing partner Kristyn Ren in 2023, the salon operates as a collective of 14 stylists united by a shared commitment to thoughtful craftsmanship and an understated luxury aesthetic. “I think people come to nové because it feels welcoming from the moment they walk in,“ Lawton says. “We wanted to create a bright, modern space where everyone feels comfortable, relaxed and genuinely taken care of.“ CONTINUED >

That approachability, paired with a focus on delivering trending, easy-towear personalized results, is what sets the salon apart: a focus on atmosphere and connection. Rather than leaning on a formal mission statement, the nové team lets that philosophy show up in the details — an unhurried consultation, a genuine conversation about lifestyle and hair goals, and a finished look that feels less like a trend and more like a client truly seen. It’s an approach that has helped the salon build a loyal following in a short amount of time, with clients returning not just for the technical skill, but for the experience itself. As a Davines Exclusive Salon, nové’s colorists work exclusively with the Italian haircare line, chosen for its performance, longevity and commitment to healthy hair. That partnership extends beyond the color bar, informing everything from in-salon treatments to the retail shelf, where clients can find the same professional-grade products used behind the chair. The salon’s Boutique rounds out the experience with a curated selection of seasonal fashion finds — jewelry, gifts and clothing sourced from a mix of local artisans and fashion labels. It’s a natural extension of the salon’s broader philosophy: a space where beauty and personal style are treated as one continuous idea, not separate errands. Guests often find themselves lingering after an appointment, browsing the boutique’s rotating edit of pieces before heading back out into the Triangle District.
AUTUMN REFINED | FALL 2026
For Fall 2026, the artists at nové created a collection inspired by rich tones, soft texture and understated sophistication — reflecting the season’s shift toward lived-in luxury. Fashion stylist Saxon Lawton paired each model’s look with pieces from the nové Boutique’s fall collection, polishing each artist’s vision from head to toe and reinforcing the salon’s belief that hair and style go hand in hand. Together,

Now in its 37th year, the annual Birmingham House Tour returns Sept. 17. Featuring six private homes in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills, each showcasing the work of local interior designers and architects, the tour reflects the unique, forward-thinking and historic character of our community’s neighborhoods. The fundraising event, hosted by Shared Tomorrows Community Foundation to benefit education, wellness and cultural causes in the surrounding communities, continues the good work of The Community House Association. On these pages, get a sneak peek inside four of this year’s stunning homes — before you see them in person. Tickets: communityhousehelps.org.
HAZELWOOD HOUSE BIRMINGHAM Photos by Martin Vecchio
When a couple with three young children found their Birmingham home, the location was perfect — close to the kids’ school, great neighborhood. The house itself was another story. Built in the mid-1900s, it had great bones, but the space was chopped up and tight, says interior designer Jane Spencer, owner of Jane Spencer Designs in Bloomfield Hills. “The floor plan was a really poor use of space, and it was super dark. The family wanted it to be light and bright.” Working with architect Glenda Meads, owner of Glenda Meads Architects in Birmingham — who Spencer credits with an exceptional job of reimagining the layout — the team gutted and remodeled the home top to bottom. “It was really important to [the wife] to be mindful of making the most of the home’s square footage,” Spencer says. “Her home office was very important. We wanted it as beautiful as it is functional, because it’s visible from the front door — when you enter, you’re staring straight at the desk.” Because there’s only one family room in the back of the home, the
office doubles as a secondary tv and study area for the kids. “We tried to make it a really beautiful multipurpose space so the kids could enjoy it as much as the wife does,” Spencer says. Spencer designed deep olive-green custom built-ins to conceal the printer, custom hanging files and other office necessities while layering textures — including a sofa, ottomans for extra lounging tucked under a straw-colored console table, wallpaper wrapping both the walls and ceiling and a showpiece Missoni rug. With antique mirrors reflecting prisms from behind the home’s bar area, its charcoal custom built-ins conceals storage and a fridge well-stocked with convenient grab-and-go snacks and drinks for the kids. “Everything now is in a completely different place than it was,” Spencer says. And the light pours in.

THE AFFLECK HOUSE BLOOMFIELD HILLS Photos by James Haefner
The Affleck House is a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece. Commissioned by Elizabeth B. and Gregor S. Affleck in 1940 — just before WWII halted residential construction — the house was built on an isolated, densely wooded site, with no ground level and traversed by a small stream leading to a pond. With its kitchen, living and dining rooms merging to form one unified space, a flat roof, horizontal lines and skylights that flood the interior with natural light through the large windows, the Affleck House not only furthers Wright’s philosophies of open

living, self-sufficiency and reverence for nature, it also exemplifies Wright’s Usonian philosophy: Developed as a solution to the “small-house problem, it was designed to be both affordable and deeply livable, a re-imagining of the American home from the ground up. In 194041, the home’s model was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; today, the house is listed on both the Michigan and National Registers of Historic Places, and was donated to Lawrence Technological University by the Afflecks’ heirs.

Perched on a hillside where Birmingham blends with Beverly Hills, architect Joseph Mosey, principal of Joseph Mosey Architecture in Northville, made the most of this new construction’s stunning site, while mindful of the area’s historic homes. With a river snaking through the property below and a lush tree canopy at eye level, the site itself became the blueprint. “We wanted to take advantage of those amazing views,” Mosey says. “It feels like you’re Up North, all secluded on a river, even though you’re on a cul-de-sac in Birmingham. It’s a cool spot.” In a direct response to the unique geometries of the site, Mosey turned the house on a 22.5-degree angle from the point of the great, office area and bedrooms above. “This way, you can see the river, where it actually takes a turn and moves away from the house down into the valley before it curves back around,” he says. Inside, interior designer Heather Duggan, owner of Heather Duggan Designs in Birmingham, leaned into that connection with the outdoors. “If you’re on the first floor, you’re looking out at the tree line,” she says. “It feels like you’re in a treehouse.” For that reason, Duggan says, the clients — a young family with three kids — wanted a neutral palette so that the landscape was not distracted by the interiors. “I layered lots of cozy fabrics and unique textures that were also practical, so
the whole family and guests feel like they can cozy up, read a book and look outside,” she says. Integrated into the interior are details, like the showstopping lighting fixtures from Palacek and Visual Comfort, acting like jewelry within the function. The result is a home that’s as practical as it is beautiful. With three kids and a busy family life, lots of entertaining and friends and family coming and going, livability was non-negotiable. “They live there,” Duggan says. “It needs to work.”

MARTELL HOUSE BLOOMFIELD HILLS Photo by Martin Vecchio When this 1938 colonial farmhouse was purchased by the current owner, the bones were beautiful — original stone exterior, one-time carriage house doors on the garage, a small service entrance in the back, a grand front foyer — but previous updates had pulled the interior in a more modern direction. “It’s a very charming home, with elements that still feel original,” says designer Lauren Tolles, founder of Maison Birmingham. “We wanted to update it to honor and reflect the original home.” With three kids in their teens and young 20s — and their friends — coming in and out of the house, the home had to be both beautiful and livable — and the heart of the home is the kitchen. Previously asymmetrical with lots of stainless steel, Tolles made better use of the space and warmed it up by paneling the appliances with cabinetry to look like wainscoting

and integrating antique brass mesh for texture. The result feels warmer, more personal — and more true to the farmhouse it has always been. The client’s closet was her gift to herself: “We wanted to create a space that was bright and feminine, that she would feel happy walking in every day,” Tolles says. Details, including the lighting, were planned specifically to highlight the homeowner’s bags, shoes and other accessories in a very personalized way. “The floral wallpaper, blush tones, illuminated display cabinetry, shagreen accents, mirrored doors and boutique-inspired lighting all support the feeling of stepping into a favorite luxury boutique every morning,” Tolles says. “The design solves the practical storage needs of a luxury wardrobe, while feeling glamorous, feminine and unapologetically joyful.”

A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 54
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y
A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything. CONTINUED >

Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together.
FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME. 56

FOX 2’s Ronia Shamona brings heart, curiosity — and style — to every story. ARTICLE BY SUSAN THWING
Some people report the news. Ronia Shamona creates conversations. As host, anchor and producer of FOX 2 Detroit Live, Shamona spends her days interviewing celebrities, entrepreneurs, community leaders and everyday people with extraordinary stories. She also brings viewers her popular segments Ronia’s Rundown — a collection of quirky, unexpected stories that spark conversation — and Rapid Fire with Ronia, where guests reveal their personalities through fast-paced, unscripted questions. But behind the polished television personality is someone who has spent her career embracing change, overcoming doubt and refusing to let others define what success should look like. “I hope viewers take away more than just information,” she says. “Whether it’s an inspiring person, a unique story or a simple moment of joy, I want my work to leave people feeling informed, uplifted and more connected to their community.“ A proud Detroit native and first-generation American, Shamona grew up speaking Chaldean, Assyrian and Arabic before learning English in elementary school. Because English was her second language, she was often told her accent would prevent her from succeeding in television. “People used to tell me broadcasting was nearly impossible for someone who sounded like me,“ she recalls. “Now I’m proud that I speak multiple languages. Your background is a strength, not a limitation.“ Her path to television wasn’t a straight line. She initially studied criminal justice before someone encouraged her
60
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE
to consider broadcast journalism, recognizing her natural ability to connect with people. That suggestion changed everything. After spending nearly two decades working on the West Coast, including stops in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Hollywood, she returned home to Metro Detroit, where she says the city’s transformation has been inspiring. “I always knew Detroit was home,“ she says. “Coming back has been incredibly rewarding. It’s exciting to be surrounded by people who are passionate about making our community even better.“ One of the greatest challenges of her career came after stepping away from television for six years to raise her two children. Returning to the industry meant relearning an entirely new world of broadcasting. “Technology had changed. The news had changed. The way people consumed information had changed,“ she says. “It was almost like starting over.“ That experience shaped the advice she now shares with other women, especially mothers. “I think mothers are already leaders,“ she says. “Never give up. Believe in yourself. Even if the road is long and filled with challenges, you'll look back grateful that you kept going.“ While storytelling is her profession, fashion is her creative outlet. “My style is almost like an alter ego,“ she says. “I dress for the mood I’m in, or the mood I want to create.“ One day she may pair jeans with a white T-shirt. The next, she’s adding a dramatic tie, a bold handbag or even rhinestone hair clips to transform a simple blouse into something uniquely her own. “For me, fashion is more than clothing; it’'s self-expression. Every outfit tells a different story.“ Like the stories she tells each afternoon, Shamona believes the best style, and the best conversations. are the ones that feel authentic.
WHAT’S IN RONIA’S BAG? Her Louis Vuitton OnTheGo East West lives up to its name. Between television shoots, interviews, community events and family life, Ronia Shamona’s handbag is always packed and ready for whatever the day brings. “I can carry it by the top handles for a polished look or attach the long leather strap and wear it over my shoulder or across my body when I need to keep my hands free,” she says. Bath & Body Works Lavender Vanilla Hand Sanitizer “I’m a bit of a germaphobe,” she admits. This calming sanitizer is one of the first things she reaches for throughout the day. Hair Tie With long days in the studio and on location, a backup hair tie is non-negotiable. “My hair has a mind of its own,” she says.. Five Gum Fresh breath is essential when you’re interviewing guests all day long. Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lip Cheat & Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink (Poet 60) Her beauty routine is simple but reliable. She skips lip gloss altogether, preferring long-lasting matte color that stays put on camera. AirTagged Keys “I have a talent for misplacing them,” she says. The AirTag has become a lifesaver. FOX 2 Badge Breaking news doesn’t wait. Her station badge ensures she's always ready to head straight to work if plans suddenly change. Pen Old-school but essential. Inspiration, and great story ideas, can strike anywhere. Alcohol Wipes Another everyday essential that reflects her practical side and preparedness. Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Perfume A travel-size bottle offers a quick refresh between interviews and appearances. Magnetic LED Phone Light Perfect for capturing high-quality photos or videos on the go when professional lighting isn't available. Wallet “It’s filled with gift cards I keep forgetting to use,” she says. “Hopefully they’re not expired!”
“E VE RY T H I N G I N M Y B A G H A S A P U R P O S E. S O M E TH I NGS H EL P M E STAY ORG AN I Z ED, S O M E H EL P M E FEEL M Y B EST, A N D S OM E R E M I N D M E OF W H AT M ATTER S M O ST.”

Elk Rapids has always had the raw materials of a great Northern Michigan getaway — a quiet marina, a stretch of luscious Grand Traverse Bay shoreline and a village pace that slows you down within minutes of arrival. Now, it has a hotel built to match that setting — one that achieves its mighty design ambition. The Dexter Hotel — a 29-room boutique property that just opened in May — is a work of art. CONTINUED >

Both warm and modern, the Dexter Hotel offers a luxurious take on Michigan’s rich legacy of design and manufacturing. Conceived by Kinship Hospitality’s Kamron Bijeh-Apple and Daniel Caudill — the founding creative director of Shinola, and the mind behind the Shinola Hotel — in partnership with Shore North Development, the Dexter offers eager hospitality in a polished destination. Caudill has built a celebration of Michigan craft and mid-century design heritage that is deeply connected to its surroundings. Nearly every piece in the hotel, from the bespoke white oak furniture to the ceramics on your nightstand, was designed in-house and fabricated by regional makers. Wolf Studio in Grand Rapids built the furniture and lighting. Traverse City ceramicist Clay Maas threw the lamps, bowls and soap dishes. A local seamstress sewed the drapery. Bear Sign Company handled the signage. Rather than hotel “boxes,” guest quarters are designed to feel like well-appointed apartments, some with kitchenettes — muted tones, woven textiles, gallery walls mixing original art with vintage pieces sourced from Northport’s Pernette’s. Modular stacked-box construction means no room shares a wall, ceiling or floor with another, so the quiet is real — savor tucking in to handcrafted Serta mattresses, down bedding and Frette linens. Billed as “Elk Rapids’ living room,“ Noble Lounge is a destination itself. Beverage Director Anthony DiMaria, formerly of Sugar House Detroit, has crafted a bar program of clarified juices, fat-washed spirits, house-made syrups. Try the Rapid Snapper, a feta-washed gin cocktail with olive brine and celery salt, or gather a few friends for the Mini Tiki Flight — three cocktails of your choosing, served together on an actual surf board. Executive Chef John Korycki, a three-decade veteran of Italian and Mediterranean kitchens, keeps the food list tight and shareable: Think Lemon Mascarpone Tortelli with rock shrimp, or Lobster Roll Sliders done Maine- or Connecticut-style so the table

doesn’t have to pick a side. Everything on tap and on the plate leans on regional partners — Arbor Brewing Company beer brewed specifically for the hotel, cheese from Suttons Bay and Northport, produce from area farms. The Dexter sits with direct patio access down to the public waterfront on Grand Traverse Bay, minutes from the Elk Rapids Marina and a short drive from Flintfields Horse Park, home of the Traverse City Horse Shows. Proximity to 40-plus wineries across the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas, Sleeping Bear Dunes and an airport (Cherry Capital, just 15 minutes away) in the middle of a $120 million expansion means Northern Michigan is becoming easier to reach — and even more worth reaching.

Vitamin A is essential to protecting the corneas of our eyes. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
As the season transitions into fall, it still features the warm, sunny days of summer but nights start to drop into the crisp temperatures. That leaves us in the limbo of wanting cool, refreshing drinks part of the time but also craving the deeper, spice-infused flavors of autumn. This recipe for apple cider sangria is the perfect blending of the seasons, leaving you feeling both refreshed and warmed through the deep flavors and interesting hints of spice. It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. Here’s what you need to make the perfect mid-season cocktail to enhance whatever event you have planned.

INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
• • • • • •
Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
