The trainers: Carly McPhail, personal trainer and group coach, Chelsea Baugher, owner and head trainer, Anna Newblatt, personal trainer and group coach.

WHO

Chelsea Baugher, left, owner of Detroit Sweat in Royal Oak (detroitsweat.fitness).

WHO ELSE

Baugher and her husband, Tim, live in Birmingham and are expecting their first child this month.

WHAT IT IS

“Detroit Sweat opened its doors in July 2021,” Baugher says. “I've always envisioned having my own gym/space someday but never thought it would turn into such an incredible journey as this.”

THE BACKSTORY

“After ending an eight-year sales career, I knew that my passion was in health and fitness. I became a certified personal trainer at the age of 28, and had to find a way to make it work, plus make money. I worked at a small gym 25 hours a week, while also working retail for Lululemon

for a few years until I began to expand my career by working in a corporate gym setting. After months of building a private clientele, the pandemic hit: I was furloughed, and all gyms were shut down. There was only one choice — pivot and regroup myself and clients. I created a studio in my basement for virtual training and called it Detroit Sweat, which included group classes, 1:1 private training and many outside park workouts. I was finally able to look for a brick-and-mortar space in the fall of 2020.”

THE VISION

“My goal was and remains to continue serving this community with efficient workouts, constant motivation and to hold individuals accountable to their health goals. Our brand of fitness includes workouts that focus on muscle endurance, strength training and metabolic conditioning. Being an athlete my entire life, I wanted to incorporate different ways to move the body in the most efficient and effective way.” CONTINUED >

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

“We are known for our effective and efficient training model, which includes three full-body workouts per week. Clients will always have an accountability trainer coaching them and will never feel left out. Our goal is to be there for you, encourage you and make sure you are living up to the goals you have set. You can count on us to give you direction, motivation and commitment every single session.”

THE DETAILS

“We offer a semi-private membership and personal training memberships. With four certified trainers on staff, including myself, our semi-private members have access and flexibility to attend three sessions/ week. On average, there are 24 semi-private sessions on the schedule each week, which are a max capacity of six people per session, with one trainer. Personal training consists of a more customizable approach to the individual, and these sessions are planned out with a trainer. Our space and equipment reflects functional training. We have 2,000 square feet of training space that includes dumbbells, kettlebells, slam balls, resistance training tools, rowers, skiers, bikes, sleds and three barbell racks.”

THE PHILOSOPHY

“Our training programs deliver an all-around approach to a sustainable body, with rest and recovery between sessions to ensure our members are coming back to their next session ready to go.”

WHAT SHE LOVES ABOUT WHAT SHE DOES

“There is nothing more fulfilling than helping people move better, feel better, reach their goals, increase their confidence and function better in their everyday lives.”

THE GRATITUDE

“I’m proud of the Detroit Sweat community we have built inside these four walls and beyond. We have such a special and unique group of members who want to better themselves. The Detroit Sweat name speaks for itself, and I’m so grateful for the support that has been poured out over the past two years.”

“

“If you have a smile that you’re embar ra ssed about , aesthet ic or cosmet ic dent ist r y is a way to get your smile back .” — Dr. Craig Goldin

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of teeth and gums. But for Dr. Craig Goldin, a dentist with the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute in Troy, cosmetic dentistry is more than just face value. He and his wife, Dr. Marcy Goldin, founded the practice in 1985 shortly after graduating dental school at the University of Michigan. They shared a passion for aesthetic dentistry and helping people feel better on the inside as well as looking better on the outside. “Unfortunately, our world often judges people based on how they look, and how they present to the world, and so if you have a smile that you’re embarrassed about, sometimes people will hold back.” he says. “They’ve lost confidence, they’ve lost feeling good about themselves, and so aesthetic or cosmetic dentistry is a way to get somebody’s smile back and get back their self-esteem.” Goldin’s patients come to him for a variety of dental needs, including broken teeth, missing teeth, discoloration, malformations and gaps, as well as full-service general dentistry. He says his most popular service is providing veneers, which cover teeth with a thin layer of porcelain to close gaps, straighten crooked teeth and repair chips and cracks. They can also fix discoloration, and since porcelain is less porous than teeth, they help prevent future staining. “[If] you’re already getting things fixed, why not make it look fabulous at the same time increase your self-esteem?” he says. Goldin says cosmetic dentistry can also be less about looks and more about practicality and comfort. Clear aligner therapy, like Invisalign, is an alternative to traditional orthodontics which use braces to straighten

crooked teeth. In addition to being practically invisible, Invisalign trays are more comfortable than braces, he says, and, since they are removable, make teeth-cleaning easier. For those who are missing teeth, Goldin’s practice offers full-mouth dental implants, an alternative to dentures, which make eating and talking more comfortable and don’t need to be removed. “We give patients the ability to have a third set of teeth,” he says. “They have a beautiful, healthy smile and eat things that perhaps they haven’t been able to eat in years.” Designersmile.com.

SUGARING HAIR REMOVAL

Dating back to ancient Egypt, sugaring hair removal is a process akin to waxing, but is a significantly less painful, more effective process, according to Solange Ferreira, who owns Sugaring NYC in Birmingham. Like waxing, sugaring spreads an adhesive substance onto the skin which is subsequently pulled off, taking the hair with it. The paste is an all-natural mix of sugar, water and lemon juice with a honey-like consistency that Ferreira says is safe enough to eat. Unlike with wax, however, the hair is removed in the direction of the hair growth, which she says is less painful, especially to those with sensitive skin, and less likely to cause ingrown hairs. The paste is also self-hardening and does not require an additional strip of paper on top of it to remove, making it less wasteful. The results are expected to last between four and six weeks. Sugaring can be applied to any part of the body, including legs, arms, underarms and the face, or chests and backs (popular with

men). But Ferreira says their most popular request is for bikini lines, especially their full Brazilian. Many clients also opt for a subsequent “V-Facial” with options for a soothing mask, ingrown hair extractions, a chemical peel or a high-frequency machine that treats a variety of skin conditions. The bubble-gum pink facility is part of the nationwide Sugaring NYC franchise, one of five in Michigan. The Birmingham location opened in December of 2022, and Ferreira says business has grown steadily every month. In addition to sugaring, she offers eyelash lifts, brow lamination and eyebrow or eyelash tinting. Ferreira also has a dentistry background, which she practiced in her native Brazil and in Germany. But when moving to the U.S.,she found that practicing here required significantly more education, so she sought an alternative career — and was drawn to the beauty industry. Ferreira says her work is about making people feel better about themselves, as she did in her dental practice. “If the clients feel better and [their self-esteem] is good,” she says, “that makes me happy.”

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a holistic form of ancient medicine that can treat a range of ailments, from pain to anxiety, by applying a series of light needles to

different parts of the body, depending on what is being treated. It’s based on the ancient Chinese concept of “chi,” a vital life force that runs in channels throughout the body and manifests at different points, says Renü Acupuncture founder Valentina Anikeyeva. “We place the acupuncture needles into those points to stimulate the energy and release any blockage,” she says. “[The chi] has to flow smoothly through your body.” While Westerners may be skeptical about the process, Anikeyeva says modern research has discovered the process works by stimulating the nervous system. Not a spa treatment; rather, acupuncture is a part of healthcare that is also offered in hospitals and with physical therapy. Anikeyeva says her patients come to her to treat a variety of physical and mental ailments, including pain, infertility, stress, insomnia and PTSD. “[Eastern medicine] sees your own body and your own immune system as powerful tools,” she says. “If you can stimulate in the right way, you can give it a boost and you can heal yourself.” Anikeyeva discovered acupuncture after experiencing the benefits firsthand. The Belarus native had completed three years of medical school before moving to the U.S., where it was too costly to continue her studies. Still wanting a career in medicine, she sought an alternative profession that would still be beneficial to patients. CONTINUED >

Anikeyeva was first exposed to acupuncture while pregnant and experiencing headaches and lower-back problems. Her uncle, a world-champion professional wrestler, had studied the practice in China, and suggested that she give it a try. “[Having attended] medical school, I was skeptical, and I was pregnant,” she says. “But he said, ‘Just trust me, it’s going to work.’ And it did.” Anikeyeva enrolled in graduate school at New Center for Wholistic Health Education and Research (now called the New York College of Health Professions)

in New York City, where she began her practice. She and her family moved to Michigan after the pandemic and Anikeyeva opened her Renu Acupuncture in Birmingham in January 2023; following its success, she added a second location in Oak Park in September. “Acupuncture can be a safer alternative to modern pain medication,” Anikeyeva says, as it can cause liver damage and become addictive. “Those who are curious should try it out,” she says. “There are no side effects and you have nothing to lose.”

Dr. Brian Fiani 32

G E T ACT IV E | WE LLN E SS

Neurosurgeon Brian Fiani offers tips on staying strong through the winter.

Healthy Moves for Seniors As we age, the likelihood of sustaining injuries from falls increases dramatically. However, seniors are staying active longer — which is a great thing, but it’s important to perform activities safely. “During winter, especially, people should be aware that slips and falls can jolt the pelvis and cause sacroiliitis,” says Brian Fiani, DO, FACOS and board-certified in neurosurgery with Ivy League fellowship training in spinal surgery. “But, don’t let winter keep you from moving. We want people to stay active all year round.” Being too sedentary can decrease spinal health by weakening bones, he explains. “The more that you do really helps strengthen the spine, decrease inflammation of the body and stay healthy and functional.” Fiani recommends getting out and enjoying the fresh air while walking on well-manicured sidewalks, but if there’s a lot of snow and ice on the ground, walk in malls and other indoor spaces instead. When outside, walk with others so if you do fall, there’s someone there to help you. “If you lose your balance and fall on your butt, it can cause compression of your bones, or you can have fractures of the lumbar spine or even worse, up in the neck that might need surgical intervention,” he says. Hitting your head can also result in a brain injury. If you can’t avoid walking on ice, he says, “Have a slow, wide-based walking pattern.” And wear appropriate footwear. Weight-lifting and other load-bearing activities can make bones stronger and healthier. “Seniors should do whatever exercises they can handle to keep their bones healthy,” Fiani says.

In addition to falls, many spine issues arise from sitting too long, or conversely, working very hard with your hands and being on your feet for hours at a time. If you find yourself sitting too much, get up and walk around regularly. If you have to stand a lot, take breaks to sit and rest your body. Fiani, who offers surgical and non-surgical interventions, was attracted to the medical field because he wanted to help others. “The opportunity to help people was the most important factor in making me want to pursue not just the field of medicine, but particularly neurosurgery,” he says. “Neurosurgery allows me to make the biggest impact on other people’s lives, because there is nothing more special than the brain, and the spine is what’s important for one’s functionality on a day-to-day basis. It really allows me to help others to not only live their lives, but to live them happily.” Fiani joined Mendelsohn Kornblum Orthopedic & Spine Specialists (MendelsonOrtho.com) in Troy in 2023. “I was really astounded by its capability of providing patients with a comprehensive spine center, with all of the specialists one would need for spine health and wellness,” he says. “That includes everything from a neurosurgeon like me to orthopedic spine surgeons and pain-management providers for non-operative modalities, including physical therapy.” As a student at Detroit Country Day School in Bloomfield Hills and Beverly Hills, Fiani learned the motto men sana in corpore sano, “which means ‘a strong mind in a strong body,’” he says. “It’s important for people’s minds, bodies and souls to stay active, especially during the wintertime. People should not hibernate.”

OH, GROW UP! Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors And Will Be One Of Greatest Allies To Aid Health

Humans always have had a penchant for propagation. Since King Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century B.C., artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls." Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall." Designers dubbed them “statement walls." But for purposes here, let's refer to them as the architects do -- as “vertical gardens.” A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade. The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well. Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality

by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress. Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well. As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast-growing, and are low maintenance. Add a little color to a wall with a lipstick plant, another climber named for its bright lipstick-shaped blooms. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden. CONTINUED >
