November 2023 PUBLISHER
Ali Kramer | ali.kramer@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Lynne Konstantin | lynne.konstantin@citylifestyle.com
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. Blessings to you and your family,

Gather
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

ad i t i o n al Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.

The tradition of setting a Thanksgiving table with fine English transferware depicting the holiday bird or other pastoral scenes is almost as old as Abraham Lincoln's proclamation of an official Thanksgiving Day — established in 1863. In the aesthetic tradition of these transfer-printed pieces, Juliska's Country Estate Serving Platter recalls the charm of English country life in a decal hand-painted by designer Deborah Sears and applied to hardy stoneware. HELPING HANDS ARTICLE BY LYNNE KONSTANTIN
ATTORNEYS DERRICK AND MAGGIE GEORGE SPEAK FOR THE ‘WHOLE’ PERSON.
Maggie George has a passion for defending people’s reputations and livelihoods, a common thread throughout her diverse career. Having worked for Congress on Capitol Hill as a director of training for a Fortune 500 company — and now, as a partner at George Law, a criminal defense and trial litigation firm in Royal Oak with her husband, Derrick George — it’s been a clear path. After many years of working in other professions, it wasn’t until she met Derrick, already an attorney at that time, that Maggie realized practicing law would help her to winnow in on helping people be seen beyond whatever obstacle they might be facing. Married and with a toddler while helping Derrick build George Law, Maggie earned a law degree from Wayne State University Law School, with a focus on criminal law, defamation and contracts. “I think I bring a level of analysis and inquisition that isn’t typical and it helps me formulate arguments that are hard to rebut and questions that my opposition can’t answer,” Maggie says. Derrick, too, came to law armed with manifold degrees and experience — after earning a master of science degree in real estate development from Columbia University, he managed large investment funds in New York City and managed programming for

Maggie and Derrick George
ABC World News Tonight and other news shows before earning his juris doctor from Denver University’s Sturm College of Law. Keeping a hand in business interests and a passion for entrepreneurship, he realized that his unique perspective was a needed attribute when negotiating for clients to be represented as a whole person, not just a defendant. Similarly, Maggie, a criminal defense attorney specializing in DUI/OWI, juvenile defense and felony charges, has a simple approach to the practice of law: to make sure the good in each client comes through in any legal battle they face. Together, the pair have guided George Law as a small firm with six attorneys to practice with a common philosophy: to give clients a fair chance as a “whole” person while navigating the complex legal system. “We focus on all kinds of civil and criminal cases,” Maggie says. “Our criminal defense work ranges from misdemeanor substance-use crimes to white-collar felonies. No community is immune from these issues. “People who find themselves charged with an alcohol-related driving offense or a drug crime are not ‘criminals’ in our eyes,” she says. “This could be a oneoff, out-of-character, bad night that someone had. Or we could be dealing with a repeat offender who truly has a dependency issue and doesn’t know how to help him/herself. The people who seek us out for help are
running this community. They are doctors, teachers, delivery drivers. We need all of them, day in and out, and our goal is to keep them with us as part of the community as we navigate through their cases, be it civil or criminal.” While accountability is imperative, of course, the couple believes that it’s equally important to remember that human beings are complex individuals who make mistakes, fall on hard times and sometimes struggle with mental health or addiction. And those people deserve to have their story heard, too. “I think Derrick brings an absolute fearlessness to this profession,” Maggie says. “Sometimes litigation is a game of chicken and Derrick will be the last man standing, every time.” In return, she says, “Clients have credited us for their sobriety or addiction recovery. We often won’t take certain cases unless clients get help for themselves to heal from a trauma, or break free from substance dependency — and oftentimes those two go hand-in-hand. But,” she adds, “we have been told that we have saved people’s careers, their lives, their children. One of our client’s even asked us to be his son’s godparents,” a request they turned down for ethical reasons. In addition to scaling their practice to other states, Maggie says, “Our goals remain to never stop learning in this profession — and to continue to truly help people.”

GIVING THANKS BY GI V I NG BACK Three locals are working hard to make our community better.
Nick Gorga
HATCHING A COMMUNITY By Jennifer Lovy
A large part of Nick Gorga’s narrative is the quintessential story of an idea-turned-grassroots initiative that led to a multitude of impactful opportunities for entrepreneurs in Detroit. In 2010, this 46-year-old Bloomfield Village attorney started Hatch Detroit, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting independent small businesses through funding, education, exposure and mentorship. Gorga conceived the idea of Hatch while he and his wife Shanna, both Detroit-area natives, lived in Chicago and were preparing to return to Michigan to be closer to family. One of Gorga’s priorities upon returning home would be to find a way to help Detroit and its residents move forward on the heels of the Great Recession. Reflecting on his time in the Windy City, Gorga says the couple appreciated how the neighborhoods coalesced around the retail in the area. “The shops, bars and restaurants all reflected the character of the neighborhood, and people tended to move to certain areas because they liked that vibe and the sense of community reflected in the retail offerings,” Gorga explains. When he thought about what brick-and-mortar retailers would need to start and maintain a successful business in Detroit, it was clear that capital and attention were the two most important factors, and Hatch would provide both.

Winners of the Hatch Detroit contest
Each year, hundreds of applicants submit a proposal for funding. Hatch requires that the businesses be permanent physical places — no food trucks or online businesses; think retail, bars, restaurants, gyms, yoga studios, art galleries, etc. A committee narrows the pool of applicants to 10. From there, four finalists are chosen through community-wide voting. A panel of judges, combined with additional community voting, decides which business will win a $100,000 cash prize from Comerica Bank, plus $100,000 or more in in-kind services such as legal and accounting. Although only one business gets the grand prize, the nine other finalists benefit from the competition’s publicity and future guidance from the organization. Since the contest began, more than 50 Hatch alumni businesses have opened a storefront, crediting the competition as a significant accelerator in their launch. Some standout winners include Baobab Fare, a nationally recognized restaurant, and Sister Pie, a James Beard Award finalist for best bakery. Gorga points to Baobab Fare as an example of why he started Hatch. “For us to be able to play a small part in a truly remarkable story of perseverance, hard work and dedication, to achieve a dream of opening a restaurant for two immigrants: that’s why we do what
we do, to try and play a small part in making peoples’ entrepreneurial dreams come true,” he says. To expand the impact of Hatch Detroit last year, the organization partnered with TechTown Detroit, a nonprofit dedicated to helping tech startups and small businesses develop, launch, and grow. Now called Hatch Detroit by TechTown, Gorga says one of the many benefits of this partnership is the additional support provided to help foster the success of the Hatch finalists through a more extensive network of resources. When Gorga’s not dedicating time to the nonprofit world or practicing law (he’s the vice chairman of the litigation department and a member of the board of directors at Honigman), he plays “a lot of golf.” He’s a member of Oakland Hills Country Club and Birmingham Country Club. He enjoys staying active by working out at Equinox, running, practicing yoga and playing paddle tennis. He also plays guitar and likes to travel with his wife and their two teenagers. “I’ve always felt pretty blessed in my life. And I think that when you’re in that position, there’s a responsibility to give back, to help where your talents are best suited,” Gorga says. “I’ve always felt a privilege and an obligation to do that.” CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . DBG GOES NATIONAL By Robin Schwartz
Birmingham native Jessica Hauser walked into a personal training appointment at the Downtown Boxing Gym (DBG) in Detroit in 2010. Little did she know that day would change her life. She describes what she saw as “magic” — a youth program founded in 2007 by Khali Sweeney that provides transformational mentorship, individualized academic support for each student and a whole host of other services from transportation to meals and more, all free of charge. After her visit, Hauser left the University of Michigan where she was pursuing a Ph.D. and became DBG’s executive director. The rest is history. “I instantly felt something,” she recalls. “I saw kids helping each other with homework and interacting with adults in a real way. I had to get involved.” Much has changed since DBG’s early days. From a scrappy nonprofit, Hauser and Sweeney have built a team of approximately 50 full and part-time employees with plans to expand DBG’s Detroit campus, double the number

of students they serve locally, and license the DBG model to reach students globally. “We feel it is absolutely our responsibility to do our part — to provide resources and opportunities to as many students as possible,” she says. With a focus on results, the free out-of-school-time program has carefully measured program effectiveness for more than a decade and is so impactful, two national organizations are recognizing DBG. TheNational Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $2 million grant to Purdue University’sCollege of Education and the Downtown Boxing Gym for a five-year research study to further evaluate, measure and magnify the far-reaching impact of DBG’s innovative STEM-based programming (science, technology, engineering, art and math.) The Library of Congress, the world’s largest library, also recently selected DBG for The American Prize, a literacy award that goes to one organization based in the United States annually for “making a significant and measurable contribution to increasing literacy levels in the U.S.” In the last three years alone, DBG has provided nearly 628,000 minutes of literacy tutoring. Students participating in one-on-one tutoring through a partnership with Center for Success and DBG’s other literacy programs gain an average of 5.5 reading levels per year. The program has had a 100-percent high school graduation rate among all participating students for the last 16 years. DBG is actively seeking partners to support its continued growth. Dani and her dad, Joel Pearlman
A SIMPLE TOOL TO CHANGE LIVES
The Pearlman family: Joel, Debbie, Dani, daughter Alex and son, Charlie
By Robin Schwartz
Danielle, better known as Dani, was born in June of 2000. By the time she was just 18 months old, Debbie and Joel Pearlman’s first child, their beautiful baby girl, was diagnosed with autism. Life as they imagined it would never be the same. “There is no doubt taking care of a child with special needs comes with its challenges,” says Joel, who lives with Debbie, Dani and two younger children in Huntington Woods. “But it has also been a gift. Dani has taught us patience and appreciation of the simple things in life. And she has made us a stronger couple and family.” Dani is nonverbal, but she understands and communicates in her own way. As she got older, her parents, longtime participants and supporters of Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield, realized they didn’t have a documented plan that others could use if anything happened to them. “The thought of us not having all the details of Dani’s life laid out in a way others can understand is disturbing,” Joel says. “How would they remember to give Dani her medications? How would they know her favorite foods? Make sure she has her headphones so loud sounds don’t hurt her ears? The list of details is long.”
The family started to document a plan in a simple word document. They describe the process as “tedious and unstructured” without a way to share the documents securely. So, Joel began to map out a tool for any family to use. And the Dani Plan was born. It’s a subscription-based website (daniplan.com; a free 21-day trial is offered and subscriptions start at $9.95/month) to help guide families through the process of building a plan for day-to-day living in one secure and shareable place for future guardians, teachers, caregivers, family members and others. Plans include information about housing, communication, medicine and therapy, daily routines and schedules, behaviors, education, food and diet, safety, financial information, legal information and more. “Ultimately, I believe having a Dani Plan is an invaluable way of making sure your loved ones and the people taking care of them have all the information they need for a happy and easy transition,” Joel says. “It’s the least we can do to make sure they maintain the respect and dignity they deserve.” To learn more, visit daniplan.com.

Fabulous Fetes LET ZANA DESIGN YOUR GORGEOUS, DE LECTABLE HOLIDAY PART Y.
ARTICLE BY LYNNE KONSTANTIN With November comes the beginning of the party season — Thanksgiving and Christmas, office gatherings, nights out for cocktails, entertaining visiting family and friends. You want to impress, but you don’t want to work too hard. Easy solution: Zana. The Birmingham restaurant, which celebrated its one-year anniversary last month, is part of the Michigan-based Tallulah Group, which owns and operates Tallulah Wine Bar & Bistro in Birmingham and BESA in Detroit.

Born out of a love for wine, food and friends when Mario Camaj bought it in 2013, Tallulah has grown into one of Birmingham’s favorite gathering spots. Conceived as a new modern American restaurant with a Mediterranean and European flair, Zana’s mission, says Martina Camaj, “remains the same — our guests before ourselves, exceptional service and a menu with the best-sourced ingredients.” Led by Chef Benjamin Zemach, its menu offers something for everyone, including tableside theatrics of Zana’s 48-ounce Hanging Tomahawk Ribeye or dry-aged Steak Tartare under smoke. Handcrafted pastas change with the seasons. And the restaurant’s cocktail program ranges from classics to the popular Oh That Becky. Equally praised for its stunning award-winning design, Zana was transformed by interior designer Sabrina Buchanan of BASE Designs, Ian Hartwell of Oliver Max Inc. and architect John Gardner of Gardner + Associates. The 10,000-square-foot space includes barrel-vaulted ceilings, the refurbished gold-leaf illuminated bar and mosaic tile and custom glasswork underfoot. Hand-blown glass lighting from the CONTINUED >

Czech Republic and commissioned artwork is scattered throughout. Both spacious and intimate, Zana has diverse party-hosting options. In addition to holiday gatherings, it can also host weddings, showers, professional conferences and more. The banquet room was designed to expand and partition to suit almost any need — from parties of 10 guests to 130 seated guests to a full restaurant takeover for up to 300 strolling guests. Menus, decor and florals can be customized with the help of Zana’s private dining team to create an unforgettable soiree. Visit zanabham.com.

a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL
40
C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and
I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious. “
What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”
How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around 20 bucks, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.” James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season
The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort
Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside. 3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup. 4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined. 5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy. 6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended. 7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal. 8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.
