The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, or the holiday activities. This month, we're highlighting the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We've compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier, and that also supports local businesses. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy and love. Happy holidays!

KATHY SULLIVAN LEADS SIDECAR BARTENDING AND PONY BAR WHEREVER THE PARTY IS.

ARTICLE BY LYNNE KONSTANTIN

In the age of specialty cocktails, I realized an experienced bartender could bring the fun bar and cocktail experience into their homes.

After 25 years in the restaurant and service industry, Kathy Sullivan quenches a thirst in Metro Detroit as the founder of Birmingham-based Sidecar Bartending, a mobile boutique bartending service.

BIRMINGHAM CITY LIFESTYLE: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED BARTENDING? KATHY SULLIVAN: I started as a bartender and short-order cook at Berkley's American Legion. Before opening Sidecar, I was the daytime bartender at Market North End in Birmingham when they opened about 10 years ago. I had many bartending jobs in between these two, but these stand out: The American Legion got me started in the industry and helped me pay my way through college. My job at Market North End allowed me to get back into the workplace after a few years away as I raised my four kids when they were little.

BCL: TELL US ABOUT THE LAUNCH OF SIDECAR BARTENDING KS: I knew that I eventually wanted to be my own boss, and the service industry and bar business is what I knew best and loved, so it just made sense to find a niche here. While I was behind the bar, customers always asked me to bartend at their private parties, and I realized the demand for this business. People wanted more than just a person pouring wine and beer. In the age of specialty cocktails, an experienced bartender could bring the fun bar and cocktail experience into their homes. I found that there was no local competition specializing in bartending services, so I drew up a plan. I invested in basic bar equipment (coolers, bar tools, simple tables that could serve as bars), bought insurance, and was off and running with graduation

parties in the summer of 2015. Soon I was hiring and training more bartending help, building a website (sidecarbartending.com), investing in more upscale equipment, and marketing my business to a wider audience — weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, holiday parties, corporate parties — even children’s parties. A couple of years later, I invested in a horse trailer, sandblasted and painted it and turned it into a mobile bar called Sidecar Ponybar. It was the first mobile bar in the state of Michigan, although now there are many. It truly makes me happy that I created something that led to a trend in the industry. I felt that the competition was actually good for business, as it made more people aware of the concept of private bartending to enhance parties and events.

BCL: HOW DOES THE BUSINESS WORK? KS: We are a high-end licensed and insured beverage catering business. We provide everything needed for a full-service bar (except the alcohol), including professional bartenders, bar options, mixers, freshsqueezed juices, garnishes, glassware, and ice. We have worked events from 10 to 1,500 people. We also offer bar-related products online, which are hot ticket items around the holiday.

BCL: HOW HAS THE BUSINESS GROWN SINCE ITS LAUNCH? KS: We have recently added a bike bar (Sidecar Bike Bar), motorcycle bar (Sidecar Motor Bar), Champagne bar (Sidecar Bubbly Bar) and many stylish standalone bars. And we are growing our product offerings that launched during the pandemic when events weren't happening. We offer mixers and other cocktail-related products directly to our clients and online. favorite cocktails are the Porch Paloma (tequila, grapefruit juice and Paloma Rim Spice mix) and Bourbon Smash (with apple cider, simple syrup, ginger beer and bourbon). For the holidays, we sell our Sidecar Bar in a Jar infusions, which make great hostess and client gifts — everyone gets a kick out of infusing their own booze (we specialize in corporate holiday events, which are fun for the entire team). On this season’s menu are our Espresso Martini, garnished with coffee beans; the Paloma, garnished with a bourbon-infused cherry; the Chocolate Manhattan; and the Ginger Hot Toddy.

CHRISTMAS STAR MARGARITA Kathy Sullivan opened her secret recipe vault to share a favorite holiday offering so you can wow guests at home. Before starting, infuse 1 bottle of tequila with five cinnamon sticks and five-star anise for 24 hours. • • • • •

1 ounce infused tequila 1 ounce Grand Marnier 1 ounce cranberry juice 1 ounce lime juice 1 egg white (room temperature)

Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 1 minute, until the ice has dissolved. Double strain into a cocktail glass. Wait for the egg foam to settle and garnish with star anise.

A United Front Steve Annear running the Detroit Free Press Marathon

Steve Annear overcomes his own obstacles so he can help others.

ARTICLE BY KARIN EISENBERG

24

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

It became a friendship bonded forever over mutual respect when Birmingham resident Steve Annear met former Detroit Tiger Kirk Gibson while golfing at Lincoln Hills Golf Course one early Sunday morning years ago. Annear recalls that he and his golf group watched Gibson running up the last hole, bag on shoulder, as he was about to tee off. Annear’s group all recognized Gibson immediately as he walked by, and they said hello. Annear, however, went home and Googled him, as the Australian transplant did not know who Gibson was. He quickly learned not only of his athletic feats but what an inspiring person Gibson is and how much he means to the people of Metro Detroit. He also discovered that Gibby had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Creating the Kirk Gibson Foundation in 1996 to provide college scholarships to high-school students, Gibson expanded its mission to raise awareness and funding for Parkinson’s Disease after his diagnosis, in 2015, becoming renamed the Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson’s (kirkgibsonfoundation.org). Annear was drawn to Gibson, and the two wound up becoming golfing buddies and a strong bond developed almost instantly. Annear was moved by Gibson’s battle with the disease and impressed by his incredibly positive attitude in the face of it and his determination to channel his energy and celebrity toward his namesake organization. Ultimately, Annear’s respect for Gibson evolved into taking positions with the foundation as managing director and board member last year. But the friendship digs deeper. Born and raised in the Australian Outback, Annear had his leg

amputated due to vascular issues at the age of eleven. Overcoming many obstacles related to his amputation, Annear represented Australia as a coxswain. Professionally, the CEO of several businesses moved his family from Melbourne to Michigan in 2014 for one of those businesses. When the Birmingham-based Annear met Gibson, he was inspired by the kindred spirit of a person rising above obstacles to live a life based on what he can do for others. To that end, Annear raised close to $100,000 for Gibson’s foundation — by completing the 26.2-mile Detroit Free Press Marathon on Oct. 16, on crutches. Running alongside the foundation’s Team 23, Annear says, “I have been privileged to join the team at the Foundation to help drive Kirk’s vision to provide hope, help and inspiration to those with Parkinson’s Disease. “I did this because I love a challenge but, much more importantly, to raise money for the foundation,” he says. “Over the past two years, my friendship with Kirk has awakened me to the massive challenges that this disease presents to those who have Parkinson’s Disease, to their families and to their carers. Gibby’s own fight has personally inspired me to get involved and help out.” He came in at less than nine hours. “If you can help even one person in any capacity, it is worth it,” Annear says. While we may see Annear as an inspiration, he sees himself as a man determined by his own values and sense of what he can accomplish. He may acknowledge that he has one leg, but he doesn’t allow it to define him — instead using it as an opportunity to shine the spotlight on others in need.

’TIS THE SEASON TO DO FOR OTHERS.

The Giving Spirit Who doesn’t love to tear into a beautifully wrapped present? We do! But the holiday season is also about gratitude and giving — which can be easy to forget amid the festive hoopla. To make the giving easier for you, we rounded up some of our favorite local in-need organizations. THE BOTTOMLESS TOY CHEST brings toys, joy and hope to pediatric cancer patients in Metro Detroit. This non-profit organization, based in Troy, is devoted to delivering empowering toys, craft projects and interactive activities to hospitalized children undergoing cancer treatment. Get involved by hosting a fundraiser, sponsoring a toy drive or donating specific items on their Wish List. Bottomlesstoychest.org. MAKE FOOD NOT WASTE Each week, this nonprofit organization takes in 1,000 pounds of surplus food from farms, grocers and restaurants. With the food that would otherwise end up in the landfill, the org creates delicious meals that they distribute for free to the community — to date, they have given out more than 85,000 free meals. To learn how to upcycle your food and learn about giving, visit makefoodnotwaste.com. DOG AIDE’s goal is to keep dogs at home with their loving owners and out of the shelters. They assist dog owners who are struggling to care for their dogs due to financial hardship. Dog Aide provides families with dog food, supplies, daily care items and access to medical care. Last year alone, Dog Aide

provided more than 150,000 meals to dogs across the community. Dogaide.com. NF FORWARD DETROIT Neurofibromatosis, also known as NF, is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerve pathways anywhere in the body, affecting one in every 3,000 people throughout the world. NF Forward Detroit aims to eradicate NF by funding cutting-edge NF research and raising awareness about NF and invites support for this innovative vision. NFForwarddetroit.org. HUMBLE DESIGN is helping the homeless, one design at a time. The org changes lives by designing and furnishing the homes of families and veterans who are emerging from homelessness in Michigan. Their home makeovers make a house a home and encourage long-term stability in hopes of ending the revolving door of homelessness. Since 2009, Humble Design has furnished over 2,500 homes. Humbledesign.org. OAKLAND COUNTY FOSTER CLOSET provides clothing, toys and shoes to children in the local foster-care system. Children are often placed in foster care with no personal items, and in many cases, come into care with only the clothes on their backs. This non-profit organization helps reduce the financial strain a new placement can put on a foster family and provides personal items that these children can call their own. Their 100-percent volunteer-fueled organization helps hundreds of foster and at-risk families every year. OCfostercloset.org.

THE LOST ART OF T H A N K YO U NOTES ARTICLE AUBREY SEWELL

IN A DIGITAL WORLD OF EMAILS AND TEXTS, THE SIMPLISTIC, AND ONCE STANDARD “THANK YOU” CARD HAS FADED. Does that mean we are no longer appreciative and grateful for the nice gestures that are extended to us? Absolutely not! We are just caught up in those casual platforms of communication, that we don’t take the time to sit down and give the time and attention to craft our heartfelt thanks in a way that shows purposeful thought. The written word is proof on a page and this is valuable for so many reasons. Gratitude spurns happiness, but thankfulness is tricky; the only way it is known is if it is verbally acknowledged. Writing it down is evidence of that feeling. Putting words on a page is also more intentional than shooting off a text or email. Communicating your thanks in the common, oversimplified fashion isn’t necessarily bad, but setting aside time be “old-fashioned” with pen and paper, demonstrates the value you place on what has been done for you. Plus, handwriting is an extension of who you are as a person. It breathes your life onto the page. It exudes your voice, your spirit and your message in a way that is uniquely yours. With the holidays just around the corner, there is quite a fine line

HELPFUL “THANK YOU” TIPS Send a thank you within a week of receiving someone’s gesture Use “snail mail” Be specific: mention the particular item or action you are grateful for Be genuine Personalize it: colored writing utensils, hand-lettering, or cards made from family photos Think outside the box. If writing REALLY isn't your thing, send a video of you verbally thanking them.

between the gratefulness of Thanksgiving and the endless spending of money on the endless lists for Christmas for people who anxiously have the “gimmes.” It’s important to navigate those waters, to cultivate a giving spirit as well as an appreciative heart, and establish an attitude of thankfulness. Receiving such a novelty through the mail is both meaningful and memorable and sending a special gift like this is a blessing to both the recipient and the sender.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
