This March issue marks my one year anniversary as editor of Billings City Lifestyle so I felt it was appropriate to share a little story about what "home" means to me. But before I do, I wanted to first thank you, dear Billings, for eagerly accepting my desire to spotlight your businesses or personal triumphs. It has been so entertaining and endearing getting to know some of you and I look forward to another year of doing so. Stories are the glue that make a community stick together and look out for one another, and it sure feels good to be part of that in some small way, so thanks for having me. And now, time for that story: I remember what everyone said when I announced that I'd be a homeowner: "Welcome to the neverending to-do list!" They were so right.

I'm in my eighth year of homeownership and it's laughable how many times my husband and I have done something, and then re-done it a year or two later. There is no "measure twice, cut once" for most home projects.

Eventually, things or circumstances change and the list grows.

We didn't grow up with livestock in the backyard so we had some trial-and-error type years where we'd watch how fencing or food storage or feeders got destroyed and then we'd rebuild. Then, once we finally felt like we had a handle on things, we got creative in other ways that made a shelter or paddock look more aesthetically pleasing or more convenient. Around this time every year there's a notepad with random big projects listed on it: fix fencing, build lambing shed, finish underground irrigation.

It feels like a roller coaster that you'll never get off of, in the best way possible. Those first few years felt so overwhelming but they forced me to really focus on things that were important to me: my childhood horse, photographs, a gorgeous log dresser gifted to us by our realtor (our first nice piece of furniture), a bookshelf that I picked up at a local antique shop. A home is built around these things.

I hope this issue inspires you to fix something that's been bothering you or just appreciate all the work you've steadily invested over the years. Our homes, no matter where they are or what they look like, are our sanctuaries. Let's make them feel that way.

Home is a treasure trove. Think of every place you've traveled to and every meaningful item you've brought back, like a bird with a twig to its nest. When I first moved into my home I was 23 years old, almost entirely house broke, and my tiny sense of interior design was in fact limited to just one room, like the apartments or dorm rooms I'd had in the past. Taking on a whole house felt daunting and expensive. Although, if you know where to start, the rest kind of falls into place.

It all fit into a two-horse trailer and the back of my pickup truck. Everything. My clothes, a few pieces of furniture, several boxes of books. Oh, and the horse, too! But the books were a staple that I did't expect. After leaving a plum job in publishing to follow my horse enthusiast lifestyle, I had a collection of books that were too dear to leave behind in some storage facility.

When I visited a local antique store I found the perfect bookshelf, complete with wallpaper on the back wall that had been painted over. I don't recall how much it was but it sure was

inexpensive so I loaded it up and hauled it home and stacked those books along its shelves. Inside each cover, a hand written note or signature from authors I'd met or sent a copy to be signed. Each one housed a memory. Each one was a relationship with my past.

When I worked at a dude ranch one summer, a few ranch hands were branding their hats before calling it a day. I took mine off, revealing a sweaty head, hair all matted down from a long, hot day, and asked if I could get a brand, too. That same hat, which I no longer wear, hangs above my bed alongside another. The perfect decoration to a modern yet western styled bedroom. On the walls are black and white photos from a cowboy adventure in the Grand Tetons, my son's baptism, an old drawing my mom purchased that has a sweet poem about rocking chairs and growing old scribbled on the side. More memories, more family.

What first-time homebuyers (especially young ones) don't realize is, character takes time. A house starts off as a house,

yes, but it eventually turns into a home. I find that it helps to be minimal and meaningful, meaning that saving and displaying everything might lead to a cluttered and chaotic appearance, but picking and carefully choosing what items walk through life with us makes those chosen items all the more special.

If you've just moved here and you're struggling to find the right style for your home, or you've been here all your life and you can't seem to relate to anything within your walls, I recommend taking a trip down memory lane, or visit a local shop like Made For Home. Dig up those old photo albums and pluck one or two from the crispy plastic pages. Dust off those baby shoes and buy a shadow box so a childhood photo can keep them company in a safe but stellar space. Or find something new with a friend or relative. There are so many ways to pull richness into our daily lives by harvesting what we already have. If it has a story, let's share it.

GETTING COZY AND CREATING A FEELING

Living as we do in a region with incomparable recreation, our focus is often outward: what peak to climb, which trail to ski, what river to fish. The lure is always there, and if we’re lucky there is a familiar kitchen and hearth to return to when our mission is accomplished.

Home is the place where comfort lives, and comfort is there because this is where we collect love and memory.

To say that a home is a shelter does not begin to capture it. As children, we built forts and treehouses, which helped us encircle a piece of territory, like lords and ladies with our own demesne. Home, though, isn’t a palisade of hefty sticks or a cobble of found lumber. Humans started seeking shelter about 800,000 years ago, and since then, the notion has come to mean many things. We all want to come in from the cold and to experience the sensations of being within, to be warm rather than chilled by the wider world.

The hearth is the oldest and most powerful symbol of safety, sustenance, and comfort. Old fireplaces were massive, with an iron bar known as a chimney crane for holding cooking pots. The fireside was a focal point for family life in cold weather climates.

This is where reading, story-telling, sewing, and food preparation happened. What do all these activities have in common? They are creative undertakings.

Creativity is why everything good seems to flame up from that central place, and why our associations of safety and coziness are both simple and powerful. The activities of running a home take place in the in-between moments. Big events are important, surely, as are time-honored rituals of birth, marriage, and bereavement.

Yet it is the quiet daytime and evening work we do that forms the spun yarn of connection and meaning.

The Danes and the Norwegians have a lovely word that captures the spirit of a warm and healthy home, and that word is hygge (pronounced hyoo-guh). It focuses on comfort, simplicity, and even soul, with of course a lot of creativity stirred into the mix. I learned this word twenty years ago on a trip to Norway. It was once—at least in American culture—a pretty rarefied term, but it has risen on the tide of popular consciousness and there are now numerous books on the subject.

If anything, hygge is diverse. At the same time it is never self-conscious or staged. The notion of hygge treads a path close to that of belief and spirituality. After all, what is more

sacred than one’s home and creating a setting that feels personal and enriching? A few mementos, special books, a good broom, an organized kitchen…abundance and richness mean different things to each of us. I had an aunt who used to unfurl brilliant lengths of Marimekko (fabric from Finland) from her second floor bannister.

This was one of her many touches of hygge.

There is irony in the fact that hygge, something most of us crave and long for, is most likely to flourish when we are not consciously striving for it. Minding the house and garden is often the simplest path. It is in losing ourselves in the daily essentials that we allow creativity to come, and that means peace and comfort.

A Home for the Hopeful BEARTOOTH HUMANE ALLIANCE HAS THE ULTIMATE HOME AT THE HEART OF ITS MISSION Home usually has a few dog hairs blowing around, or stuck to our upholstery or clothes. Anyone who has a dog knows that March often offers muddy paw prints in the foyer, and we don’t mind. Our cats are cuddled up in the warm, fresh laundry and we are too distracted by their peacefulness to notice that they’ve made more work for us. Of course, for animal lovers, home isn’t really home without a pet.

The team behind Beartooth Humane Alliance feels pretty similarly. Animal welfare has been their focus since 2006 and their efforts and impact have only grown, making Billings a place to call home for lots and lots of lives. They are different from a typical animal rescue organization in the way that they don’t have a building that houses animals without a home. They have grown to a point where a network of foster families now exists to care for pets in transition.

Starting off as the only animal welfare organization in Carbon and Stillwater counties, the Beartooth Animal Alliance initially set out to spay/ neuter and offer humane education in addition to helping animals find homes. Their efforts date back

before a formal group was realized when the first ever spay and neuter clinic called Operation Nip & Tuck was offered to the community thanks to the help of generous donors and more than 100 volunteers. Now, instead of a clinic, they offer appointments. Since its inception, more than 5,000 dogs and cats have been spayed or neutered.

And while that’s a huge feat to celebrate, there are still animals that need homes, which is why you’re seeing these furry and charming faces.

Miko is a sweet, all-black cat with a gentle personality. He’s content to spend his time on your lap purring loudly while the world goes by. There’s nothing that phases this little guy!

Miko is litterbox trained and his adoption fee includes all vaccinations, microchipping, and neuter when he’s old enough. We don’t know if Miko has been around other cats or dogs but he’s so laidback that we’re sure he’ll do just fine in most any situation.

Mav is a good-natured kitten who loves to be held. He’s playful and likes toys, too, but he mostly just wants to be with his people. Mav is litterbox trained and his adoption fee includes all vaccinations, microchipping, and neuter when he’s old enough. We don’t know if Mav has been around other cats or dogs, but he’s so easygoing that we’re sure he’ll adapt to any situation in no time. He and Miko are the best of friends!

Drew is a sweet boy who wasn’t expecting to make a transition into a new home. His caretaker recently passed away and Drew is looking for a second chance. Drew is a Staffordshire terrier mix, about 9 years old, weighing about 50 pounds. He loves people and loves attention.

Drew is neutered and house-trained (uses a doggie door). He lost an eye earlier in life, but it hasn’t slowed him down! He will roam and get into trouble when off-leash, so a fenced yard is a must. He hasn’t been around many children, and dislikes cats. Drew is a lover through and through.

Ever ything you need to know to create a breathtaking in-home bar

Having a home bar is cool. It is, however, not cool if the only thing you can offer guests is a couple of dusty bottles of liquor that have been there for years. What you have in your home bar can make or break your gathering, however informal it may be.

A well-rounded bar should include at least one bottle of each of the six base liquors, which are the foundation for the majority of cocktails. Stocking a nice selection of these will ensure you can mix up almost any cocktail on a whim.

If you feel like a whiskey cocktail tonight, you’ll be ready. When a guest asks for a brandy, gin, rum or tequila-based libation, you’ll be prepared to grab your shaker and mix up a drink.

VODK A Vodka has a clean, transparent flavor and is used for more cocktails than any other distilled spirit. Stock at least one “fifth” bottle of vodka, but opt for a handle (1.75 liters) if you like to entertain.

• A good solid option like Titos is ideal for tall drinks like the screwdriver and bloody mary.

• If you enjoy a vodka martini, spend a little extra for a top-shelf bottle as well.

• Consider stocking a couple of flavored vodkas. In a traditional bar, citrus and vanilla vodkas are the trusted standbys. suggested glassware:

RUM

A well-stocked bar has at least two bottles of rum.

• A light rum will be your workhorse for most cocktails, from the tropical daiquiri to the timeless mojito.

• As a secondary rum, take your pick of aged, dark or spiced rum. suggested glassware:

Gin can be quite floral and botanical depending on the brand, since it is made from very botanicalforward juniper berries.

• If you aren’t an aficionado, a good bottle of a London dry gin is recommended. This is the most versatile and can work in everything from a gin and tonic to a dry martini.

• From there, you can get adventurous - every brand is different and a wide array of flavors is available. suggested glassware:

TEQUIL A Tequila’s quality can vary drastically, so make sure to test them out before purchasing. It’s the key to the ever-loved margarita, though there are other fascinating tequila cocktails to explore as well. Generally, you’ll want to stock at least one nice tequila.

• The most versatile style is blanco (or silver) tequila, and it’s the best option for a one-tequila bar.

• For a little upgrade, add a slightly aged reposado as well. suggested glassware:

This is where things get complicated. Each whiskey has its own style and characteristics. In general, two bottles are a good start - but you can always add more.

• For the most versatility, stock a bourbon and Canadian whisky. The bourbon will give you that robust whiskey flavor and the Canadian blends tend to be very smooth.

• Rye whiskey is a great choice for everyday mixed drinks. Though some drinkers find it too spicy, rye is excellent in almost any cocktail that calls for a generic whiskey. If you enjoy classic cocktails, give rye a try for an authentic taste.

• A bottle of Irish whiskey and a decent blended scotch are good complements to any bar. While they make excellent cocktails, they’re not as common or as versatile as the other styles. suggested glassware:

Liqueurs are often used as flavoring agents that define a cocktail. On occasion, they are the only distilled spirits in a drink. Liqueurs come in every flavor you could want and a bottle can last quite a long time. Start with the basics and gradually add to your stock as you see fit. The majority of these are likely already in your kitchen and easily found at almost any store. Many mixers will keep in your bar for a long period of time. Check their freshness periodically and pay attention to expiration dates.

ESSENTI A L J UICES AND MIXERS Juice is easy: pick up a bottle or two during your next trip to the store. Of course, it’s best to use fresh juice whenever possible. However, for everyday drinking, those bottles of ready-to-pour juices are very convenient. Lemon and lime are good ones to have on hand, while orange and cranberry and grapefruit juice will be less-frequent depending on your taste.

in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh.

We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America.

Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST!

Brooke’s Pro Tip:

From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
