With the spring season in full swing and Mother’s Day upon us, the team here at Billings City Lifestyle would like to gift you with these rich stories about influential, confident, and beautiful women. We hope they represent or remind you of the women in your own life—friends who have always had your back, mothers who tucked you in all those childhood years, small business owners who gift wrapped something special so you didn't have to, or your neighbor, the one who made sure to stop by your child's lemonade stand. These women make the wheels of our community keep turning and they don't always receive the standing ovation that they ought to be given. Ladies, this month (and always) we tip our hats to you! The female influences in my life have, in some way, shaped every facet of who I am as a person. My mom instilled a sense of perseverance in me that pushes me through the toughest of times. Her ability to take a difficult situation and turn it into a positive thing is a lesson I hope to instill in my son and generations to come. My fiance, Amanda, wakes up every morning and absolutely knocks it out of the park with our kid. As exhausted as she sometimes is, she still sports a smile on her face. And she somehow puts up with me, too! We all have special women in our lives who deserve recognition for the special things they do. I challenge everyone who reads this letter from me to contact the extraordinary ladies in your life. A friendly call or text just to say, “Thanks for being there.” You won’t regret it.

Taking Her Shot

Jen Pinkerton finds her passion photographing couples

ARTICLE BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MT CHIC PHOTOGRAPHY & JEN PINKERTON PHOTOGRAPHY

B ACK STAGE | PR OFESSI ONAL S E RVI CE S

Marriage is a commitment, but so is hiring a wedding photographer. All too often we don’t have to dig too deep to find a great, juicy story from a couple who wishes they’d spent more money on a photographer, or in the least, made that part of the planning a bigger priority. Jen Pinkerton of Hysham knows all about a good photography investment, or lack thereof. “I was absolutely heartbroken for my sister and my parents at my sister’s wedding,” says Jen. “My mom took out her little point-and-shoot camera and the photographer yelled at her and wouldn’t let her take a single picture of my sister.” Recalling how upsetting that instance was and coupling it with her own inexpensive wedding photographer feels like a double wedding whammy. But it wasn’t until Jen became a mother that the thought of picking up a camera more often, and maybe professionally, started to feel like a real possibility. “I actually graduated with a Civil Engineering degree from North Dakota State University and pursued a career in Geotechnical Engineering until I realized that it was not my dream, not my passion,” says Jen. With the help of New York Institute of Photography, she developed a new career path and passion. “My favorite photography is couples photography,” says Jen. “Give me all the weddings and all the engagements!” With wedding season upon us, Jen offers a healthy array of photography services stemming from one common core: love. Boudoir is another fine art that she offers, showcasing a woman in her confidence, beauty, and intimacy. When Jen gets the chance to bejewel herself and step in front of the camera, it’s hard to remember that she grew up in a little farming community in southeast South Dakota, where ironically, her home here in the Billings area reminds her so much of. She’s a Montana girl through and through, in her heart of hearts, and so much of that country

lifestyle gave her the vigor and determination that life—and photography—often requires. “Living rurally gives me room and allows me to breathe, rejuvenate, and dream up new shooting ideas all the time,” says Jen. “I honestly believe living in a rural location is a strength and quality. It makes me a better person, not being lost in the busyness of a city, and always giving me a peaceful, calm demeanor—a way that I always wish to interact and bless my clients with.” In addition to these wide open spaces that Jen has always known, horses and faith are two unwavering constants. “Our horses taught us about life, responsibility, and appreciation. It was a great way to grow up and we enjoyed the valuable family time spent traveling and competing. My horses took me all the way through college, even competing at the College National Finals Rodeo in goat tying.” Her current horse, Finch, is a reliable source of laughter, inspiration, and calm. And when it comes to faith, Jen has no doubts as to who is at the helm of her life’s course. “I believe love starts with God and ends with God, just as in the circle of life, there is a circle of marriage. I feel God placed me in this role as a couple’s photographer to carry his will, celebrate people, and love endlessly,” says Jen. “Showing that through my images and giving that feeling of grace to others. God, life, and union are gifts and I am thankful for every day!” Jen’s infectious energy is a compliment to any wedding. She is quick to capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments, slowing them down, moment by moment, to last and to be cherished for decades—and generations—to come. Eau de Lilas

ARTICLE BY SARIE MACKAY

A MEMORY OF LILACS

16

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L IFE + CULTURE

The Rocky Mountain Front is peppered with abandoned cabins and homesteads. We see them as we whiz by on the interstate or as we bump along the washboard byways. Each one tells a story. Who stood in that kitchen and looked out that window, the one with the frame that has gone from solid square to leaning parallelogram? Who put that piece of tin flashing around the chimney? Did a new bride coax her man into doing it? Perhaps he was gone the entire rainy month of May, taking cattle to the high country. When the sun finally came out, she decided to clamber up there herself. In our mind's eye, we see her there, blue dress whipping around her in the stiff breeze. She's wearing one of his wool shirts as well, and is perched against the chimney, hammer in hand, intent on her task. When it's done, she will be amazed at herself but when he comes home she will putter around the stove, her eyes averted, and will tell him about it in an offhand way, as if it were the same as throwing cracked corn to the chickens. The stories are legion, the images infinite. What often strikes us about these cabins is their loneliness. The oldest ones show no sign of a garden; the earth and the prairie grasses have taken everything back. There may be an outbuilding but more often there isn't,

nor is there evidence of a corral. It either became firewood or just fell down and is composting its way back to dirt. But there is often—so often it quite startles the observer—a certain shrub or bush close to the doorway. Sometimes a few paces away, but always near the house. The common lilac. Common to the American landscape but uncommon in every other sense of the word. Back to our chimney-fixing bride. Her baby sleeps in a well-padded laundry basket at the base of the ladder. When she has tapped in the last nail and used one of her kitchen knives to baste the metal patch with tar, she comes down. She pushes back her blown-about hair and sizes up her morning: bathe baby, search for eggs, chop kindling, do the wash. But then she stops. The lilac. Its heart-shaped leaves have been in place for a month but only last week did the tight magenta buds appear. Today the sun has made them open and their fragrance makes her hand fly to her chest and stay there. Gone are the tedium and the solitude. The scent of those lavender clusters takes her back to the Ohio River Valley, to the white house where she was born. She inhales deeply and kisses the blooms, then twists a couple of florets loose and rubs them against the skin of her neck.

WOMAN ON A

ARICA LIPP PHOTOGRAPHY IS HELPING YOU REACH YOUR FULLEST POTENTIAL

MIS SION

ARTICLE BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARICA LIPP PHOTOGRAPHY

G IV IN G BAC K | A RTS + CULTURE

Billings, Montana is home to some extraordinary women— Arica Lipp being one them. At first mention of her name, I learned about her desire to showcase a gallery of “40 over 40” women, and the work she’s already put into this project. With rich life experience in their toolbox, and Arica at their hip for photographing them, these women are sure to stun the community with their wisdom, stories, and beauty. And as for Arica? She’s putting herself on the map through branding, ballerinas, and so much more.

ARICA, AS I’M SURE YOU CAN RELATE, BEING A WOMAN CAN SOMETIMES MEAN MORPHING FROM ONE ROLE TO THE NEXT, AND MAYBE EVEN LETTING SOME PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF OURSELVES GO TO BETTER SERVE THE VERSION WE ARE TODAY. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT YOUR LIFE LOOKED LIKE PRIOR TO HAVING A FAMILY AND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE NOW? It’s really painful to let go of certain phases in your life that you have worked hard to create an identity with. The key is to keep hold of the things that are the core root of who you are and find a way to continue to be that person throughout your life. I was a dancer and an artist. I saw my body change over and over with bringing six children into this world. Mentally, emotionally, and physically that was hard, but of course it was worth it. When I created art in the past I needed absolute focus, no distractions. Well when little humans need your attention they just can’t coexist so that was put on the shelf for a while. I had to shift what was most important for me to seeing to my family’s needs and wants. It caused me to really let go of certain things and sacrifices had to be made. All too soon, things will circle back around and my energy will shift back towards my personal needs and pursuits. I have big plans for that stage but until then I try to give myself grace for indulging in foods that aren’t the healthiest or not getting to the gym every day because I’m too exhausted. I’m humbled by it. I am kept aware to extend that same love and grace to everyone else as well.

IN TERMS OF ARTISTRY, HOW DOES “CREATING” LEND LOYALTY TO ONESELF? I went through a phase in my early years as a photographer where I wasn’t listening to my own artist’s heart. I looked to my left and right and tried to do what everyone else was doing, thinking that would bring me business and also validation as a “real photographer.” It didn’t work. I wasn’t getting bookings. I’m so grateful for that! It forced me to say “I’m going to shoot my way!” It was the best thing I ever did! That was when my work started to capture attention. I also felt energy breathe back into me as I worked. I take what I do very seriously and I have a standard of achievement I try to hold myself to. When someone invests in me, I’m going to turn around and invest myself in them.

FROM YOUR WEBSITE, IT LOOKS LIKE BRANDING IS A BIG PART OF WHAT YOU DO AS A PHOTOGRAPHER. CAN YOU TELL US WHY BRANDING IS IMPORTANT WORK TO YOU AND WHAT YOU HOPE YOUR CLIENTS GET OUT OF IT? Tracy Moore, a wonderful mentor to me, said “you have to choose a specialty, you can’t shoot everything and be successful.” But what she really meant was to become memorable, you have to market as a specialist in something. I looked at my portfolio and saw a pattern. My best work (aside from my dance photography) were the portraits I took for business professionals. My slogan is “why be cookie cutter when you can be custom?” Businesses commonly make the biggest mistakes on even the most basic marketing decisions starting with the photos they are using. What I want to see happen for my clients is first, a rise in their own confidence as they love the photos representing them and 2. I want to see growth, more of their ideal clients being attracted to them. Photographs have the power to do that, or the opposite. it’s actually frightening when you think about it and not worth the risk of cutting corners.

22

G IV IN G BAC K | A RTS + CULTURE

CAN YOU SHARE WHAT THIS “40 OVER 40” PROJECT IS ALL ABOUT AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU? I’m not the first photographer to do a 40 over 40 project in the U.S. I am, however, doing it my own way, for my own reasons, and the first to do it here in Billings. I set a goal to photograph 40 women over the age of 40 this year. These women are strong, experienced, intelligent, and vibrant. My good friend Steve Bents from Social Montana did some research for me and made me aware that this demographic makes up 20% of the Billings population. That is a powerful force and they aren’t being seen, heard, or praised. So many women by nature and by society spend a greater part of their lives serving others, putting others’ needs before their own. I craved being able to photograph women individually in beautiful, extraordinary ways but women would shy away from the spotlight time and time again. They would only step in front of a camera for maternity or family photos, which of course is important, but it’s as if they didn’t feel like they had permission to get a portrait of

“I never imagined that I would be combining my two greatest passions in this way but it came so naturally.”

themselves unless they had a valid excuse for it. Each participant receives a one on one consultation to plan their unique photography experience. They start their shoot being pampered with professional hair and makeup services. We then spend two or more hours photographing them in all the ways they’ve requested—different outfits, looks, and in some cases locations are included. At the end I sit down and interview them. After the interview is over we look at all of the images I captured from their shoot. They pick their absolute favorite one and that is the one I will retouch and have enlarged for a beautiful print to hang in the celebratory gala! At the gala all 40 of the participants’ photos will be on display along with their bios and my favorite quote from our talks together for others to admire and feel inspired by.

I UNDERSTAND YOU ALSO LIKE TO PHOTOGRAPH DANCERS. CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THAT PASSION? DID YOU GROW UP DANCING OR IS IT PURELY JUST ABOUT THE ART FORM? Dance is the language of my soul. Dance is how a shy girl found her voice and self confidence. I never imagined that I would be combining my two greatest passions in this way but it came so naturally. I did some research on dance photography and discovered there is a huge need for education for photographers on this subject, and after being encouraged by a mentoring branding photographer, I now teach other photographers how to light, direct, and safely photograph dancers. I also teach them how to make a business out of it! In March, I took my teaching abroad and photographed a professional ballerina in France. I love bringing back my new knowledge and skills to the Billings community!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF MOTHERHOOD AND HOW DOES THAT PART OF YOUR LIFE SCULPT THE WORK YOU DO? My favorite part of motherhood has been to participate in their creation process. By that I mean, they are active participants with me, my husband, and God in creating who they will become. I’m the first to admit to them that I’m not perfect but that I love them unconditionally and only try to counsel and protect them to the best of my ability. I try to set an example for them that we each were created with special skills and when we are true to that purpose, cumulatively we make this world an amazing place. No matter how old I get, my eyes will continue to see others with an eye that seeks to find their goodness and share it with others. It is probably the greatest lesson I can teach my children.

Financially Fit ELIZABETH HANSEN SHARES THE POWER OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION

Does finances feel like a dirty word? Financial health is so integral to each facet of our lives, and like any type of wellness, education is the fastest way to get there. Senior Vice President of Five Rings Financial/Big Sky Agency Elizabeth Hansen talks in dollar signs—how to save, how to spend, and where to do both.

1. ELIZABETH, CAN YOU GIVE ME A SNAPSHOT OF WHAT YOU OFFER AS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF FIVE RINGS FINANCIAL WITH BIG SKY AGENCY? We offer anything from help with budgeting, retirement planning, college savings plans, to life insurance with living benefits. We specialize in retirement plans that go up when the market goes up and when the market goes down, they just stay level. I love protecting my client’s retirement dollars from any market loss. I also really love protecting all of the wealth that they are growing with living benefits. Our living benefits allow our clients to access their life insurance dollars if they get sick or injured. Overall, I’m here to show you the avenues on how to reach your money goals.

2. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CURATE FREE FINANCIAL CLASSES FOR MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN. FINANCIAL EDUCATION IS SUCH A HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR LIFELONG DECISION MAKING. CAN YOU SHARE HOW SOMEONE CAN ACCESS THESE CURATED CLASSES? We offer three classes every month: Money101, for anyone to learn the basics of how money works. The second class is Wine, Women & Wealth. Historically speaking, women have been very under-served in the financial industry so this is a place for us to get together, talk a little about money, and then we get an opportunity

for networking and growing our community. Lastly, we have Money, Mommy & Me, for anyone who wants to learn how to teach the next generation about how money works. We also talk about saving for college. All of our classes are free to attend and we post all of our events on Facebook, Meetup, and LinkedIn.

3. I’D LOVE TO KNOW WHAT THE BIGGEST FINANCIAL MISTAKE YOU SEE ON A REGULAR BASIS IS, AND HOW BEST TO FIX IT. Honestly, the biggest mistake I see is not asking for help. I think we all feel like we have to just be innately good at handling money but no one is teaching us how to do that. If you didn’t have parents that were good with money, who would you go to? Build a budget and stick to it, check it every week and budget for everything you spend money on, and track it.

4. WHAT’S THE EASIEST, SIMPLEST, DAILY WAY TO SAVE MONEY? The best way to save money is to make it habitual. If you are offered a retirement plan at work and your employer is matching—that’s free money! Take it! Most banks will also do automatic, scheduled transfers to savings accounts but if your bank doesn’t offer that, just think of contributing to your savings as another bill. On the same day every month, you owe your savings account a set amount of money. Budget for it. The old saying goes: pay yourself first, so when you get paid, save first before you spend.

5. EVERYONE HAS THEIR “GUILTY PLEASURES” LIKE A HOBBY OR FAVORITE DRINK/SNACK. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOURS IS AND WHY IT’S WORTH THE MONEY? Well, I actually really like the craft beer scene here in Billings. Our good friends own Thirsty Street Brewing and they have turned me into a total beer snob! I also used to have an office inside of the Last Chance Cider Mill and was spoiled with getting to try all of the ciders there as well. We have such great local small businesses right here and I think it’s always worth it to put back into someone’s dream. I especially love our downtown and whenever I want to give into temptation, the restaurants and breweries here are just fantastic.

6. IF YOU COULD BROADCAST ONE THING ABOUT FINANCIAL HEALTH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Give yourself some grace. We all make mistakes. That’s what makes us human and that’s how we learn. The problem arises when we do make a mistake, we beat ourselves up so much because we aren’t perfect and then we miss the opportunity to get better. When we are embarrassed about our financial past, or about our future, we avoid getting help. I hope that I can provide the Billings community with a place to feel welcome and to have a support system, and to find that roadmap on how to reach their financial goals.

in reality, the trouble is just disguised as something uncomfortable, like a risk. Risks are often seen as foolish, and they can be, but it's also true what they say: big risk, big reward. I'd tell my younger self that failing is the scar we have for going after something that meant something to us. Dreams, hard-to-reach spots, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities are always something to go for with full enthusiasm.
