Spring is upon us in Billings! The grass and trees are starting to sprout and bud and our community is preparing for a wonderful season of exploration.

Not that many springs ago, I remember sitting in my office staring out at the people in cars driving. The hustle and bustle of traffic buzzing by caught my interest and I started to notice the faces of the folks going to and fro. There was one constant: smiles. Spring does that to any community who experiences it, especially after any severity of winter. There's a certain anticipation in the air and in our spirits this time of year and it's in the beauty of potential where we sit and indulge.

At City Lifestyle Billings, we are excited for everything that spring brings to our city. There are opportunities to see things in a new light, whether that means breathing new life into something from yesteryear or quite literally planting seeds for a future bounty. We'll be readying our garden beds, gearing up for new hiking trails we haven't hit, and planning new camping trips right here in our own backyard. Nobody Gets Out Alive

Leigh Newman's fictional debut story collection Author Leigh Newman is a delectable treat for any reader but specifically for those like us: wilderness dwellers. While her fictional debut story collection Nobody Gets Out Alive is set in Alaska, her rich depth of perspective and personal experience in this vast jewel of a place is what grounds us—and her characters—throughout the entire collection.

For anyone who has read her memoir, Still Points North, this story collection is seemingly a fictional sequel to the grandiose theme of survival—something that we Northwesterners often refer to in a physical sense due to our population of grizzly bears, mountain lions, and moose among other fanged or big-bodied creatures. In her memoir, Leigh explores her surroundings for all of us to see and feel. When she gasps, we gasp. And Nobody Gets Out Alive is true to that tone but sets out on several different journeys of survival only to circle back to one shivering discovery: that survival isn' the end game. Her steadfast loyalty to the wilderness we all find ourselves in—physically and emotionally—creates the perfect canvas for each character to manipulate, and when layered one on top of the other, we feel new versions of Alaska come alive in our hands.

Leigh brings all of a woman's complexities to the forefront with equal parts softness and pugnacity. Her characters are not too hardshelled by their state of residence nor by their life experience for us to snag small, beautiful moments of sharp truth. Leigh lends us just enough details about their pasts to suspend our disbelief that these women are indeed our mothers, sisters, daughters, or friends. Their decorative worlds are so expertly articulated and Alaska itself starts to feel like a character who morphs from one story to the next.

These tales about women trudging through the difficult landscape of a male-dominated Alaskan society remind us of our stark reality: that nobody gets out alive. There is no first class seat that avoids the turbulence of divorce, abuse, secrets, family, or friendships. In fact, despite our level of comfort with flying, we're all aboard the puddle jumper because these pages are the great Alaskan adventure and there isn't another way to get there.

Brunch

Brunch in Billings just sort of rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? The Sassy Biscuit Co. sure thinks so, which is why when you think of brunch you should think of scratch-made biscuits with an ambiance that's just as enticing.

Owner and Chef Jilan Hall-Johnson, along with her husband DeMarco, opened their bruncherie in 2018 and have created food that goes beyond the typical brunch fare.

“By combining my love for recipes with what I learned in culinary school, then adding those wholesome and delicious elements of brunch, I’m able to put my heart into it,” said Jilan.

The menu centers around Jilan’s homemade biscuit recipes: biscuit waffles, biscuit pancakes, and biscuit french toast. The biscuit theme started in Jilan’s home, making waffles for her children while her husband was away and on duty as a Marine.

“I was always looking for something they would eat and that I wanted to eat. We all enjoyed breakfast, so I experimented with recipes. They ate waffles for days on end. But, they had no complaints,” she joked.

Menu items pay tribute to Jilan’s family while showcasing her culinary flare.

“The names of the dishes hold sentimental value,” said Jilan. The ‘Julia’ is blueberry banana pancakes with chantilly cream. “We added a note in the description that the dish is pronounced ‘Jul-ya’ because it’s named after my grandmother and that’s how she pronounced her name.”

Other dishes honor Jilan’s parents. “The ‘Ma’ and ‘Pa’ are versions of oatmeal dishes they each made.

“My mom always had a homemade cake around and we’d cut a slice then pour her oatmeal over it,” said Jilan. For a more traditional eggs and bacon combo, they created the ‘Semper-Fi,’ named after the Marine motto and inspired by DeMarco’s experience in the service.

To match the atmosphere to the menu, Jilan and DeMarco added decor that reflects their history as a military family. Three main clocks on the wall are set to time zones where they have lived. Other clocks mark important dates in their lives.

“When we were designing the space, we wanted to include personal touches. I wanted it to be like coming over to eat at our house,” said Jilan.

Billings residents played a significant role in launching The Sassy Biscuit Co. “We felt so supported by the community while we were starting up,” said Jilan. “It was special to see so many people who wanted us to succeed. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.” To express that gratitude, they added a unique feature to the counter. “We made it out of Scrabble tiles and included the names of our contractors, architects, and people who helped make the restaurant a reality. It’s fun to watch customers at the counter as they see how many words they can find while waiting for their food.”

As with most military families, Jilan and DeMarco have moved again. However, that hasn’t stopped them from expanding to multiple locations.

“DeMarco is stationed at the Pentagon right now.

We’ve opened another bruncherie in New Hampshire and are getting set for a third in Boston,” Jilan said.

Back in Billings, the original restaurant is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Located downtown, near Brockel’s Chocolates, it continues to grow. They now cater special events and have added a new menu available only Thursday through Saturday from 3 to 9 p.m.

“We call it ‘Jook a Chicken Joint.’ We adapted our biscuit recipe into a bun for southern-style fried chicken sandwiches,” said Jilan. “It’s the alter ego of our brunch menu.” As they grow their franchise, Jilan and DeMarco never tire of seeing the fruits of their labor disappear from customers’ plates.

“When I experiment with recipes at home, then see other people enjoying my food, it brings a whole new experience to being a chef," said Jilan.

“It was special to see so many people who wanted us to succeed. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.”

EXPLORE ISLAND LIFE MONTANASTYLE ON WILD HORSE ISLAND STATE PARK Flathead Lake’s largest island sits off the western shore just past Big Arm Bay. The island is named for the small herd of wild horses that reside there but it is also home to bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and mule deer. Even bears make the occasional swim. Two-legged visitors can visit the island by boat. Keep in mind, there are limited landing sites and it will take you about an hour to paddle from the lakeshore to the island. For a hassle-free visit, book a seat on the shuttle provided by Big Arm Boat Rentals or opt for a personal charter through Wild Horse Island Boat Trips. WITNESS THE ART OF THE F O R E S T AT SCULPTURE IN THE WILD Stunning works of art weave through the sun-dappled woods just north of Lincoln at Sculpture in the Wild. Since its inception in 2014, this outdoor art installation has invited world-renown sculptors to create unique pieces that pay homage to the Blackfoot Valley’s heritage focusing on industry, environment and culture. A dirt path leads visitors past more than 14 largescale sculpture installations. Twigs swirl together in Tree Circus by Patrick Dougherty forming a hobbit-like house. Fifteen tons of newspapers compress to create Steven Siegel’s Hill and Valley. The park is free and open all year from dawn to dusk. Visit SculptureInTheWild.com for details.

GO UNDERGROUND AT LEWIS AND CLARK CAVERNS STATE PARK

Get ready for a subterranean adventure with a visit to one of the largest known limestone caverns in the Northwest. A tour through Lewis and Clark Caverns gives you the chance to see massive stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique cave formations as you learn about the history and formation of the cavern from a knowledgeable guide. Those with small children or limited mobility can take the Paradise Tour to experience the Paradise Room, the largest and most decorated area of the cave. For those looking for a greater challenge, chose the Classic Tour to navigate the twists and turns of the caverns on a two-mile journey up and down 600 stairs. You must be on a tour to access the caverns and a small fee is charged based on age. The caverns are located 15 miles east of Whitehall. Tours run from late May to late September. Old Butte Historical Adventures, ButteTour. info, takes you to the dank cells of the old jail where Butte’s native son, Evel Knievel, scrawled his name in the stone wall after a raucous night on the town. One of the most unique tours in Montana is Havre Beneath the Streets, HavreBeneathTheStreets.com. In 1904 three men set fire to town after being thrown out of a bar. They took their revenge by setting a fire that destroyed 60 buildings. Instead of packing up, the industrious townsfolk made the decision to move commerce to the massive steam tunnels that ran below the sidewalks. The tour lets you explore this underground city where businesses like Boone’s Drug Store, Wright’s Dentist Office, and Sporting Eagle Saloon sit frozen in time.

SIGNS OF SPRING A moment with nature

For April: Family Trees In tenth-grade biology class, Mrs. McGarry told us we could always remember what phloem was by thinking of food "flowing" through a plant or tree. Thank you, Mrs. McGarry—that little trick worked with me and probably with lots of other students.

Educators, along with other thoughtful adults, notably grandparents, occupy sacred ground in our world of memory.

Lamentably, a curse hovers over parents. When pressed, most teenagers will allow that their parents are basically lovable but are relative simpletons who ask annoying questions and make unfounded assumptions.

Although parents may not be the wisest branches on the family tree, they're old enough to know they shouldn't take seriously any insult coming from a twig. And most parents are glad when children seek and find their own mentors.

The phloem of family knowledge is often most potent when it comes from a grandparental branch. We can each remember a grand-dad, maybe even our own, who knew all about packhorses and who could slip a rope into any kind of a knot. He knew how to rig up the tent and start a campfire, even when the wood was wet and his fingers were stiff with cold. Or maybe he was the engineering type, who figured out how to move water from a spring to a cabin, or how to build a hot rod out of a sorry old beater.

Grandmothers offer knowledge that carries just as much zing.

My grandmother always said that Fels Naptha was the kind of soap to wash with if your wanderings had taken you through a patch of poison ivy. Folklore? Well, I've used Fels Naptha after many a brush with those serrated leaves and have never suffered an itch.

What magic there is in storytelling, and what a legacy is the sound of that maternal voice. I remember, as if it were just last night, slipping between cedar-scented sheets and listening to my grandmother read Thornton Burgess' tales of Mother West Wind and the animal children of the forest.

As greenery and blossom are borne to the surface by the irrepressible phloem of the millennia, a season unfolds. Spring has sprung, and there are memories to be made.

For April 21 or 28: A New Leaf It has happened. The bony branches of February became heavy with buds in March, looking like so many plump beads on a string. April slowly coaxed the buds into taking off their coats and out popped millions of fluttering green leaves.

As April matures into May, the leaves will become commonplace, but there is something unique and special about them right now. They are still tender, still translucent, colored with a liquid green. We'll see that color again, midsummer, when the evening sun slants through the trees and makes brilliant stripes on the grass. It's the warm chartreuse of a fine peridot, one of the best greens around.

The willows, especially the weeping willows, look like something out of a storybook. Their graceful gold limbs are like trailing tendrils of ivy, soft and feathery. Who doesn't want to pull over and go have a closer look? The lilacs will come on soon, with their slightly more sober-toned leaves hiding infant buds of pale lavender.

Willow, lilac, ash, aspen…each leaf is a little window, a tiny portal leading us to consider nature's most awe-inspiring power—the furious chaos of growth.

Things seem to expand at the rate of a centimeter an hour. Cell upon cell, random microscopic action firing over and over, with no apparent road map other than a yearning for the warm fingers of the sun.

When it's all done, what do we have? Not an irregular glob, not a haphazard arrangement of protoplasm, but instead a leaf. A symmetrical, magical, living, breathing leaf. She's done it again: Mother Nature has infused matter with life and produced art.

Surrounded as we are right now by a world dizzy with potentiality, it makes sense that we might be a little dizzy, too. Spring fever, they call it. We mustn't ever forget to acquire a case of spring fever, not ever. If you aren't dizzy, go outside and find something to marvel at. Pretend you're in high school, trapped in math class, staring out the window and feeling the strongest inexplicable yearning you've ever felt. Let the wildness of spring pour through you like the furious chaos of growth. May is almost here and it's time to dance.

Germantown is a little more upscale with its chef-driven restaurants and walkable nature, known as Nashville’s first neighborhood founded by German settlers. 12South has eateries, boutique shopping and a lot of local favorites.
