LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Warm Welcome

March 2022 PUBLISHER

Richard Boggs | Richard.Boggs@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR

Chelsea Lyn Agro | Chelsea.Agro@CityLifestyle.com

Billings is a magical place. It's a city grounded in its deep history but it's also poised and ready to lead brightly into the future—one that we hope is exciting and filled with community, health, and wealth. With overwhelming gratitude we rejoin this community with a new mission, ready to make a positive impact on that future. In all of the time that I've lived here, one thing is certainly apparent of he wonderful community that we call home: the people that live here care about each other. We stop to help someone on the side of the road and we shovel snow for a neighbor. The city cares about its own. The amount of optimism and genuine excitement shown from neighborhood to neighborhood is infectious. It's our belief that not only should that kindness be noticed but celebrated, too. And with this publication we plan on doing just that. We choose to focus on local businesses and citizens that are doing right by our community, and that means doing right by you, our dear reader. It's our goal to not only inform but also entertain. Without the talented, generous, and whip smart people who live here, Billings wouldn't be what it is today. Join us in the joy of revealing special stories about seemingly ordinary people or businesses. After all, everyone and everything has a story worth telling. Some stories may be about big risks or big love, and some might be about lifelong passion or new beginnings. Whatever the case may be, we're here to shine a light on human connectedness. As the new publisher of City Lifestyle Billings, I am filled with hope and excitement for what the future brings both personally and professionally. RICHARD BOGGS, PUBLISHER @BILLINGSCITYLIFESTYLE

Thread sketching is not precision sewing. It is about catching the essential shapes and lines of the subject, like a line drawing done with pen and ink. Your lines do not always need to meet up, nor do you need to include every detail. The basic premise is that once you begin sewing you don’t start or stop (“break thread”) but continue stitching over to the next section. Visit CrookedLineStudio.com.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS A REAL ESTATE AGENT AND INTERIOR DESIGNER NAVIGATE SELLING HOMES TOGETHER Selling a home in today’s market? Seems like a no-brainer. But in truth, selling a home in any market takes strategy and style, and married couple Shawna and Wes Morales know that a well staged home can bring the right buyer to their dream property.

12

privilege of seeing beautiful properties as both a sellers agent and buyers agent. I get to know my clients and their families and develop relationships that transcend a real estate transaction.

SHAWNA, WHAT GOT YOU INTO REAL ESTATE? FURTHERMORE, WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A REAL ESTATE AGENT IN BILLINGS?

YOU HAVE A GORGEOUS LISTING ON GREGORY DRIVE. GORGEOUS WITH A CAPITAL G! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS PROPERTY AND SOMETHING THAT A POTENTIAL HOME BUYER WOULD ENJOY?

I have always loved architecture and design but I also love meeting new people. My career as a real estate agent combines both. I have the

This listing is the definition of luxury! My favorite part of this property is the outdoor living space. When you walk out of the home and into

the outdoor space, you are transported to a resort in your own backyard. The saltwater pool, covered hot tub, lounging area, and quiet surroundings truly make you feel like you have left Montana.

IT’S TRUE THAT YOU WORK CLOSELY WITH YOUR HUSBAND WHO IS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER. TELL US WHAT THAT’S LIKE AND HOW A ‘BEST DRESSED’ HOME COMES TO FRUITION/ MEETS YOUR VISION. Wes is truly the designed behind all of my listings. When he walks into a home that we are getting ready to list the vision just comes to him. He brings everything together from the furniture to the accessories to the floral arrangements. He does it all!

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU WISH YOU COULD BROADCAST TO EVERY HOME BUYER? My best advice to someone looking to buy a home is to work with someone you trust. You want your best interests at the forefront of their mind and not how quickly they can get you under contract. Make sure you are truly getting what you want in your next home.

WHEN SOMEONE IS WANTING TO SELL THEIR HOME, WHAT’S YOUR GOLDEN PIECE OF ADVICE? If you want your home to be sold quickly and for top dollar, stage it. As part of my listing package I include staging for all of my clients. If nothing else, the home needs to be decluttered. Pack away as much of your personal items as you can to allow the buyer to see your home and not your personal items. Statistics show that properties that are staged sell quicker and at a higher price point. It matters who you work with!

WES, INTERIOR DESIGN IS SUCH AN ART FORM. IT’S TRANSFORMATIONAL REALLY. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION? For me, the best part of what I do is seeing the homeowner’s reaction when I’m finished staging their home to sell. The client immediately sees the value and their home is presented in the best possible way to attract the most buyers.

LASTLY, TELL US ABOUT HOW PASSION PLAYS A ROLE IN YOUR SUCCESS (AS BOTH A REAL ESTATE AGENT AND AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER). Wes and I love what we do and we love that we get to do it together. We both have high expectations for ourselves and each other. CONTINUED >

MARCHING THROUGH WINTER PRESSING PAUSE FOR A MOMENT WITH NATURE ARTICLE BY SARIE MACKAY

In 1890, scientist and philosopher Henri Poincare published a paper demonstrating that Sir Isaac Newton’s discoveries about mechanical action did not apply to all activity in the natural world. For example, Poincare found that some minute differences in the initial conditions of his experiments produced very great differences in the final phenomena. About eighty years later, Edward Lorenz expanded Poincare’s theory and began writing about—what else?—the weather. CONTINUED >

He coined the term “sensitive dependence,” meaning that certain natural systems evolving around us are dependent in a highly sensitive way to influences we may not even notice. Thus, the concept of “chaos” as a natural process was admitted into the scientific lexicon. What makes a quiet stream begin to eddy? Does the flap of an eagle’s wing set a breath of air in motion that combines with the sun’s thermal energy to eventually produce a breeze in your back yard? What makes snowflakes form the way they do? And what of the melting ice of March? Whenever we do not have every tiny piece of information about a system, we have the potential for chaos. Chaos often has a negative association. It makes us think of anarchy, unrest, and in some cases, violence. But chaos is as natural—perhaps even more natural—than order. One of the principles of chaos theory is that an unstable system will bifurcate, or “branch” in its efforts to self-organize. From this branching

20

comes some of the most beautiful forms ever witnessed by the human eye—the jagged relief of a mountain range, the luminous craters of the moon, a bolt of lightning across a somber sky, the pattern of a leafless tree against the sunset, and the delicate arrangement of water molecules we know as snowflakes. Although this divine disorder of chaos is all around us every minute of every day, it seems to me more noticeable at this time of year. We are poised at the end of the familiar landscape of winter, with its quiet, frozen systems…systems that are about to become unstable due, oftentimes, to influences we may not see (or perhaps better stated, influences we do not notice). Spring is a time when nature’s divine disorder becomes raucous and colorful enough to at last get our attention. How can we miss the formation of the leaves on the trees, or the peculiar arrangement of protoplasm that coalesces out of nowhere to emit the fragrance of a daffodil? All hail, for the remarkable, the lovely, the joyous chaos of spring is on its way.

March is finally here! That means BASEBALL! Well at least traditionally, March is baseball in the Valley of the Sun. For full disclosure, this ad was designed in late January to meet production requirements, so we don’t know what Spring Training will bring this year, but we hope it will be back in full “swing”. You might recognize the background photo as the Billings Mustangs logo from a few years ago. I photographed the Mustangs action shots, baseball cards, and team photos for a few seasons. It is still a great time to invest in Arizona real estate with interest rates at historic lows and the Arizona housing market projected to continue to climb in value. Spring is a really beautiful time to be in Arizona. The spring cactus flowers are blooming, providing color everywhere! The temps are warm and there is so much to do! If you are considering an investment property or planning your retirement housing options, I am here to help you explore the Arizona lifestyle. Dixie Yelvington finds balance between business and personal to produce intriguing work ARTICLE BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARISSA BARONE

22

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

Motherhood, graphic design, artistry. There are no hard lines between the things we do in life, just blurry areas where one fades into the other and really, that’s the beauty of it all. Dixie Yelvington is an artist, mother, and graphic designer. Her professional work is structured and challenging, inspiring her to reach for her best self and put forth her best work for her clients. Meanwhile, her personal artwork is more free flowing and unpredictable—the perfect flip side to her professional life. Motherhood has a way of bringing Dixie back to her inner child, and being an artist helps her hone in on those memories and state of being. Her work is a brilliant layering of images, emotions, and messages that come together organically throughout the creative process. “I collected keys and rocks and feathers—all of those things that can be shiny and pretty—as a kid so with [my daughter] being in there [the image] is about how she’s going to chose who she becomes. The key to that mystery, that unlocking of potential,” said Dixie. She’s referring to an image she created of her daughter in a dress with keys of all varieties. There’s a certain innocence and mystery of what the future holds that the image suggests and it takes Dixie away from the adult way of thinking that rationalizes or becomes easily distracted by to-do lists. “I’m a graphic designer and a lot of times when I’m doing design work for people I have to pretty much create what they have in their mind, so this has really pushed me to say ‘what do I see and what do I really want and what matters to me?’ said Dixie. “It’s been more of a personal journey getting back to that inner child.” Dixie shared what it’s like to transition from her business mind to her personal artistry and explains that it’s a completely different mindset. “When it comes to the work I do on my own I tend to do more whimsical storytelling,” said Dixie. Her images are a testament to this eccentric style, pulling the viewer in for a closer look at the depth and color of her work. When on display, Dixie’s images are presented raw and finished, meaning she exposes what was shot in the camera and what that image became after she worked on it through her many processes in Photoshop.

“It’s really a transformational process,” said Dixie. “It’s all about problem solving. How can I tell this story the way I want to? And it’s not always obvious what the story is at first.” Dixie explained that discovery is a huge part of her process and dedication to artistry. She is constantly surprised by her work and how each process can be so different from the next, depending on which images she has at that time. When there’s a very specific end result in mind, that often lends frustration and desire for shortcuts and other undesirable emotions when attempting to create in an open minded environment. But when she allows the opportunity for art to choose its own path, Dixie is able to follow those intuitions and watch the art take its own shape and ultimately reach a gratifying conclusion. And of course, it isn’t always so romantic or simple. Failure is inevitable. “You have to take risks,” said Dixie. “Do things, you’re gonna fail sometimes.” It’s true that desires and skill sets aren’t always on the same level. “I see it in my kids all the time. That struggle and that learning, and then they have one good rest and the next day they master it,” said Dixie. She is constantly inspired by her children Varick and Mira and they appear in much of her personal artwork. Empowering portraiture is what Dixie is calling her current work and she encourages those who are in search of a personal piece of artwork to consider a meaningful portrait that is based on emotion and symbolism. “It’s like capturing and developing a client’s dream self,” said Dixie. And what could be more meaningful than that? Dixie creates her artwork by taking photographs in her studio located in Billings, Montana. She then digitally enhances and sometimes combines her images into one cohesive whole while masterfully adding moody color adjustments, symbolic elements and ethereal textures to express the subject’s hidden inner world. She typically prints her images onto canvas or polyester fabric. Special acrylic accents are added to some of her final prints to further enhance those images. She is inspired by her children and the treasures she collected from her youth. Both have opened her mind to a new world of wonder and magic. CONTINUED >

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.

Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
