A NEW SERVICE FOR CAR BUYERS ARTICLE ROBERT SAUNDERS | PHOTOGRAPHY DANIEL KESSEL - ALIENATED PRODUCTIONS

K

EITH BISHOP IS A MAN WITH A MISSION: TO DRAMAT-

ICALLY SIMPLIFY AND IMPROVE THE WAY HIS CLIENTS BUY AND SELL CARS. His goal is to provide a positive and stress-free car-buying experience across a wide range of products. His company, Clarity Automotive, will do almost anything: sell clients’ cars for them, help them find find a pre-owned car, handle the process of buying a new car from a dealership, and even manage a fleet of company vehicles. Think of him as equal parts real estate agent, personal shopper, and high-end concierge.

For those unsure of exactly what they want, Bishop can provide, well, Clarity.

Keith grew up in Billings and got his degree in Mechanical Engineering from MSU Bozeman. After graduating, he spent a year in California working in Automotive and Aerospace Engineering. He then came back to Billings in 2005 and worked in a number of engineering and motor vehicle jobs, most notably spending ten years in service and sales at the Caterpillar Dealership. In 2020, Keith decided to put his two decades of training and experience to use and started his own company in the automotive space. Clarity Automotive provides three basic categories of services: brokering pre-owned vehicles, facilitating new car purchases, managing fleets of company vehicles. Like a real estate agent, Bishop will gladly list a car or help the client find the used car they want. Unlike a real estate agent, his fees do not scale with the price of the vehicle: his base fee is $200, while his full-service package is $550. For the discriminating collector, Clarity Automotive saves valuable time: they sort through the thousands of online listings and bring their clients only the best. Keith has sold a range of vehicles, with some of the most interesting including a 1986 Mercedes 500 SL Convertible and a Land Rover Defender from the UK, complete with right-hand drive.

LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED)

For the lower-budget used car buyer, Clarity Automotive arguably provides an even more important function: doing the due diligence to weed out bad deals, saving their clients huge amounts of avoidable maintenance and repairs. While both low and high dollar buyers are probably strapped for time, those with lower budgets may not have the margin to absorb the blow of buying a lemon. Asking someone to spend an extra $200-$500 when buying a $3,000 car sounds steep, until they realize that using Clarity Automotive might save them thousands of dollars in unforeseen maintenance. What if the client wants a new car from a dealership? We’ve all been there: hours and hours with pushy salespeople, and hours more to actually close the deal. Keith has devised an innovative way to spare clients the headaches of dealing with OEM dealerships: he does it for them. For those unsure of exactly what they want, Bishop can provide, well, Clarity. Perhaps a client wants an SUV but isn’t particular about brand; Keith will find them a list of options in their price range, custom-tailored to their sensibilities.

ARTIST’S PALETTE

A NEW TREND IN INTERIOR DESIGN

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA LANGMAN

Maximalism MAXIMALISM IS THE NEW TREND. I can tell you why! I know it’s a strange word-- but if you’ve browsed Instagram or Pinterest lately, you’ve probably seen it. An increasing number of colorful, layered, and eclectic spaces are being snuck, stuck, and mixed into ubiquitous, white modern farmhouses and StudioMcGee interiors. Why? Where is it coming from? We first saw BOHO emerge as an extension of those white farmhouse spaces.

Shiplap walls,

wood floors, and lots of light were accessorized with a resurgence of macrame, unique artwork, textured linens on upholstered items, and lots of plants! Maximalism has entered the building. Whether as an evolution of BOHO or simply a rejection of minimalism- gone are the white walls. They’ve been replaced with saturated

Billings Lifestyle | May 2021

jewel tone paint colors like Emerald or even Black! Finishes, once contained in picture frames, have moved back to walls with the resurgence of wall-paper. This allows us to infuse drama in a relatively simple way - with a lot more punch than just a piece of art. Maximalism also is a style that should look like it was built up over time. It showcases the pieces that make each of us unique. That seashell you brought back from your beach vacation on display next to a vase you found at a local pottery shop. Mixing of materials. Even differing metal finishes in your space; like black on your light fixtures and gold tones in your dinnerware and art frames. To dip your toes in this style: start by adding layers and colors. Bring in a new houseplant and find a fabulous planter for it. Add some new non-matching lamps to your end tables for variety in lighting. Instead of a gallery wall of small items, find one large dramatic piece of art or a mirror to anchor a wall in your dining room. Mix and match patterns and textures with new throw pillows on your sofa. Inject your personality and have fun.

Installing an Overhead Door

THE T R A DE S 18

Billings Lifestyle | May 2021

A NEW PATH TO PROSPERITY?

BILLINGS’ RAPID GROWTH HAS BROUGHT UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY, BUT BROUGHT UNPRECEDENTED CHALLENGES ALONG WITH IT. Challenge, in turn, has brought new opportunities for innovation. Talk to any trades business in Yellowstone County and they will probably tell you that their biggest challenge is finding competent tradesmen. Trades businesses are busier than ever before, and they need an influx of new people ready to train and willing to work. Two local business owners gave a close up view of how the trade shortage is affecting their businesses, and the opportunities it provides for enterprising individuals. Matt Weber, owner of Alpha Overhead Door, says: “My ability to grow is constrained by my ability to find workers. In the short CONTINUED >

term I need three more Technicians and another Sales Associate. Right now, my sales people aren’t selling, they are fulltime order takers.” Weber’s advertising is no longer geared to finding people who want him to install and service garage doors: he is attempting to find people to join his 22-person team and service existing demand that is growing organically. Nor are these minimum-wage jobs; his lowest paid employees start at a $15/hour training wage, rapidly rising to around $20 an hour. His highest paid technicians make about $30 an hour, or almost $70,000 a year. Put it another way: Weber’s lowest-paid employees can support a family on a single income; his highest-paid employees make as much as a typical person with a Master’s degree. More importantly, none of Alpha’s employees need a degree, and almost all of their training is done on the job. On top of that, the company offers a strong benefits and employer-matching retirement plans. Alpha Overhead Door began in 1996 as RW Enterprises and has grown steadily since then. Since Matt took over for his father Bob the growth has been exponential, the result of the economic boom and a strong local reputation. Weber’s goal is to have forty-nine employees and three new locations in the next five years. Matt is seeking a specific kind of employee to grow with his company. “I strongly believe in upward mobility. There’s a place at my company for people who just want to come to work and cash paychecks, but I’m seeking people who want more than that. I’m growth minded, and we provide training and education for people who want to move up the ranks.”

THE TRADES (CONTINUED)

The only path forward, it seems, is for more people to get into the trades. In an era and an industry ripe for innovation, people who otherwise might pursue white collar professions should consider a career in the trades industry, where their gifts might help usher in a new era of advancement. Greg thinks that the new business environment calls for a new kind of small business owner: “Entrepreneurial people who understand the trades can build a beautiful business and make a good living as well.” He mentioned concrete, tile, trim, roofing, and painting as lucrative opportunities, but used framing as an example. “Right now, a good team of inside framers could make $120,000 a year per person.” Apart from the financial incentives, Greg suggested that people interested in doing good for society shouldn’t rule out a career in the trades. “For a long time, everybody wanted to be doctors and lawyers. But, you don’t want to create a situation where the only people who can afford housing are doctors and lawyers because there aren’t enough people to do the building.”

85TH

OF

MONTAGUE’S JEWELERS. As the oldest jewelry store in Billings, Montague’s has a long and intimate history with the city. As I talked with third-generation owner Chris Montague in his store on 2nd Avenue North, I learned a lot about jewelry, family history, and our community. Chris’ grandparents, Wally and Lois Montague, founded the store on May 12, 1937 at 2817 2nd Avenue North - just across the street from Montague’s current location. Wally Montague apprenticed with a jeweler in Driggs, Idaho; after completing his training, he decided to open his own store in Billings. He was purposeful in his selection of community: Billings was the commercial hub for the region then as it is now. As with many new business owners, the Montague family started out with adversity. The great flood happened one week after they opened their store, ruining both their downtown shop and their midtown apartment. What happened next is a familiar story: Billings’ community stepped in. Chris Montague says, “Billings took them in, fed them food, gave them lodging, and helped them rebuild.” With the community’s help, Wally and Lois reopened their store and have been a fixture in the community ever since. In a Chris Montague

virtuous circle, Billings’ generosity inspired the Montague family to give back, and they have been active in local

philanthropy for three generations. Currently, Chris Montague supports around thirty charitable organizations with gifts of cash or jewelry: Tumbleweed, which his mother helped found; the Food Bank, Eagle Mount, the hospital foundations, the Montana Land Reliance, and the Boys and Girls Club are among his favorites. As a six-year member of the board of directors for the Billings Symphony, I can attest to the consistency and quality of the pieces Montague’s has donated for auctions at our fundraisers. A nine-decade family business has its share of stories, but one of Chris’ favorites comes from the World War II era. At the time, the family had recently hired and trained Otis Hopper, a longtime fixture for Billings watch aficionados. Otis started out as a railroad man and lost his leg in an accident; Wally gave him a chance at a new career, and Otis did watch work for the Montague’s for sixty years. During World War II, Wally and Otis offered free watch service for US military servicemen - a significant offer in an era when nearly every man wore a watch. The next few decades were full of changes. Business flourished during the postwar boom, and that prosperity lasted till Billings’ economy crashed during the 1980s. Unable to make things work in a time that gutted downtown Billings, Montague’s consolidated to their West Park Plaza location, then Rimrock Mall, remaining there for eighteen years until Chris Montague returned the store downtown in 2003, where he plans to stay for good. For a while they had two stores - one on 2nd Avenue downtown, and one in Rimrock Mall. Now, they have two stores downtown: the jewelry store, and a shop that specializes in sterling silver jewelry, baby items and giftware. If you’ve walked 26

by their downtown store, you might erroneously assume that their relatively small storefront has a limited selection. In fact, Montague’s carries a surprisingly large and diverse assortment of pieces: their offerings range from $25 and up silver items at the silver store to prestige pieces that sell for tens of thousands of dollars. As I browsed a bit, I was impressed by the quality of some of the stones in his collection. Space constraints are real, as they are in any business, so Montague has focused finding the very highest quality pieces, and his attention to detail shows. Montana is renowned for its Yogo Sapphires, and Montague’s carries a nice selection. Men and women alike will be awed, as I was by his small but exquisite portfolio of ultrahigh quality Colombian emeralds, featured in a ring, two pairs of earrings, and a tennis bracelet. Rubies are another gem that Montague does well: his current supply includes a number of superb and tasteful pendants and bracelets with the famous blood red-colored gem. Diamonds of course are there in abundance. This being the Men’s Issue, I wanted to talk a bit about premium watches, and Chris Montague has a lot to say on the subject if you ask him. He carries a nice range of premium watches for both men and women, and is always on the hunt for great pieces. If you know what to look for, there are good deals to be had on premium watches via well-preserved vintage pieces. Conversely, certain vintage brands and makes are much more expensive than new ones. If you want a fine Swiss watch, Montague can find almost anything. Chris Montague’s philosophy is simple: he finds the best pieces and sells them to his customers at fair prices. You’ll never see a 60-70% off sale at Montague’s because the savings are already there. Pricing things fairly the first time around has been their philosophy from the beginning. At large stores or online, one can find an almost infinite selection, including a nearly equally large

number of mediocre or subpar pieces. Montague does the online shopper’s work for him: his carefully curated collection saves shoppers the trouble of sorting through thousands of items, allowing everyone to find the truly best piece for their budget. When not curating jewelry or serving on boards, Montague likes to take advantage of the Big Sky Country’s offerings to the utmost. He enjoys both backcountry and downhill skiing, especially around Yellowstone Park and Cooke City. Fly fishing, golf, and tennis round out his athletic interests, along with a passion for reading, particularly historical nonfiction. Obviously passionate about our community, Montague has one

owned businesses, the more money stays in our community, the more we can all grow together. For Montanans in particular, neighbors supporting each other means survival in difficult times and magnified abundance in good times. Much like 85 years before, Billings stepped up to support Montague’s in 2020. In what was a difficult year for many, the Magic City community purchased dozens of custom pieces and hundreds of engagement rings at Montague’s, keeping his business profitable and allowing him to continue his charitable giving uninterrupted. Three generations of Montague’s tell the same story many of us have: individuals, families, and businesses supporting the community and being taken care of by the community.

CULINARY CREATIONS

Light and Flavorful Antipasti

T he A r t of Cha rcuter ie ARTICLE JESSICA BICKHAM

CHARCUTERIE IS AN AMAZING SPREAD FOR ANY PARTY. There are so many options that are bursting with flavor. I’ve done charcuterie boards for informal get-togethers and decadent galas, with budgets from $100 to $2,500. Throughout the years I have come to find that in most situations, a charcuterie spread is at least part of the answer to throwing the best party ever. Here are a few suggestions to help get you started. Your task is to take the basic building blocks of flavors and make them your own.

30

CREATING THE PERFECT SPREAD FOR ANY OCCASION

Charcuterie Board Highlighted by Caviar in the Center

BOARD #1 CAVIAR Caviar is sometimes forgotten when planning charcuterie, but it adds instant class to your display and comes with many options! If it’s in the budget, you can spend $4,500 a pound for beluga caviar from the distant and exotic Caspian Sea, or as little as $40 for Alaskan salmon roe. No matter what kind of party you’re throwing, the universally-known delicacy brings a feeling of decadence and old world charm to any charcuterie board. Don’t forget to add the little extravagances that complement caviar: capers and dill, smoked salmon, tartare, and cured meats from around the world or your local butcher. Whether your budget is high or low, make sure that you call around and find all of the options available in our community.

CULINARY CREATIONS (CONTINUED) A Balanced Spread of Fruits, Meats, Cheeses and Honey

BOARD #2 LOCAL Do everything local: artisan breads, meats, and even fruits! We live in Montana, and a beautiful huckleberry, chokecherry, or buffalo berry jam can make a world of difference. You can pick the berries yourself or meet neighbors by supporting your local businesses and farmers. I grew up on a ranch where we sourced our own local honey, and one of my favorite adventures in doing charcuterie is finding local honeycombs. Honeycombs are a handsome addition to any charcuterie board and one of the healthiest things you can have on your menu!

Balanced Board Centered Around Spanish Tapas

BOARD #3 CHEESE Cheese, cheese, and more cheese: from Bleu Cheese and Cheddar to Brie and Gouda, the sky is the limit. I try to always add in any local source possible, including goat cheese. Be sure to spend time tasting the cheeses you add into your charcuterie and add your own special touches. Always try to offer some things that your guests may never have had before. Whatever you’re offering, put your own spin on it. Put your own signature on each of your masterpieces and continue to work on perfecting your own unique charcuterie art.

BUILDING HOME POSSIBILITIES

Before our remodel I was embarrassed to host parties or have company in our kitchen. It was crowded, dark, outdated, and not vey functional. After Ty Nelson's amazing renovation, I now love hosting people and we are so proud of our kitchen. To say we highly recommend Ty Nelson Design & Remodel would be an understatement!” ~ Pat and Jamie Carahasen
