How to Prepare Your Parents for the New Year Ahead The New Year brings in new traditions and resolutions. It also brings new frustrations, worries, and struggles, especially if you are caring for an elderly parent. Try a different New Year’s Resolution this year: less stress. Here are a few tips to relieve stress in the new year when caring for elderly parents.
TAKE INVENTORY: Take inventory of the medications your parents are taking and their schedule. Are they taking different medication than they were last year? Is the dosage different? Sometimes even saving their medication schedule in your phone for future reference can relieve stress if something unexpected comes up.
GET FAMILIAR: Get familiar with your elderly parent’s physical and mental limitations. Are there any physical limitations that they didn’t have last year? Maybe they are struggling to carry heavier things or need more help with housekeeping then they did before. Do they remember appointments and dates as well as they did before? All these things can be stressful, but being prepared for it and making a plan can make the situation less difficult.
ASK FOR HELP: You don’t have to go this alone. There are many options for in home care for when you can’t be there to assist them. If they need help 24/7 or just 2-3 hours a week, a trained caregiver can assist them whenever they need it. Your health is just as important as theirs. If you are over extending yourself to take care of your loved ones, looking into a caregiver could relieve some of the stress in the coming year.

“IT ’S DEMANDING, BUT IT BUILDS CAMARADERIE ,” TRE VOR SAYS.
CROSSFIT YELLOWSTONE CROSSFIT “CROSSFIT IS ACTUALLY PRETTY SIMPLE,” TREVOR CRAIG OF YELLOWSTONE CROSSFIT SAYS. “It’s the concept of performing varied functional movements at high intensity.” This fitness trend, which has gained popularity in the last 10 years, incorporates high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics and other functional movements in a way that’s meant to keep your body guessing. Each workout is different and challenging, which can seem intimidating. But Trevor says that couldn’t be further from the truth. “Every movement and weight is able to be scaled for a person’s ability, weight, age or injury," he says. "Because of this, CrossFit is for everyone.” It’s also about creating a community. “It’s demanding, but it builds camaraderie,” Trevor says. “Respect is given to anyone insane enough to do some of the things we do. The person finishing last is cheered loudest because we all know the effort involved.” CONTINUED >

PURE BARRE BILLINGS A low-impact workout, Pure Barre combines strength exercises, mind-muscle connection and stretching to create long, lean muscles. In a one-hour class, you’ll get a total body workout and a clear mind. “Pure Barre is more than a workout; it’s a lifestyle,” Pure Barre owner Tanya Ferber says. Each class begins with a warm-up before moving into weighted arm work and lower body exercises at the barre. Stretching is used throughout to lengthen the muscles. While the flow of each class is the same, the movements are always changing, so no two classes are alike. For an added cardio challenge, a new class called Pure Empower increases the intensity to raise your heart rate even more while following the same principles. “Pure

admits. “But it’s modifiable for all levels and a great compliment to our classic class. “Come, try a free week with us,” she says. “Our Pure Barre community is inspiring and empowered.”
TELOS FITNESS
Telos Fitness Center Dolan Hornbeck calls Telos a hybrid gym. “At Telos, you get access to a typical fitness center, but also have the community, teaching and support of a studio gym,” Dolan says. Part of that means making personal training more accessible by providing each member with workout programming. You’ll never have to create your own workout here–Telos will do that for you. It’s a unique, personalized approach to hitting the gym. So, what’s a typical Telos workout like? In one word: dynamic. The always changing workouts feature weights, kettlebells, TRX bands, body weight calisthenics, gymnastics and more. This not only makes each training session interesting but it also delivers great results. “We took the best features of different disciplines and put them under one roof,” Dolan says. “We combined that with great facilities, child care and all the equipment a person needs to reach their fitness goals.”

ORANGETHEORY Orangetheory Billings New to Billings, Orangetheory is sweeping the nation with its heart rate-based interval training. Hour-long workouts are designed to utilize the science of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC. “It’s a fancy way of saying you’ll continue to burn calories up to 36 hours after you finish your workout,” Tempe Connel, owner of Orangetheory Billings, explains. “We call it the afterburn.” Combining the energy of a group workout with the attention of an experienced coach, Orangetheory is a one-hour, full-body workout focused on training endurance, strength and power. You’ll wear a heart rate monitor to help keep you in your individual heart rate zone to help you burn more calories and individualize the workout. “Each session is going to use a variety of equipment such as treadmills, rowers, dumbbells and more,” Tempe says. “Getting bored isn’t an option here.”

DIET BY COLOR
(CON TI N U ED)
In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.
Red
For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries
Purple
Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets
Green
Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas
Orange
Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches
White
White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips
Black
Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries
The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Greensleeves Estates subdivision on Billings’ west end. “It has all the bells,” Hedi says, referring to upgrades
throughout the four-bedroom 3 1/2-bathroom property. For starters, there’s state-of-the-art sound and security systems, all LED lighting and beautiful granite countertops in the gourmet kitchen, built-in barbecue area and bathrooms. There’s no “one thing” that distinguishes this home. It’s the sum of all bonuses. Think a bonus room with a hand-painted mural by Cindy Smith of Faux Smith Decorative Painting above the three-car heated garage, bonus garage door at the back of the house offering convenient backyard access and even a landscaped play area for the kids. Because winters in Billings can be brutal, the home's all-weather screened-in porch— complete with gas fireplace–is also worth mentioning. There's another fireplace built into the wall separating the master bedroom and bathroom. This home may have been built by busy people, but it's certainly conducive to quality downtime. TRAINER CONFESSIONS ARTICLE SASKIA BOOGMAN
SECRETS FROM SOME OF BILLINGS' TOP FITNESS EXPERTS
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IT'S LIKE TO WORK IN THE WORLD OF FITNESS? Three Billings trainers sat down with us to shed some light on the fitness industry and share a confession about what it's really like to be a personal trainer.
42
I started my fitness journey at 45, and it took me months of figure out how to do a burpee. I was so frustrated, I cried! But it's part of why I'm a trainer today.
Outside the gym, in a social setting, we don't care that your normal dinner is an entire frozen pizza or debating if squats are better than deadlifts. The only debate I'm really interested in is if I should have seconds on dessert.
If a trainer says, 'two more!' when you're doing a set, they've probably lost count. In seriousness, trainers really care about their clients. My gym is my family. Your success is our success.
