Something to Write Home About
MARCH 2017
T
hey say that home is where the heart is, so it stands to reason that this March, here at Billings Lifestyle, our heart is here with you. There are several different kinds of homes.

There’s the home you grew up in. This is the home that built you—the home that’s seen you through some of your biggest accomplishments and has comforted you through some of your hardest falls. It’s the place where you fought off monsters and built forts to keep them out, the place that’s documented your growth (physically and metaphorically) and the place that proves wrong the notion that you “can’t go home again.” Then there’s your home away from home. Whether it’s the home you made for yourself while away at college, the home you found while building your dreams or the home you made while traveling the world, these homes represent growth during some of life’s most significant moments. Finally, there’s the home you’ve built for your family. This is the home you’ve made your own. The home that combines the comfort and traditions from the above homes, but the home that’s there for you and your family’s future. It comes as no surprise that we’ve dedicated this issue of Billings Lifestyle to a space that’s so important. So whether you’re renovating or remodeling an old home, redecorating or reinvigorating a new space, renewing or developing traditions, or searching for a new home to see you through the next part of your journey, we hope this issue serves all (or at least some) of your home needs.

TY NELSON
CONSTRUCTION INSPIRING MASTER BATHROOM REMODEL ARTICLE MCCOY WORTHINGTON PHOTOGRAPHY MATTHEW STRUCK
T
y Nelson is no stranger to adversity. Spending his early years working out of the back of his pickup, he used a self-
taught technique and a sharp eye for design to build notoriety, moving his business to a garage, then a garage and driveway, and finally, in 2008, a rental space—just in time for one of the most catastrophic global financial crashes in modern history. However, he continued to grow, and when he reflects on those early years, he’s surprisingly upbeat, wearing expres-
sions of triumph. It’s because, for Nelson, who has run Ty Nelson Construction for more than 15 years, there is an art to taking challenges and remolding them into a beautiful product. This very spirit is obvious in one specific recent project: the remodeling of the master bathroom at 2010 Virginia Lane. “The best thing for me is overcoming challenges,” Nelson says. “That’s very satisfying. It’s overcoming the challenges of a remodel and, at the end of the game, it’s the satisfaction of seeing a happy customer.” With a look at the finished product, a bright and elegant, fully remodeled master bathroom, it is difficult to imagine anything but ease and comfort surrounding the project. However, right away, Nelson and his team were able to see a range of difficulties. “When you go in, you have to be able to see through walls and create a vision,” Nelson says.

On this project, Nelson needed to work with an unconventional, and aged, space. Once used as an attic in a home originally built in 1936, the area was missing heat and basic frills, like cabinets. In addition to needing to navigate vaulted, asymmetrical ceilings, he was up against an original bathroom that held a wall-mounted toilet surrounded by obtrusive joists. All of this was compounded by the need to run electrical “fishing” through the walls. Basically, Ty Nelson Construction faced both plumbing and electrical disasters, not to mention the ever-present dilemma of matching old styles with fresh and modern concepts. “You always know there will be problems; you just don’t know where,” Nelson explains. “You have to really think outside the box.” Perhaps above all else, this is where Nelson’s relentless attitude has yielded the most inspiring results. He was able to tap into his experience, a trusted team of experts and creative solutions not only to overcome obstacles but to build a beautiful product. The group managed to fully renovate the space, upgrade utilities and even put a modern spin on antique designs by salvaging old doors, upgrading them and fitting them with classic-style doorknobs. “We figured it out,” Nelson says. “I always tell people there is nothing we can’t do, and I believe it.” The finished product is an elegant blend of class and functionality. With new Pella windows lighting up the now-bright space, the bathroom features stunning gliding tile work. Its solid-surface countertops are accented with the modernity of a chrome-finished faucet and handles. The shower was upgraded with a special diverter valve, allowing access to both a body spray and a rain head. The crew also cut down the original doors, adding antiquestyle doorknobs that fit seamlessly into a contemporary upgraded style. CONTINUED >

In addition to holding a refined but fresh look, this master bathroom features hidden amenities that highlight the subtle brilliance of Nelson’s work. The area includes custom built-in cabinetry with soft-close doors and drawers, accenting its quiet touch. It is also equipped with premium heated floors.

THE PSYCHOLOGY of
COLOR ARTICLE KATIE MEURER

Billings Lifestyle | March 2017
C
olor is used in many different ways all around us. As humans, we see thousands of colors every day—in our clothing, our food, our
vehicles and in our homes just to name a few places. Color is everywhere. The psychology of color is understanding hues of color as a determinant of human behavior. Think about how certain colors affect you. Color psychology is used heavily in marketing strategies and advertising campaigns as well. Color influences perceptions we have that are not as obvious, such as of food. An all-white room may make us feel less cluttered and more relaxed simply because there aren’t as many colors for us to process all of the time. The palette is neutral so that our thoughts and emotions aren’t affected by the natural reactions that we might have to colors. Jeremiah Young, creative director at Kibler & Kirch interior design firm in Billings and Red Lodge, often asks his clients to consider what colors they have in their closet when choosing what colors to use to decorate their homes. His idea is those colors you have chosen most often to wear are what you are naturally drawn to as an individual so that color palette in your home will be most pleasing to you as well. CONTINUED >

REDS In contrasting the views of men and women with color values, Young states he has found women and men feel at ease in a more masculine environment. He also has found the use of the color red in decorating—contrary to its violent reputation—is very well-liked by most people as long as it has a lot of black in it. When you have a deeper, richer red, the color becomes soothing and comforting.

H
elen Keller once said, “Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived.” Certainly, when it comes to great
food, her words hit home. At times, a dish’s smell can have an almost otherworldly effect, sparking emotions, memories and images from afar. For the area’s top local culinary artists, this phenomenon weaves into daily life. For them, the power of smell serves as a swift communicator, a welcome sign and even, as Keller once hinted, a chance to transport customers to other times and places. At Billings’ The Fieldhouse Restaurant, owner and chef Ben Harman spends his days teaching his staff to prepare dishes that light off all of the senses. For Harman, food’s scent can be part of a fuller dining experience.
Lilac's French Onion Soup
“It’s always fun creating an experience for people,” Harman says. “It’s about feeding and sharing with people.” This very personal experience is drawn out through chef Harman’s home life and it influences the dishes he focuses on perfecting in his restaurant. When it comes to uncovering the laid-back comforts of home, he turns to the scent of a local specialty: beef. “Seared beef, to me, is very particular and it hits very close to home for a lot of people,” he says. At The Fieldhouse, Harman takes this classic flavor a step further with his uniquely crafted bison oxtail dish. Working with the essential waft of seared, caramelizing beef, he likes to take his time when braising the meat, allowing flavor to rise out of the depths of bones and muscle. He then adds parsley, thyme, garlic, bay leaf, peppercorns and tomato paste to open up what he considers a magical aromatic quality that lives naturally in herbs. “Fresh herbs are another thing people don’t necessarily know how much they enjoy,” Harman says. “We all love smelling herbs, just like we smell flowers. They have such a natural aromatic quality, and to eat them is just such another element.” Beyond beef, he uses herbs to build an experience when crafting other dishes, especially soups. A food long associated with inviting people in, Harman focuses on creating welcoming aromas when creating soup. He likes to start many of his recipes with a consistent mix: a roasted mirepoix of onions, garlic, shallots and ginger. He sweats vegetables, consolidates flavors and lets the scent build. This aromatic base serves as the cornerstone of the broader experience he feels is essential in dining. “It’s all about developing flavor,” he says. “A lot of really classic food is great because it is well-thought-out and well-conceptualized.”

Lilac's French Onion Soup
Not far from The Fieldhouse, another local culinary expert, Jeremy Engebretson, chef and owner of Lilac Jeremy, is well aware of the influence great smells have on the body. “Aroma is supposedly the strongest sensory trigger we have in our bodies,” Engebretson says. “It’s very conscious in everything that we do.” For Engebretson, the smells of homestyle cooking influence the dishes and messages he tries to create for customers. “Long cooking times, the smell of beef shoulder and this warm, simple homey feeling drives me back all the time,” Engebretson says. “ That nurturing level that we had when we were younger finds its way into what we do.” Like Harman, Engebretson has a special connection with the nostalgic smell of beef. However, he likes to present it in a unique dish that is an unchanging staple on his

After a braising process that takes upward of eight hours, the dish is finished with Italian parmesan and lemon juice. “ There’s nothing that matches that smell of when you have a tough cut of meat like a short rib and it hits that hot oil and starts to sear and braise off,” Engebretson says. “ That is instant youth and warmth and comfort just all wrapped up in a pan.” Both Harman and Engebretson hold a list of favorite food scents. However, regardless of technique or personal preferences, these local experts in cuisine agree there is a pleasant power in the aroma of great food.

inspirations and themes that encapsulate the top looks for this year. These themes work together in a unique blend to create an exclusive feel and collective vibrancy. For 2017, Young’s picks include accenting with brass through furnishings like hooks and cocktail table finishes. He also is keeping his eyes open for opportunities to highlight décor with the rustic feel of nailheads. Next, he loves the incorporation of the themes of custom mosaic tile. Also among his top five themes is the selection and display of well-crafted handmade rugs. Finally, he recommends tying together the look and feel of spaces by featuring original artwork and frames. In this year’s selection, Young has picked art from Stapleton Gallery. View the full Stapleton collec-
tion at StapletonGallery.com.

“I’m never following trends too closely, but our design work right now seems full of great photos and art with interesting frames as well as amazing rugs, custom mosaic tile, liberal use of nail heads and touches of brass. We love the way these things come together to give life to a space. Mixing things up unexpectedly is what we do best!” 34
