Around Town TOILETRY DRIVE The 3rd annual Stand Up for Stand Down toiletry drive for Georgia’s homeless veterans, sponsored by the metro area Pilot International Clubs, Georgia Cancer Specialists and Northside Hospital, will take place through Sept. 5. The drive collects a variety of much-needed toiletry and personal care items to fill “comfort bags” for veterans who attend the Atlanta VA Medical Center’s annual “Stand Down” event in October. “Stand Down” is a military term that refers to the time when troops are brought back from the battlefield for rest and recuperation. The Atlanta VA Stand Down event provides health and other services to help homeless veterans get back on their feet. More than 650 homeless veterans were served at the 2013 event. 5K for GOCA September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance is working hard across the state to highlight the cause, honor those battling the disease and educate women about the risks and symptoms leading to early detection. Two Teal Trot 5k are set at Fort Yargo State Park on September 20 and Alpharetta’s Sanctuary Park on September 27. “Ovarian cancer is an under-recognized threat to women’s health,” says Doug Barron, executive director of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance. “One out of 72 women is affected, and the majority of cases aren’t detected until late stage due to evasive symptoms and a lack of reliable screening tools, making it the deadliest of gynecologic cancers.” GAOvarianCancer.org. 404.255.1337

There remains, however, at least one quintessential, all-American standard style: preppy. Far more than just a fashion trend, preppy is a look and a lifestyle that has lasted for generations. And now, preppy has a home: Atlanta-based online store Country Club Prep. According to the company’s founders and co-owners, Stephen Glasgow and Matt Watson (left), Country Club Prep’s mission in business and in life is to find the best preppy designers out there and to bring them to you under one metaphorical roof— the first and only online store dedicated to preppy fashion. y earliest recollection of North Buckhead is from 1961. My Georgia Tech roommate, also from Florida, could sometimes borrow a car and we’d explore Atlanta. We learned the best ride was north, up Peachtree Road. Turning onto Peachtree Dunwoody Road, we admired the North Buckhead homes with deep yards. As college students we couldn’t imagine ever affording homes like those. Yet a dozen years later I bought my own North Buckhead home. While I still live in that home, many of those deep Peachtree Dunwoody yards I admired are gone, having been subdivided into smaller lots with bigger homes. Subsequent waves of redevelopment created a diverse neighborhood: old houses next to new ones; big houses and little, most carefully maintained. North Buckhead had gotten some character. Then there are North Buckhead’s trees. About a decade ago, Atlanta residents endured Mayor Campbell’s failed experiment of privatizing our municipal water system. As neighborhood association president, I got hundreds of emails about bad service. I became a point man in the campaign to boot the private contractor and restore good (or at least tolerable) service. I even had my picture in the New York Times with a bathtub full of brown water. One magazine 14

reporter who came to Atlanta to interview me was author of a book about forest ecosystems. As we drove around North Buckhead he was amazed we lived inside a forest. Those who visit our many North Buckhead high-rises see another view of that amazing green canopy; little suggests that thousands live below it. Great shopping abounds here, too: upscale Phipps Plaza and smaller malls; Lenox Square and other malls are nearby. Dozens of mostly excellent restaurants, almost two thousand highrise condos, and millions of square feet of office space round out developed, perhaps overdeveloped, southern North Buckhead. From an environmental perspective, it is heartening that the watershed basin for those highly developed areas ultimately funnels through a one-acre pond at North Buckhead’s Blue Heron Nature Preserve, where river otters, turtles, and fish somehow flourish in unlikely proximity to a man-made world. But there are storm clouds on the horizon. Some say the storm is already here. Our beloved elementary school, doubled in size just three years ago, is already at capacity. Cut-through traffic zips through residential areas. Bumper-to-bumper traffic reappears morning, noon and evening. We have transportation strengths: both the Buckhead MARTA Station and GA400’s Buckhead interchange are inside North Buckhead. But traffic from our 9,000 residents plus traffic torrents from the area’s 100,000+ office workers and shoppers swamp our antiquated network of roads. Sure, Lenox Road was extended and GA400 was added, but the overall pattern (no one dares call it a street grid) dates from 85 years ago, the legacy of an agricultural era whose population was a tiny fraction of today’s. Farmers had little need for parks, playgrounds, or sidewalks, explaining our deficit in those amenities. We’ve developed new parks and plan more. Most residents eagerly await PATH400, the five-mile, multi-use trail extending two miles into North Buckhead. Yet even then, most of the neighborhood won’t be within a ten-minute walk of a park, the city’s goal. Tsunamis of growth periodically sweep North Buckhead -- our population grew by 47 percent between the 2000 and 2010 Census counts. Idled by the Great Recession, workers are now building many of the planned 2,500 new apartment units. Add to that another big office tower and hotel. But, too much “improvement” may let comedians quip, “Nobody goes to North Buckhead any more – it’s too crowded.” Our North Buckhead Civic Association (NBCA) finally decided a North Buckhead Master Plan was required. While being the plan’s principal financier, NBCA seeks a consensus plan including views from businesses, renters, and homeowners. With welcome support from the City of Atlanta, NBCA hired a respected planning firm to guide us. Plan topics will include transportation, landuse, parks, neighborhood character, historic resources and government services. In retrospect, we needed a plan years ago – better late than never. Meet Paul Light BHL: What brought you to our community? PL: I was born at Georgia Baptist Hospital in 1966. I grew up on Carter Drive in Brookhaven and then lived in the area just north of there (across from the YMCA soccer fields) until the early 90s. Then I lived in Sandy Springs for many years. My wife and I now live in Peachtree Hills. Before becoming a full-time artist I spent a total of 24 years working in our family business on Piedmont Road in Buckhead. BHL: Describe your art: PL: I am primarily a painter. I usually work in oils but I also enjoy experimenting with different types of paints. I also have made some large (human-size) minimalist metal sculptures painted with automotive paint but I don’t have access to a welding shop at this time. My aesthetic is best described as being connected to 20th century American Abstract Expressionism and Colorfield. Most of my paintings have a very high degree of energy and I alternate between diverse and monochrome color palettes. Conceptually speaking, my art is a reflection of my cumulative life experience and how I remember different elements of it -- not in pictures or narrative but in fleeting feelings and ways in which I cannot describe in words. This isn’t to say that it is positive or negative or that I am working through something using art therapeutically. That’s not it at all. Its simply an expression of my own existence and possibly the universe around us in the way that I relate to it at a basic level. Ultimately it is my intent that others can connect with my 22

BHL: What inspires you? PL: I am inspired by the universes around us, the people I meet, the stories I hear, and the art that I come across all the time. I also get inspired by teaching and collaborating with other artists, particularly those who make different types of art than I do. During those times, especially during teaching, there is a natural dialog about like-minded artists from history, which can be particularly energizing and informative. Another major source of inspiration is my gallery, (Further Polycontemporary) where I show many different types of art, even things that I don’t personally like. Much of it is Graduate Thesis exhibitions and group student shows but I also show the work of established artists. Further is a very polished and traditional gallery space in every sense of the word. My show schedule is, however, quite unconventional. A typical show at Further is only a week long with at least one reception, sometimes more. A typical gallery will leave a show up for months at a time. The idea here is that since people have access to a vast amount of instant-on information that they digest and move on relatively quickly that the gallery should present a schedule that works the same way. It is very difficult during the high season to have a new show every week but it is very rewarding. What shows up in the space is always interesting and the space gets totally recontextualized every time. Since the gallery isn’t pushing a particular aesthetic except a conceptual one wherein the community’s relationship with the arts is enriched, the outcome is always unpredictable which is, quite frankly delightful. Although I genuinely love many types of art I resonate most clearly and completely with the visual language of American Abstract Expressionism. I never get tired of looking at that type of work and am always finding new things in it.

BHL: Where did you study art? PL: I have always made art. Drawing, painting, jewelry design, etc... In my old career I fueled my creative side by doing press ready advertising layout, copy writing and product design. I then got a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2D animation at The Art Institute of Atlanta followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at SCAD Atlanta. BHL: Where can people view your art? PL: People can view my art at Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta and in my studio at TULA (The MOCA / TULA Art Complex) 75 Bennett Street. My gallery is across the hall from my studio. When I have a dry spell in the gallery I put my own paintings up in there. I also have three paintings at Besharet Fine Art in Castleberry. BHL: When is your next show? PL: I have a painting in the exhibition, Suite Works at the Museum of Contemporary Art, GA until September 13. BHL: Tell us about your family here in Atlanta. PL: My parents came to Atlanta in 1961. They are originally from

West Virginia but lived for a few years in Manhattan before relocating to Atlanta. We lost my mom to cancer in 2011. She was also a painter and forever a student of the arts. My dad is retired and lives in Sandy Springs. I live with my wife, Mary Catherine, and our son (Declan 1.5 years old) in an old house in Peachtree Hills. Mary Catherine is a stay-at-home mom for now.

Mental Mastery of Chemotherapy:

A Guide to Meditation and Positive Mental Imagery Written by David R. Nethero Reviewed by Rhiannon Bankes

he three scariest words anyone can hear: You have cancer. When Brookhaven entrepreneur David Nethero heard those words in December of 2012, he made a conscious decision to proactively fight the disease with a plan: a plan that helped him to quit smoking a few years earlier. After receiving the news that he had Stage 3B adenocarcinoma cancer of the colon, David drew on his previous experience and practice of using the power of the mind by incorporating the positive mental imagery that he employed when he quit smoking. A self-professed “ordinary guy” or “layman” when it came to meditation, David worked with Dr. George Pratt on exercising the power of positive mental imagery during his six month journey through chemotherapy. He believes these techniques significantly reduced chemotherapy’s effect on him and allowed him to maintain an active and engaged life with minimal side effects. Today, he is cancer-free. After completing his chemotherapy, David wrote a book to assist others with their chemotherapy experience. Equal parts less-

sons and workbook, Mental Mastery Of Chemotherapy, alternates between short chapters full of advice and pages of questions aimed to guide a patient through their own journey. This book assists by teaching patients how to harness a positive state of mind in order to impact the physical state of being and chapters range from inspirational (Value of Friendships) to realistic (Celebrate the Good Times, Sleep Off the Bad) to honest (Hitting the Wall in Session Nine.) The book also includes a part of David’s personal journal as well as provides a template for patients to use themselves. He felt his journal gave him a sense of control over his reactions and allowed him to share details with his doctor. By breaking his experience into manageable pieces he felt more control and was able to predict many factors such as his nausea and fatigue for each day throughout his cycle. By recording these results he was able to better communicate details to his doctor. He also provides examples of his dialogue with his doctor enabling a patient to prepare themselves for optimum communication.

This book is a great resource for anyone going through the chemotherapy process and the techniques outlined could be referenced for other medical treatments as well. The author has gone on to incorporate these techniques in the boardroom and on the tennis courts. If you or anyone you know is currently battling cancer, Mental Mastery Of Chemotherapy is a great tool to assist on the journey. David, and his wife Susan, have lived in Brookhaven for over four years, and in greater Atlanta for more than 20 years. hen Land Rover announced they were launching a compact luxury crossover SUV version of their prized Range Rover, intrigued minds set the Internet ablaze to get a sneak peek of what was in store. The gorgeous design of the Evoque did not disappoint and neither did the numerous amenities the new 2014 edition provided for a mere $41,100. As expected, the five-door standard version—there is also a three-door trim—left little to be desired thanks to the generous inclusion of a 2.0-liter, 240-horsepower aluminum turbocharged, four-cylindered heart, complete with 9-speed automatic transmission; paddleshifters; seemingly countless braking features (ABS, HDC, DSC, HDS, EBA, TSA, HAS); respectable 24 combined gas mileage; and superior suspension to maintain the luster of Land Rover brand’s magnificent handling and city-to-off-roading capabilities.
