Happy Summer, BuckHaven!

J

ust when I think this job couldn’t get any better, someone comes up with the great idea to do a July feature about the unique and fab summer cocktails being shaken and stirred around BuckHaven. Lucky for me, the wonderfully talented photographer, Dennis Malcolm Byron, was willing to come along for our afternoon of “research,” and help sip and shoot the gorgeous cocktails we chose to introduce to you. Our friends at UBER set us up with cars so we didn’t have to worry about anything except where to find the best lighting. I recommend you, too, get the UBER app and enjoy a safe and carefree summer around town. Check out some of my favorite chill tunes and share yours on our Facebook page. We love to hear from you! Have a great summer,

Trails Away The South Fork Conservancy’s plan to connect Buckhead to Emory University with a trail along the South Fork of Peachtree Creek received a double dose of support from The City of Atlanta’s Urban Design Commission recently. The Conservancy’s Trail Vision Plan was created by BeltLine visionary Ryan Gravel with Perkins+Will in 2012. Working with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Heather Alhadeff steered the trail to design. Neighbors in Lindridge Martin Manor wanted the trail along the creek to compensate for the new overhead ramps. The trail edges the creek and connects Cheshire Bridge Road to Lindbergh Drive along a half mile of soft-surfaced trail. Almost complete, it should open this summer. The Conservancy’s work benefitted from support by MillionMile Greenway and the Kendeda Fund, which provided critical early funding. Check out the trailhead location for Confluence/Cedar Chase Trail at The Cul-de-sac at 2100 Armand Rd. and for Zonolite Park at 1100 Zonolite Place. The South Fork Conservancy is a growing 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to the conservation of Atlanta’s creeks and connecting Atlanta’s communities through a comprehensive network of creekside trails. The largest expansion in the park’s 47-year history, Hurricane Harbor boasts four new water attractions, including the world’s first hybrid zero-gravity slide, spans seven acres and is free with admission to Six Flags Over Georgia. Sisters Annie Griffin Collection’s Fashion Star is on the Rise Article Laura Carson Miller Photography Provided

D

on’t be fooled by the fresh faces and youthful style of the chic young women of Annie Griffin Collection. These two Atlanta sisters have more clout and a better business acumen than fashionistas twice their age. This Buckhead-based clothing brand, headed by sisters (and business partners) Annie Griffin, 30, and Robin Gerber, 26, is growing in its fifth year with bold new lines and national distributors. The members of their small but mighty office staff are all 30 or younger and each brings their own strengths and flare to the team. For many of the women, it’s their first job

post-college and all are quite proud of how they help keep Annie Griffin Collection not only humming, but seriously thriving. Annie, who is the creative side of the endeavor, studied art in college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and after moving to Atlanta worked for an interior designer and attended Savannah College of Art and Design. Sister Robin, manages the sales and marketing arm of Annie Griffin Collection and found herself working at a fashion PR firm in New York City after graduating from the University of Georgia. Soon their combined passion, strengths and experience found Robin back in Atlanta, joining her sister’s growing business. “After starting the business in July 2009, and being on my own the first season, Robin came along at the perfect time. She gave me the confidence and push I needed,” explains Annie. “I was completely out of my league when it came to sales, so having my sister and best friend join my team was the exact thing I needed.” Each collection offers gorgeous colors and patterns, quality fabrics, and cuts and shapes that are timeless and flatter countless figures. Griffin is a highly detail-oriented person and sends out only the finest clothing creations, which keeps boutiques reordering for their excited clients. AGC is available at boutiques nationwide and locally at Poppy’s of Atlanta. When I ask about future goals, the excitement in Griffin’s voice is both evident and filled with gratitude. “I’m really excited about where we have come with our prints,” shares Griffin. “All of our prints are designed in-house and I look forward to see what the future holds for that aspect of the line. We would also love to open a flagship store eventually. In other big news, we are currently producing our first run for Anthropologie! The pieces will be available in June online and in Anthro retail stores across the southeast.” With amazing feedback on their summer 2014 line and Griffin’s son, Jack, turning 2 this fall, she looks forward to continuing her full life one day at a time,

balancing her time with her husband and son and her business. “It’s a really great feeling to see things going so well after what feels like such a long journey,” she says. With both sisters residing in the Buckhead area, Robin in Peachtree Hills and Annie closer to the west side, and having recently moved into their new offices on Miami Circle, Annie Griffin Collection continues to cement its ties to the Buckhead area, and far beyond beyond. Both attend St. Anne’s Church in Buckhead and regularly support the Shepherd Center, Atlanta Children’s Shelter and Dress for Success. The sky is the limit for these talented hometown ladies and we are thrilled to watch their glorious ride.

The Hills Are Alive With the Sound of Music Atlanta Residents Make Up Peachtree String Quartet Article Helen Grebe | Photography Provided

“T

he hills are alive with the sound of music…” Garden Hills Recreation Center, that is. This is because it is one of many performance locations for the sweet sounds of the Peachtree String Quartet (PSQ), a professional fine arts string quartet formed more than two years ago in Buckhead and composed of four Atlanta residents Christopher Pulgram (Director), John Meisner, Yang-Yoon Kim and Jennifer Humphreys. The quartet is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation whose mission is to bring the highest level of chamber music to Atlanta residents. Founded in 2011 by Pulgram, PSQ brings an innovative approach to Atlanta’s chamber music scene: a clear focus on string quartet music. Its musicians, who are all distinguished members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and have performed around the world as soloists and chamber musicians, enjoy performing for all ages of audiences including 9-year-old youth to 93-year-old music fans. Peachtree String Quartet’s first concert occurred in March of 2011 and yielded an audience of about 75. Pulgram, an Atlanta native and graduate of The Westminster Schools, notes that marketing the group was a grass roots project then. “I was out walking my dog with a friend and we stopped by my neighborhood Garden Hills Recreation Center,” Plugram says. “I thought to myself, we should play music here, this is the perfect spot for an intimate performance.” The ball got rolling when Pulgram notified friends and alumni about their first concert performance through email while Pulgram’s mother, also an Atlanta native, helped spread the word by inviting friends. The performance was a success and set the stage for future endeavors. “We’re lucky that attendance just keeps increasing with each performance,” notes Pulgram. “Our performances have grown to between 110 and 120 attendees today.” Peachtree String Quartet, which has a three-season performance window (the musicians separate in summer to perform in various parts of the world), have performed at many venues around the city which include Peachtree Presbyterian’s Chapel, various synagogues, Duluth 16 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2014

United Methodist Church, Eddie’s Attic and the Veteran’s Hospital for Disabled Veterans. Concerts, which cost $20 per adult and $10 for students/ youth, are accessible thanks to the generous support of PSQ’s sponsors like PH Wine Merchant in Garden Hills. Pulgram is enthusiastic in thanking PSQ’s supporters because they help create an experience. “PH Wine Merchant provides wine to enjoy after each concert,” says Pulgram. “Audience members gather with the musicians and enjoy a glass of wine, ask us questions. People enjoy talking to us after the concert is over. It’s an intimate experience and we love providing this personal feeling to our audience.” Musicians and audience alike often head to Anis Café & Bistro (also a PSQ supporter) apres concert to socialize and dine. Most of PSQ’s sponsorship comes from individuals and Pulgram notes that they are grateful to all those people who make their concerts possible. Like the music that PSQ plays, the overall symphony that PSQ creates, composed of individual notes like a personal experience for the audience, involved local support and beautiful chamber music performed in an intimate space- keep Peachtree String Quartet growing and thriving. Indeed, Atlanta is alive with the sound of music--string quartet music! The song promises to play on as Pulgram emphasizes, “We hope audience members leave our performances enriched, sharing in our love for the string quartet repertoire, which is the single greatest genre of classical music. If we can convey and share the fantastic emotion that exists in this music, we feel fulfilled.” For more information, visit PeachtreeStringQuartet.org

Quenching the Summer Thirst Our Picks for BuckHaven’s Freshest Cocktails Article Sue G. Collins | Photography Dennis Malcolm Byron

hat makes the perfect summer cocktail? Lots and lots of ice, of course. But also, there’s a hint of something seasonally fresh, a sprig of summer shaken or stirred and a hint of zest. Or, is that tequila? Well, taste these for yourself at one of our favorite neighborhood watering holes and let us know what you think. ka, St-Germain Elderflower Liquor, fresh lime juice, and elderflower syrup. Served up, the drink is plenty cold and refreshing without all the ice to dilute its strength. Morning Glory, meanwhile, is a more savory answer for all you cocktail-lovers who want to sip something less sweet but nonetheless delicious. Made with St. George Gin, St-Germain Elderflower Liquor, English cucumber puree, and fresh lime juice, Morning Glory has an earthy, flowery bite to it that just begs for the outdoors. Have a seat

What Melinda enjoys most about bartending is the unique interactions with guests, and the many roles she gets to play within the one role. According to Melinda, beyond the traditional responsibilities of bartending, on any given day she can be “a problem solver, an advisor, a friend, a food critic, a concierge, an accountant, a coach, a performer or a wizard.” 20 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2014

In some ancient cultures, salt was a rare commodity that was given to guests as a sign of hospitality and friendship; eating salt under someone’s roof created a bond of obligation between a guest and host. These traits have become the core ingredients for Saltyard’s philosophy. They are obliged to make this human connection between what is on the plate and in the glass, and the long-standing relationship with friends, farms, artisanal purveyors, and our Atlanta neighbors. They are excited to bring Atlanta a true social house where guests come for dinner but stay for the spirited and engaging atmosphere. be safe, buckhaven Consider hiring a car and driver when you explore the area’s many patio bars. We like Uber. Following its arrival in Atlanta in August of 2012, Uber has changed the way people move around the city. With the tap of a button on your smart phone, the Uber app connects you with safe and reliable drivers. The driver’s name and car details appear in the app, so you know exactly who is picking you up. Once you arrive at your destination, your fare is automatically charged to your credit card on file.

es, school’s out. Yes, it is summer. Yes, you are invariably going to be at the receiving end of ‘I’m bored’ chiming at you all day. Fear not! Here is a roundup of just the right bunch of fun activities for your restless young ones. For the green-thumbed: Trees Atlanta has an exciting new summer camp for Atlanta high school students! The inaugural Junior TreeKeepers Program offers five days of interactive and handson activities in environmental science. Children will explore 200-year-old forests, learn about GPS orienteering, participate in nature projects, and have fun with scavenger hunts and biking. Field trips to local attractions such as the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum and Stone Mountain are included. A summertime extension of Trees Atlanta’s popular youth environmental education program, offered for free to more than 20 schools in the metro Atlanta area, Junior TreeKeepers educates children about Atlanta’s urban forests, pollinator insects, community connections and environmental stewardship. If you’re looking to get the kids out of the house and out exploring this summer, register them for Junior TreeKeepers with TreesAtlanta.org

1956 Buick Centurion

1959 Cadillac Cyclone For the creatively-inclined: The High Museum’s latest exhibit “Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas” is for both the design devils and the car crazies. Inventive, historic concept cars are on display including some of the rarest, most imaginative designs by Ferrari, Bugatti, General Motors and Porsche. Bringing together 17 concept cars from across Europe and the U.S. from the early 1930s to the 21st century, the exhibit pairs conceptual drawings, patents and scale models with realized cars, demonstrating how their experimental designs advanced ideas of progress and changed the automobile from an object of function to a symbol of future possibilities. Highlights include the electric bubble car, Scarab, the genesis of the contemporary minivan, and the BMW “GINA Light Visionary Model” featuring an exterior made of fabric, among others. Visit High.org for details.

For the adventure-mongers: Georgia State Parks offer a pleth-

ora of options. Archery ranges abound at Elijah Clark, Panola Mountain, and Victoria Bryant State Parks. While there is a small fee to use most archery ranges, Tallulah Gorge has a range available free of charge and you can bring your own equipment or rent from park offices. You can also saddle up and indulge in some equestrian activities at several Georgia state parks including Cloudland Canyon which has new riding trails. Most parks also provide equestrian campsites, horse stalls and riding rings, and equestrian adventures for every level. Also, have you considered Geocaching? Using just your smart phone and a GPS app, search dozens of state parks and historic site locations to discover hidden containers or caches. In other words, a modern day treasure hunt, and you can join the “GeoCampers” for such events at Red Top Mountain State Park. GAStateParks.org

Hot Summer Looks for a Cool Girl Article Sue G. Collins

T

his summer makeup trends are bolder and sexier than ever evoking visions of petal pink gloss, rosy cheeks and shimmery eyes and are surprisingly easy to pull off for the not-so-savvy makeup lover. Our friends at Julian’s Cosmetics & Skincare at Town Brookhaven hooked us up with these fab tips for looking cool and fresh during this hot BuckHaven month. Julian Reynolds is a renowned makeup artist who designed his new shop to bring us all our favorite beauty services big names in cosmetics at can-do prices. Orange lips

Summer is the season for sunshine and flowers. It is the burst of the fresh orange lips! Orange is the new red. The bold orange lip was seen in print and on the runways all over the world this season. You can get the look at home with the MAC Orange lipstick, Ellis Faas Hot lips L402 or Gorgeous Cosmetics Quinn lip stick. Bright colors blue and green on the lids

Bright color on the lids is another popular trend this season. These fluorescent colors yellow, green, orange, pink and blue gives a pop of color to the face. This look should be a little messy with the colors blending in to each other. To take this look to the next level you can add a color liner for more drama. 24 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2014

White shadow

White shadow around the eyes maybe a little adventurous for the au natural girl but for some that loves colors this is great. You can get this look at home with Youngblood mineral eye shadow in Moonstone. Apply this all over from lash to brow and lower lash line to add depth to this look you can add corner or crease color. Au Naturale

This clean face no makeup look was seen on the runways in show like Jean Paul Gualtier and Proenza Schouler this spring. You can get this look in a few simple steps. Start with clean moisturized skin, use a primer to prep the skin followed with a under eye concealer dab a pinch of the concealer as needed to cover blemishes or reduce redness on the face. Add light bronzer or natural tone blush for warmth. Tight line the eye, add one coat of mascara and shine free lip balm to complete this look.

A Mean, Green Fighting Fit Lawn Article Sue G. Collins

rowing up in Michigan, on a two acre lawn of flat Kentucky Bluegrass, I learned to drive our Sears Craftsman mower before I could ride a bike. I’m afraid our landscaping routine didn’t include much more than three hours of mowing and dumping bag after bag of cuttings into the adjoining empty field. Had we known about what the kind folks at NG Turf call Grasscycling, I am sure our lawn would have been healthier and more lush than the Jones’ next door! Lucky for you, we are sharing these mowing tips, just in time for your summer of fun. Q: Should I bag my clippings or leave them on the lawn after mowing? Grasscycling is the natural recycling of grass clippings by leaving them on the lawn after mowing. It saves time, effort and, when done properly, is good for the environment and health of the grass. According to one study, the time can be reduced by 35 minutes for each mowing. Grasscycling aids soil fertility because clippings rapidly decompose, returning nitrogen and other valuable nutrients to the soil. Q: Define “Proper Mowing.” Proper mowing is the key to successful grasscycling. All mowers can be “grasscyclers,” and no special equipment is needed. However,

some manufacturers sell mower attachments that chop clippings into finer pieces and can improve a mower’s grasscycling performance. Proper mowing means: • Cutting the grass at the recommended height • Maintaining a sharp mower blade • Mowing when the grass is dry • Mowing often enough to remove no more than one-third of the plant height Q: Do clippings lead to thatch? It has been a commonly held belief that grass clippings were a major cause of thatch, and that removing clippings would slow thatch development. Research has determined that thatch buildup is caused by grass stems, shoots and roots – not clippings. Q: When do I fertilize my lawn this summer? A fertilization program should be based on lawn needs, maintenance practices and desired appearance and the turf variety will determine your specific “fertility schedule.”

Road Trip

Saint Simons Island:

Living it up at the King and Prince Article and Photography Ruksana Hussain

I

n just a few hours drive from Atlanta you will land on the island of Saint Simons – one of many that form the Golden Isles along the Georgian coast. Along a semi-secluded stretch of the shoreline is nestled the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort – Saint Simons’ crowning glory and a member of the Historical Hotels of America, one of only six properties in the state. The island offers an enticing mix of natural beauty, rich history, quaint charm and fair weather all year round but the resort holds its own appeal, offering a 24/7 view of and private access to the beach, crowned by a sea-side pool. Early morning walks on the beach are no more a dream. Better yet, choose one of the oceanfront rooms for your stay and you can hear the sound of the waves all day and night. Built in 1935, the resort operated as a

28 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2014

naval training facility and radar station during World War II. Previously a popular dance club, it was restored to its original glamour and remodeled as a luxury resort. Several stained glass windows around the resort speak volumes of the historic events witnessed at this venue. Make sure you see all nine. The King and Prince is also just minutes away from sight-seeing near the village pier’s Lighthouse Museum and Christ Church Frederica. Hit up a nighttime ghost tour with Lighthouse Trolleys or a historic Colonial Island trolley tour to learn more about this magical place. Fishing is welcome and encouraged on the island, too. You can opt for Credle’s Adventures dolphin tour or sail out on a shrimping trip aboard the Lady Jane. Staying active is easy. Bikes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards can be rented from local outfitters. Golf on your mind? Then you’ve come to one of Georgia’s finest at the King and Prince. Luxuriously designed amidst ancient oaks and vast salt marshes, it is one of the hottest golfing destinations in the nation. Of course, a coastal location guarantees fresh coastal cuisine and there are options aplenty to keep your appetite at bay. ECHO is the resort’s newly remodeled oceanfront restaurant. An open kitchen offers up a fresh, contemporary take on an easy-going vibe

that only island-time can offer. Grab a meal under the stars on the patio adjacent to the pool and almost on the ocean itself at peak tide times. With broad, sweeping views of the ocean, ECHO offers a delectable menu be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. Chef James Flack believes in keeping it local and nurturing long relationships with purveyors so be it the quail or the steak, shrimp and grits or desserts, rest assured chef knows where it was sourced and has added his special spin to the preparation and presentation. Personal lunch favorites were the scallops with crispy poached egg and the black grouper sandwich with peach barbecue sauce. Sugar lovers, be sure to have the peach melba crumble and s’mores bomb. If you decide to dine out on the town, Chef Dave Snyder has you covered with his sister restaurants Halyards and Tramici. Halyards offers a higher-end experience with a casual and lounge ambience that adds to the fine-dining mood. Start with the fresh and crunchy Asian influenced tuna tartar or veal/beef minced smooth meatloaf bites. Entrees on the menu include such offerings as fish tacos, beef and cashew stir fry, coconut red curry risotto and more. And everything here is made from scratch. Tramici, on the other hand, plays more to the role of neighborhood hangout, with an indoor and outdoor courtyard-style seating space, and Italian fare that’s flavorful and fragrant, simple and appetizing. It shouldn’t take much more convincing than that for you to drive out on your own Saint Simons adventure or for a relaxing family vacation at the King and Prince. No matter the event, a large conference or an intimate wedding, an annual family reunion or a girlfriend’s getaway, the resort affords scenic views and superior accommodations to make your trip truly memorable.

Parting Thoughts

A Summer State of Mind words Ben Hammett Walkuski

M

y summers as a child were so wild and free that the realities of adulthood hit me like a belly flop in the shallow end. The only child of divorced parents, each year I would return to my native Ohio from nearby Indiana to spend summers with my father. Because this was the most time he and I had together the entire year, my dad made sure that every moment was fun-filled and memorable. Weekdays I attended a nearby summer day camp, which offered specialized programming based on your areas of interest: sports, art, travel, etc. Evenings and weekends brought with them cook-outs on the deck, outings to the nearby swimming pool and miniature golf course, baseball games, bike rides, hikes in the woods, weekend trips to Lake Erie, and helping tend to the lawn and gardens of my father’s sprawling, three-acre property. Because these three months of the year were essentially spent away from home, my summers truly were a vacation. Basking in the warmth of the summer sun, enjoying long days and cool nights free from responsibilities, spoiled by family who relished this precious time together, I never had it so good. So good, in fact, that I spend each of my summers as an adult either dreaming of an experience like my childhood or attempting to recreate it. After nearly

34 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2014

three years here in Atlanta, I’ve discovered this is a place where the summer vacation isn’t just a dream, but an achievable reality. Atlanta is a city made for summer. Atlanta’s weather makes most of the year feel like summer, so from April through October I can enjoy the same kind of outdoor fun that was previously limited to only three months. Atlanta’s location puts me in such close proximity to the beach that I can wake up on Saturday morning, decide I want my toes in the sand, and by 1:00 that afternoon I’ve got a cocktail in my hand and an ocean or a gulf in my sights. Atlanta’s natural beauty makes me feel like I’ve got the biggest lawn on the block, which I don’t have to mow. Whether I’m relaxing under a tree at Lullwater Park, swimming in the Piedmont Park pool, or taking a leisurely stroll along the Beltline, Atlanta is blessed with beautiful and abundant greenspace. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, the diversity of Atlanta’s artistic, athletic, cultural, culinary, historical, and recreational activities can keep your mind, body, and spirit engaged on all of summer’s long, warm days and (almost) cool nights. For me, summer is no longer just a three-month vacation—it’s a year-round state of mind. And it can be yours, too.
