LIFESTYLE LETTER
Fall Style is in the Air The arrival of Fall always feels like a fresh start. There’s excitement in the air as temperatures get crisp and cool, the leaves change, routines return, and with them comes the perfect opportunity to reimagine our personal style. To celebrate this new season, we dedicate our September issue to style for your home. Our cover showcases a unique ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) design by local home remodeler/builder Total Home Solutions. With the skyrocketing demand for ADU’s in Bend, owner Ryan Freitas opens the doors to this unique ADU design, to show us the possibilities for designing a small space that doesn’t feel small. The following pages also highlight “the new rules” in modern home style trends, to inspire you to get creative in making design updates to your home. We also introduce you to author and Enneagram teacher Elizabeth Orr, who helps us understand how our individual personality type plays a role in how we each move through the world. Style isn’t always about how we decorate our home or how we dress, it’s also about how we face challenges and interact in our relationships. And to welcome the arrival of fall, we’ve included tips for styling an autumn dinner party with some recipes to try that are ideal for the season. We hope you enjoy this issue. This magazine would not be possible without the support of our advertising partners. When you visit these local businesses, please tell them you saw their ad here, on the pages of Bend Lifestyle. B E F O R E YO U H EAD OVE R THE MOUNTA INS,
Look Around the Bend.
ver the past 80 years, Central Oregon has transformed. What was once a small mountain community has become one of the West’s most desirable places to live, work, and raise a family. Along the way, something equally remarkable happened. Healthcare transformed, too. For years, many of us assumed advanced medical care meant heading over the mountains to Portland. Today, that assumption warrants reconsideration. Because while Bend has grown into a destination for outdoor recreation, it has also quietly become a destination for advanced healthcare. That didn’t happen overnight. Innovation, collaboration and “state-of-the art” isn’t something you buy. It’s something you build. It takes decades of investment. It takes physicians willing to bring new techniques to the community. It takes partnerships with hospitals, referring providers, and healthcare leaders who believe patients deserve the very best—without leaving home. For nearly 80 years, Central Oregon Radiology Associates has been part of building that future.
Today, CORA offers many of the same advanced imaging services and minimally invasive procedures that patients once assumed required a trip to Portland or another urban location. Their expertise is paired with leading-edge technology—including advanced MRI, PET imaging, breast imaging, CT, and ultrasound—to provide patients with sophisticated diagnostics and treatment options close to home. That commitment to clinical excellence is further reflected in nationally recognized American College of Radiology (ACR) designations, including CORA’s Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center designation and ACR Prostate Cancer MRI Center Designation. These recognitions underscore CORA’s ongoing investment in advanced technology, physician expertise, and the highest standards of patient care—bringing nationally recognized imaging excellence to Central Oregon. Through Vascular and Interventional Services, CORA physicians can diagnose and treat a growing number of conditions through tiny incisions and cutting-edge techniques. These advanced techniques are performed by fellowship-trained

physicians whose expertise has been developed through years of specialized training and supported by state-of-the-art equipment. That’s what decades of dedication and service to the central Oregon community have made possible. Patients who once expected to leave town for specialized imaging or advanced procedures can now receive that care in Bend. Referring providers have local access to advanced diagnostics and specialized expertise. Families spend less time on the road and more time focused on what matters most—getting well. Healthcare in Central Oregon looks very different than it did even a generation ago.
CORA
CMI
Today, CORA serves patients through locations across Bend, Redmond, Madras, Prineville, and La Pine, making advanced imaging and specialized procedures more accessible throughout the region. Perhaps the biggest change over the past 80 years isn’t just how much medicine has advanced. It’s how close that advanced care is to home. Before you head over the mountains, take another look around the Bend.

CREATE MORE LIVING SPACE IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

SMALL DWELLINGS
Accessory Dwelling Unit, or ADU, built by Total Home Solutions in Bend. Photo credit: Ross Chandler Photography
OFFER BIG BENEFITS Ever since Bend changed its zoning laws in 2019 to allow the building of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on personal properties, the demand for them has skyrocketed. These self-contained living spaces are usually found in backyards as separate edifices, but ADUs can also be constructed in garages, on top of garages or as additions to homes. They are often designed to match the style of the existing home, so they blend in seamlessly. CONTINUED >

Of course, it’s important that the contractor constructing the ADU be familiar with all local zoning laws. For example, Bend has recently approved the construction of two ADUs per site, with the first being a maximum of 800 feet and the second being a maximum of 500 feet. While the majority of these units are used as rental properties, others may be designated for visiting family and friends, multigenerational living, or simply as an extra space for families to hang out, work, or enjoy hobbies. Ryan Freitas, owner and founder of Total Home Solutions in Bend, not only builds ADUs, but also has one on his personal property. With his team of skilled tradespeople and subcontractors, along with talented local architects, Freitas says this ADU was built as a kind of showpiece to give people an idea of what they can do. “It’s pretty extreme, and the finishes are fabulous.”

"LIGHT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMP OR TA N T T HING S IN A N A DU BUILD BECAUSE IT HELPS IT FEEL L A R G E R T H A N I T I S ." — R YA N F R E I T A S , T O T A L H O M E S O L U T I O N S OWNER/FOUNDER Completed in 2022, the unit features multiple large windows to let in plenty of natural light. “Light is one of the most important things in an ADU build because it helps it feel larger than it is,” explains Freitas. “Plus, in Central Oregon, we have a lot of beautiful things to look at.” Inside, there’s lovely custom cabinetry with one-of-a-kind custom concrete countertops. “Our concrete contractor Coalesce Concrete used locally sourced obsidian flakes to cast into the mix, which was a first of its kind and was a way to really tap into local resources!” One of his masons created a custom brick wall, while a drywaller did all Venetian plaster finishes throughout the house. In addition to a kitchen and living area, the modern structure includes one bedroom and one bathroom, which is the most common floorplan, plus a rooftop deck with a fire pit,

and a garage below. “The majority of the ones we build have a garage because the garage does not count in the square footage since it’s not livable space,” Freitas states. This ADU is a real statement piece and looks much bigger than 800 feet. “When you design it correctly, it doesn’t feel small,” he emphasizes. “One of the main points of designing an ADU is designing with intention and really knowing how to design a smaller space, so it does not feel small. The minute it does, means there’s a design flaw.” To avoid any flaws, Freitas and his team meticulously plan every step along the way. “We can do the whole process from start to finish because how many people who buy a home would even know how to start building an ADU? Between meeting with an architect, meeting with an engineer, figuring out your design, and then, once that’s figured out, submitting to the city, all of that is so much work up front. And, if you don’t do that work right, the rest of the project doesn’t flow. So, it’s very important to get that pre-construction part correct, and you can only do that with experience.”

These units are quick to rent out and can provide a great way to supplement college tuition, a retirement fund, or a mortgage payment. “Trying to buy a house today is just overwhelming, and the ADU makes it more manageable because you have that instant income.” Another reason for their popularity, he says, is that Bend is densely populated and running out of room for housing. In addition, because ADUs are smaller, they’re more affordable to rent. “Bend’s gotten to such a price point that it’s becoming tough for folks to live here, and so we needed to find a happy medium on housing costs,” Freitas states. “One of those happy mediums is an ADU. It may be a smaller dwelling, but the ones we build are beautiful, laid out correctly, and extremely livable. You may be giving up some space, but do you really need it? Everyone says Bend is our backyard.” Now celebrating its 10-year anniversary, Total Home Solutions is part of this flourishing Bend backyard. It has grown from a one-man operation into a 15-employee business supported by a network of highly experienced, skilled tradespeople who have helped it evolve greatly over the years. In addition to ADU design and construction, the company specializes in kitchen, bath and whole home remodels. “We branched out from remodeling to a steel fabrication department,” Freitas remarks. “We have a crew that does nothing

but high-end appliance installation who are known throughout the community as the ‘white glove guys’. We built this company on the right principles—integrity and honesty.” His goal is, and always has been, for Total Home Solutions to become a household name in Bend. “We’re not looking for a customer one time; we want a customer for life, because things always come up around the house. And, it’s great to know there is a contractor you can always rely on.” A true entrepreneur, Freitas also founded another company three years ago called Ember Saunas, which offers handcrafted cedar barrel saunas. It all started when a friend of his requested one as a gift for his 50th birthday. When people saw it, they wanted one too. As of June, the company has sold over 93 of these handcrafted saunas. Today, their new 11,000 square foot facility in Bend encompasses the remodeling business, design, custom metal fabrication and sauna construction under one roof. Both businesses focus on providing durable products created with high-quality, experienced craftsmanship that can be enjoyed for many years to come. Total Home Solutions is committed to building new, long-lasting relationships with their clients, bringing dreams and visions to life in the community they call home. From a Welcoming Grazing Table to Comfort Food Recipes, Here’s Everything You Need for a Beautifully Styled Fall Dinner Party
STYLED TO GATHER
ARTICLE BY JULIE E. FURNAS
As September brings vibrant colors and cooling air over Central Oregon, it’s time once again to plan fall gatherings with friends and family to celebrate the beauty of Autumn. Early fall dinner parties are a great way to bring people together during a season when warm and comforting flavors are welcomed. Whether it’s gathering indoors around a football game or outdoors by a roaring fire, fall is a time to share hearty soups, slow cooked recipes, roasted vegetables and homemade baked goods. To set the theme for an Autumn dinner party, decorative leaves, pumpkins and candlelight create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that encourages relaxation and conversation. An evening with appetizers, a thoughtfully prepared dinner and desserts is a perfect way to kick off the season and create lasting memories. To start off the event, dazzle your guests with a delicious grazing table, a great way to gather around a bountiful blend of charcuterie, veggies, fruits and seasonal treats. For the main course, baked salmon or roasted pork chops with an apple chutney glaze, accompanied with mushroom risotto and seasonal roasted vegetables is a perfect Autumn main course. Don’t forget to finish off the fall meal with an Oregon berry cobbler or pie. Central Oregon dinners always pair well with local wines from Willamette Valley or beers from one of our many local breweries.

SUCCULENT PORK CHOPS WITH APPLE CHUTNEY INGREDIENTS: • 2 bone-in rib pork chops, 1- 1.5 inches thick (or bone-in or boneless pork loin chops) • 2 teaspoons canola or vegetable oil for pan frying • ½ teaspoon each, kosher salt and ground coriander • ¼ teaspoon each, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder

BEYOND Personality
ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CONFER
TYPES Style isn’t always about what someone chooses to wear or how they decorate their home. Sometimes it’s the way they move through the world. It’s the way one person dives headfirst into conflict while another avoids it at all costs. It’s the instinct to protect oneself or the impulse to care for everyone else first. It’s the frustration that bubbles up when someone loads the dishwasher “wrong,” or the assumptions people make about one another before understanding what each person is carrying. Ultimately, it’s the stories people tell themselves—and the stories they tell about everyone else. Elizabeth Orr has spent years exploring those stories—not because she’s fascinated by personality tests, but because she is fascinated by people. Through humor, storytelling and the Enneagram, the author of The Unfiltered Enneagram, Wake Forest University coach, speaker and creator of the popular Instagram account Rude Ass Enneagram invites people to better understand themselves—and one another. HUMOR, HONESTY AND THE ENNEAGRAM HELP ELIZABETH ORR UNLOCK DEEPER SELF -AWARENESS AND CONNECTION
26
I NSP IR E D BY | ARTS + C U LT U RE
Orr laughs often. She isn’t afraid to poke fun at herself—or everyone else. That may seem surprising coming from someone who teaches what many consider a deeply transformative tool for personal growth. But, she believes humor is part of the process. “We tend to take ourselves too seriously,” Orr remarks. “The Enneagram has a lot of capacity for transformation and self-awareness, but there’s also humor in it. It kind of roasts us.” Orr’s own journey with the Enneagram began shortly after college while living and working in an intentional community. “Our executive director joked that working and living together with the same people was a really good recipe for disaster,” Orr laughs. “They brought in an Enneagram teacher to help us all better understand ourselves and our relationships with each other.” Years later, while working in chaplaincy at Wake Forest University, she found herself introducing students to the same framework. “It was a really helpful tool for me when I was their age,” she notes. In 2018, Orr launched her Instagram account Rude Ass Enneagram. Her honest—and often hilarious—takes on the nine personality types went viral, resonating with followers because they are funny, relatable and, perhaps most importantly, true. Beneath the sarcasm is a deeper invitation: to look at ourselves with curiosity instead of judgment. More than 100,000 followers led to professional training, speaking invitations and, in 2024, the publication of The Unfiltered Enneagram, A Witty and Wise Guide to Self-Compassion. “It was meant to be lighthearted,” Orr explains, “but also helpful as a practical guide to self-compassion.” “It’s a tool, first and foremost,” Orr says. “A tool to support our development around self-awareness, self-compassion and then compassion and understanding for other people.” More Than a Personality Test Many people dismiss the Enneagram as another personality quiz. Orr understands why. “I think people can engage at any level,” she remarks. “It can be quite deep and quite transformational, and it can also be a hoot and a half.” Unlike many personality assessments, the Enneagram asks a different question—not what people do, but why they do it. It identifies nine core personality archetypes, each with its own motivations, fears and patterns of
behavior. Knowing your type isn’t about putting yourself into a box, Orr says. It’s about understanding what happens when life pushes your buttons. “What am I protecting myself from?” she asks. “What am I afraid will happen if I don’t get my way?” Asking and understanding responses to these types of questions can completely change how someone approaches conflict, work, friendships and marriage. When people begin paying attention to questions like this, Orr says, they often discover something unexpected. “The little stuff on the surface actually has deep roots into who we are.” The Pause That Changes Everything Orr describes the Enneagram as a “zoomed-out view” of how we see the world. Each of the nine Enneagram types carries its own assumptions, fears and protective strategies. No perspective is entirely right—or entirely wrong. “We all have limited perspective,” Orr explains. “It’s not the whole reality of how the world is.” Understanding that changes relationships. The argument over how to load the dishwasher suddenly isn’t about dishes. The disagreement in a staff meeting isn’t simply about ideas. Conflict becomes an opportunity to understand what each person is protecting. “It helps us take responsibility for our part of the conflicts,” Orr remarks. “It helps us find paths forward when we’re in conflict with people we care about.” Growing Into Ourselves Growth, Orr believes, isn’t about becoming someone else. It isn’t even about changing personalities. Instead, it’s about becoming less controlled by automatic reactions and more aware of the habits built over a lifetime. “I know my defense mechanism,” Orr reflects of her own Type Eight Enneagram personality. “When I start denying that I need help or denying that I need a break, I can slow down and ask, ‘Is that fear actually true, or am I blowing it out of proportion?’” That pause creates a choice. Instead of living on autopilot, Orr says, “I can choose something different.” As a Type Eight, Orr says she naturally enjoys making a bold impression—a tendency reflected in her love of bright colors, sparkles and a collection of tattoos. But understanding those tendencies has also taught her that she doesn’t have to respond the same way in every situation. “What’s really cool,” she explains, “is me as an Eight who loves to make a big splash. If I need to ground myself, or if

I’m walking into an environment where stirring the pot isn’t going to be helpful, leaning on how a Nine shows up can be a really powerful way to get out of my own box.” As we mature, Orr says, we become less controlled by our fears and more aware of the habits we’ve spent a lifetime building. “I’ve journeyed with the Enneagram since I was twenty-two,” she notes.’ At every stage of my life, it has something new to push me, teach me and invite me into. It’s the little habits that we cultivate day by day that actually move the bigger needle.” The goal isn’t perfection. It’s paying attention. This October, in partnership with Clear Mourning, Elizabeth Orr will bring her approachable, humor-filled style of Enneagram teaching to Bend for a three-day event. The collaboration grew from Orr’s appearance on the podcast Enduring Grief hosted by Sarah Peterson, founder of Clear Mourning, where the two discovered a shared commitment to helping people better understand themselves, strengthen relationships and navigate life’s challenges with greater compassion. Local non-profit Clear Mourning’s mission is to shift the culture surrounding grief. The weekend includes limited private individual and couples sessions, a VIP Dinner & Fundraiser hosted by Shanan Kelley featuring a private chef-prepared meal and conversation with Orr, and a live workshop, The Stories We Live: Understanding Yourself. Transforming Your Relationships. For Orr, it’s the perfect fit. “We’re big enough to hold grief and suffering,” she notes, “and also levity and outrageous silliness.” For Orr, they are companions rather than opposites. In the end, that’s the gift Orr hopes people discover. Not another personality label. Not another self-help formula. Just an invitation to pause, become curious and remember that every person—including ourselves—is moving through the world carrying a story we may not yet understand. “Above all,” Orr says, “have fun with it and don’t take yourself too seriously.”

NINE WAYS OF MOVING THROUGH THE WORLD By Elizabeth Orr, Enneagram Teacher and Author
The Enneagram begins with three centers of intelligence—the Head (thinking), Heart (feeling) and Body (instinct). While everyone uses all three, one tends to lead. From these three centers emerge the nine personality types below. BODY (GUT) CENTER Types 8, 9 & 1 Type Eight – The Challenger Known for big opinions and an even bigger disregard for social niceties, Eights are bold, protective and rarely back down from a challenge. At their best, they inspire courage and remind others of their own strength and integrity. At their worst, they can intimidate or stir up conflict just because they can. For an Eight, life is a full-contact sport—so grab a mouthguard and stand up for what you believe.
Type Three – The Performer Adaptable, ambitious and endlessly capable, Threes are masters at reading a room and rising to the occasion. They often build impressive resumes, yet still wrestle with imposter syndrome because their worth is tied to achievement and external validation. Beneath the polished exterior is someone longing to believe they are enough—even when they’re not accomplishing something. Type Four – The Individualist Emotionally honest and deeply creative, Fours aren’t afraid to sit with grief or help others find meaning in suffering. Yet they often carry a lingering sense that something is missing within themselves. That longing fuels both their creativity and their tendency to romanticize what they don’t have, always searching for the missing piece that will finally make them feel complete.
Type Nine – The Peacemaker Diplomatic and thoughtful, Nines have a gift for making others feel valued. They calm tensions, bridge divides and often become the steady presence everyone needs. But avoiding conflict can come at a cost. Rather than expressing anger directly, Nines may quietly withdraw—if one disappears for six months, chances are they’re upset. Their greatest strength is reminding the rest of us that peace is built through connection, not avoidance.
HEAD CENTER Types 5, 6 & 7 Type Five – The Investigator Quiet observers with endlessly curious minds, Fives often appear calm on the surface while their thoughts race underneath. They value knowledge, independence and privacy, fearing that life’s demands will drain their limited energy. Though they may seem reserved, Fives possess rich inner worlds and remarkable insight when they feel safe enough to share it.
Type One – The Perfectionist Principled, dependable and driven by a deep desire to make the world better, Ones hold themselves—and everyone else—to exceptionally high standards. At their best, they are hopeful reformers who believe a more just world is possible. At their worst, they become their own harshest critics, endlessly replaying mistakes and chasing an impossible ideal of perfection.
Type Six – The Loyal Skeptic Slow to trust but fiercely loyal once they do, Sixes are natural troubleshooters who prepare for every possible scenario. Their minds are always scanning for risks, yet they’re also the people everyone wants nearby during a crisis. While they often underestimate themselves, their courage, loyalty and readiness make them steadfast friends and advocates.
HEART CENTER Types 2, 3 & 4 Type Two – The Giver Warm, generous and quick to care for others, Twos happily offer the shirt off their back. But their generosity can come with hidden expectations, especially when they neglect their own needs while keeping a quiet scorecard of everything they’ve done for others. At their healthiest, Twos love freely and help people feel deeply seen. Healthy boundaries help keep that generosity joyful instead of exhausting.
Type Seven – The Adventurist Curious, optimistic and always chasing the next adventure, Sevens collect experiences the way others collect souvenirs. They thrive on possibility, generating exciting ideas faster than they can pursue them all. Their challenge isn’t dreaming big—it’s staying long enough to finish what they start. At their best, Sevens remind everyone that joy, wonder and play are essential parts of a well-lived life.

THE NEW RULES
Modern Home Style PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES | ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK HOME OF RYAN AND HILLARY BADER
For years, the rule was simple. Pick a palette, pick an aesthetic, and let it carry through every room. The all-white kitchen led to the allwhite living room led to the all-white everything. That era is over. The most interesting homes right now are doing something braver. They’re letting each room hold its own mood. What ties them together isn’t a single look. It’s the materials they keep coming back to: warm brass, sculptural lighting, marble, stained wood, and quiet neutrals holding it all together. We toured one home that gets it exactly right, and pulled out ideas worth borrowing.
4. WARM MODERN The all-white kitchen meets warm wood. Cream cabinetry stays, because the light it gives you is hard to beat. But the island gets a stained wood treatment that grounds the whole space. Brass pendants and hardware add glow. Velvet stools soften the lines. This is the kitchen the next decade is building toward.
5. THE JEWEL BOX Small spaces, big swing.
1. RESORT ENERGY Outdoor rooms designed with the rigor of interiors. This isn’t a backyard. It’s a destination. From the lined-up lounge chairs to the scalloped umbrellas to the green-striped pillows repeating across the deck. The lesson here is to stop treating outdoor furniture as an afterthought. Pick a palette and commit.
2. SCULPTURAL CALM One bold gesture in a quiet room. Everything in this great room is whispering, from the cream walls to the linen sectional to the chandelier’s delicate brass rings. And then a tree, reaching toward the coffered ceiling like it grew there on purpose. When the rest of the room is quiet, the boldest thing you can put in it is something alive.
Antiqued mercury glass, a brass faucet, fluted glass cabinets, golden pulls on crisp white shakers. The idea is to treat your tucked-away corners (bars, powder rooms, butler’s pantries) as the place to take your most theatrical swing. The smaller the room, the bolder you can be.
6. COLOR COCOON Saturated color in rooms meant for rest. Deep sage-spruce walls, ivory bedding, an antiqued mirror catching the shutter light. Proof that calm doesn’t have to mean beige. Color, used right, is the most restful thing you can put in a room. Find your shade and let it hold you.
7. BUILT FOR PLAY Rooms that don’t apologize for being fun.
Dark dining rooms are back, and better than ever.
A game table under a crystal chandelier. A leather club chair next to a telescope. A theater tucked in around the corner. The best entertaining spaces are the ones built for actual use, not just for looking at.
Bold taupe walls, an oval black table, sleek chairs, and an oversized round mirror standing in for art. The bright, airy dining room had its decade. Now bring on the supper club.
Different rooms, different moods, one home. The new rule, it turns out, is that there doesn’t have to be one.
3. MOODY MODERN
