The Men’s Issue
In honor of Father’s Day this month, we bring you our Men’s Issue.
First, we do a deep dive into the connection between guys and guitars. A common theory is that guys are motivated to pick up the guitar to get the girl, right? But after talking with several guitarists, we uncovered several surprising benefits beyond that.
We sat down with “Guitar Gods” Rod DeGeorge and Italian virtuoso Enrico Santacatterina who performed at Silver Moon Brewery in January. We talked with local guitarists Jason Schweitzer, David Miller and Matthew Fletcher as well. The answers to the benefits the guitar provides may surprise you. Turn the pages to find out more.
We also talked with Dr. Leslie Carter, owner of Deschutes Dermatology, who offers personalized hair restoration solutions for both men and women. Staying at the forefront of the latest and most effective treatment options, she sees how the end result plays a big role in building confidence.
And with summer camping adventures right around the corner, we feature tips and recipes for cooking over the campfire and also a gift guide for campfire cooking essentials just in time for Father’s Day.
We share an excerpt from a recent City Lifestyle podcast episode with Mike Johnson, former fan favorite on The Bachelorette and now founder of luxury skincare brand Oshun, about his journey to build his company. And finally, in this issue, we’ve included some ideas for great getaways with the guys.
While we celebrate the men in our lives this month, here’s to enjoying the arrival of our long-anticipated high desert summer.

FIRESIDE FOIL PACKET DINNER
Ingredients (Serves 4):
• 1 lb ground beef (formed into 4 patties or crumbled)
• 3–4 medium potatoes, sliced ¼-inch thick
• 2 carrots, sliced
• 1 small onion, sliced
• 1 bell pepper, sliced
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp smoked paprika
• Salt & pepper to taste
• Optional: shredded cheddar, sour cream, or fresh herbs

2. Lay out four sheets of heavy-duty foil (about 12×18 inches.)
3. Toss potatoes, carrots, onion, and bell pepper with olive oil and seasonings.
4. Divide vegetables evenly among packets, spreading into a flat layer.
5. Place a beef patty on top (or crumble beef over vegetables.)
6. Season lightly with additional salt and pepper.
7. Fold foil tightly, sealing edges while leaving a little space for steam.
8. Cook on grill grates or campfire coals for 30–40 minutes, turning once, until potatoes are tender and beef is cooked through.
9. Carefully open and finish with cheese, a dollop of sour cream, or fresh herbs.
EMBER-ROASTED GARDEN VEGGIE PACKETS (VEGETARIAN)

• 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped Directions:
1. Preheat grill or prepare campfire coals (medium-high heat.)
2. Lay out four sheets of heavy-duty foil.
3. Layer potatoes first, then top with broccoli, bell pepper, zucchini, and onion.
4. Drizzle each packet with olive oil.
5. Sprinkle evenly with garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
6. Seal foil tightly, leaving room for steam.
7. Cook for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until potatoes are fork-tender.
8. Finish with fresh parsley before serving.
Optional upgrades
• Add crumbled feta or goat cheese
• Serve over rice (cooked ahead at home)
• Wrap in warm tortillas for campfire veggie tacos
Campfire Tip
Cut vegetables to similar sizes so everything cooks evenly, and always use heavy-duty foil to lock in heat and flavor. Packets can be prepped ahead—just keep them chilled until they hit the fire.
STARLIGHT DUTCH OVEN APPLE CRISP
Ingredients (Serves 6–8):
Filling
• 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced (about 5–6 medium apples)
• 1/3 cup brown sugar
• 2 tbsp granulated sugar
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 2 tsp cinnamon
• ¼ tsp nutmeg
• 1 tbsp flour
• Pinch of salt
Crisp Topping
• 1 cup rolled oats
• ¾ cup flour
• ½ cup brown sugar
• ½ tsp cinnamon
• ½ cup (1 stick) cold butter, cubed
• Pinch of salt
Directions:
1. Prepare a campfire and let it burn down to a bed of hot coals, or preheat a grill to medium heat.
2. In a large bowl, combine apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour and salt. Transfer to a lightly greased 10–12” cast iron Dutch oven.
3. In a separate bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture is crumbly.
4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
5. Place the Dutch oven on a bed of coals or on a grill grate. Add a few coals to the lid if cooking over a fire.
6. Cook for 30–40 minutes, rotating occasionally, until apples are tender and the topping is golden.
7. Let cool slightly before serving.
Tips:
Make ahead: The topping can be prepared in advance and kept chilled in a cooler until ready to use.
Even cooking: Rotate the Dutch oven (both base and lid) every 10 minutes to prevent hot spots.
For the dad who’d rather cook under the open sky, these campfire-ready tools bring ease, flavor and a little extra enjoyment to every fireside meal.
Cast Iron Dutch Oven
A campfire classic for a reason. Perfect for everything from slow-simmered stews to golden apple crisp, cast iron holds heat beautifully and delivers that unmistakable fireside flavor.
Heavy-Duty Foil & Reusable Grill Packets
The secret behind easy, no-mess campfire meals. Upgrade Dad’s setup with extra-thick foil or reusable grill baskets designed for perfectly cooked packet dinners.
Heat-Resistant Gloves
From shifting coals to lifting hot lids, a sturdy pair of heat-resistant gloves makes campfire cooking safer—and a lot more comfortable.
Long-Handled Utensils
Keep a safe distance from the flames with durable, long-handled tongs, spatulas and spoons—essential tools for cooking over an open fire.
Fire Pit Cooking Grate
Turn any fire into an outdoor kitchen. A portable grate creates a stable surface for foil packets, cast iron and more.
Portable Camp Stove
For those times when campfires aren’t an option, a compact camp stove keeps the cooking going. Lightweight and easy to pack, it’s perfect for everything from morning coffee to onepan dinners—no flames required.
Campfire Spice Kit
A small, travel-ready set of favorite spices—think smoked paprika, garlic powder and sea salt—adds big flavor without taking up space.

Personalized Hair Restoration Solutions that Build Confidence
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOW BEAR MEDIA
A healthy head of hair is often associated with youth and vitality. But as men age, many begin to notice thinning—or even significant hair loss.
“Most hair loss in men is due to male pattern hair loss,” says board-certified medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Leslie Carter, owner of Deschutes Dermatology in Bend. “It’s estimated that 80% of men will experience some degree of it, and it’s hereditary.” While other causes of hair loss do exist, she notes, they’re far less common.
This type of hair loss is progressive and driven by DHT, a potent form of testosterone that gradually shrinks hair follicles over time. “Eventually, the follicles stop producing hair altogether,” she explains.
These days, more men are seeking treatment earlier—sometimes in their teens or early 20s—not just to regrow hair, but to preserve what they already have.
“I always prefer to treat early,” notes Dr. Carter. “It’s much easier to maintain hair than to regrow it once it’s gone, especially in more advanced stages.”
Dr. Leslie Carter, owner of Deschutes Dermatology in Bend

That early approach allows for simpler, more effective treatment plans. And while every patient is different, Dr. Carter emphasizes a comprehensive, personalized strategy.
“I look at what’s happening physiologically and ask, ‘Why is this occurring?’ Then I build a program that addresses those factors,” she states. “We take a multi-modal approach, meaning we often combine therapies that work in different ways. In most cases, that combination approach is more effective than relying on just one treatment alone.”
Treatment typically begins with oral and/or topical medications designed to block or manage DHT. Dr. Carter carefully reviews potential side effects and works closely with patients to find an approach they’re comfortable with.
“I listen to their concerns and help put things into perspective,” she explains. “And if something doesn’t feel right, we adjust. It’s a process of fine-tuning to get the best results with the fewest side effects.”
Another commonly used option is minoxidil (Rogaine®), available in both topical and oral forms, which helps stimulate blood flow to the scalp. “We often combine it with a DHT blocker, or sometimes use just one or the other,” she notes.
Red light therapy is another important tool that benefits most patients. It works by increasing blood flow to the scalp and reducing inflammation, helping to support healthier hair growth. While some at-home devices are available, medical-grade laser treatments offered in-office are significantly more powerful and are typically done one to three times per week before tapering.
Because hair growth takes time—often three to six months to see visible improvement—Dr. Carter also uses genetic testing to make the process more efficient and targeted from the start.
“Hair plays a big role in how we see ourselves. When it starts to change, it can really impact confidence. The good news is that there are more effective treatment options than ever before.”
—Dr. Leslie Carter, owner of Deschutes Dermatology in Bend
“We use a simple cheek swab to understand how your body is likely to respond to different treatments,” she says. “That allows me to fine-tune your plan instead of relying on trial and error.”
This insight helps guide the selection and dosing of oral medications and also supports the creation of customized topical formulations, which are prepared by a compounding pharmacy for each patient.
For patients who are good candidates, growth factor therapies may also be incorporated as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. At Deschutes Dermatology, these are delivered using a needle-free device that helps infuse the solution into the scalp while also increasing blood flow.
To stay at the forefront of hair restoration, Deschutes Dermatology partners with GetHairMD™, an organization that develops and continually updates advanced treatment protocols.
“They have a medical board that evaluates new technologies as they emerge,” states Dr. Carter.
“Over time, those innovations may become part of standard treatment options.”
Because hair loss can be complex, Dr. Carter emphasizes the importance of specialized care.
“Most dermatologists have training in hair loss, but more advanced cases often require additional time and attention,” she emphasizes. Appointments at her practice are typically longer than standard visits, allowing for a more in-depth and personalized approach.
“Hair plays a big role in how we see ourselves,” she adds. “When it starts to change, it can really impact confidence. The good news is that it’s becoming more accepted to talk about it—and there are more effective treatment options than ever before.”

MORE THAN MUSIC
LOCAL MEN SHARE HOW GUITAR CREATES CONNECTION
ARTICLE BY DONNA BURKLO
What is it about guys and guitars?
Hypothesis: A guy playing a guitar is in it to get the girl. There is something undeniable about the sexiness of a man caressing the neck, strumming the strings, and gazing lovingly at the curvature of the body - of a guitar. Type ‘what is it about guys and guitars’ into your browser and you’ll have enough fodder to support the hypothesis. Cue the research music.
Rod DeGeorge
The ‘Guitar Gods Revue’ was stop #1. The show featured two world-class players: American powerhouse guitarist Rod DeGeorge and Italian virtuoso Enrico Santacatterina. Between them, they’ve logged thousands of shows and recordings. Their drummer for the evening was Gary Glosser. With a curious wink, he offered his back-of-stage perspective on what it is about guys and guitars, “There’s even a term for it - the Gomlich Effect. Look it up.”
The internet tells us that the Gomlich Effect is a boy band phenomenon where “the law of physics states that if one girl screams for something, it will make other girls scream, and it will grow exponentially until all girls within a five-mile radius are screaming.”
This ‘science’ is brought to us by the writers of South Park through the character, ‘Chef’. Thanks, Gary.
As with so many other assumptions we hold without diving further in, direct conversation is the way to the answer.
A chat with Santacatterina during a break in the show changed the trajectory of the story in a flash. “Why the guitar?” he repeated back. “My parents gave me a guitar when I was six years old. I really never put it down after that. Sometimes I play acoustic for myself after a stressful day.” Not romancing, unwinding. Hmmmm.
Guitar as stress-reliever.
Bend local DeGeorge, who teaches guitar to all ages, tells the story of a young student. “I couldn’t tell if he liked me, or even liked the guitar at all. He was so shy.” As is often the case, DeGeorge had to take a break from teaching to go out
on the road performing. That meant several weeks without lessons. “While I was out, I got a long email from this kid,” DeGeorge tears up as he remembers, “he told me how much he missed his lessons with me.” That kid is now a professional musician who has opened for some of DeGeorge’s shows. “The guitar can give kids a level of confidence and self worth,” he notes.
Guitar as confidence-builder.
Local musician/industrial electrician Jason Schweitzer’s grandmother handed down her electric guitar to him in 7th grade. His dad showed him some chords and then gave him an acoustic guitar to add to his collection.
It was a great way to be invited to parties back then and Schweitzer immediately began writing his own music by improvising with what was happening around him. He went on to front bands and play shows. Yet it wasn’t the applause he was after. It was the crowd reactions to the music — the connection.
Life has thrown Schweitzer and his family some formidable losses. First his parents, then his teenaged son. “When my parents died, I could keep

writing and playing music. It was a special connection to have, playing the guitar dad gave me.” It’s taken longer to get back to music after losing his son, however. It’s harder to be in crowds. After a couple of years, Schweitzer is resuming his lunchtime YouTube videos with new music.
“It’s like another language. I’m communicating with another part of myself,” Schweitzer says.
Guitar as therapy.
As a working musician, songwriter, radio host and program director, David Miller has been in and around performance music since childhood. “I played ‘Proud Mary’ at a school assembly and have been ‘playing out’ [performing] about once a month ever since,” he recalls.
Growing up in extremely rural and underpopulated Lakeview, Oregon, there was a need to be creative when putting together performing bands. Miller remembers, “I was 15, playing in bars with 30 year-olds because there weren’t enough musicians able to play the kind of music they were looking for.” Lakeview was more than a little bit country and Miller was more than a little bit rock and roll and metal.
Miller caught the eye of Kelly Cannon in her sophomore year at Lakeview High.
Yes! Hypothesis support! The guitar gets the girl!
Cannon-Miller (they’re married now) looks back on the beginnings of their relationship and says, “We both didn’t fit. We both loved metal music. It was as if we were in the ‘disenfranchised club’.” She instinctively knew that music was how he expressed himself — his form of communication.
So, was she all a-flutter when he’d get up there and do his lead guitar vocalist thing? Not really. “I wanted him to get the feedback he deserved. I was nervous for him,” she stated matter-of-factly. “I was never nervous,” Miller interjects. The grins of more than 40 years together ensue.
Guitar as connection.
As the co-owner of Somni Studios, a full production recording studio in Bend, Matthew Fletcher, a professional guitarist and
drummer himself, has seen many bands and how members interact with each other.
“It’s like lanes in the road” for each musician in the band, Fletcher notices. “The “lane” for lead guitar and vocalist is, in a way, that they are often so talented that they can’t help but take the lead. They’ve often written the music and brought the group together. It’s not really about ego.”
Fletcher is more interested in support roles, which informs both his playing in several local bands and his work recording and mixing other musicians’ music. “I love that music is how I make my money!” Fletcher beams.
Guitar as work.
Conclusion: The guitar is an accessible instrument that produces rewarding sounds at all skill levels. It is an instrument of stress-relief, confidence-building, therapy, connection and is even used for making a living.
Anything else is an added perk.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST
Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short
Creative Director: Jen Birn
Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill
Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX
MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.
After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.
Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?
A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”
THE QUIET STANDARD:
MIKE JOHNSON
“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson
Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”
Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?
A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. GUYS’ GUYS’ GETAWAYS GETAWAYS
FOUR GREAT PLACES FOR GROOVES, GRUB AND GAWKING WITH BEST BROS
Has it been too long since your tribe gathered to rib and one-up each other as only guys can do? To help plan a getaway for just the guys, City Lifestyle gathered an eclectic list of locations offering tons of things to see, do and experience. Here’s hoping the only ribs one will get on this guys’ getaway are the kind to hold in hands while barbecue sauce drips onto shirts.
Scottsdale/Phoenix
There’s no other tournament on the PGA Tour like the Waste Management Phoenix Open and no hole like the legendary 16th, where 20,000 boisterous fans boo the tee shots that miss the green. The other 51 weeks of the year, golfers can play TPC Scottsdale or try one of more than 200 courses in the Scottsdale area, a top golf destination. Another winter event is the BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction. Even if one’s only collector car was a Hot Wheels, it’s a blast to peruse the acres of autos for sale before heading inside to watch the unique or renowned cars crossing the auction block. When it’s time to get moving, the strenuous hike up Camelback Mountain in nearby Phoenix is a bucket-list item. Need a more moderate trail? Experience the same magic of the majestic saguaro cactus in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
New Orleans
It’s always a party in New Orleans (NOLA), especially when it comes to festivals, many of them centered around music. Folk to funk, gospel to jazz, zydeco, blues, African and other musical styles are celebrated on the Jazz and Heritage Festival’s 12 stages. If free admission is more desired, don’t miss the French Quarter Festival featuring local musicians and food vendors representing
dozens of New Orleans restaurants. Part of the fun of Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo is admiring revelers’ watercraft, some of them homemade just for this festival on the banks of Bayou Saint John. If one of the festivals can’t be attended, there’s still plenty of NOLA live music, particularly the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street. And when a break from crowds is needed, take a guided swamp tour. Kitschy, yes, but it’s a hoot to cruise around on a swamp buggy while looking for alligators.
Bowling Green, Kentucky
“America’s Sports Car” is produced at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, where visitors can join guided tours to observe Corvettes being built and learn the fascinating history of these sexy autos. See examples of all Corvette generations at the National Corvette Museum. And if the need for speed is still felt, a few times a year Xtreme Experience offers driving or ride-along events in exotics like Ferraris or Lamborghinis at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park. After getting all revved up, cool down at Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest known cave system in the world and a World Heritage Site, where guided tours take participants through tunnels humans have used for thousands of years. And after all this touring, the Bowling Green area is the southernmost point in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail of distilleries.
Austin
Live music rules here, with iconic venues such as Antone’s, The Continental Club, the White Horse and hundreds of other locations, from dive bars to big stages. From rock and blues to country and urban, music is heard every night of the week (and many afternoons as well). When guys are hungry, there are tons of barbeque and Tex-Mex joints. Unique food trucks are truly a thing here, with nearly 2,000 food trailers in town. Burn some calories biking or running the Southern Walnut Creek Trail or one of many paved paths. Get out on the water in a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard on Lake Travis or Lady Bird Lake. Take a dip in the historic Barton Springs Pool, where the underground springs keep the water around 68 degrees all year.
