We talked with co-founder, artist and Executive Director Nicola Carpinelli and Dr. Maya Heck (on our cover) about the impact of the heart-mind connection and how this thriving creativity hub is making a difference in the mental health of our local youth.

One of the newest product lines to hit the market is Fofo’s Dog Treats. Out of the kitchen of owners and dog lovers Ashley Grubbs and Orlando Amador, comes delicious treats made daily with wholesome ingredients such as bananas, blueberries, pumpkin and oatmeal.

As a fun hobby, Grubbs and ‘Fofo,’ Amador’s nickname, used to bake dog treats for their friends in Houston, Texas. Companion Animal Medical Project (CAMP) Caring for Companion Animals and Their People Josh held each of the four kittens with tears in his eyes as he surrendered them on to a better life. “This isn’t a place for kittens to live,” he murmured into one’s fur. The place he refers to is commonly known as Dirt World, or Juniper Ridge, a location bordered to the west

by Highway 97 between Bend and Redmond that is temporarily sanctioned for community members without homes to live and have access to services.

Nationwide, the reported numbers vary with respect to people living houseless who also have companion animals. According to a study titled, Pet Ownership among Homeless Youth: Associations with Mental Health, Service Utilization and Housing Status, by Rhoades, Winetrob, and Rice, likely one in four individuals or family units living houseless have at least one dog or cat. Locally, and especially out in more remote camps, the percentage is much higher. Each person is keenly aware that having a pet adds another layer of challenge to obtaining stable housing or shelter, yet, according to the study cited above, 84% of the youth reported that their pet keeps them company, 79% say their pet makes them feel loved, 73% say their pet helps them feel safe, and 60% say their pet eats before they do. Unless service providers who work to help with basic needs, connections, and housing navigation understand the depth of this relationship, they and the people they serve will remain at an impasse.

Enter Johannah Johnson and Companion Animal Medical Project, or CAMP. In 2020, after working in the animal welfare industry and while working as a Community Outreach Advocate for THRIVE Central Oregon, Johnson noticed a gap in available services. No one was addressing the companion animal needs of individuals and families living houseless or precariously housed. She knew through her work at THRIVE that it takes time and trust to build a relationship that could result in successful housing or shelter placement. She knew through her work in animal welfare just how strong the bond could be between human and companion animal. She built a scrappy organization from nothing that is now a critical resource. CAMP provides veterinary care to support pet-retention and increase stability for pets and their owners experiencing, or at-risk of, homelessness.

The CAMP mobile clinic vans are set up to provide on-site services with the support of local veterinarians, CAMP staff, and volunteers. They’ve seen as many as 86 animals during a pre-advertised clinic offering vaccinations, de-worming, flea and tick treatments, spay/neuter sign ups, and checkins with the humans. Over these six years, CAMP has provided 1,000 spay/ neuter procedures with exponential benefit to the community.

“When I started CAMP, I never thought we would be such a foundational part of the continuum of care,” Johnson, a certified Community Health Worker, says. “Because of our work and partnership, they’ve included questions about companion animals on vulnerability assessments,” an important step in planning for shelter and housing placement.

When Josh agreed to surrender the kittens and have their momma spayed, it was the result of many visits to his camp with pet food and supplies. At each visit CAMP staff shared a bit more information and gained a bit more trust. At the office, when Johnson brought in the kittens, Kale Richardson, CAMP Outreach and Ready Together Navigator cheered, “Yes!” and knew exactly whose they were and celebrated the fact that their weeks of effort had paid off. They also got to work making a spay appointment for momma cat. Johnson, as Founder and Executive Director, got to work cleaning the urine-soaked kitten carrier ‘cause that’s how she rolls.

Back at Dirt World, Mike and Becca are juggling several cats and kittens and six dogs. They’ve become known in the area as people who will take in animals others can’t keep for one reason or another. Their camp consists of a couple of trailers in disrepair and a car that serves as shade and sleeping quarters. They don’t have any special ability or means to actually handle this extra load, yet this is a responsibility they take seriously.

Johnson observes, “People who grew up in a system where love wasn’t available sometimes have a number of animals — the family they never had. They want to feel needed. They want to feel loved. They get a sense of purpose from the animals.” The approach Johnson has fostered at CAMP is not to shame or judge, it’s to inform and support — and be ready to act when people choose to take the next positive step.

In addition to regular outreach and clinics, CAMP has begun to offer specialized housing navigation.

Ready Together is their pet readiness program supporting transition into shelter or housing by assisting with vaccinations and documentation, spay/neuter status documentation, counseling regarding numbers of animals viable for different housing options, education regarding pet behavior generally and specifically for each shelter or housing option.

Josh is on his way. Mike and Becca aren’t ready. How could they be? There are living beings who need them.

Yet one day something will click and CAMP will be there to assist.

CAMP provides essential services for the companion animals of houseless residents in Central Oregon.

BELONGING When you first enter Hearts Unknown Education’s space, the first thing you notice isn’t the art. It’s the kids.

They’re painting, singing, laughing, building, talking, eating, creating and connecting.

There are no cliques, no competitions and remarkably few cell phones. Instead, there is sharing, conversation, creativity and a sense of belonging that can be felt the moment you walk through the doors.

For hundreds of Central Oregon youth and families, Hearts Unknown Education – better known as HUE – has become far more than an after-school arts program. It is a safe place to land, a place to be seen and a place where young people are free to discover who they are through creativity, community and unconditional support. There is no judgement here.

Founded in 2022 by artist and Executive Director Nicola Carpenelli, along with Dr. Howard Asher, this 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization has grown from a handful of kids gathered in a small rented space to a thriving creativity hub serving more than 500 youth in a colorful 10,000 square foot building on Franklin Ave. Yet, despite its growth, HUE remains focused on the youth they serve, and on the heart-mind connection. “Our philosophy is to approach the mind through the heart,” notes Carpinelli. “We know there is a strong neurological connection between emotions and well-being.”

For Dr. Maya Heck, a psychiatrist with St. Charles Health System and HUE’s board president and mental health director, this connection is key, and HUE’s approach really works.

“There are more neurons in the heart than people think. Normally people think neurons are just in the brain, but essentially there’s a highway for neurons, a connection between the brain and the heart,” explains Dr. Heck.

“HUE creates a safe space for kids to be themselves, we access them through their heart, and that positively impacts their brain.”

“We love these kids. We accept these kids. We offer them unconditional encouragement and support,” remarks Carpinelli. “That’s the number one thing we do at HUE. Through our heart work, we create and hold space for healing.”

According to Carpinelli, everything the organization does comes down to three principles: freedom of expression, unconditional positive regard and community. “We love and encourage these children,” he says. “That’s the number one thing we do.”

That philosophy is woven into every corner of the organization.

Unlike many after-school programs, HUE does not require children to follow a prescribed curriculum or move from activity to activity on a schedule. Kids are free to explore painting, drawing, music, photography, creative writing, knitting and other artistic pursuits at their own pace. Some arrive eager to create. Others simply need a quiet place to sit, observe and decompress after a difficult day.

There is no pressure to perform. No grades. No expectation of perfection. Just an open invitation to create and explore.

One of Carpinelli’s favorite workshops is called “Find the Beauty in the Mess.” Participants are encouraged to make the ugliest painting they can imagine. The exercise quickly dissolves fear and self-judgement, allowing kids to embrace mistakes and discover unexpected beauty in the process.

“The message is that life is messy,” Carpinelli explains. “Now let’s find the beauty in it.”

That message resonates deeply with many of the young people who walk through HUE’s doors.

Some arrive struggling with anxiety, depression, isolation or difficult circumstances at home. Others simply feel out of place.

What they find at HUE is something many young people desperately need – trusted adults who listen, encourage and keep showing up. HUE has several adult volunteers who have been with Carpinelli since the beginning.

According to Dr. Heck, this consistency can be life-changing for youth. “A lot of these kids who have experienced trauma or abuse just need one adult who can be someone for them,” she says. “They can connect with “Nico.” They can connect with one of the volunteers. They can connect with someone who makes them feel supported and accepted.”

That sense of acceptance may be one of HUE’s greatest strengths.

Carpinelli recalls a teenager who spent months sitting quietly by herself, avoiding interaction with other students. One day he overheard her singing. Encouraged hearing this, he invited her to perform with a group of musicians at HUE. The transformation was immediate.

Within moments, she had found her voice – and a community where she felt safe and supported.

“It was like watching a flower bloom,” recalls Carpinelli.

He and Dr. Heck have witnessed similar breakthroughs countless times over the years.

One young man arrived withdrawn, angry and struggling to connect with others. Through painting, he found a healthy outlet for emotions he couldn’t yet express in words. Over time, his confidence grew. He began smiling, engaging with other kids and building friendships.

For many children, art becomes a bridge to something bigger.

“It helps them express things they cannot verbalize,” says Dr. Heck. “A lot of kids have a difficult time identifying or explaining emotions. Art gives them a way to get those feelings out.”

According to Tara, a parent of a HUE student, “HUE saves lives.

HUE saves the lives of the wallflower children who are desperately trying to navigate this world . . . You create space for belonging, creation, and most importantly, for healing – the type of healing that you don’t really know is taking place.”

Research increasingly supports what HUE volunteers and families witness every day: creative expression can reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, build confidence and strengthen social connections. At HUE, those benefits happen naturally.

In a time when loneliness and social isolation among young people continues to rise, HUE has become what many describe as vital “third space” – a place outside of home and school where kids can gather, build relationships and simply be themselves.

That sense of community extends beyond the students.

More than 20 volunteers help support HUE’s programs, many returning week after week to mentor and encourage participants.

Local businesses partner with HUE to donate food, art supplies and financial support. Community partners continue to help the organization expand its reach and impact.

Today, HUE is also exploring ways to deepen its mental health support services in hopes of bringing more mental health professionals on-site throughout the week. For Dr. Heck, exploring these options represents an important shift in how communities think about mental health.

“You’re really moving the needle for a kid’s mental health in a place like this,” she states. “This is where the real prevention happens.”

“In the near future, I see HUE as a recognized pillar of preventative youth mental health in Central Oregon.

In addition to a studio space, a trusted community hub where art, music, and emotional support intersect before crisis occurs,” emphasizes Dr. Heck. “I believe HUE is integral — not as a replacement for therapy, but as a buffer and safety net. As a psychiatrist, I deeply believe in treatment including medication and formal psychotherapy. But I equally believe in prevention and HUE is prevention in action.”

But for now, the focus remains where it has always been – the kids.

Every afternoon, another wave of young people walks through HUE’s doors carrying the challenges of adolescence, family struggles, academic pressures and an increasingly complicated world.

Inside, they find paint brushes, instruments, cameras, snacks – and much more basic and essential – unconditional love and support. When they walk into this space, they find trusted adults, mentors, who see them, encourage them and keep showing up. More importantly, they find a place where they belong.

And, sometimes, that can make all the difference.

“What gives me the most hope right now is the kids,” remarks Dr. Heck. “Despite the pressure they’re under, they are thoughtful, emotionally aware, and craving real connection. When given the space to be authentic, they rise to it.”

Support HUE

Hearts Unknown Education (HUE) offers classes and services to every child free of charge. Accessibility is intentional. Offering services at no cost removes stigma and removes barriers. Support comes from sustaining donors, grants, local business partnerships, and fundraising events.

IT COSTS:

• $30 to support one youth for one class (including supplies, food, and staff support) • $300 to offer a class for 20–25 youth • $3,500 to operate HUE for one week • $15,000 to operate HUE for one month • $6,000 to cover weekly classes for one youth for an entire year • $7,500 to fund a full year of nourishment • $10,000 to provide art supplies for the year

of Sunshine BRING SUNSHINE INDOORS WITH TIPS FOR GROWING LEMON TREES AND SIMPLE RECIPES TO ENJOY TOGETHER ARTICLE BY JULIE E. FURNAS

Summer is peak lemon season and with lemons comes lemonade, popsicles, baked goods and more! Summer is also a great time to teach kids the value of gardening, and caring for a small lemon tree can be a great starter project. Because citrus trees thrive in warmer climates, growing any type of citrus in Central Oregon can be challenging. But with the right tools, specialized products and patience, the possibilities are endless!

Studies show that growing plants and trees at home provides a valuable opportunity for children to learn about basic gardening and how plants, herbs and trees can thrive both inside and out.

LEMONADE STAND LEMONADE Cut and squeeze a bag of lemons into a large drink dispenser. Add water and several cups of sugar. Taste to your liking. Add cut up lemons to the top for extra flavor.

LEMONADE POPSICLES Pour lemonade into popsicle makers. Add small fresh fruit like blueberries and raspberries for a nice flavor. Secure the popsicle sticks in and put in freezer, best served the next day.

With dedication and patience, kids will take pride in watching their lemon tree flourish. Some local nurseries might carry lemon trees. But, lemon seeds are easy to germinate and make attractive houseplants (sprouting a tree can be a fun project for kids!) While a homegrown lemon tree may take years to produce enough fruit for lemonade or baking, a trip to the farmers market or local grocery store can provide an instant harvest—offering kids a fun way to learn where their food comes from while enjoying a taste of sunshine in simple summer recipes.

LEMON BARS ingredients • 3 cups all-purpose flour (2 ½ cups for crust, ½ cup for filling) • 2/3 cup powder sugar for the shortbread and dusting on top • ½ tsp. salt • 12 tbsp. butter (melted) • 3 tbsp. of lemon zest (usually three lemons) • 3 cups of sugar • 8 eggs • 1 cup of fresh lemon juice • 1 tsp. of vanilla extract (optional)

directions Set oven to 350 degrees and line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper. Sift the flour, salt, and powdered sugar into a bowl and whisk together. Pour in the melted butter. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to mix in the batter. Spread the dough out onto the lined baking pan and press down with fingers to get a nice even layer.

Bake for about twenty minutes or until it is a light golden color.

Add the sugar to your food processor then grate in the zest of three lemons. Pulse until the zest is fully mixed in.

Juice the lemons until you get a full cup; add more if you prefer.

Add the lemon, sugar and remaining ½ cup flour to a large bowl.

Sift the flour and sugar together.

Add the eggs and lemon juice; mix well. Mix the flour and sugar with the lemon and eggs.

Pour the filling onto the warm short bread base. Placing a pan on a larger baking sheet makes it easier to remove from the oven.

Bake for about 25 minutes or until the center is set. Rotate pan halfway through baking.

Allow to cool for an hour, then transfer to the refrigerator for another two hours. Once chilled, remove from pan and peel away the parchment paper.

Dust the bars with powdered sugar. Use a sharp, damp knife to cut the bars. For neatest cuts, clean and re-wet the knife after each cut. Serve immediately or chill for future servings.

TIPS FOR GROWING LEMON TREES IN CENTRAL OREGON • Choose a Meyer lemon—a hardy hybrid and a great starter tree for kids.

• Plant in an 8- to 10-inch clay or terracotta pot with good drainage.

• Use a fast-draining citrus potting mix and avoid overwatering.

• Be patient—fruit may take several years, so store-bought lemons may fill the gap.

• Give trees 6–8 hours of summer sun and as much winter light as possible.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage.

Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s.

“There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.
