— D r. Ke nt Ro o k s t o o l At the age of 28, Kent Rookstool, a doctor of chiropractic, was suffering from debilitating back pain. It was so bad that he could hardly walk. He tried everything – chiropractic adjustments, heat, ice, massage, acupuncture, pain medication and even surgery.

Nothing helped. He was depressed and felt hopeless.

He then heard about regenerative medicine, and it changed his life. Today, he’s able to practice the career he loves, be an active partner to wife, Angie, and be an involved dad with their 3-year-old daughter.

Dr. Kent knew other people were going through the same experience, and he wanted to help them get their lives back too. In 2022, he founded Advanced Pain Solutions in Redmond.

“When people hurt really badly or can't do what they want, it leads to great depression,” he says.

“It's scary thinking that your life is going to be like that forever.”

When patients come in, he finds out what their goals are and then works with them to meet those goals. “We don't just want to fix their pain or cover up their pain with medications; we want to actually give them the ability to live the life they want,” explains Dr. Kent.

What makes Advanced Pain Solutions really stand out is its comprehensive approach. “Chiropractic is amazing by itself, physiotherapy is amazing by itself, and regenerative medicine is amazing by itself, but when you put all three together, it's just so much better,” Dr. Kent states.

So how does regenerative medicine work?

“There are cells inside our bodies that help us heal, and these cells are really prevalent when we’re a

newborn because they're helping grow a human body,” he says. “But, by the time we’re 18, we only have 40% of those cells, and by the time we’re 60, we only have 5% of those cells. That's part of the reason why things start breaking down.”

These special cells can be found in umbilical cords, which parents can donate after a healthy, full-term birth. “It goes to an FDA accredited lab where it's screened and tested to make sure it's safe,” notes Dr. Kent. “We then inject it into the person where they have an injury and it helps them heal at a rate that they couldn't heal before. It's also one of the safest treatments one can have and has very few side effects.”

While these cells go to work healing the joint or other injured area, sometimes an additional step is needed. For example, when it's a chronic condition that was caused by improper mechanics, that also must be addressed. This is where the comprehensive approach comes in.

“An easy analogy is a car that is out of alignment and because of that, its tires wear out,” he says.

“Regenerative medicine is like getting new tires without getting an alignment, so the tire is going to wear out again, but if you correct the mechanics of the alignment as well, through chiropractic treatments, you get a true fix.”

Advanced Pain Solutions treats many patients with chronic pain. “We sometimes get complacent and feel like we're supposed to just live with the pain, but we don't have to,” remarks Dr. Kent.

“There are things that can be done.”

Winter Skin Care 101 PROTECTING YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN YEAR ROUND

Winter in the High Desert means long, dry winters and yearround sunshine. While outdoors, our skin is exposed to these extreme conditions—often at high altitudes—and this can cause a plethora of skin issues like peeling, winter sunburn and dehydration. Peters Dermatology Center, whose providers specialize in the treatment and prevention of skin cancer, gave us an overview of their winter skin treatments, recommended products, and skin cancer screenings.

Q. WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR?

With dry, sunny conditions, a thick, moisturizing sunscreen serves two purposes, protection and moisture. Products such as Elta MD, Tizo or Alastin are excellent and offered at our center. Heavier creams are more suited for dry winter weather.

FACIAL CLEANSER

Your cleanser should put moisture into the skin, rather than taking it out. Look for products that specifically say ‘gentle’ and ‘moisturizing’ on the label. Avoid products that contain alcohol, as these can be drying.

BODY CLEANSER

The skin below your neck needs just as much care as your face. Look for liquid, gel, or mousse cleansers, labeled ‘fragrance-free’—the creamier the better! For patients with eczema, products that contain petrolatum, shea butter, and silicones are best.

FACIAL MOISTURIZER

Lighter lotions may not be enough to protect your skin from the elements in colder, drier climates. Look for creams, oils, or balms with jojoba oil or Hyaluronic acid.

BODY MOISTURIZER

Moisturizing your body while your skin is still damp after a shower or bath is an effective way to keep skin hydrated. This is because the moisturizer traps existing moisture in skin. Other ingredients that work well for dry skin are glycerin, mineral oil, petrolatum, and shea butter.

Q. WHAT TYPES OF SKIN ISSUES DO YOU SEE THE MOST IN CENTRAL OREGON? The most prevalent skin issue in Central Oregon due to our outdoor lifestyle and plentiful sunshine is, unfortunately, skin cancer.

Q. WHY IS SUNSCREEN STILL IMPORTANT IN THE WINTER?

Whether skiing, snowshoeing, walking, or running, exposure to the sun and its reflection on the snow can increase total UV exposure. Your sunscreen should offer broad-spectrum protection, water resistance, and have an SPF 30 minimum with active ingredients of zinc and titanium dioxide which are physical sunblocks.

Peters Dermatology Center also offers Sunday afternoon hats, arm sleeves and gloves to help keep your skin protected throughout the year.

Q. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN SKIN CANCER SCREENING? Skin cancer screenings consist of a thorough head to toe exam of the skin.

Returning patients with a recent history of skin cancer should be seen every six months while someone who has had a recent melanoma or is immunocompromised should be seen every three months until their schedule is changed by the provider. Typically, a patient who has been skin cancer free for two years can be seen annually, while someone who has never had a skin cancer or precancer and follows daily skin protection precautions while out in the sun can be screened every 18 - 24 months. If a patient develops a suspicious lesion they should be seen as soon as possible, especially if it is fast growing.

As winter fast approaches, the sound of a tropical escape already begins to sing its siren song, beckoning us to take a dip in endless turquoise waters. I can think of no better place to ditch the snow for snorkeling than beautiful Hawai’i. But which island you ask?

Well, let me invite you to consider one of the best kept secrets of Hawai'i. The rugged and dynamic ʻāina (land) known as Hawai’i Island, aka the Big Island. You’ll find everything from world class luxury resorts and locally sourced cuisine, to snorkeling and epic natural wonders. On the leeward side is the old historic town of Kailua-Kona. Whether you’re a “lounge-by-the-pool-all-day” kind of traveler or more of the adventure seeking type, Kona

has something for everyone. As you journey along on my two perfect days, you’ll quickly see, like I did, that Kona has a deep, rich story to tell. Let’s turn the pages together!

My journey began as I arrived at the palm tree lined entrance to the beautiful Kona Village. The original resort, destroyed by a tsunami in 2011, was recently rebuilt back to its original charm but with modern touches. My hale (room), was perched atop lava rock, looking over the bay with the ocean only a few feet away. It could not have been more picturesque.

After a relaxing morning, I took off (literally), on my Kohala Coastline helicopter tour with Paradise Helicopters. The sights were epic and Tyler, our pilot, was a wealth of CONTINUED >

knowledge about the island’s history. It made the experience that much more captivating.

From there, I decided to check out Aloha Vibes, a vibrant and modern oceanfront bar and grill located in Kona Town in the historic Kona Inn, the first hotel constructed in Kona and now a shopping center. The views were spectacular and the cocktails were beautifully crafted. From the restaurant’s overall aesthetic to its unique menu, everything at Aloha Vibes is done with intention.

Day two started early with my kayak tour with Kona Boys in Kealakekua Bay, one of the largest sheltered natural bays on the Big Island. The early morning snorkel was a dream and the dolphins stopped by to say hi!

After a long day out on the water, I made my way up north to Lava Lava Beach Club for a late lunch. Lava Lava, an institution in Kona, is best known for its beachfront location and colorful island cuisine. My table was a mere few feet from the water, with toes in the sand.

After a long morning on the water, I wanted something hearty. Their pineapple chicken fried rice bowl (served in an actual pineapple) did the trick. The food was incredible, and the ambiance and live music leaves you coming back for more.

I decided to head back to Kona Village for one last evening of relaxation after a busy day. I grabbed a cocktail from The New Moon, a schooner (formerly owned by the original owners of the Kona Village), turned poolside bar and relaxed by the beach in a lounger propped in the shade between two palm trees. The perfect ending to a whirlwind two-day Kona adventure!

Pineapple Banana Bowl INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups frozen pineapple • 1 frozen banana • 1 handful spinach (optional) • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 tablespoon manuka honey (or other natural sweetener) • ¼ inch fresh ginger • ½ cup coconut water

Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day. Try some of these simple recipes, or create your own combinations to give your health a boost.

TOPPING SUGGESTIONS: • fresh fruit • seeds • pomegranate seeds

Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a bowl and top with desired toppings.

Carrot Orange Bowl INGREDIENTS: • 1 orange or 2 clementines • ½ cup carrots • 1 cup frozen mangos • 1 cup frozen peaches • ½ banana • ½ cup vanilla yogurt • ½ teaspoon turmeric, ground • small pinch of pepper Blend all ingredients until smooth. Top with desired toppings.

Nutty Chocolate Bowl INGREDIENTS: • 2 frozen bananas • 2 tablespoons cacao powder • 2 tablespoons peanut butter (or other nut butter) • 1 date • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract • ¼ cup almond milk or oat milk • 2 tablespoons chia seeds, optional Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
