With the change of seasons, you might be thinking of updating your wardrobe, finding that perfect accessory for yourself or your home . . . or even thinking about a “makeunder” to streamline your beauty regime. If you are in the mood for some old-fashioned retail therapy complete with genuine and personal customer service, a drive down to La Petite Boutique Unique in Sunriver is worth it!
This intimate shop is a hidden gem in the Sunriver Village Mall, with both brand-new clothing for the entire family, along with lightly loved luxury vintage pieces from designers such as Chanel, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Versace, Carlisle and more. Along with clothing and fabulous accessories, you can find unique home décor pieces, including vintage dinnerware from Italy and Paris and fine crystal. The boutique also carries healthy mineral sun protection from Susan Posnick that conceals imperfections better than makeup, a mineral makeup color line, as well as organic cold-pressed skincare from LEEF Organics and gifts for under $20.
According to La Petite Boutique
Unique shop co-owner Stephen Marshall, each piece in the shop is hand selected. “We work with a handful of collectors, and we carry only what we love. We have things ranging from very affordable to not affordable at all,” he says. And, though nestled in a resort community, Marshall emphasizes that their shop focuses as much on locals as they do on short-term visitors.
When customers approach the shop, they are greeted by the store ambassador, a four-year-old Scottish
Terrier/Dachshund mix named Ollie. Once inside, customers are in for a truly unique experience . . . personalized customer service including a genuine effort to help each discover just what they are looking for, even if it’s just a chance to browse or window shop.
With many years of experience in their respective fields, co-owners Marshall and Brett Bizik opened La Petite Boutique Unique in April.
A native Oregonian with an educational background in music and theology, Marshall is an award-winning building and interior designer and owner and principal designer for Stephen Marshall Design. A current piano instructor at the Cascade School of Music and the new choir director at Nativity Lutheran Church in Bend, Marshall wasted no time finding ways to serve in the Central Oregon community. “It’s wonderful to be able to share what I’ve learned through the years with others,” he says. “It’s just really exciting to see what comes next.”
Bizik has worked in the beauty industry for over 30 years, 20 of those in Beverly Hills at Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and more. Through the years, Bizik discovered that all of his clients shared a common goal . . . to look and feel their best, and to look younger. “I decided to become a youthfulness specialist,” Bizik explains. “What I do is certainly not superficial, however. My goal is to show people how to feel their best by celebrating and enhancing each individual’s uniqueness, so they look like their best selves without looking like they are wearing any makeup at all. When you look your best, it helps you feel your best, and when you feel your best, you are happier and more loving to yourself and others.”
In addition to his experience and expertise in the makeup, beauty and

With their shop up and running, Bizik has begun offering “Learning on Location (LOL)”, where he brings education and laughter to customers in their home. This 2-hour private party is free with a minimum number of guests.

A short 20-minute drive from Bend will take you to a whole other world. “It’s interesting how topography changes as you get out of Bend,” says Lindsay Borkowski, director of sales and marketing at Sunriver Resort. “Here, you’re surrounded by the Deschutes National Forest and have completely unobstructed views of this beautiful area. We’re also situated in the middle of an adventurer’s paradise.”
The Bend community, she explains, views the resort as the perfect staycation destination. With its blend of luxury and casual comfort, Sunriver Resort truly does offer something for everyone. Outdoor activities vary with the season, but many visitors love to pick up a bike at the Bike Barn and ride the trails around the resort, while others may choose to float down the scenic and calm Deschutes River on paddle boards, canoes, kayaks and rafts. “You’ll see wildlife along the way and it’s total relaxation,” she remarks. Golf, of course, is also very popular in the warmer months.
“In the off season, we offer really great specials and packages to welcome locals down to Sunriver. We try to do something different every year for families, friends and couples. In the winter, people love cross country skiing and snowshoeing on our property, and during the holidays we offer festive sleigh rides.” Believe it or not, the pool is also a huge attraction. “Our guests love getting a room when it’s 30 degrees and snowing outside and relaxing in the warm water of our indoor pool.”
Sunriver also usually has a dining package, so locals can stay and dine at extremely reduced rates. The resort has 11 different food and beverage options during its peak season, but the Lodge Kitchen and Owl’s Nest, its two main restaurants, stay open year round, seven days a week and have some of the best views of the Cascade Range and wild meadows.
“Owl’s Nest is a casual, pub-style restaurant with great burgers and sandwiches with local beers on tap and really special infused cocktails,” Borkowski explains. “Lodge Kitchen offers three meals a day and has a very diverse menu. Our chef dry ages all of his own beef and the steaks are just phenomenal. On weekends people can enjoy a fabulous brunch with Bloody Mary and mimosa bars.” Its menu is all regionally and locally sourced, and changes seasonally. Its indulgent Sage Springs Club & Spa is a great place for guests and locals to have an all-day spa experience. A variety of services such as massages, mani/pedis, an infrared sauna, facials and milk and honey treatments are available. One of the most requested and unique services are the CBD treatments, which are panaceas for muscle pain and soreness.
A NEARBY STAYCATION WHERE YOU CAN GET AWAY FROM IT ALL
Many of the products used are organic, locally grown and hand-crafted. There’s also food and beverage service in the spa, so visitors can order lunch and a glass of champagne and hang out with friends for the day.
For those staying in the hotel, every single room accommodation has a stone fireplace for a home-like, cozy feel, and each room has a lovely view of the meadows and mountain vistas. There are beautiful wood beams and stonework throughout the entire resort, bringing nature indoors.
While its Cove Aquatic Center and Sage Springs Athletic Club are strictly for guests (or members when it comes to the club), its other facilities, including the spa, restaurants, marina for water sports and stables for horseback riding, are open to the public.
Sunriver also hosts many large meetings and events such as conferences and weddings. It even has its own convention center.
Whether staying for a week with family, a long weekend with your significant other, or the day with friends, you’ll always look forward to coming back. “We’ve got it all and I think that’s what really attracts people to the destination,” Borkowski says.

These silver minimalist rings for men can elevate a look and infuse it with a touch of luxury. Handmade leather bracelets offer a timeless look to any outfit.
When it comes to Fall 2023 style, there are certainly trends in the industry. However, there are timeless pieces that never go out of style and will always be a welcome addition to any wardrobe. Add a favorite piece of clothing or an accessory that you bought years ago, something that belonged to a family member or a treasured piece that you found on a recent thrift store shopping adventure (thrifting is a trend all its own!) Whatever the case, accessorizing your wardrobe does not mean you have to buy something new. This Eddie Bauer leather jacket is one such piece… a timeless tool for accessorizing any outfit while also providing warmth and protection for those cool (or cold) Central Oregon evenings.
This versatile leather sling bag for women comes in a variety of colors. With other sizes and shapes available at Evrgreen Clothing in downtown Bend, the sale of these bags empowers and impacts women around the world.
When it comes to fashion, accessories have the incredible power to completely transform a look, adding that extra touch of elegance and style. They are the equivalent of sprinkles on ice cream, enhancing the overall experience. From watches to rings, bracelets to scarves, hats to jackets, each piece plays a vital role in creating a well-rounded, stylish ensemble that stands the test of time.
Home styling is more than space planning and staging - the most important part of the discovery is you. It’s personal. It’s about learning what brings you joy, sourcing and coordinating the things you love, and arranging them in a way that functions beautifully, looks stylish, and, most importantly, feels like home.
When it comes to styling your home, Sandy Mahoney from Create Home, a curated home store, encourages you to keep in mind these three simple things:
“Some people don’t recognize their own favorites,” says Sandy. “We have a job to find what favorites work.” She understands that people know what they like generally but can struggle to pull those things into their home. Incorporating a client’s favorite aspects into a design, even small things like an antique clock, a gift from a family member, or a piece of art that they love, are what turns a space into a home.
More than knowledge of home decoration, architecture, and style, a big part of an interior designer is simply pushing people out of their comfort zones. “Stylists get people to think about something they haven’t thought about before,” Sandy explains. “Crafting ideas between the expertise of the designer and preferences of the client produce better ideas than any single party could come up with on their own.”
Sandy laughs when pressed about styling. “I mean, we don’t cut our own hair,” she remarks. Her point here is that home stylists, like hair stylists, have a specific area of expertise. They enhance the function of space, solve challenges, and have a wealth of experience to draw from. They know how to build rooms around clients’ preferences while still creating an aesthetic space they know the client will love.
When using a neutral palette combine texture and contrast to create a softer look that feels like home.
Weaving some of everyone’s favorite things into the design process creates a connection to the space and your home.
An important aspect of designing a home for the whole family is getting input from everyone. “If each person is involved, even in a small way, it creates a different connection to your home,” says Sandy. She adds that there are a lot of ways to involve every member of the family, from letting them add to specific rooms to simply including some of their favorites around the house. “We’ve had kids come paint part of the walls in their room with their favorite color to let them feel like they’re part of the process.” However, Sandy ensures that everything comes together in the end. “Don’t worry, we always re-paint.”
Sandra Mahoney, founder of Create Home in Excelsior, MN, has been sought out by clients and followers for her artful, eclectic design and keen ability to create home collections. As a real estate broker, interior designer, and home builder, Sandy loves helping people. For years, she has helped many find and design their homes.
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.
“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:

Let’s face it, enlarged prostates are no fun. The thought of addressing them with traditional treatments often makes men delay getting the care they need. The board certified interventional radiologists at CORA have another option—Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE). This is a minimally-invasive procedure making it a more preferable alternative to treat enlarged prostate symptoms. See how PAE can make a huge difference in your life.
