With the arrival of the New Year, like many of us, I’m reflecting on the past year with gratitude and looking ahead with hope for what lies before us. I’m still working on my New Year resolutions, but even with the ideas of what they might be, it energizes me to move forward toward the possibilities of the future. We kick off the New Year with this, our wellness issue—filled with ways to help us become our best selves in 2023. With winter’s arrival, it’s sometimes hard to keep up with your outdoor fitness routine. Our story on skijoring in this issue offers fun new opportunities for you and your dog to get out and enjoy the snow with this exhilarating sport. If you can, give it a try, or, watch upcoming mushing and skijoring events in our Central Oregon playground to cheer them on. We talked with Rebecca Dorsey, owner of Bend’s NW Mind-Body Wellness and a family and psychiatric nurse practitioner, about their new approach to healthcare. They have created a way to provide both primary and mental healthcare in one location to provide whole person care. Knowing that many of us will escape to a warm vacation on the beach this winter, we spoke with Radiant Waxing about self-care to show off healthy skin when we shed layers of clothing. As a woman-owned local business, they strive to boost self confidence offering smooth skin and tailored brows in a chic, modern boutique with the motto, “We wax EVERY BODY.” Finally, check out our story on the benefits of plant based eating. We’ve included tips to get started as well as local sources for buying healthy food and experiencing tasty plant based meals at some of our favorite restaurants. We are so grateful for all who contributed to Bend Lifestyle over the past year, and those who will be part of our community in the coming year. Here’s wishing you a New Year filled with new opportunities, joy and wellness!

NW Mind-Body Wellness Takes New Approach to Healthcare
ARTICLE BY JULIE E. FURNAS

When seeking medical attention for physical ailments such as chronic pain, heart disease or auto immune issues, it’s rare to consider making mental wellness a priority alongside physical care. NW Mind-Body Wellness in Bend seeks to change the way people receive healthcare by caring for the whole person, both mind and body. Wellness is a holistic philosophy, and the practice of an active lifestyle that doesn't wait for something to go wrong before doing something about it. Wellness goes beyond the absence of symptoms and works toward achieving the highest potential and prevention of future health problems. Rebecca Dorsey, owner of NW Mind-Body Wellness, is a family and psychiatric nurse practitioner with experience in primary care, inpatient and internal medicine. For years Dorsey found it challenging and frustrating that when she worked exclusively in one area such as primary healthcare, mental healthcare was ignored or not well served. The same was true working in mental healthcare – primary healthcare for her patients was often missing. “This causes patients to be out of balance with the entirety of care that was needed,” explains Dorsey. Dorsey has a deep belief that physical and mental health should not be treated separately and that connected care is the best way to treat a patient. When Dorsey landed in Oregon seven years ago, she states, “My goal was to create a place where patients could access appropriate primary and mental healthcare cohesively at one location.” In 2021, Dorsey acquired Roots Family Medicine. “This allowed us to fully integrate mental health into an existing primary care office and become what is now the Bend location of NW Mind-Body Wellness,”
says Dorsey. The first location for NW Mind-Body Wellness originated in Portland in 2017 as a community and home-based practice only. The practice is unique in that it provides ‘person-centered’ healthcare. The providers have the knowledge and understanding that mental health affects the physical body in so many ways and that only a specialist can create a custom wellness plan for each patient. Each provider at NW Mind-Body Wellness has a different background and various discipline, which allows them to provide educated, safe, and unbiased healthcare to all their patients. NW Mind-Body Wellness provides care to individuals of all ages and offers psychiatric medication management, primary care services, individual and group therapy. Many of the patients come to the facility after having had a negative experience with past healthcare and who really want to achieve the best for their physical and mental wellbeing. “Here at NW Mind- Body Wellness, we are passionate about helping people discover and maintain the best version of themselves and we aim to change the way people receive and seek healthcare - one individual at a time,” Dorsey notes.
KEEPING IT LOCAL Because Oregon allows nurse practitioners ‘full practice autonomy’, the state makes it a welcoming place to have a wellness practice. Beautiful, outdoor areas also provide many different opportunities for both providers and patients to explore options for a healthy lifestyle with activities like bike riding, hiking and river activities. RADIANT SKIN YEAR ROUND GET SET TO HIT THE BEACH FOR A WINTER GETAWAY— SELF CARE BEFORE YOU GO
Jessica Carson (left) and Jen Barnett (right) are long-time friends and owners of Radiant Waxing in Bend.

Jen Barnett and Jessica Carson, owners of the Radiant Waxing franchise in Bend, were neighbors in Eugene who became friends when their sons started playing sports together. As then stay-at-home moms who enjoyed their selfcare routines, they decided to open a business in the self-care industry. “When our guests walk in the door, we want a comfortable, professional, yet warm environment, especially because of the intimacy of what we do,” says Barnett. “We have an incredible team who creates an atmosphere that allows our guests to feel welcome and know they are our top priority while we provide their services.” One of these team members, Danielle Thompson, who is also the manager of the salon, has been an aesthetician for almost 15 years. “Knowing that you are there for clients, and helping someone feel pretty and self-confident, is a beautiful thing,” she remarks. While waxing is popular in the warmer months, she encourages her clients to keep it up all year round. “When you wax regularly, about every four to six weeks, the hair gets finer and the follicles get smaller, which makes the sessions easier and more comfortable,” notes Thompson. “The spa also has table warmers, so clients don’t have to be worried about being cold.” This winter, if you’re planning a getaway to a warmer climate, Danielle suggests a self-care visit for waxing to show off healthy skin as you shed layers of clothing.
“ WA X I N G D E F I N I T E LY HE LPS LE SSE N COM MON SKIN ISSUES, SO IT’S MORE THAN JUST H A I R R E M OVA L — I T ’ S A WHOLE SKIN CARE P R O G R A M A S W E L L .” — DANIELLE THOMPSON, R AD IANT WA XING MANAG E R AND LICENSED AESTHETICIAN
Waxing can also help avoid some common skin issues. “After waxing, you need to properly exfoliate and hydrate the skin so that hair can grow back evenly and not cause any ingrown hairs,” Thompson explains. “With shaving, people can get razor burn, ingrown hairs and folliculitis, and can end up with abscesses and bacteria if they aren’t grooming properly. Waxing definitely helps lessen those things, so it's more than just hair removal — it's a whole skin care program as well.” For women, the most frequently requested spot for waxing is the bikini area, but many also do their underarms and at least the bottom halves of their legs. For men, the chest and back areas are the most commonly requested spots for hair removal. Eyebrow grooming is also popular for both genders now. The wax used at Radiant Waxing was developed by an aesthetician and is very high quality. “It’s a strip wax that’s been formulated in a way that doesn't stick to skin and is not messy,” notes Thompson. “It's a really beautiful high quality wax that has properties in it to help calm the skin and lessen the inflammation that can sometimes be caused by waxing.” Thompson explains that Radiant Waxing’s waxologists are thoroughly trained on techniques and very professional. The patterns for each body area used by Radiant Waxing also make the process fast and easy. “We specialize in speed waxing, using patterns,” says Thompson. “We can get our services done fast so people can get in and out.” RadiantWaxing.com/Or-Bend

fitness your dog SKIJORING OFFERS WINTER
OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU AND
Winter can present challenges when it comes to staying active, for both you and your dog. Although mushing sports are often thought of as requiring a large sled dog team and expensive equipment, mushing is any sport powered by a dog or dogs, pulling a person or a rig of some sort. Other mushing sports include bikejoring, urban mushing, dog scootering, canicross and skijoring. If you know how to ski, or want to learn, and have a dog that loves to pull and needs a job, you might both enjoy the sport of skijoring. Thought to have originated in Scandinavian countries hundreds of years ago, skijoring is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring, and literally means “ski driving.” In skijoring, one or two dogs in harness pull a cross-country skier wearing a belt connected by a towline. It is thought that people long ago used skijoring as a form of winter transportation. Historically a person on skis was pulled by reindeer, a horse, one to three dogs or even a snowmobile. “The beauty of skijoring is the relationship between you and your dog,” explains Dina McClure, a founding member of Pacific Sled Dog & Skijor Association (PSDSA). “Your dog experiences as much reward in pulling and being out on the trail as you do in knowing the effort in training has made you a team.” CONTINUED >

In 1985 while living in Alaska, McClure watched her first Iditarod in Anchorage. “That experience changed me; I was hooked,” recalls McClure. Since that time, McClure has participated in mushing sports from skijoring to running sled dog teams. According to McClure, one thing that draws people to skijoring is that it is similar to running a sled dog team but without the high costs and responsibilities of maintaining a kennel of dogs. Another appeal is the minimal equipment required. To get started, you need a pair of skis, boots, poles, a belt for the skier (at least 3 inches wide), a towrope (7-12 feet long with a quick release snap on the end that connects to the skier’s belt) and a harness for your dog. For dogs with sensitive feet, or when the snow conditions warrant, dog booties are recommended. McClure moved to Central Oregon in the 1990’s and founded the Cascade Skijoring Alliance (CSA). She also taught a community education class for a few years at COCC, “Introduction to Skijoring.” In 2007 McClure’s CSA merged with the Southern Oregon Sled Dog Club to create PSDSA. Most mushers and skijorers begin training with their dogs for the winter season in October or November. PSDSA’s first event of the season is their November Dryland Mushing Event. “In the fall, our activities are on land using wheeled rigs for the dogs to pull,” notes Karen Yeargain, also a founding member of PSDSA and owner of Tumnatki Siberians. “Some of us use quads for the larger teams, but many of us also use dog scooters for 1-4 dogs; this is the pre-snow version of skijoring and is a way to condition the dogs as well as work on their command training. Dog scootering is, in itself, a very popular form of running dogs and really lends itself well to folks with just a few dogs.”

“The beauty of skijoring is the relationship between you and your dog.” —DINA MCCLURE, FOUNDING MEMBER OF PSDSA AND LONGTIME MUSHER
If you are interested in skijoring, there are a few things to know before you start. First of all, it helps to have some experience skiing, even downhill. “Knowing balance on skis is a great advantage since the dog will require training,” says McClure. “Skijoring will come together sooner if the dog doesn’t have to stop frequently for your falls, so if you have no skiing experience, I highly recommend you take Nordic ski lessons prior to training your dog.” For your dog, the first step is to get them fitted for a harness. Then, before you get on skis, a bike or scooter, begin with leash training on a trail and do some positive reinforcement training. “You need to train your dog with the correct commands,” explains McClure. “Gee is right, Haw is left. You want to use the universal mushing language in training.” If you have skiing experience and your dog has a harness, training your dog to pull is the next step. Although Northern breeds such as Huskies and Malamutes are often used in mushing sports, other breeds can also be suitable as pulling is a natural instinct for most dogs. “You need a medium build or larger, enthusiastic, healthy dog with energy who can be trained to pull down a trail with a skier following behind,” says McClure. “We recommend your dog have basic obedience training and be at least eight months to a year old before they start ‘working’ due to muscle and bone development.” To ensure success in training and starting a new sport, it’s important to make sure you and your dog are in the best health possible. “The best thing a dog owner can do is maintain a healthy weight and muscle mass on their pet,” states Kimberly McCreedy, DVM and PSDSA volunteer secretary and veterinarian on hand at events. “Work with your veterinarian to determine what that looks like for your dog. High quality food and adequate
hydration are essential.” Training and building up endurance is also important for the skier and dog. Summer hikes and fall dryland training events are perfect opportunities to stay in shape for winter. McCreedy served as a veterinarian technician for the Iditarod from 2010-2013 and became a veterinarian for the race in 2016. “This sport comprises a unique opportunity for dog owners to satisfy the needs of the breed that they own,” remarks McCreedy. “When you watch a dog get hooked up to a gangline with a dog sled team or a towline for skijoring, the excitement is palpable. The dogs start singing their song in anticipation of the fun they are about to have. Full chills run through my body and I often find myself wiping away tears over the joy the dogs emanate. I love that the mushers generally have the same goal as I do as a veterinarian: they want the absolute best for their dogs.” If you find yourself drawn to the sport of skijoring or interested in other mushing sports, follow the advice of seasoned mushers and seek them out. “If you have questions, the best place to start is to join a local sled dog club and start attending their meetings and events. Members love to share their knowledge, advice and tips,” says PSDSA President and longtime musher Selina Witt. “Really, you just have to get out and experience it for yourself, even if it’s just coming to watch an event. There is no better way to learn.” The first weekend of March PSDSA hosts their annual Bachelor Butte Dog Derby at Wanoga Snow Park near Bend. According to the PSDSA website, this somewhat nostalgic event is a “return to racing sled dogs in the Cascade Mountains and an opportunity to experience the splendor of the Cascades and contest one’s dog team on world class terrain.” Skijoring is part of this event. Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.
You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! PLANT BASED EATING IS MORE OF A LIFESTYLE THAN A DIET. YOU ARE SIMPLY EATING MORE FOODS THAT ARE CLOSER TO THEIR HARVESTED STATE WITH MINIMAL PROCESSING.
GETTING STARTED WITH PLANT BASED EATING AND LOCAL SOURCES Embarking on a new journey with food doesn’t have to be overwhelming. If you have decided to introduce more plant derived foods into your diet, no matter the reason, we have included some local sources for the freshest ingredients. And, if you prefer to first experience delicious plant based recipes before preparing them on your own, this list also features some local establishments that cater to this healthy lifestyle choice. • Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. Increase consumption of plants foods you already like. These small changes will make it easier stick to your new choices. • Plant based eating does not have to be boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. • Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. • Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. More colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. • If you do not eat any animal products at all, you should consult a dietician or medical professional regarding your body’s need for Vitamin B12 and iron. B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. —Claudia Martin-Ayoade is a Registered Dietitian, Writer and Public Speaker who is passionate about educating people on nutrition and addressing food insecurity.

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.
SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear.
Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!
