September is always bittersweet for me—as we reluctantly see our lazy sum mer days slip away, we begin to feel energized for the quicker pace as we transition to Fall. With the new season, Bend Lifestyle also celebrates a new beginning as we welcome our new editor, Lynette Confer. Lynette brings a wealth of experience and talent to her new role and we are very excited to have her join our team!    With Autumn’s arrival, we dedicate this issue to Style. The following pages are packed with fall fashion, spotlighting styles from local boutique Lost Season Supply. Owner Melissa Atillo shares her story and offers tips on the latest Fall trends. ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Jenny and Greg Lanker, owners of Area Rug Connection

Jenny also brings in goods from markets she visits around the United States, and from other sellers as well. “We have vendors who are from Afghanistan and India who literally load up their trucks and vans with their handmade high-end merchandise and come into our showroom. They spread it all out and we just buy it off the floor.”

Freshening up your space doesn’t have to be com plicated or time consuming. Something as simple as a beautiful new rug combined with a unique piece of furniture or artwork can dramatically change the look and feel of any room. “I hear over and over from customers about how their new rug just changed their whole house,” says Jenny Lanker, co-owner, along with husband Greg, of Area Rug Connection. “They often come back and get another one because it just made such an Althoughimpact.”thestore has been in Bend for more than 20 years, Jenny and Greg bought it last year and have been busy expanding the variety of rugs and merchandise offered. “We have all price levels so everyone can feel comfortable here,” she says. “We have machine-made reasonably-priced rugs, but then we also have really high-end wool handmade rugs from Afghanistan, Nepal, Morocco, India, and Turkey. It's quite an assortment of traditional and modern designs.”

15| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BENDSEPTEMBER 2022

The furniture, throw pillows, mirrors and artwork are then paired with different rugs throughout the space so customers can see how well they may work with the col ors and style of a particular rug. Best of all, everything on the floor is for sale, including gift items such as wine glasses and cutting boards. Customers can even take rugs and other items home for a few days to see how they fit in a space. Inspiration starts at the ground level.

Melissa Atillo has loved fashion since she was a child, and perhaps it was in her DNA. “I grew up with design,” she says. Her grandfather pioneered crafting rattan in the Philippines. Her father continued the legacy in design and production of rattan, including that of the peacock chair made popular in the '70s. Melissa continued to work with her father as the company’s creative director. LOOKS FROM LOST SEASON SUPPLY BEND

jewelry—plus it features sterling silver from Navajo makers, of which she enjoys honoring their craftsman ship and tradition. With its neighborhood feel, Lost Season Supply is a place she hopes visitors can, “Shop in calm,” she says. For Fall, Melissa likes to mix high-fashion pieces with casual items, to achieve a quirky expression of personal style. She sees trends this season of faux leather, oversized separates, matching sets, and mono chromatic looks. She encourages people to make bold choices and take chances with what they wear. Ever the creative, Melissa is also a stylist and a member of a band, The Color Study in Bend. She enjoys all things fashion. “It’s supposed to be fun,” she says. “I believe fashion is for everybody." LostSeason.Co Photos this page: Cheryl Parton

A graduate of the product development and design program at the Fashion Institute of Design, Los Angeles, she has worked in all aspects of the fashion industry, from production on the fabric-cutting floor to the design of her own line. She has an eye for trends and a love for the way clothing is an expression of personality. Having explored much of the United States, she says, “The style I found here in Central Oregon is a mild Western look, which I find very fashionable.” With an inheritance of an entrepreneurial spirit, Melissa and her husband moved to Bend in 2013 and founded Lost Season Supply, a clothing and gift store that celebrates its 7th year this month. The boutique, located on a section of tree-lined NW Colorado Avenue, carries small labels, sustainable brands and local artisan Melissa Atillo, owner/stylist at Lost Season Supply. Melissa wears a traditional Filipino “Tambourine” necklace made of solid 24k gold, and passed down from her grandmother. Lost Season Supply carries small labels, sustainable brands and a varied collection of styles. Photographs in the shop pay homage to strong women, including her mother (seated, center of the trio).

Breast Cancer Waits for Nothing. Neither should you. At Central Oregon Radiology we know a lot has changed over the past few years. If you’re a woman over 40, one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for a yearly mammogram. One in eight women in the US will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Studies show three out of four new breast cancer patients have no known contributing risk factors. FURNAS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTINNA PATIENCE PHOTOGRAPHY 'Friends' Commit Years to Serving Our Youth

Since its inception 28 years ago, non-profit Friends of the Children Central Oregon (FOTCCO) has been providing long-term professional mentoring services to local youth. FOTCCO is the only program of its kind in the country, employing full-time, salaried mentors ("Friends") to partner with children who have expe rienced significant trauma, serving those who come from generations of systemic oppression, neglect and poverty. Each child is paired with a Friend who pro vides 1:1 support for three-four hours every week for 12+ years, no matter what. FOTCCO works inside and outside of schools, partnering closely with families, educators and social services. Their services were especially needed during the pandemic when school ing was virtual and basic resources were scarce. FOTCCO was founded by Duncan Campbell, who himself had experienced a poor home life and neglect. Campbell had four pivotal experiences with people who gave him hope and shaped the person he is today. "All of these peo ple took time to get to know me. They instilled belief in me. They saw something in me, invested time in me, and they cared about me. That was all I needed,” says Campbell.  BY JULIE E.

According to current statistics, youth in Central Oregon experience higher rates of “Adverse Childhood Experiences” over state averages, includ ing child abuse, a lack of health coverage and access, homelessness, food insecurity and chronic absentee ism. FOTCCO currently serves 44 youth and members of their households, totaling 250 people, living in Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson Counties. “As one can imagine, technology access, the availability of caregiver support, and a multitude of barriers made it challenging for many of our youth to remain engaged in virtual learning throughout the height of the pan demic. As a result, there are signs that our youth have fallen further behind pre-pandemic expectations in core academic subjects such as reading. This experi ence has highlighted the need to integrate structured educational support into our ongoing mentorship model,” says Rachel Cardwell, Executive Director of Friends of the Children Central Oregon.
