I’d like to begin this message by expressing my heartfelt gratitude to Editor Cheryl Parton, who is pictured with me in the photo above. Not just for her contributions to this issue, but for the past four years Cheryl has been the guiding force for our magazine’s content each month. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside her, and will greatly miss her as she moves on to new opportunities. Thank you, Cheryl, for your dedication, creativity, words, and amazing insight throughout the years. The dog days of summer are upon us, and so in that spirit we bring you our August Kids and Pets issue. As the season winds down, I hope you’re able to pack in a few more adventures, listen to a few more concerts, and soak up the sunshine while you can. On the following pages, we tried to bring you a mix of education and inspiration. First, we introduce you to young entrepreneur Lukas Sickler, a talented surfboard shaper who launched his own brand, LS Surfboards. Read how he is shaping his future, one board at a time. This issue is also packed with fun ideas for planning a children’s birthday party. Why not take a page from a beloved children’s book and create a party theme around it? In our case, we brought the 1963 Maurice Sendak classic “Where the Wild Things Are” to life as inspiration for a playful party theme on a summer afternoon. Then, be sure to read “Happy and Healthy Pets” to better understand our post-pandemic pets. Our fur babies certainly enjoyed having us spend more time at home the past two years, and now with many going back to the workplace, they have to adjust to more time alone. We talked with Dr. Brooke Jacoby of Elevate Pet Wellness Center about how they are treating anxiety in pets with integrative care and behavior consultations. Lastly, be sure to check out a few dog-centric favorite things. You and your dog will be ready to hit the trail, or settle in to relax on a languid afternoon. As sure as water flows, it was serendipity when Lukas Sickler set out on the Bend Whitewater Park wave one day in April 2020. The 17-year-old Summit High School senior was already an accomplished tennis player and ski racer, and surfing was new to him. So was the sight of a fiberglass shortboard at the wave, ridden by a visitor from Hawaii. Predictably, impact on the rocks beneath the wave’s shallow depth quickly wrecked the fragile fin boxes. Lukas intercepted the parts and brought them back to a home shop where his older brother, Thomas, already kept a few tools of a board shaper’s trade. “We ripped off the glass and I started shaping the foam,” Sickler describes. He hasn’t stopped. Since then, Lukas has found his place as a maker: he shapes surfboards, selling them under the moniker LS Surfboards. “My first board was for me, and I still love that little thing,” he says. But it was what he could do with that first board that opened doors to making boards for others. The athlete could rip up a wave on its asymmetrical shape—bringing it to life. Soon, local surfers said, “I want what he’s got.” Sickler brings a larger world perspective to his work, having been born in Santiago, Chile and residing in Bend since 2009. He was an early entrepreneur. Childhood days often consisted of questions he and his brother asked to start the day: “What can we make?”; “Should we set up another lemonade stand?”; “Can we build a go cart?”. His approach to shaping has a sense of curiosity more in line to that of a sculptor than a kit shaper using a template. “I go with a flow more than follow pencil lines,” he says. He starts with an EPS or poly-foam surfboard blank, slowly building the form, then imagining its function: rail, contours and volume follow as he intuits the final product. He glasses boards in his home-based shop, or sends them to partners for custom orders.

“His approach to shaping has a sense of curiosity more in line to that of a sculptor than a kit shaper using a template.” Future plans include continuing to learn and enjoy the process, sell boards, and be an ambassador for the LS Surfboards brand. He has surfed waves in South America, with Chilean family members as some of his biggest fans. It’s not always the equipment that makes an athlete, but in the case of Lukas Sickler, the line is blurred between rider and board. When a product is made with soul, it’s no wonder human energy responds when it meets a wave—board and rider combine in a perfect flow.

Observe a pet’s eyes as it sees you with leash in hand to confirm that, yes, they feel emotions. According to researchers, the developmental level of a dog's emotions is equivalent to that of a two- or two-and-a-half-year-old child. While their emotions may be less complex than those found in human adults, pets can still experience anxiety, says Dr. Carlo Siracusa at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, as explained in the book "Do Dogs Feel Sadness?" by Kate Hughes. Where human adults may feel down as a result of ruminating about their failures or imperfections, dogs can experience anxiety for a variety of other reasons. “Anxiety

manifests in many different ways and separation anxiety is increasingly more common in our pets,” according to Dr. Brooke Jacoby, owner and veterinarian at Elevate Pet Wellness Center in Bend. During the past two years of the pandemic, many pet parents spent more time with their pets at home than before. A possibility for an increase in anxiety she notes, is the shift back to the workplace. “Pets that typically had their human with them most of the day, now have to figure out how to adjust to being alone for longer periods of time,” she says. A lack of exercise can also be a cause. It’s important to find out how much and what types of exercise are

appropriate for your dog's breed and age, and to make sure your dog regularly gets the exercise it needs. Certain medical conditions may also lead to changes in a pet’s mood so a shift in behavior is reason to schedule a veterinary exam. Fortunately, there are new models for the holistic treatment of pets. We spoke to Dr. Jacoby about the way Elevate Pet Wellness Center is changing the model for treatment in Central Oregon using Integrative Veterinary Care.

Bend Lifestyle: How do you treat anxiety in dogs? Dr. Jacoby: “Like with most conditions, there is no ‘one size fits all.’” Emotional and behavioral health has many facets including supporting their body through nutrition, appropriate supplements and in

Whether seeking philosophical guidance or deciding what’s for dinner, recipes for life can be found in literature. We learn from great minds that came before us, and that’s true when planning a birthday party. Take a page from classical children’s books to find themes that combine playfulness, colorful illustration and words to inspire food, décor and games that will tickle the fancy of youthful guests, with a central activity of reading aloud. Published in 1963, “Where the Wild Things Are” is one of the most recognizable children's picture books of all time. Writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak created a universal story about mastering fears. Dressed in his wolf costume, and sent to his room for creating havoc at home, young Max travels to an island of Wild Things where he becomes king. “WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE” BY MAURICE SENDAK As a costume party, have guests dress as their favorite wild thing. A crown-making activity allows everyone to be King (or Queen) for a day. GAME: Wild Rumpus Dance Party. A twist on the Freeze Dance, guests dance and prance freely until the music stops. An extra step means that player is out. A winner is the last “beast” to stand still after multiple rounds of play.

“CURIOUS GEORGE” BY MARGRET AND H. A. REY Gather a barrel of monkeys, plus your favorite Man in the Yellow Hat, for a party where guests can go bananas. George always seems to wander, so try a scavenger hunt that meanders from clue to clue. Banana cupcakes, banana bread, and a tower of bananas add a healthy touch to the dessert table. GAME: Monkey in the Middle. Create a circle with one guest in the middle. Toss a ball, or soft monkey toy, across the circle without the monkey in the middle catching it.

“DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!” BY MO WILLEMS Though an unlikely party host, pigeon—with his wide-eyed enthusiasm—sets a party tone. Eat “bird seed” trail mix and hot dogs (inspired by another Willems title, “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!”). Printable images of Pigeon lend themselves to thematic and whimsical decorations. GAME: Red Light, Green Light. With guests as “bus drivers,” they make their way to the station/finish line with a twist on this classic party game.

Servings: 6 2 lbs. Boneless Chicken Breast 1 Tbs. Goya Adobo Seasoning 1 Packet Goya Sazón Seasoning 1 Tbs. Avocado Oil 1 Pinch, Salt or Pepper to taste 1 Tbs. Orange Juice 2 Tbs. Garlic, minced 1 Tbs. Oregano 1 tsp. Garlic Powder 4 Tbs. Butter, melted 1 Orange, 1 Lime 1. Cut chicken into smaller pieces, and place into a large mixing bowl. Add adobo, Sazón spice, oil, salt and pepper, oregano, orange juice, and minced garlic. Mix well until all chicken pieces are coated. Cover and marinate in refrigerator for a minimum of two-three hours, or overnight for more flavor. 2. If using wood skewers, soak them in water for one hour prior to grilling. Then, place chicken on wooden or metal skewers. 3. Bring grill to medium heat. Slice orange and lime into quarters, sprinkle with salt, and grill until fine marks appear (three-four minutes). Remove and let cool. In a small bowl, melt butter and garlic powder. 4. Grill skewers for about 10 minutes (to 165º F) rotating every three minutes and basting with garlic butter. Remove from heat, squeeze the fruit over the skewers, and serve.
