Before you read this, take off all your clothes. Now look in the mirror for signs of melanoma/skin cancer. Notice any changes in the shape or color of your moles or freckles? Do you have any new blemishes that are larger than 1/4-inch, varied in color, irregular or asymmetrical in shape? If so, you may have melanoma or another form of skin cancer and you should see a dermatologist. Left alone, melanoma will spread throughout your body and eventually kill you. Melanoma can be successfully cured if caught early. Okay, you can put your clothes back on now.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Cheers to Strong Women in Our Lives Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the special women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities women possess is having confidence in themselves while at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women to bring out the greatness in them, too. In this Women’s Issue, we share the story of Sheryl Wright’s “Dare to Detour,” an entrepreneurial venture that creates a retreat experience for women to step out of their daily experiences and discover their true selves. We’ve also included a Mother’s Day Brunch menu of simple and delicious recipes so you’ll be all set to celebrate special women in your life at home. If settling into a quiet place is more your speed, Cassie Clemens, owner of Roundabout Books offers a short list of books with strong women at their centers. May is also Melanoma Awareness Month, so we’ve included tips for preventing skin cancer, and choosing the right products for skin protection from Gerald Peters Jr., MD, FAAD, FACMS of Peters Dermatology Center. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it. Thank you for reading the stories of our community and for supporting our advertising partners when you buy local.

A RETREAT EXPERIENCE BRINGS WOMEN TOGETHER TO DISCOVER THEIR TRUE SELVES

Detour

When Sheryl Wright approached the moment her children would leave home for college, a lifetime of confronting challenges then multiplied—she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Detours had always intrigued Sheryl, who after living in Oregon since she was 12 moved to New York City after college on a detour to herself. “Dares were the ways I did the hard things,” she says. “If there was a challenge, I would dare myself to move through it.” From her life experiences, she created Dare to Detour, a movement of women daring themselves to step out of their day-to-day experiences, release the past and “rediscover who they truly are.” The week-long adventure retreats or daylong experiences are created for women to take time to rediscover their identities and move forward in their lives with intention. They are an opportunity to recharge and reconnect with other like-minded women, then leave the experience with a capacity to lead with strength.

Wright is based in Bozeman, Montana where she leads the Dare to Detour five- or seven-day retreat held each fall at the Nine Quarter Circle Ranch in southwest Montana, adjacent to the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. The program is couched in a spirit of guided connection and community to help women realize their strengths, resilience, and potential. “My desire is to do more daylong experiences,” says Sheryl. A key to the Dare to Detour movement is its mission to be not only enriching but greater accessible to the program, she says. Having maintained connections in Central Oregon from her years attending Oregon State University, it was a natural fit to bring a full-day version of the retreat here. For women in Bend, a Daylong Detour takes place at Pronghorn Resort with a curated mix of key components of the longer retreat, such as meditation, movement, self-reflection, and creative practice along with doses of adventure and nature. “The energy in Bend is so ‘high vibe,’ she says. “Women drop into the work in a unique way.” As the most recent group gathered in Pronghorn’s Chanterelle Room, their retreat day began by sharing food and introductions. Movement was led by Lynn Herbert of Soul in Motion, Bend. The group was guided into a reflective space through readings, prompts, and poetry from the duo of Sheryl and Karen Lum of Lum Consulting. The work of the morning segued into a sensory meditation walk led by Jennifer Pahl of Twist Yoga, Portland, then segued to an impromptu dance party that set the tone for creative work. Sara Fraser, candlemaker and founder of The Fraser Collection in Bend, taught the art of candle making, with each participant perfecting their own signature scent. The evening concluded with live music as the sun set across the High Desert. For Sheryl Wright and the women who dared to detour for this day, being vulnerable to change allowed each to find direction back to their true selves. Care for Your Skin MAY IS MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH, BUT BARRIERS PROTECT SKIN ALL YEAR ROUND

May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and although melanoma is the skin cancer most people are aware of, it’s not the only deadly one. “Squamous-cell carcinoma kills more people now in this country than melanoma and basal cell carcinoma,” says Dr. Gerald Peters of Peters Dermatology Center in Bend. “Squamous cell and basal cell are the two most common non-melanoma skin cancers and they cause a lot of damage.” When you’re protecting yourself against melanoma, you’re also protecting yourself against these non-melanoma skin cancers. Here, Dr. Peters gives tips for prevention:

TIMING AND AVOIDANCE The midday sun is strong, so it’s better to be out earlier or later in the day.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING There are some excellent UPF [Ultraviolet Protection Factor] fabrics available today. Look for hats and sunglasses with UV protection in the 99% range.

TOPICAL COVERAGE Select products that have physical filters, agents or blockers such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide. For adequate protection, find products that contain 5% or more of those ingredients. Don’t forget to protect your lips as well.

Dr. Peters says he’s been encouraging patients to move away from chemical blockers. “They convert ultraviolet into infrared energy, but when you use a physical blocker it reflects the sun off the skin. They also work immediately, not 20 minutes after application.” Peters Dermatology Center carries a wide range of high-quality, effective products such as EltaMD®, TIZO, and ALASTIN Skincare®. People often tune out when you speak of statistics, he says, but one thing many do care about is the way they look. “Photoaging makes you look old before your time because those ultraviolet rays destroy the elastic fibers in your skin.” To find out more about how to protect your skin and schedule a skin cancer screening, visit PetersDerm.com
