ART WITH A HEART FOR THE PLANET ALISA LOONEY USES ENAMEL TO TELL STORIES ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

The palette of an enamel artist includes more than colorful paints. Enamel is a medium grounded by the earth, made of compounds like flint, sand, soda or potash. For Alisa Looney, materials such as steel and mica keep her further rooted and inspired to tell the story of caring for the planet. Alisa fell in love with metal arts as a silversmith in her early years, received a BFA in Design, and began welding in 1998. Enamel, a process by which powdered glass is fused to a metal substrate at high heat, was a way to express the colors and textures of the natural world. The process itself begins with raw materials and requires patience and layering. As her work evolved, so did her observations about the changing climate and a recognition that her work could have a higher purpose to tell the story of the planet. Enamel is an especially adaptable storytelling medium. The softness of the fusing lead-free vitreous

glass flows atop steel masks and sculptures in a way similar to the way water flows over dense rock of the Deschutes River. Enamel also allows Looney to merge sculptural design with narrative, and her most recent work explores the human connection to nature and to each other. “I am interested in how we as humans are coping with the environmental and cultural challenges we are facing,” she says. “I am particularly interested in wild free-flowing rivers, the source of all life, and planting trees that provide clean air to breathe.” Her explorations of art, self, and environment led her to create the work “Healing Tree,” inspired by TreeSisters, a UK-based social change and reforestation charity with a mission to plant millions of trees in the tropics to absorb carbon and combat climate change. To date, they have planted more than 22 million trees. Alisa’s other sculptures each hold meaning, including stories about human empowerment and those featuring movement in reference to Alisa’s background as a dancer. She created an ongoing Memory and Gratitude Series to honor life experience through commissioned sculpture. Since 2018, Alisa and her husband, woodblock artist Wade Womack, have made their home south of Sunriver. Their studio called River Art Adventures is a place where they have offered workshops and inspiration to other artists. Today, her work can be found locally at Red Chair Gallery in Bend, and Hood Avenue Art in Sisters, plus in both private and public collections, such as at the Maryhill Museum of Art in Washington. How do you use your art to tell stories? “I shape and fabricate metal into open, flowing form, portraying movement and the expression of life. Beginning with sketches, the 3D form is designed while working with heavy paper, creating a model and adjusting the pattern until I find the right balance. Then it is plasma-cut from steel, ground, hammered into shape, and welded into the final form. I clean and prepare the surface for layers of kiln-fired glass, spraying, drawing, and painting with fine detail, which adds an illustrated story to the sculptural form, creating depth and complexity. I create a wide array of work, ranging from 6- to 8-foot tall powder-coated public sculptures to tabletop enameled sculptures, wall works, and small pieces of jewelry. I tell stories of what it means to be human, how we connect with and care for this earth and all living beings. What are the current influences on your work today? “In the process of making, I seek a wild freedom with purpose. I want to remember the unseen mycelium, the seeds, the pollinators, the water, the birds, the salmon. I strive to give back to earth and be a good steward, to give voice to the earth in the form of images leading to restoration. Climate change is my number one concern. I am interested in ecological and social healing and I am committed to partnering with organizations who work toward these goals. I spend time outside every day I can, observing, drawing, painting, or capturing photos of life and transformation through the seasons. I look for movement and the connection between things growing and changing. I especially find wonder in signs of new life pushing through obstacles, like a baby ponderosa coming up through a rocky lava bed, or signs of life composting, a twisting root slipping into the river, with water swirling, re-absorbing it. I am very interested in capturing movement, a moment in time. I also engage in an expressive art practice each week with two dancers on zoom. We each embody a concept through movement and drawing. This creates a wealth of material to work with. I often portray the body as deeply immersed in nature, as part of the ecosystem. A consistent theme is the human body in relation to trees, roots, and the mycelium network that all life depends on.” What does the intersection between art and environment mean to you? “I have experienced a deep connection to nature from an early age, growing up on the Spokane River, in Northern Idaho. The living world has been a source of both material and subject matter in my art for as long as I can remember, creating a sense of calm strength. The earth needs us now, and I want to do my part. Climate change is moving quickly. The more I study the science, the more urgent it becomes to do everything I can to help mitigate the situation. As an artist, I feel it is my responsibility to communicate messages that inspire care for our planet, to support the planting of trees, and protection of our rivers. In addition to making studio work and commissions, my husband and I both enjoy teaching students to draw outdoors under our grove of Ponderosa Pines and observe reflections in the water. This allows them to connect to nature on a deeper level, and we hope it might also inspire their own vision of protection and care for the earth.”

Music + Fire CAMP VIBES SET THE BEST TONE FOR MUSIC AROUND A FIRE ARTICLE BY GREGG MORRIS
Since the days of cowboys pushing cattle across the range, listening to music by a campfire has helped smooth over a rough day and take the chill out of a cold night. Guitars seem to make the fire a little warmer and the campfire makes the music a little sweeter. That tradition still stands today and its legacy is honored throughout Central Oregon. Music by the Hearth Tucked in the middle of the Deschutes National Forest, The Suttle Lodge & Boathouse hosts their Fireside Music Series most Thursdays, from October through May. Music lovers drive 14 miles northeast of Sisters, Oregon to listen to musicians from across the region perform by the fireside hearth inside the Skip Bar & Restaurant. The Suttle Lodge & Boathouse includes a large timber-framed lodge, lakeside cabins, camp cabins, and boathouse situated on Suttle Lake. Warm weather fun includes boating, fishing, hiking, and biking, while winters host skiing and snowshoeing. But each fall through spring, the Fireside Music Series invites guests from all over Oregon to stargaze, enjoy a drink and their brand of “cascadian cuisine,” and of course, listen to quality musicianship in a cozy atmosphere. The 2022 series ends with guitarist Marissa Anderson, who is re-imagining the landscape of
American music through blues, jazz, gospel and country music. Reservations are required and ticket prices do vary. Guests staying the night in a cabin or room at the lodge can enjoy the music for free. TheSuttleLodge.com Music by the Campfire Just east of Downtown Bend, the Campfire Hotel is a newly-renovated, 100room boutique hotel with a courtyard made for intimate music performances. Anchored by a huge gas-powered fire pit, the Campfire Hotel showcases musicians every Thursday throughout the year. Framing the performance area is a heated pool, hot tub, the Canteen Bar, and a 10-foot tall wood camp chair. “We’re bringing artists from around Central Oregon and around the world to the Campfire for intimate acoustic performances,” says Stacy Koff of 4 Peaks Presents. “It’s really a warm and welcoming vibe for performers and audiences alike.” 4 Peaks Presents books local, regional, and world-touring artists to perform their music directly to the fans sitting near the cozy fire pit. Upcoming events include the Santa Cruz rock band Coffis Brothers, local Americana guitarist Bill Powers, and Brazilian multi-instrumentalist musician Gustavo Fofao. extends the music tradition by including playable instruments from Dean or Breedlove Guitars that are found in each room. “In my opinion, the setting, the lighting, and the big fire make Campfire Hotel different than other venues in town,” says Powers, whose band Honey Don’t just released its third album Threadbare. “It’s relaxed and even though folks are visiting, it feels intimate.” Powers loves the campfire experience so much that he is hosting some performances around the fire at his house in West Bend. Like a lot of Central Oregon musicians, he honed his skills picking bluegrass tunes under the moon in late-night, open-air jams. DISCOVER THE FLAVOR PROFILE OF BUTTER CHICKEN CHICKEN • • • •
1 lb. Chicken cut into 1-inch squares 1 tsp. Red chili powder 1 Tbs. Fresh lemon juice ½ tsp. Salt
MARINADE • • • • • • •
1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt 2 tsp. Ginger, freshly grated or ginger paste 2 tsp. Garlic paste ½ tsp. Red chili powder + 1 Tbs. water to form a paste 1 tsp. Garam masala 1 tsp. Salt 2 tsp. Vegetable oil
SAUCE • • • • • • • • • • •
2 Tbs. Butter (plus more for roasting chicken) 4 Green cardamom pods, crushed ½ tsp. Ground mace 1 tsp. Red chili powder 5 Cloves garlic, chopped 1-inch piece of Fresh ginger, minced 12 Medium tomatoes, chopped 1 tsp. Dried fenugreek 1 tsp. Salt 1 Tbs. Honey 3 Tbs. Heavy cream
1.) Stir chicken, one tsp. chili powder, lemon juice, and salt in a bowl. Refrigerate 30 minutes while preparing marinade. Then, combine marinade ingredients and add prepared chicken to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours. 2.) Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt 2-3 Tbs. butter. Place chicken on a baking sheet, roast for 10 minutes. Baste with butter, stir, and bake for 2-3 more minutes. Remove from oven and set aside. 3.) Melt one tablespoon butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add cardamom and mace, and cook several minutes. Stir in chili powder paste. Then add garlic, ginger and tomatoes. Cook 20 minutes over medium heat until tomatoes become pulpy. Strain the mixture and transfer solids to a food processor to blend until smooth. Strain a second time and discard any solids, such as cardamom pods. In a second saucepan, add the remaining one tablespoon butter and melt. Then, slowly add strained sauce. Add fenugreek, salt, honey and cream, then chicken. Serve with rice or naan.

A Survivor Speaks
Voices Hope to Eradicate Human Trafficking Both in Central Oregon and Across the World Andi Buerger, JD, founder of nonprofit Voices Against Trafficking (Voices), has a passion for helping those who have been trafficked. She can well understand their devastating ordeals since she experienced them herself. “My voice as a survivor is important and has some influence, but what if we had more voices?” she says. “That’s the idea behind Voices Against Trafficking.” While Voices is a national and international presence, it’s heavily vested with a regional presence here in Central Oregon since its inception in January 2020. “We’re not political or religious,” says Andi. “We’re a human rights organization focused on getting the best information, the best ideas, and the best strategies out there to combat trafficking in our neighborhoods.” Voices produces and creates free international anti-trafficking forums every quarter, which can be seen on Facebook and YouTube. “We discuss how to divert predators and provide greater awareness, prevention, and education,” she says. Andi also just published a book, Voices Against Trafficking - The Strength of Many Voices Speaking as One as another tool

for awareness, prevention, education and to inspire action. Currently, the nonprofit has a campaign seeking donations to get the book to each member of Congress, every governor, and every attorney general. Another way to help is to visit the Voices Against Trafficking website and click on “Add My Voice.” “Anybody anywhere in the world can add their voice to our roster for free,” says Andi. “We want to get one million names by the end of summer 2023.
