Art gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of the person we don’t see on the surface. When shared with others, art makes us feel something and many times, it resonates with us. Paul Alan Bennett Publishes New Book Sisters artist Paul Alan Bennett recently published a book titled “Pandemic Portraits” consisting of 88 monotype portraits with stories of how the pandemic has affected each of the people portrayed. Bennett's signature style of painting uses a combination of transparent and opaque watercolors to achieve a look resembling the weave of fabric. REDUCE PAIN AND BOOST OVERALL HEALTH WITH COLD-WATER METHODS TO TRY AT HOME
On the canvas of a body’s health, cold-water immersion has made a splash in recent years. The idea is that a brisk dip in cold water triggers the body into a state of regulation to impact your overall health. The practice is far from new, with proponents such as cold water “celebrity” Wim Hof publishing books on the practice and expounding its benefits—from reduced chronic pain and inflammation to better sleep and boosted metabolism and focus. Cold-water immersion (CWI) includes a range of experiences. Athletes frequently dip 10-15 minutes in 50-59°F water after an intense exercise session or competition to reduce muscle pain and soreness, plus accelerate healing. A 2018 study published by the National Institute of Health showed that a two-to-three-minute immersion each day improved energy, mental and physical strength, and blood circulation. The reason? Medical experts explain that cold causes blood vessels in the body to constrict, therefore reducing blood flow to the areas immersed in chilled water. This results in reduced swelling and inflammation. There’s even some evidence that cold-water therapy may stimulate your body’s immune system. In 2016, Dutch researchers published the encouraging results of a study where subjects tried to voluntarily influence their own

immune response by practicing meditation, deep breathing, and CWI techniques. While research continues, and the study attributed success to a combination of approaches, they credited CWI with building up a resistance to stress over time. Wim Hof, an extreme athlete called “The Iceman,” got his nickname by breaking a number of records related to cold exposure including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, and withstanding an ice bath for more than 112 minutes. Wim proposed that contemporary bodies have become accustomed to modern-day comforts, and are therefore no longer used to cold conditions. While his personal feats are dramatic, his own personal study resulted in a method designed for laypersons to gradually expose their bodies to cold, and build up a resistance within weeks. The Wim Hof Method is built on three pillars of breathing, controlled exposure to cold, and commitment. However, CWI can be as simple as starting with graduated warm-to-cold showers each day, taking a longer immersion in the bathtub or a specially designed tub such as The Plunge, bathing in a river, or finding supervised immersion therapy sessions. A few minutes may be all you need, but remember to warm up afterward. Don’t forget, cold water immersion affects blood pressure, heart rate, and circulation, so discuss risks with a doctor before jumping in. The Plunge.com, WimHofMethod.com

POLAR PLUNGE FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS OREGON TAKES PLACE FEBRUARY 5TH AT RIVERBEND PARK Ready to take the plunge in 2022? Cold water may not be enticing, but supporting the community is always a lure. Special Olympics hopes supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities will draw local participants to the Polar Plunge at Riverbend Park, February 5 at 11 a.m. In its 16th year, the Polar Plunge began in Oregon in 2006. By 2020, about 300 participated in the Central Oregon Polar Plunge, raising $50,000. After a hiatus in 2021, the hope is to get 300 people to come out and participate once again. With a goal of a few thousand participants in seven Plunge markets across Oregon, the bar is set high to raise $590,000. The event will add a 5k/10k run this year for the first time, plus an after party with food carts, music and vendors. There will be a warming hut for racers or post-plunge participants. “I love crazy events that are outside of the norm,” says Scott Friesen, director of Special Olympics Oregon. “With how many runs, walks, and rides there are out there raising money for notable causes, I think Polar Plunge really sets Special Olympics apart from the pack. It’s shocking, it’s thrilling, and it’s definitely outside of the comfort zone, but most importantly it brings necessary awareness and dollars to the mission of Special Olympics.” To register, visit SOOR.org. Miguel Edwards began his work as a sculptor of steel and glass in 2004. Originally from New Mexico, he came to Bend in 2018 from Seattle where he started his career as a photographer. Today his sculpture can be found in galleries, private homes and in public spaces. He created Hope Rising, the cauldron for the Opening Ceremony of the 50th anniversary Special Olympics in 2018. Most recently, his largest public sculpture to date, El Sol: Elevate was placed in the Seattle Center district of downtown Seattle.

Packy and Leslie Deenihan purchased the brewery in 2016 and immediately put their minds to expansion. They bought the lot next door and created a year-round hangout spot; perfect for enjoying a Trade War Export Stout under a shade tree in summer’s warmth or by the fire pit in winter’s chill. In May of 2021, Bend Brewing Company opened its second taproom, The Waypoint, in Bend’s Northwest Crossing neighborhood. Trade War Export Stout pours year round, on nitro at their downtown location and on CO2 at The Waypoint. In addition, you can enjoy the stout in the comfort of your own home or at the trailhead by picking up a 16-ounce can sold throughout Oregon and limited spots in Colorado. “We thought it (was) important to elevate Trade War to our year-round lineup to give stout lovers a go-to option they can enjoy whenever they want,” says Beckwith.

Crowdsourcing the Needs of Local Nonprofits, What If We Could Supports Those Doing Good Works in The Community

While taking part in a huge community volunteer event years ago, Rys Fairbrother was amazed at the number of people who came out to give their time. “There were literally about 3,000 people sprinkled throughout Central Oregon who were doing all types of volunteer activities,” he says. “It showed that people really wanted to give back to their communities.” The challenge, he thought, was to make people aware of all the nonprofits that needed not just funding, but in-kind giving and volunteers throughout the year.” As an entrepreneur with a marketing background, he always loved solving problems. “I thought, ‘How could we solve this problem with technology, one that people could really understand?’” says Rys. Since crowd-giving campaigns, such as Go Fund Me, had been popular for years, and people really understood the concept, he decided to build on that. Three years ago, he founded What If We Could, a crowdsourcing platform with the goal of bringing awareness of—and support to— nonprofits, while at the same time showing people and businesses the opportunities available to help them. For example, if the inside of a local nonprofit’s offices needed to be painted, the organization could request people for tasks such as heavy lifting, painting, and cleaning up. People logging on to the What If We Could website, would go to that charity, see what their favorite nonprofit’s needs might be, then decide if they wanted to be a part of that particular project. “When someone signs up, and let’s say they need 10 people, then the counter shows 10% of the goal is achieved,” says Rys. “When the next person joins the project, then 20% of the need is fulfilled.
That’s what gets people excited; they want to be part of an initiative that’s growing.” What If We Could also helps nonprofits utilize social media in a way that enables them to tell their stories and foster an understanding of the passion they feel for their causes. “We give nonprofits tools that they can easily share with their current supporters,” he says. Those supporters can then share these effective campaigns with family and friends to expand their outreach and garner even more action for their cause. In addition to providing these tools, Rys does a four-to-five minute radio interview monthly where he talks about the current initiatives that are going on to generate excitement and support. A full-page description of the opportunities will be available each month in Bend Lifestyle Magazine. “Plus, our guide, Together We Can, will be available in print as a resource for the community to see what these nonprofits are all about and what they’re doing all year long,” Rys says. “People and companies can then plan their giveback efforts.” Watch for a digital newsletter, the new initiative, Business Connect, and Shop 4 a Cause. A foundation for this unique model of connection is the question Rys encourages others to ask about their own goals and passions. Individuals as community can finish this sentence themselves: What if we could … (feed houseless neighbors/protect open spaces/create the community we want to live)? In the growing community of Central Oregon, needs of nonprofits are also growing. What If We Could is a link between our hearts and our actions. WhatIf WeCould.com
