soon imagined and designed long-lined, hand-held kites to replace the sails anchored to a windsurfing board by mast and boom. Untethered, kiteboarding pioneers were daredevils, because launching from land with 12 meter-plus kites in 20 m.p.h. winds could quickly take a sportsman up in a gust up and down in a precipitous drop. With the advent of inflatable, leading-edge bow-style kites in the mid-2000s, the safety of depowered kites created a more accessible sport and gave rise to the sport taught today. Taking it further, kiteboarding has expanded to include foiling and wing kiting. Just several years old, wing kiting is even more accessible as it gives the rider a smaller, hand-held kite to propel them on a board, whether a more

It’s no surprise that in Bend, with a large group of athletes, adventurers and transplants from coastal areas, the kite community is strong. Even without a lodge, beach or local wave as a place to congregate, it doesn’t take long to find common threads between a skier, snowboarder, or surfer to the sport of kiting—whether a person has been kiting for years or is hoping to learn. For this group of intrepid, and patient, kiteboarders in Bend, making the mountains work for their sport includes a fair share of science. To estimate if a day is “kiteable,” a person must understand wind meters, atmospheric science, and in essence “be their own forecaster,” says Giebelhaus. The

BREWERIES, CENTRAL OREGON’S FOOD CARTS ARE ALWAYS READY TO SATISFY A CRAVING. With roots in California taco trucks and New York hot dog carts, these restaurants on wheels were the logical next step to the influx of coffee kiosks now located at many major intersections. Beginning nearly a decade ago and steadily rising in numbers, food cart pods in the High Desert are more than just a place to eat. Equal parts restaurant, taproom, and picnic area, food cart pods started in 2013 with The Lot in Northwest Bend and have spread to more than a dozen locations throughout Central Oregon. The open-air pods are family—and dog—friendly and because they offer wide selections in food options, there’s usually something for even the pickiest of eaters. 24

This stunning landscape, formed by wind, water and snow, draws hikers, rock climbers, photographers, stargazers and cross-country skiers.
5.
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and the United States and is often referred to as the “Crown of the Continent.” Visitors will find more than 700 glacial lakes and many hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Other popular attractions include the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Angels Landing, Observation Point and Canyon Overlook Trail.
7. GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park spans 310,000 acres and towers above the Jackson Hole Valley. ARCHES NATIONAL PARK Arches National Park is defined by its natural sandstone arches, stunning red rocks and beautiful colors. The park has the largest concentration of natural arches in the world. Hikers can take advantage of Arches National Park’s numerous trails ranging from short hikes to Balanced Rock and the Double Arch to more strenuous routes through the Fiery Furnace and up to the Delicate Arch. Visitors may spot a variety of desert animals, including lizards, birds and snakes, depending on the time of day.
10. HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK To visit one of the country’s best national parks, journey to Maui’s Haleakala National Park. The name of this national park translates to “House of the Sun.” Legend goes that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood at the volcano’s summit, slowing its descent to make the days last longer. The Haleakala Crater is a dormant volcano that sits at 10,000 feet above sea level, and visitors flock to this location to view one of the most spectacular sunrises on Earth. Perhaps just as impressive are the park’s sunsets, which give way to star-studded skies. Haleakala National Park spans more than 30,000 acres and includes red deserts and rock gardens near the summit and waterfalls and streams in coastal Kipahulu. The park has beautiful hiking trails that can be traveled by foot or by horseback, and it is also home to more endangered species than any other park in the National Park Service.
Hopefully, this list of the 10 best national parks has inspired you to start planning your next adventure. Whether the mountains are calling, your inner daredevil needs to be satiated or a scenic road trip is in order, America’s national parks are begging to be explored! CityLifestyle.com/Bend
