This month we visit with local inventor Mark Schuette, whose dog-powered scooter brings “taking the dogs for a run” to a new level. Keep your eyes open for Mark and his dogs cruising around Bend this summer. As we all look forward to a brighter future in 2021, we interviewed Amy Erber, founder and medical director of Bright Mind TMS. In this issue, Amy shares more about the innovative treatments she offers to lead people toward mental wellness. With the summer season underway, the long, sunny days can be filled with backyard cookouts, camping trips, fishing excursions, biking trails, paddle boarding and so much more. On the following pages, we also bring you the story of Tumalo wood crafter Randall Knight, who shows us how he puts together custom cornhole boards — just one of the many things he creates in his barn workshop, from furniture, to games and even Bluetooth speakers. There are so many ways to enjoy the beginning of our summer season. So cheers to once again gathering with friends and family to celebrate emerging from a long and challenging year.

IN YOUR HAIR AND YOUR DOG BY YOUR SIDE. The feeling of freedom surrounds you as you mush your way to your destination. A quick glance at your four-legged friend reveals their excitement as they assist in your travel. Now imagine this isn’t taking place in the frozen confines of Alaska but on your neighborhood street; and your vehicle isn’t a dog sled but a Dog Powered Scooter. “This really shines in an urban environment,” says Mark Schuette, local inventor of the Dog Powered Scooter. “The system is more than just dog mushing; it’s dog-powered mobility.”
“The system is more than just dog mushing; it’s dogpowered mobility.” —Mark Schuette, Creator/Inventor
Unlike dog sledding or skijoring, the dogs are attached to the side of the scooter by an adjustable harness. There are no lines to get tangled and no commanding the canines to steer. Perhaps best of all, dogs learn it in a day. Schuette came up with the design in 2005 as a safer alternative to cycling with dogs. He chose the scooter because it’s safer and more cost efficient than a bicycle. After the first prototype with an extra wheel and other incarnations— such as the dog in the back—Schuette settled on the current style of the rider steering the dog by their side. In 2009, he began retrofitting tricycles and in 2018, he came up with a fat tire design. To ensure everyone’s safety, Schuette insists on a personalized ordering system for the Dog Powered Scooter. Though he contracts out the metal fabrication to Platt Green in Southerland, Oregon, Schuette does most of the work, from customer relations to assembly and packaging. It takes about two full days to create one. “Ordering begins with a phone call or email,” explains Schuette. “I want to make sure it is a good fit for both the rider and the dog.” Schuette currently offers four dog-powered models as well as some custom fitted for tricycles. All of the designs are based German Shorthaired Pointer, Bolt, was named after sprinter Usain Bolt.

A Brighter Path Toward M e n ta l H e a lt h ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS PROVIDE RELIEF FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION
THE PANDEMIC HAS TAKEN A TOLL ON PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH. The Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on major healthcare issues facing the nation, reports that in 2020 about four of 10 adults in the U.S. reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, up from one in 10 adults who reported these symptoms in 2019. Amy Erber, the founder and medical director of Bright Mind TMS, an integrative psychiatric practice in Bend, has observed these increases as well. People who have never been impacted by feelings of anxiety and/or depression are now seeking help, she says, and those who have had these mental health issues in the past are showing an exacerbation of symptoms. “I think that isolation and social distancing has significantly contributed to that,” says Erber. “We’ve also seen a big increase in mental health issues in youth.” Today, we have not only conventional treatments for anxiety and depression, but there are alternative treatments for those who may have not responded to the more traditional approaches in the past. Here, Erber answers questions about Bright Mind TMS and the more unique treatments it offers. I UNDERSTAND BRIGHT MIND USES A TREATMENT CALLED TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS). WHAT IS THIS AND WHY IS IT HELPFUL WITH TREATING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES? TMS has been FDA approved since 2008 for individuals with treatment-resistant depression. More recently, it has been approved for people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD.) It is a safe non-pharmacological treatment that uses a powerful magnetic field to directly 22

IMAGINATION IS A TOOL FOR RANDALL KNIGHT OF KNIGHTCRAFTED
Tumalo Wood Craft ARTICLE CHERYL PARTON
IN THE EARLY 2000S, RANDALL KNIGHT WAS WORKING IN MANAGEMENT FOR A LOCAL TRADE COMPANY WHERE AT CONSTRUCTION SITES, HE’D SPY DISCARDED LUMBER SCRAPS AND HIS ARTISTIC EYE WOULD VISUALIZE THEIR NEXT INCARNATIONS. Fast forward through a recession and his own personal reinvention. Today, unfinished wood is the starting point for multiple works of art and furniture, and Randall is owner/proprietor of Knightcrafted, founded in 2007. Going back generations, the Knight family has worked with their hands. Landing in Indiana from England, Randall’s great- great- grandfather had his own C.Knight Blacksmithing and Horseshoeing shop. Today, Knightcrafted operates from a barn workshop in Tumalo where Randall lives with his wife A’Leah and their two kids Kian and Lily. Randall has always been artistic, from his introduction to formal arts at the Pasadena Art Center as a high school student, to acting, creating music, and painting. He taught himself woodcarving — starting with figurines, and evolving to furniture and more industrial design. He has come a long way from making step stools for his young kids, and a garden hutch for his wife. During work days, he is busy in his barn studio creating everything from custom tables and cornhole boards, to inventing items with the clean lines and colors of the retro-modern scene of 1960s Europe. In the world of wood, Randall sees potential all around. “A friend gave me an old piece of walnut flooring. It was twisted and warped and had sun damage, but I turned that chunk of firewood into a Bluetooth speaker,” he says. Randall has evolved from a student of woodcrafting to a teacher himself with a goal: “I want to be brave and make the things that I see in my mind.” KnightCrafted.com 26

“LOOKING EVERY BIT A CONCEPT CAR BROUGHT TO REALITY, THE 2022 AUDI E-TRON GT IS A DYNAMIC WORK OF ART. Long, low, wide, and exhilarating, it is a grand turismo that further expands Audi’s prominent role in electric mobility,” Audi says. The 2022 Audi e-tron GT offers an exhilarating look. “Aesthetics arise from efficiency; an inverted Singleframe grille reinterprets honeycomb design elements, distinctive quattro blisters above each wheel, and a flat greenhouse with sloping roofline define e-tron GT design. Coupled with radiator and brake duct air inlets that can close when not needed to optimize aerodynamics, drag coefficient is a low 0.24, helping the e-tron GT move with efficiency in complement with its velocity,” the company says. Like all Audi e-tron GT models, there is a 93.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and the automobile can charge at 270kw using DC fast-chargers, allowing it to replenish the battery from 5%-80% in 22.5 minutes. A full charge lasts approximately 238 miles. The GT’s interior is made of leather-free, recycled materials, though Napa leather is also available. AudiUSA.com

PARTING THOUGHTS
LET'S PLAY CORNHOLE ENJOY FRIENDS AND FAMILY WITH THIS EASY-TO-LEARN LAWN GAME
PORTABLE, EASY TO LEARN, AND WITH A FORMAT THAT PROMOTES EASY CONVERSATION, ALL AGES ENJOY CORNHOLE AS A WAY TO PLAY DURING LONGER SUMMER DAYS. Similar to horseshoes, except using wooden boxes called platforms and bags of corn instead of horseshoes and metal stakes, players take turns pitching their bags to score three points in a hole, or one point on a platform until an individual or team reaches a score of 21. This laid-back lawn game has a long history, going back to the 1883 game “Parlor Quoits,” and serious players compete at a national level in the American Cornhole League, founded in 2015. But don’t let its roots distract from this game’s greatest asset as a light-hearted way to bring people together.
