Before you read this, take off all your clothes. Now look in the mirror for signs of melanoma/skin cancer. Notice any changes in the shape or color of your moles or freckles? Do you have any new blemishes that are larger than 1/4-inch, varied in color, irregular or asymmetrical in shape? If so, you may have melanoma or another form of skin cancer and you should see a dermatologist. Left alone, melanoma will spread throughout your body and eventually kill you. Melanoma can be successfully cured if caught early. Okay, you can put your clothes back on now.

ALLYSHIP IN ACTION PROVIDES EQUITY, SOCIAL JUSTICE EDUCATION AND SUPPORT Allyship in Action (AIA) was created to engage individuals, organizations, and communities to advance equity and social justice through assessment, education, long-range planning and support. Rooted in Central Oregon, AIA understands local needs and resources as well as the unique dynamics of rural Oregon. Their team includes people of diverse identities and lived experiences, enabling them to bring anti-racist and intersectional perspectives to issues of equity and social justice. “As our community works through multiple layers of trauma from the pandemic, from the fight for Black lives, and from protecting the rights of our immigrant neighbors, we’ve watched our community transform and engage in social justice in a way we have never seen in Central Oregon before,” they say. AIA encourages companies and individuals to learn about the history of oppression of BIPOC, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities in the community. Allyship in Action’s mission is, “To embolden and equip individuals and organizations to advance equity and social justice through active allyship that is rooted in place and centers those most impacted in service of our collective liberation.” AllyshipInAction.com

She wrote five new songs in about six months, taking cues from her passion for journaling, which she has done since college. Invigorated by her creative output, Worona set her sights on the goal of recording an album of original material called “Between The Lines.” The pop/folk title track details the correlation between keeping her current thoughts neatly confined within the lines of a new journal as opposed to the messy ideas filling her past journals without lines. Lyrics became: “I wrote to feel edgy, to shout, to feel small. I wrote so I’d remember someday what it was like to chase boys, make progress and choices with lots of mistakes along the way.” Once Worona announced her new project, friends and bandmates—Jim Goodwin, Stacie Lynn Johnson, Mike Biggers, Shireen Amini, Benji Nagel, and Kurt Silva—jumped at the chance to contribute to the album being recorded at Keith Banning’s Grange Recorders in Sisters. In addition, Biggers helped with her songwriting and Amini assisted with Worona’s Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. Even her brother Will helped with the album cover. “I simply wanted to create beautiful music, share it with others, and hopefully spark some joy and happiness for those who connect with it,” explains Worona.

SPREAD JOY WITH A DESSERT THAT TRANSPORTS TASTEBUDS TO A SUNNY LOCALE

CULINARY CREATIONS

T R E AT YO U R S E L F AFTER A YEAR OF ADVERSITY, I CAME TO REALIZE THAT TREATING MYSELF TO SIMPLE PLEASURES WAS KEY TO MAINTAINING A POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON LIFE. It turns out that a little TLC once in a while is scientifically proven to boost happiness, health, and general well-being. There’s a big bonus too: If you share a good deed, it has a ripple effect, inspiring another person to take care of themselves and others. You are literally spreading joy. One of my favorite ways to treat myself and others is by making a perfect dessert. Dessert is a delicacy that I often deprive myself of simply because, although delicious, it is a completely unnecessary part of a meal and preparation is time consuming. But that’s what makes it so special. I decided to surprise my husband and daughters with key lime pie cupcakes. They are sweet, tart, refreshing, and perfectly addicting. They complement the changing of seasons to warmer and sunnier days. For a moment, after my first bite, I imagined myself sunbathing on a sunny beach in Key

SPRING FEVER IS UPON US, AND THIS YEAR THE FEELING IS MORE INTENSE THAN EVER. After a long winter of being their layers and exposing their skin to the natural elements. But not so fast! Yes, the sun does feel wonderful and warm, but precautions need to be taken to keep skin safe from its damaging effects. “Tan skin is damaged skin,” says Dr. Gerald Peters (MD, FAAD, FACMS) of Peters Dermatology Center. “Our skin cells produce more pigment in response to UV (ultraviolet) radiation damage. In this day and age, most people are very conscious of the importance of minimizing their exposure to ‘radiation.’ Think of your best, healthiest skin color as the shade you were born with.” Dr. Peters has been helping people protect and enhance their skin for more than 20 years, and now Peters Dermatology Center is located in a new state-of-theart facility in Bend. He says, “In addition to our four operatory suites for Mohs surgery, there are plenty of separate rooms

Yet, the optimism offered by what grows has kept Sweet Posy farm looking forward to what blooms, especially after the pandemic. A large portion of the farm’s model are the weddings booked with bespoke blooms grown in its fields. When the wedding calendar was wiped out by COVID, Jen found ways to not only sustain the business but spread joy and use the flowers that she continued to reap. Sweet Posy’s unmanned Roadside Cart popped up, along with weekly flower subscriptions and accounts to wholesale flower studios. Fortunately, as she planted bulbs (15,000 plus ranuculus alone) and cultivated seeds, it was with hope for the spring and future. LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)

host limited gatherings both in the evening with what they call “Sip and Clip,” as well as a lunchtime break to escape in nature and leave with a bright bunch of blooms. “We want people to have the experience and feeling of joy by being among the flowers.” In May, it’s the ranunculus taking center stage. As Jen’s personal favorite of the Sweet Posy spring season that also includes anemones and Icelandic poppies, she loves ranunculus for the, “Flower power beauty of it, from the shapes of its blooms to the myriad of colors.” At the end of each day, a final walk among the flowers shows what her work in the fields coupled with Central Oregon sun have accomplished. It is a gift of natural beauty. Find Sweet Posy Roadside Stand at 63375 Deschutes Market Road, Bend (days/hours vary) @sweetposyfloral, and in the new book, “Where We Bloom” by Debra Prinzing (Bloom Publishers, April 2021).
