Before you read this, take off all your clothes. Now look in the mirror for signs of melanoma/skin cancer. Notice any changes in the shape or color of your moles or freckles? Do you have any new blemishes that are larger than 1/4-inch, varied in color, irregular or asymmetrical in shape? If so, you may have melanoma or another form of skin cancer and you should see a dermatologist. Left alone, melanoma will spread throughout your body and eventually kill you. Melanoma can be successfully cured if caught early. Okay, you can put your clothes back on now.

I’M GRATEFUL FOR BEING A MOM! This month reminds us of the women in our lives—our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. Where would we be without them? With this issue, we’ve taken it a step further to celebrate local women who inspire us. Enjoy reading about a group of women who’ve dedicated every Thursday for the past 25 years to gathering in friendship and lending a helping hand. Get a glimpse into a day in the life of realtor Carrie DiTullio, and learn about a mother-daughter team who launched a clothing line that reflects Bend’s adventurous lifestyle. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “A woman is like a tea bag. You can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” For those times you find yourself in a challenging situation, learn from some local leading ladies who share some of their life lessons in this issue. Finding Motivation for Life The scenic areas of Central Oregon are a big motivator for health and wellness. Enjoying our surroundings on foot or by bike is what many long for in the winter months. As we gaze upon the mountains and dream about reaching its summit, a fear of failure due to deconditioning or old injuries leave many struggling to stay motivated. Some of us want to hike the Green Lakes Loop or ride Cycle Oregon. Others may want to go for a brisk walk with their spouse or play outside with their grandkids. No matter the age or physical ability, getting to the root of what motivates you is critical to achieving the goals you set for yourself. Here are five tips from Bend physical therapist, Shanette Menegus for staying motivated so you can prepare your body for the summer ahead. No one is perfect. Living in Central Oregon, we are surrounded by former Olympians and professional and aspiring athletes. It can be a little intimidating. But each and every athlete in the world has at some point “fallen off the wagon. We all succumb to the couch or bag of potato chips every once in a while. But as long as you pick yourself back up and get back on that wagon, you can and will succeed. You have to keep trying. You must stay motivated. Start small. While winter sports are a big part of Bend, not everyone participates in them. Some people live here for the warm weather activities Central Oregon provides. For those fair-weather friends, coming off of a long winter can make you feel deconditioned and unprepared for summer activities. To remedy this, start small.

Head out for a daily walk with a friend (furry or human). Spring is a time for growth and new life. Observe the beauty of spring by looking around as you walk. Notice the budding trees and flowers. The light shade of green leaves that will eventually darken to a deeper hue. Smell the scents of juniper and sage. If you can find beauty and serenity in your walk, you are more apt to continue with your walking routine, which will help you get stronger every day. Find a simple way to reward yourself for your success. Start an exercise log and set spring and summer goals. Next, recognize any personal limitations that may prevent you from attaining the goals you set. Finally, chart a path towards overcoming limitations, reaching the goals and work every day towards winning with that list. If you stick with it and stay motivated, you can achieve your goals. Prepare your body. Depending on your goal, physical therapy may be an excellent option for helping address inflammation, poor function or limited mobility. Finding the right physical therapist is critical for long-term success. The relationship you build with them will help keep you motivated and progressing. Invite your friends to be involved in your healthy journey. Stay focused beyond ten days. When setting a goal, you should break it into ten-day increments or micro-goals to stay motivated. As you reach each tenth day, refocus as needed to ensure you are staying on track. Keep referring to your exercise log or journal to record and review your progress. This will help you have a better success rate at following through and finally reaching the lofty goal you set for yourself.

cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and Central Oregon has one of the highest per capita rates of melanoma occurring in the country. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer and is highly treatable when detected early. “Most of us love the outdoors, but our skin hates the High Desert sun,” says Gerald Peters Jr., MD, FAAD, FACMS. The longer wavelengths, known as UVA, penetrate and damage deeper structures like elastic fibers and collagen, as well as pigment cells (melanocytes), where melanoma starts, he says. According to Dr. Peters, you can help prevent skin cancer by minimizing mid-day exposure, seeking shade versus direct sunlight, wearing protective clothing, using effective sunscreen and including vitamin D in a healthy diet. Early detection with timely and effective treatment is paramount and is best accomplished with baseline skin cancer screening exams, and annual or more frequent exams are considered prudent for individuals at higher risk. 541.323.7546, PetersDerm.com

Bend Lifestyle | May 2019

EVERY THURSDAY. “Well, we’ve missed a few,” comes the correction from a voice somewhere near the coffee pot. So, almost every Thursday for more than 25 years, a force of women self-described as Lady Power comes together to get stuff done. Unstoppable, yet welcoming of interruption, these ladies exude boundless energy and emit loads of laughter as they tell their stories. They are at Sandra Miller’s house this time. It’s going to be an easy day for the five women, who range in age from 76 to 84. If it weren’t for the writer and photographer, they’d already be taking on a work project of Sandra’s design. Each week Lady Power gathers to catch up on the highs and lows of the week prior and

take on a helpful task for the host. These aren’t the tasks of the tea cookie and doily-making kind. Lady Power member Rachel Baker recounts, “We put in the floor joists at Cathy’s once.” “That was a whole lot more fun than when we get to Rachel’s house,” Cathy Jensen replies, “Rachel always has us do her windows.” The remaining four Lady Powers roll their eyes and sigh, then practically in unison repeat, “Every time. The windows.”

their gatherings catching up. “No gossip, just keeping up on the stories of the week,” says Alice Elshoff. The next hour is dedicated to the work at hand. They garden, lay carpet or tile, root out old trees, and at Rachel’s house, they do windows. Rachel pauses to reminisce, “Think how young we were when we started! How did we know how to do anything?” Over the years, the ladies have had their share of heartaches. They’ve lost husbands, sons, other family members and, other Lady Power members. Three of them are currently caretakers for their husbands. And when fellow Lady Power member Sue Schock died, her husband Dick became an honorary member. He is the only male allowed to regularly attend the weekly gatherings. “Sue was great at scampering up trees for trimming,” says Nancy Conner. “We miss her. And we’re so glad Dick chose to join in her place.” One special tradition the ladies have enjoyed through the years is their yearly Winter Solstice party. They write intentions for the coming year, read poetry and burn savory herbs and written notes in an open fire. Looking to the future, Nancy sums it up: “I imagine we’ll be doing a lot more talking and a lot less working.” Sue adds, “That’s okay, we’ve got to that age where all the stories sound new again.” “We are not old,” says Rachel as Nancy chimes in, “The people around us are though!” There’s a joyous round of laughter and the Lady Power group is set off on another round of stories. 18

CAROL URISH-McLATCHIE OCCUPATION: National High School Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year, at Summit High School, with Jim McLatchie (as voted by U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) U.S. Women’s Distance Coach, Track and Field, Pan Am Games 2019, Lima, Peru HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? “Success is a feeling of accomplishment after I complete a goal. Success might be winning a race, the team racing well at a big event or a new runner achieving a personal record and watching them figuring out that their hard work has paid off.” WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON? “I like to visit the High Desert Museum, go for an easy ski at Meissner Snow Park or pick up litter on trails near my home. I can also be found exploring the Oregon High Desert like Kam Wah Chung (State Heritage Site) and the Painted Hills.” WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO GOOD HEALTH/FITNESS? “At my age, I am thankful I have health insurance and keep regular health appointments. One never knows when you will be hit with a health challenge. I was recently diagnosed with a low-grade breast cancer. I chose an extensive surgery and plan to get back to my usual coaching schedule as soon as I can.” WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED SO FAR IN LIFE? “I have learned that I can learn so much from mentors and people with experience that I have met in my life. My hometown doctor told me to “be myself” as I headed to college in the 60s. Glenn Cunningham spoke to my graduating class of 19 and shared his challenges with life and running. Information like that opened my mind to consider so many more possibilities in my life. I ran competitively for 22 years and I learned that the more energy and focus I put into running the more I improved. Improved performances earned me opportunities to travel and race in many places in the world. I also get a lot of satisfaction out of volunteer activities with USATF (USA Track and Field). Coaching at Summit High School with my husband provides daily delights and puzzles in working with those student athletes. In the long run, I hope the athletes will learn some of the same lessons I have experienced through sport.” 20

“One thing leads to another. And life doesn’t always play out in a straight line. Always take care of family and keep building your friendships and partners along the way, with your eye on a positive future.”

SALLY RUSSELL OCCUPATION: Mayor of Bend HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? “Did I follow my passion for making our community better, using my professional experience, listening to voices throughout Bend, and see a positive difference in my community? If I can look back at the end of my term as Bend’s Mayor and answer this question with a resounding YES, I would call it a success.” WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON? “So many choices! Winters you can find me nordic skiing or snowboarding on Bachelor, and in the warmer months taking in the beauty of our Deschutes River on a mountain bike or paddle board. That’s just the beginning . . .” HOW CAN LOCAL CITIZENS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITY? “I encourage each and all Bendites to engage in giving back to community when and wherever they can. I believe we are stronger when we welcome a diversity of opinions. Bend’s city committees and neighborhood associations are most effective when they are inclusive of a variety of viewpoints. Bend is better for the invaluable time of our dedicated Bend citizens!” WHAT LESSON HAVE YOU LEARNED SO FAR IN LIFE? “One thing leads to another. And life doesn’t always play out in a straight line. Always take care of family and keep building your friendships and partners along the way, with your eye on a positive future. This will keep you moving gracefully through the lumps and bumps along the way. With a little work, unknown doors will continue to open to you.”

TINA REDD, Ph.D OCCUPATION: Director Central Oregon Community College, Redmond Campus HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? “Success is that sweet spot between goals. You see a problem that you want to fix, or a person you want to be, or a life you want to live. Success is feeling like you've finally arrived, just long enough to accept the truth that you still have more to do.” WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON? “Near water, along the Deschutes downtown, or at Cline or Steelhead Falls. In the summer, I'll be kayaking Hosmer or Clear Lake, or just enjoying the whole day at Suttle Lake. Our outdoor concert options are a real magnet for me too.” WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A LIFE-LONG LEARNER? “The ability to change your mind or even adjust your perspective when you learn something new is priceless, and that's what life-long learning is. The benefit is living—being willing to really live and engage and be fearless in the face of new truths.” WHAT LESSON HAVE YOU LEARNED SO FAR IN LIFE? “Love your imperfect life now. The good, the bad, the ridiculous—this is the only life you get. I spent years in the “when” zone. When I finish grad school, when I get a raise, when the kids graduate from college, when I retire. Then, a mammogram turned into a mastectomy and I had the opportunity to fathom a life where "when" never happens. I was so surprised by the regret that came bubbling up and had the realization that you don't regret things you don't control—regret is about decisions. And most of my regrets centered on relationships: taking them for granted, being selfish with my time, not being present for little events that were a big deal to someone. It's so much better to cherish the whole thing now. My lesson is that there's no perfect future, but when you look at it just the right way, now can be as close to perfect as it's going to get.”

CHANTAL STROBEL OCCUPATION: Library Communications & Development, Deschutes Public Library System Director, “A Novel Idea...Read Together” HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? "Success is when I'm able to detach from my ego long enough to create something beautiful to shine brightly in other people's lives." WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON? "I can usually be found walking along the Deschutes River with my daughters, good friends and a handsome pug named Fritz. In the heat of summer, I enjoy a day on Suttle Lake and a trip to Sno Cap on the ride home." HOW DO THE LIBRARY'S LITERARY EVENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR CENTRAL OREGONIANS? "These events create a space for us to listen and to engage with some of the greatest thinkers of our time. Through these exchanges, we learn more about our shared experience and begin to understand one another with a deeper level of compassion and openness." WHAT LESSON HAVE YOU LEARNED SO FAR IN LIFE? "The most difficult experiences in my life have fortified me with my greatest strength, joy and resilience. For Carrie DiTullio, voted Best Realtor in Bend Lifestyle’s 2018 Readers’ Choice awards, the skill set includes everything from market analysis, marketing, negotiating, and investigative research to the psychology of reading people and listening carefully. “My goal is to be sure I understand what my clients’ goals are and help them get the information they need to make the right decisions for themselves,” Carrie says. That decision often means buying or selling a home in Bend. Having lived in Central Oregon for more than 25 years, Carrie has first-hand knowledge of our community. Her background is in broadcasting and communications (she may be recognized as a former anchor for local television station KTVZ-21). At 8 a.m., when mortgage lender and title/escrow offices open, communication picks up. “I reserve time each day for active transactions—there are always questions or documents needed to close a deal,” says Carrie. 10 a.m. Pick up coffee and pastries to take to the first appointment. 10:30 a.m. Meet sellers at their home to go over pre-listing tasks. This includes de-cluttering, moving furniture, scheduling maintenance on the furnace and AC systems, getting carpets and windows cleaned. Revisit their list price and talk about any new comparables. 12:30 p.m. Take a phone call from a new client from out of town who will visit Bend next month. Discuss the current market, their needs, and a plan to send them an email with potential homes they may like to see. 1 p.m. Carrie says, "I meet with my assistant Ashley at our Old Mill office to go over priorities for the next few days, including hospitality for out-of-town clients flying into Bend for a day of showings." 3 p.m. Meet with local buyers to see three homes new on the market. 4:30 p.m. Return phone calls and emails that have stacked up between running from one meeting to the next. 5:45 p.m. Yoga with daughter Molly. 7 p.m. Dinner break with both children. “I really value any time I can get with my two teenagers, they are growing up so fast and I'm very proud them,” Carrie says. 7:30 p.m. Schedule showings for the next day, spend time on the MLS looking at new listings to stay informed. Answer emails and texts in anticipation of the next day. 9:30 p.m. Hang out with teens, play with Havanese puppy, Rosie or watch a favorite TV show to unwind. If you need a little more coverage, use a foundation stick for spot coverage. + Step 2: Add a little color by pressing cream blush on the apples of your cheeks. We love Glossier’s Cloud Paint, which is seamless, sheer and beautiful, giving you a healthy, flushed glow. + Step 3: Lightly apply a powder highlighter to the high points of your cheek-

Livin’ Bend

Julie and Skye Burket

JULIE AND SKYE BURKET BUILD A BUSINESS TO LOVE AND SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY

BEND, OREGON IS THE KIND OF PLACE PEOPLE LOVE SO MUCH THEY GET CREATIVE TO STAY HERE. Similarly, others create businesses out of their passion for the adventurous lifestyle that Bend affords them. Two years ago, Julie Burket and her oldest daughter Skye, 22, were returning from a trip. As they approached their hometown of nearly three decades, Julie exclaimed, “Let’s just do Bend!” and their locally-focused lifestyle brand Livin’ Bend Clotheslines was born. Skye was attending college at the time, but when she wasn’t nannying or studying, she and her friends were outside, camping, hiking, or snowboarding. The company’s products reflect these interests. The pair started with a few casual clothing items, adorning hoodies, t-shirts and beanies with amusing, tonguein-cheek phrases: “Ski the Bumps,” “Shred Rip Soar,” “In Search of Trailhead,” “Smith Rocks!” or “Beer, Better to Have More Than Enough.” The owners of five dogs between their family of six, Julie and Skye wanted to feature some pooch-friendly products. A t-shirt saying, “Bend, Where Every Dog Is a Top Dog,” honors their beloved Ria, a teacup Chihuahua.

2.

Another goal of their family-run business is to give back. The Burkets donate 25 percent of net sales of all dog-related products to Family Access Network (FAN) to help local children obtain items necessary for everyday success at school. Other products honor the LGTBQ community or support education around Parkinson’s Disease. Julie says,

1. Punch Out Parkinson’s T-shirt | $22.95 | A portion of proceeds go to Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon and the National Parkinson’s Foundation. 2. White Frisbee | $5.95 | Livin' Bend's Pooch Project™ provides 25 percent of net proceeds from the sale of all dog products to Family Access Network. 34

“The best part about Livin’ Bend is learning, succeeding and giving back with my amazing daughter. Skye has many talents and is truly the most sensible person I’ve ever known. I cherish every minute of the process.” LivinBendClotheslines.com
