How Education Helped Fix One Local Ultramarathoner’s Knee Former ultramarathon runner, Amelia Coffey was having a difficult time breathing. She had been on a steroid inhaler for years without improvement and was also suffering from unrelated migraine headaches. At the recommendation of her doctor, Amelia began seeing Glenn Maclean-Talbot, PT, DPT for physical therapy. Glenn quickly identified the issues she was facing, rapidly improving Amelia’s situation. No longer taking steroids, and headache free, Amelia thought she would see if Glenn could do anything about her knee pain. “Amelia knew she had a major knee condition and wanted a home program that would help her stay active and minimize the risk of further injury and pain,” said Glenn. Understanding anatomy is a critical first step in recovering and managing knee problems. Simple things like how a person walks or exercises can adversely impact the knees over time. This is because when the body is in motion, the forces that come from the hip go to the knee. This also occurs with abnormal foot and ankle motions translating up to the knee. Additionally, hip weakness can often lead to altered knee mechanics, and over time lead to knee osteoarthritis, which can limit the ability to perform certain activities. “As a patient, understanding the detailed reasons why the knee issue is happening is
critical for a successful recovery and long-term management,” said Glenn. Because we are unable to see our body when it is in motion, it is virtually impossible to recognize precise issues. Physical therapists conduct a comprehensive review of the body to see how the knee is affected by the rest of the body. They then develop programs to target specific issues and offload the structures that are causing joint compression and pain. By addressing all the areas that impact knee dysfunction, physical therapists can help slow the aging process and reduce the risk of injury. With knowledge comes the power to heal. “Glenn gave me my life back,” said Amelia. “He quickly pinpointed exactly where my body was weak. He educated me on what my body was doing that was causing pain and gave me specific exercises to strengthen my hips. My knee is so much better. Anyone that wants to stay active should see Glenn for an evaluation.” The role of education in physical therapy is crucial for empowering patients towards self-management so they can fully recover. The significance of education in outcomes is not new. However, not all physical therapists provide the same level of education to their patients. The most successful physical
therapists use education as a tool to help their patients stay active for life.

Q&A
I wanted to learn more about Hale Men’s Clinic, a new medical clinic here in Bend that specializes in men’s health, specifically Testosterone Replacement Therapy, or TRT, so I checked out their website. It definitely got my attention! It all sounded great . . . almost too good to be true. Along with some other online research I did, I was starting to think that TRT was a miracle potion or the fountain of youth which left me more skeptical. I decided to call the clinic and get the facts. I spoke with the doctor that owns Hale Men’s Clinic, Kristian Ferry MD. Here are the questions that I asked and his answers:” — Jeremy Shay

The Rotary Club of Greater Bend committed $75,000 to the project and multiple local businesses donated time and money toward the design and build out. The vocational program will begin by teaching building trade areas such as carpentry and woodworking, then expand to computer technology in the future. SEVEN PEAKS SCHOOL SEEKS INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM FOR PRIMARY GRADES Seven Peaks School (SPS), a K-8 private school in Bend, was accepted as a candidate for International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme. International Baccalaureate (IB), based in Switzerland, is a worldwide educational program of rigorous coursework similar to honors or Advanced Placement classes. According to IB, only 17 schools in Oregon have the primary program, for ages three to 12. If accredited, the program would be the first for Central Oregon elementary students and would link to the SPS middle school IB program that has been in place since 2013. SevenPeaksSchool.org

Night Out with the Arts
SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF DREARY, DARK FEBRUARY SITS A DAY MADE JUST FOR INSPIRATION: VALENTINE’S DAY. This year, why not nix the traditional chocolates and flowers and get creative? Bend may be known for its outdoor recreation, but our local cultural scene is thriving and has plenty to offer for a night out with the arts. Art wakes up our brains, and brings us together. Whether we’re part of an audience or up to our elbows in paint, experiencing art impacts our body chemistry in positive ways. It lowers cortisol, the stress hormone, and raises oxytocin, the hormone of love and bonding. It lights up parts of our brain that often get neglected. In other words, art keeps us happy and connected. And isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is about? To help you get into the creative zone, we’ve rounded up a sampling of inspired art outings available throughout the month of February. From painting and film to theater or dance, we think you’ll find the perfect way to share an evening of art with someone you adore. So make a date with your sweetheart, your bestie, or the whole clan, and take heart in the arts.

From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO
1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.
