Gift of Music Fundraiser The Cascade School of Music held their annual Gift of Music Fundraiser April 28 at Awbrey Glen Restaurant. TEEN MURAL PROJECT CREATES ART FOR BEND The Teen Mural Project, a collaborative program from Basecamp Studio and High Desert Mural Festival, guided 8-12th graders from middle and high schools in Bend and La Pine through the creative process to produce a large-scale mural in Bend. The students attended art workshops to brainstorm, design and implement the project and to learn technical art and mural-making skills. “Not only did our participants have incredible talent and passion for art, but they also worked really hard to communicate with one another to create a collective vison,” says Darlene Becker, executive director and founder of Basecamp Studio. “It was so fun to watch them work

Central Oregon Veterans Ranch RESTORING PURPOSE AND SPIRIT TO COMBAT VETERANS ARTICLE CLAUDIA HINZ PHOTOGRAPHY CHERYL PARTON THE CENTRAL OREGON VETERANS RANCH (COVR) BROKE GROUND ON 19 ACRES NORTH OF BEND IN 2015, BUT THE SEEDS OF THIS ONE-OF-A-KIND MODEL OF CARE AND FELLOWSHIP WERE PLANTED LONG BEFORE. For many years, Alison Perry, a licensed professional counselor and founder of COVR, worked with veterans through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs system in Portland and Bend, and despaired over what she identified as a hopeless cycle of treating combat warriors with pills instead of providing compassionate care. She saw veterans self-medicating with alcohol and drugs, retreating from friends and family, and suffering in silence. Perry envisioned a healing place where veterans could work the land, sleep under the stars and be in a community of fellow veterans. This vision is realized in Central Oregon Veterans Ranch, which has served nearly 100 veterans. It is home to two feisty llamas, chickens, a greenhouse, peace garden and the Honor Quarters, a home where veterans can live out their last days in a loving community. Russell Hunston, a Marine combat veteran, describes the “natural healing” he has experienced on the ranch. Remembering the jungles of Vietnam he says, “you lose your soul.” Many veterans feel disconnected from family and friends when they come home, and some feel stigmatized by civilians who don’t understand combat trauma and mistakenly view it as a disorder. The ranch provides a place for veterans to feel supported by peers who understand what they’ve experienced in war. Community is one element of the healing process for veterans; the other significant pieces are service, engaging in meaningful work, discovering purpose, and experiencing the “regenerative energy” of working on the land, says Perry. “There’s a goodness that’s taking place here,” says Bill Cassel, a Vietnam combat veteran. “We’re all gonna be better off at the end of the day.” Russell Hunston, Vietnam veteran

The Future of Your Posture Five Tips for Better Posture Now Have you ever looked longingly at someone with good posture and wished you could stand or walk as straight? Poor posture can lead to a variety of chronic pain issues such as back, neck and shoulder pain. Here are five tips from Siiri Berg, PT, OCS of Step & Spine Physical Therapy, that you can start implementing today to improve your posture for life. Tip 1: Avoid shoulder slumping and overcorrection We know that slumping shoulders isn’t good for posture, but overcorrecting the shoulders by pushing them back too far isn’t good either. Doing so creates a curve in the back. Instead, your head, trunk, and pelvis should be in vertical alignment. Run your hand along your spine. Your back should feel straight vertically. If it isn’t, make adjustments to your bottom and shoulder positioning. Tip 2: Use proper head alignment - When working on a computer or laptop it’s common to prop up screens with books or stands. Screen position is important. However, it’s equally important not to place screens too high. The center of your screen should be 10° below the horizon. This means that computer screens should be adjusted to eye level or slightly lower to allow for proper head alignment. Tip 3: Sit properly while working - Most office chairs are not made to support our backs properly. As such, adjustments must be made
to prevent slouching or overcorrecting. When sitting, first place your bottom to the very back of the chair as this will help your neck, back, and pelvis line up properly. Your ribcage should be vertically aligned above your pelvis. If your chair’s backrest doesn’t support your back, place a pillow behind your back for support. Tip 4: Adjust TV placement - Many homes today have televisions installed above the mantle, which is too high. Instead, the ideal place for a TV is just above eye level. Low entertainment centers are great options as they encourage proper television position. Tip 5: Sit properly when relaxing - Many of today’s couches are made with deep cushions that are great for naps but cause slouching when sitting, which can lead to hip pain. Proper couch seating should have 3-4 finger widths between the cushion and the back of the knee when sitting. If your couch doesn’t allow this, add some pillows to support your back.
Good posture is a significant component of overall health as it reduces the risk of fatigue and strain on the soft tissues in the body, which can lead to chronic pain. Often, imbalances are present that prevent a person from having proper postural alignment. Physical therapists can help by identifying any imbalances and then teaching the correct way to target and strengthen the core muscles of the body. Always consult a doctor or physical therapist for assistance in postural training.
