AHH, ART! The following pages introduce you to talented local artists making their mark here in Bend. A father-son duo uses a traditional glass-making technique to create one-of-a-kind blown glass to beautifully adorn your home. A sculptor, inspired by a child’s serious medical condition, creates a sculpture as a tribute to her and her family. A talented chef creates patisseries and oh-so-good treats in her French bakery downtown. Ever wonder what a typical day in the life of an artist is like? We spent time with artist Douglas Robertson, who shared his daily routine. We also give you a look inside an artist’s home, and how she and her husband tastefully designed it for their Pacific Northwest art collection. And finally, we spotlight locally-made items for guilt-free shopping in this issue’s Local’s Choice.

Bend Lifestyle | April 2018
OLD-WORLD PRACTICE LEADS TO MODERN-DAY ART
A TRADITIONAL GLASS-MAKING TECHNIQUE HAS MADE ITS WAY FROM ITALY TO MANZANITA AND NOW BEND, THANKS TO FATHER AND SON DUO ROGER AND TREVOR CROSTA. Artisan-owners of local studio Crosta Lighting, they use a process called “scavo,” which is Italian for excavation. The process adds a gritty yet graceful texture to their blown-glass art, which includes hanging pendants and chandeliers. Each piece, made individually and by hand, feels unearthed from centuries ago—uniquely worn and intricate. The Scavo method, which began in the 1920s, requires a mixed powder of organic compounds and is applied to molten glass at extremely high temperatures. The mixture essentially eats the surface of the glass creating distinctive designs. Once the annealing process is complete, the surface of the glass is scrubbed and washed to expose the texture. At the final stage, the Crostas cold work the glass and attach the piece to handmade hardware, which they painstakingly make from solid brass, applying patina to each part by torch. Inspired by colors of the natural world, the Crosta’s creations feel scoured right from the grounds of Oregon favored regions, including the high desert, the mountains, the beach, and our cities. Of their blown glass, Roger Crosta says, “The pieces set their own atmosphere. They can be quite romantic, even cathartic.” Trevor Crosta (left) and his father, Roger

FLOAT HUNT PROJECT: A Treasure Hunt for Glass Lovers Many of us have collected treasures we find outside to display in our homes from shells to rocks to feathers, but have you ever found a glass float? Roger and Trevor have hidden their artisan-created glass floats, made with the Scavo technique, in secret spots on your favorite Oregon trails and beaches as part of their Float Hunt Project. Made to look like they’ve been floating at sea for decades, the project has been a treasure hunt since its inception in 2015. Either nestled in driftwood, sitting alongside high desert trails, or washed up from the surf, take a close look next time you’re out to find a Crosta creation. “IT’S A BRAIN TUMOR.” These are words no one wants to hear. Yet they’re words that forever circle back unsummoned for Bend sculptor Kelly Thiel, and Rachell and Kevin Cook. Thiel lost her mother, who was also her partner in crafting functional pottery, to brain tumors in 2009. The event affected her so deeply that she gave up her craft for many years. When she returned to it, she found herself drawn to clay for developing figures that could tell stories—“Personal stories that could be passed on as ancestors leave us,” Thiel explains. The Cooks face the reality of a brain tumor in their five-yearold daughter, Kinsley. Diagnosed at nine months of age, Kinsley has endured numerous surgeries, chemotherapy treatments and the loss of her sight. Their battle includes monthly—sometimes weekly—visits to Portland’s Doernbecher Children's Hospital which takes a toll on a family already walking a tightrope of mortality with their little girl. Their stories merged when last fall, Thiel got a call from Elaine Eisenbraun, co-founder with her daughter Laura of Portrait Connection, a nonprofit that pairs artists with families of children with serious medical conditions to provide lasting memories. Eisenbraun explained that while they normally paired children with portrait painters, Kinsley had lost her sight. She asked, would Thiel be interested in doing a sculpture so Kinsley would be able to “see” it too? “The universe was saying, ‘yes’,” Thiel is sure. Eisenbraun was prompted to start Portrait Connection in 2017 by the struggles of a neighbor family who had two children living with critical illness. “I wondered how to do something meaningful and thought of the capacity of art to be long lasting radiance that can shine for people for multi-generations,” Eisenbraun says. The Cook family and Thiel will meet for the first time at
