DESCHUTES BREWERY OFFERS NEW WAYS TO TOUR AND TASTE Deschutes Brewery tasting room hours for the production facility at 901 SW Simpson Avenue have changed to 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, allowing customers to access the brewery’s award-winning beer for an additional two hours every night at this location.

New beer sizes now offered for purchase at the tasting room include pints, half pints, snifters and full sample trays.

Housing First is a two-pronged method—endorsed by the US Interagency Council on Homelessness—for solving homelessness one person or family at a time. Built on the concept that it is infinitely more difficult to become sober, get a job, or stay healthy when one has no stable home, the method aims to house individuals and families first and address the issues resulting in homelessness second.

“Homelessness has changed in our community over the last several years,” notes Colleen Thomas, BS, QMHA, Homeless Outreach Coordinator at Deschutes County Behavioral Health.

“If you met Betsy in Drake Park or on a running trail, you’d never guess that she is homeless and has been sleeping in her car, camping on forest service land, or couch surfing with friends for years,” says Colleen Sinsky, Street Outreach Case Manager for CYFC. Now 21, Betsy works full-time at a downtown restaurant, yet could never pull together what was needed in order to secure an apartment. In her younger years, she was a resident at CYFC’s Living Options for Teens (LOFT) home on 14th Street.

TULA MOVEMENT ARTS: THE STUDIO “IT’S REALLY AMAZING TO HELP PEOPLE MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE, POSSIBLE.” Lotsie Cash, owner of Tula Movement Arts, is no novice to the importance of movement in life. For over 10 years, she was a professional ballet dancer in New York and Boston. She also practiced and taught various types of yoga for years prior to moving to Bend and opening her Northwest Crossing studio in June, 2017.

Tula, which means "balance" in Sanskrit, is an integral part of every class taught here. Through finding tangible balance in every pose, each class ultimately aims to individually and collectively find a deeper understanding of balance in life.

There are currently 15 experienced and passionate instructors at Tula Movement Arts. Some classes are designed specifically for expecting moms, kids, athletes, and teens, but most classes are open to anyone, regardless of age or skill level. Whether you’re an experienced yogi or brand new to the mindful arts, there’s a place for you to exercise both your body and mind.

We asked Cash to introduce us to three fitness trends—Slacklining, Aerial Yoga, and Acroyoga—taking off in Bend.

SLACKLINING TREND #1: SLACKLINING “SLACKLINING IS THE PHYSICAL EMBODIMENT OF SURRENDERING TO AND TRUSTING IN INSTABILITY.” Slacklining classes involve learning how to sit, stand, and put one foot in front of the other on a flat stretch of nylon suspended slightly off the ground called a slackline. It challenges the participant to get out of their own head and focus all of their energy on the present moment.

If you’re an avid climber, slacklining is a great way to train and stay in shape, especially during the winter. This class is also excellent for kids and families.

It teaches focus and attention, as well as problem solving with an informal structure. The whole family can help each other to literally—and figuratively— put one foot in front of the other through slacklining.

STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY. THE HAMMOCK ALLOWS YOU TO GET INTO DEEP STRETCHES IN A SAFE, SUPPORTED WAY.” Aerial yoga is similar in structure to a traditional Vinyasa flow class, but includes elements of suspended, flying, and floating poses through use of a hammock attached to the ceiling.

Classes start on the ground and slowly move upwards by letting the hammock support you— partially suspended at first—and then fully flying or floating off the ground with the hammock.

It’s a new and exciting approach to your regular yoga routine that allows you to defy gravity.

It’s also a way to continue practicing yoga if you have ankle or wrist injuries, and allows you to get into a pose without supporting all of your weight on your hands and feet.

TREND #3: ACROYOGA “ACROYOGA HELPS YOU LEARN TO ASK FOR WHAT YOU REALLY NEED.” Acroyoga is a team-based yoga class with groups of three people per team—a base, a flyer, and a spotter—who switch roles throughout class in beginner levels, and then primarily specialize in more advanced classes. The base supports the flyer, and the spotter makes sure that everyone is safe. Therapeutic flying is also an element of the class, which involves a Thai massage given by the base to the flyer.

Although it may appear to be only for the ultrastrong, acroyoga teaches you the technique of bone stacking to support the weight of another body, making it accessible for anyone regardless of your strength ability. As a communications-based, team-oriented class, each team member has a

I grew up learning to swim in the hot, arid Southern Washington climate.

Missing a regular swimming program when I moved to Bend almost 16 years ago, I joined Central Oregon Masters Aquatics (COMA), and re-discovered the joy of swimming in a group environment. With year-round pool facilities in Bend, Sisters, Redmond and Madras—as well as COMA coaches who facilitate hours of mentorship for all levels of swimmers—it is easy to get excited about swimming in Central Oregon, even in the winter.

The COMA program, which coaches roughly 250-300 swimmers every year, varying seasonally, emphasizes that it is open to all adult fitness swimmers, ages 18 and over.

Bob Bruce, the head coach of COMA, has over 40 years of experience coaching novice, high school, college, and master-level swimmers. The oldest person to come under his tutelage in Central Oregon was an octogenarian.

“We have lots of participants of Medicare age,” says Bruce.

COMA swim practices are held weekly throughout the year at Juniper Swim & Fitness in Bend, the Athletic Club of Bend, the Sisters Athletic Club and at the Madras Aquatic Center. Swimming lanes are set up by ability, from beginner to elite athlete, and not everyone who swims with COMA competes.

Personally, I rarely finished in a top position during competition in high school, so joining COMA was purely for the social and fitness aspects. I have no desire to compete in an open-water race or tune up my (relatively non-existent) triathlete skills during off-season months.

“If you can swim 500 yards continuously, you’re ready to swim with COMA,” says Bruce.

For swimmers looking to compete, COMA offers competitive outlets through its affiliation with the Oregon Masters Swimming (OMS) and United States Masters Swimming (USMS) organizations. COMA also hosts the annual Cascade Lakes Swim Series and the Foster Lake Cable Swims events.

Held at Elk Lake last July, the 23-year-old Cascade Lakes Swim Series featured five open-water swims. Billed as a swim series and festival, the Cascade Lake Swim Series showcased child-friendly activities in between races and a “special survivor” mug to everyone completing all five swims.

The 5000-meter swim at the Cascade Lake Swim Series is the longest swim and also doubles as the USMS National Open Water Championship.

The Foster Lake Cable Swims, held at Foster Lake near Sweet Home, Oregon, features a one-mile and a two-mile race.

Perhaps the easiest transition from pool swimming to open-water swimming, a cable swim is defined, literally, by a cable that has buoys attached. Participants are able to swim without worrying about going of-course, an anxiety reducer for those newly testing out the waters of an open-water swim. Foster Lake is especially fun as it is the only permanently-anchored cable swim course in the western United States.

SALAD 3 medium beets peeled and cubed 1 tbsp olive oil 6-8 cups of mixed greens 1 pomegranate salt & pepper to taste

CANDIED PECANS 2 cups pecans 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp molasses

BALSAMIC REDUCTION DRESSING 1 cup balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp honey

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix the 1 tbsp olive oil with the beets, salt and pepper, and roast for 30 minutes or until soft. Let cool completely. Meanwhile, open the pomegranate and remove the seeds for the salad. In saute pan, add 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 2 tbsp molasses, heat over low heat until its melted. Add the 2 cups pecans and thoroughly mix.

Simmer balsamic and honey in small saucepan until reduced by almost half. Stir frequently, checking on it, avoid it getting too thick and syrupy by removing from heat earlier than later.

Prepare salad in a large bowl, add the beets, pomegranate seeds, candied pecans, and balsamic reduction to your liking. Enjoy!
