I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to celebrate the women who make life richer, more meaningful, and infinitely more beautiful.
Our great grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, daughters, and sisters are often the most influential people in our lives. And with Mother’s Day right around the corner, all eyes are on moms. But I’d be remiss not to also acknowledge the incredible mother figures among us—the teachers, mentors, neighbors, and friends who pour into our lives with quiet strength and selfless love.
One woman I am endlessly grateful for is the one pictured above with me—my mom, Lisa. She is so much more than a mother; she’s my best friend, my greatest role model, and a living example of everything a remarkable woman should be. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve heard the words, “Everyone needs a Lisa in their life.” And if you’ve had the joy of knowing her, you understand exactly why. She leads with love, gives without hesitation, and shows up—always. Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support have shaped who I am, and I can only hope to one day be even half the mother she is.
In the spirit of honoring women, I also want to shine a light on the incredible women-owned businesses in our community. One of the greatest joys of this role is championing local entrepreneurs—especially the women who are building, creating, and serving in quiet but powerful ways. They are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods, showing us strength, beauty, and resilience in everything they do.

Through AHG Cares, our philanthropic arm, we host major events like Bellevue’s New Year’s Eve Night Market, which attracted over 9,000 attendees in 2024, and AHG Has Your Back, our annual back-to-school drive providing packs and supplies to underserved children.

FROM CIVIL ENGINEER TO NYFW MODEL, JANNEY GWO PROVES IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START AGAIN
Janney Gwo is a testament to the power of reinvention. A professional civil engineer and local Bellevue resident, she has overcome extraordinary challenges to rebuild her life in remarkable ways.
For over a decade, Janney balanced her demanding career while caring for her late husband battling cancer, her mother with Parkinson’s, and raising two young children. After the heartbreaking loss of both her husband and mother within a few years of each other, she faced severe adrenal insufficiency and drastic weight loss, that left doctors uncertain of her recovery. Yet, she not only survived—she thrived.
Now, more than 15 years later, she is embracing new experiences and proving it’s never too late to pursue fresh passions. At 60, Janney made her runway debut at New York Fashion Week, stepping into a world she never imagined for herself.
When Janney isn’t modeling, she finds joy in her backyard homestead, cultivating organic fruits, vegetables, and her cherished flower garden. Her story is a blend of resilience, curiosity, and a commitment to living fully.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE MODELING LATER IN LIFE?
Modeling was never something I planned—it found me at the right time. I was struggling to regain weight and strength after my health challenges and felt embarrassed by how skeletal I looked. My daughter reassured me, saying I had the perfect model body without even trying. She showed me photos of supermodels online and encouraged me to get stronger and give modeling a try. That moment sparked something inside me, turning into a journey of self-acceptance—learning to embrace my appearance and present the best version of myself.
Modeling taught me that beauty comes in all forms, and we can redefine ourselves at any stage of life. It also gave me the opportunity to represent women who are often overlooked in the fashion industry. At 61, I want to show that beauty, confidence, and style have no age limit. Modeling has become more than just walking the runway or posing for a camera—it’s about breaking personal barriers, embracing life fully, and inspiring others to step outside their comfort zones.
HOW HAS YOUR JOURNEY SHAPED THE WAY YOU APPROACH NEW OPPORTUNITIES?
Surviving loss and hardship completely transformed my mindset. I’ve learned that while we can’t always control the hand we’re dealt, we can control our response to it. By shifting my focus from struggle to possibilities, I’ve opened myself up to countless opportunities. When we align with gratitude, confidence, and joy, life mirrors that energy back to us. Now, I move forward knowing that my life is my most beautiful creation, and that the universe is working in my favor. I deeply appreciate the growth, joy, and new opportunities that have emerged from life’s contrasts.
WHAT DOES BEAUTY MEAN TO YOU?
To me, beauty is all about feeling joy. For over a decade, I didn’t allow myself to feel joy—I didn’t have the time or energy to prioritize it, and I genuinely forgot what it felt like. But I’ve realized that beauty and joy go hand in hand. When I began practicing allowing joy into my life, I started to feel more beautiful. Beauty is not just about outward appearance; it’s about the way you carry yourself, the love you give yourself, and the love you allow yourself to receive.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF THIS NEW CHAPTER?
The most rewarding part has been inspiring both myself and others—especially those who have been told by doctors or society that they are limited by their circumstances. Once I started seeing myself as a new, powerful, and beautiful person, I was able to open myself up to a world of opportunities. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone light up when they realize they, too, can reinvent themselves. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that I can inspire others to break free from limitations and embrace their own potential.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO WANT TO FOLLOW THEIR DREAMS AT ANY AGE?
It’s never too late to start over or pursue something new. You’re never too old, never too sick, never too poor—it’s never too late to create the life you want. You are a powerful, resilient, and beautiful creator. With intention and dedication, you can have, be, and do anything at any age or under any conditions. Keep your focus and intentions on your new story and continue to create. The possibilities are endless!
