The Modern Gentleman

There’s a quiet shift happening in how we define what it means to be a gentleman today. It’s no longer rooted in formality or tradition alone, but in something far more personal. It’s reflected in how a man shows up each day, how he leads, how he cares for those around him, and how he chooses to invest in his time, his health, and his relationships.

In this issue, we explore that evolution through a series of stories that highlight intention, discipline, and the pursuit of a life well lived. From individuals shaping their industries with integrity and vision, to those redefining wellness, performance, and personal style, a common thread emerges. Being a modern gentleman isn’t about perfection. It’s about awareness. It’s about growth. It’s about making thoughtful choices that align with the life you want to build.

We also recognize that many of these values are first learned through the men who guide us early on. With Father’s Day this month, it feels especially meaningful to reflect on the role fathers and father figures play in shaping character. Whether through quiet consistency, hard earned wisdom, or simply leading by example, their influence often becomes the foundation for how we navigate the world ourselves.

What stands out most is that today’s gentleman is not defined by a single path. He is evolving, multifaceted, and intentional in how he moves through life. He values quality over excess, connection over status, and purpose over routine. And perhaps most importantly, he understands that success is not just measured by what he builds, but by how he lives.

As you turn these pages, my hope is that you find inspiration in these stories, whether it’s in refining your own routines, rethinking what success looks like, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the people and experiences that shape your life. Happy Father's Day!

CUSTOM HOMES • RENOVATIONS

LEADING FROM THE GROUND UP

The mindset, discipline, and relationships shaping one of the Eastside’s most trusted builders

In an industry where glossy photos of finished homes often take center stage, Stacy Eakman has quietly shifted the focus. For him, the real story isn’t just the product, it’s the people behind it. As the driving force behind Alair Kirkland, Eakman built more than a portfolio of high-end custom homes across the Eastside. He’s built a reputation rooted in trust,

“In an industry focused on the finished product, Stacy Eakman has built his reputation on something less visible but far more enduring: trust.”

transparency, and a deeply personal approach to leadership that shapes every project long before the first foundation is poured.

Eakman’s story begins far from the multimillion-dollar homes his company now delivers. Raised in Yakima, his early life was defined by baseball and a slower small-town lifestyle. That environment instilled something foundational: discipline, accountability, and an appreciation for showing up consistently. These traits would later define his leadership style. On the baseball field, particularly as a catcher, he learned how to read situations, manage personalities, and make decisions under pressure. Those lessons didn’t

stay on the diamond; they became the backbone of how he runs his business today.

His path into entrepreneurship was anything but conventional. There was no polished business plan, no safety net, just a willingness to step into uncertainty. “I had no idea what I was doing,” Stacy said, reflecting on the early days. That honesty isn’t a weakness; it’s a defining characteristic. It speaks to a leader who values growth over ego and progress over perfection. What carried Stacy through was endurance: long days, constant problem-solving, and an ability to keep moving forward even when the outcome wasn’t clear.

That mindset is captured in a simple philosophy he lives by: just keep doing the next thing. It sounds almost too straightforward, but in practice, it’s a powerful counter to the paralysis that often derails entrepreneurs. Rather than overanalyzing or waiting for perfect conditions, Eakman built momentum through action. Over time, that consistency compounded into something much larger than he initially imagined.

His entry into custom home building followed a similar pattern, and was more of a natural evolution. Starting with Eakman Construction Company, he set out with a clear mission, “I want to change the way people feel about residential construction companies”. The industry, often criticized for its lack of transparency and communication, presented an opportunity. Eakman leaned into that gap, focusing not just on craftsmanship but on the client relationship itself.

The early years were defined by tension. Like many founders, he faced the classic startup dilemma: needing experienced talent without the budget to hire it, and trying to secure projects without fully knowing if they would be profitable. It was a period of uncertainty that tested both his resilience and his instincts. But it also forced him to develop a key leadership trait, the ability to make decisions without perfect information.

A turning point came with his first fully custom home build in West Seattle. The clients took a leap of faith, trusting a builder still finding his footing. Eakman delivered, and while not flawlessly, he did it authentically. More than a decade later, that first client relationship still exists, underscoring a critical truth about his approach: for him, success isn’t transactional. It’s relational.

That perspective carried forward when his company transitioned to Alair Homes in 2022. The move wasn’t about reinvention; it was about refinement. The Alair model provided a more structured and transparent framework, aligning perfectly with Eakman’s existing values. It allowed him to scale without compromising the personal experience that had become his signature.

“Just keep doing the next thing; what sounds simple has become the foundation of a business built on resilience, consistency, and growth.”

Today, Alair Kirkland operates in some of the most competitive markets in the Pacific Northwest, including Bellevue, Kirkland, and Woodinville. The projects are larger, the expectations higher, but the philosophy remains unchanged. Growth, according to Eakman, wasn’t driven by a single breakthrough moment. It was the result of reputation, consistency, and a willingness to keep doing the work when no one was watching.

Outside of work, his priorities reinforce the same values. His son, Kason, now follows in his footsteps on the baseball field, creating a

full-circle moment that ties his past to his present. Community involvement, including projects like remodeling local treatment centers in Kirkland, reflects a broader commitment to impact beyond construction.

At its core, Eakman’s story challenges a common assumption in the building industry - that the home is the final product. In reality, he’s built something far more durable: a brand defined by trust, a team aligned around shared values, and a leadership philosophy grounded in consistency over hype.

REDEFINES WHAT A MEANINGFUL LIFE LOOKS LIKE

BEYOND

THE SUMMIT

When we first featured Andrew Hughes in our April 2023 issue, the focus was on the extraordinary, from record setting summits to remote terrain and the pursuit of what few will ever experience. This time, the story shifts inward, exploring how those experiences have shaped his perspective, values, and what a meaningful life looks like today.

For someone who has spent years navigating some of the most remote places on earth, the greatest transformation has not come from standing at the top, but from what those moments revealed long after the descent. Hughes speaks with a quiet clarity that reflects experience earned, not just through achievement, but through reflection.

Every summit, every accomplishment, he explains, is meant to teach, not define. The peaks of the past are no longer something to hold onto, but something to build from. What once felt like defining moments have become part of a larger foundation, shaping the way he approaches both the unknown and the everyday.

Returning home, that perspective does not fade. If anything, it sharpens. The contrast between expedition life and daily life has led Hughes to a realization that feels both simple and profound. A meaningful life is not reserved for the extremes. It is found in how we show up each day, in the relationships we invest in, and in the roles we grow into over time.

He speaks of friendship and family with the same reverence once reserved for summits. Becoming a father this September, he shares, feels like the most meaningful adventure ahead. It is a shift that brings a deeper understanding of responsibility, presence, and what it means to truly care for something beyond yourself.

His time in demanding environments has also shaped the way he sees others. In places where comfort disappears and conditions are unpredictable, there is little room for pretense. Discomfort reveals truth. It strips away the surface and exposes how people respond when things get hard.

In those moments, Hughes has seen how shared challenge can bring people together in unexpected ways. Differences fall away, replaced by mutual respect, vulnerability, and a quiet understanding built through experience. At the same time, those environments highlight choice. Some meet adversity with humility and empathy, while others resist or attempt to control what cannot be controlled. Those responses shape not only the outcome, but the connections formed along the way.

Perhaps the most profound shift lies in how Hughes now defines a rich and meaningful life. In a world that constantly pushes for more, more success, more recognition, more accumulation, his perspective has moved in the opposite direction.

True happiness, he explains, is not something given. It is something created from within. External achievements, while meaningful, are inherently temporary. They can shift, disappear, or fall outside of our control. What endures is something deeper, a sense of fulfillment that is rooted internally and not dependent on circumstance.

He describes it as a kind of steadiness. Like something anchored, able to move with the changing conditions of life without breaking under them. It is a mindset shaped not just by the extremes of exploration, but by the understanding that what matters most cannot be taken away. Looking ahead, Hughes remains drawn to exploration, but with a broader sense of purpose. His Peak Paddle Project continues to evolve, combining adventure with research to better understand fragile alpine environments. It is work that extends beyond the journey itself, creating impact that reaches far past the expedition.

At the same time, he is building ventures that reflect that same philosophy, focused on how people engage with the outdoors and their own well-being. These pursuits require the same resilience and adaptability as any expedition, just applied to a different kind of terrain.

In many ways, Andrew Hughes’ story is no longer just about reaching the highest places on earth. It is about understanding that a meaningful life is not defined by the height of the summit, but by the depth of perspective gained along the way, and how that perspective shapes the life you choose to build next.

To follow along as Andrew’s journey continues to evolve, find him on Instagram @andrew_i_hughes and YouTube @IfitsAndrew, or visit andrewihughes.com to explore his latest projects, expeditions, and ongoing work.

MODERN MENSWEAR, ELEVATED.

ANNETTE DRESSER, INDEPENDENT LUXURY CUSTOM STYLIST WITH J.HILBURN, ON HOW MEN ARE REDEFINING STYLE THROUGH EASE, VERSATILITY, AND INTENTION

In today’s world, time has become the ultimate luxury. For many men, getting dressed is simply one more decision in an already full day, and increasingly, one they would rather not overthink.

The clients I work with are not looking for more options. They are looking for trusted direction. More often than not, I hear, “You decide,” or “Just set me up.” They want a wardrobe that works seamlessly with their lifestyle, one that eliminates guesswork while still reflecting who they are.

The Bellevue client is often balancing a demanding schedule filled with work, travel, and social commitments. He values efficiency, but also wants to look polished, current, and appropriate in every setting. That is where styling shifts from being about clothing to being about clarity, confidence, and consistency.

With decades in the luxury fashion industry and years spent building a top performing custom business, my approach is highly personalized, centered on fit, function, and versatility. I anticipate where my clients are going, what they need, and how they want to show up, often before they even ask. The result is a wardrobe that saves time, reduces excess, and simply works.

Men’s style today is more versatile than ever. Where wardrobes were once clearly divided into business, casual, and travel, they are now far more integrated. This evolution reflects a move away from rigid, occasion based dressing toward pieces that adapt seamlessly throughout the day. Softer tailoring, lighter construction, and a focus on comfort have redefined what it means to be well dressed. Today, it is less about formality and more about ease, refinement, and intention.

One of the most defining shifts is the rise of elevated casual. This is not about dressing down, but about dressing with purpose. A shirt jacket can replace a traditional sportcoat, a hybrid blazer offers structure with a more relaxed feel, and elevated trousers or premium denim can be styled with tailored layers for a look that feels both refined and effortless.

Versatility is key. I often build wardrobes starting with one exceptional fabric, creating multiple pieces that can be worn across different settings, from a full suit to a sportcoat or a more casual layer. I am especially drawn to fabrics that offer depth and flexibility, with subtle texture and a refined, understated palette. This approach allows clients to pack less, buy more intentionally, and remain prepared for nearly any occasion.

Modern tailoring is no longer about structure alone. It is about proportion, movement, and how a garment lives on the body. Custom-made clothing allows each piece to be built for the individual, resulting in a look that feels effortless, refined, and distinctly personal.

For the Bellevue man, the focus is on investing in versatile, well cut pieces that transition effortlessly between settings. When those foundations are in place, getting dressed becomes simple, efficient, and quietly confident.

When a man knows he looks good and does not have to think about it, everything changes. Because today, the real luxury is not having more options. It is knowing everything is already handled.

How many of us remember the old slogan “No pain, no gain”? The implication being, if you’re not spending hours sweating and grunting in the gym, you won’t see results. The modern man (and woman) is offered a new option - AI-assisted biohacking that personalizes your workout and recovery, optimizing results and ensuring your time is used efficiently. Upgrade Labs is the creation of Bulletproof Coffee founder Dave Asprey, “to help people get better results in less time and keep them.”

“Each client gets a cell health analysis: A two-minute process yielding 68 reference points to show what’s going on in their body.”

Bellevue Lifestyle connected with the owners of Upgrade Labs Bellevue to see what Asprey was talking about. Debra Arend and Kevin DeLashmutt have long enjoyed the use of home wellness devices; “25 years ago, a chiropractor told me about red light therapy. It was one beam of light in this device, going into my knee which had been bothering me. I ended up buying it - I’ve been a device junkie for years - and that’s how Kevin and I began learning about biohacking,” says Arend. Seeing the value of that opportunity for others as well, they opened an Upgrade Labs,

“Where we now have the most therapeutic Photobiomodulation Bed available.”

When a member joins Upgrade Labs, an interview process determines their goals and the frequency they can come into the center. Each client gets a cell health analysis; a two-minute process yielding 68 reference points to show what’s going on in their body:  Body fat, skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat, extracellular water, and more. A score is given based on the client’s age and sex, then the center creates a protocol to help them reach their goals, utilizing the equipment that best fits the individual.

The client chooses whether to use available AI features. “For example,” DeLashmutt explains, “We have an AI bike that’ll increase your VO2 max 12.5% if you use it twice a week for two months.” (The Cleveland Clinic defines VO2 max as how much oxygen the body can absorb and use while expending maximum effort in a workout). “That’s an eight-minute ride where you’re mostly pedaling slowly, with two 10-20 second sprints when you give your all, replicating how the body is designed to operate - foraging in the woods and running from tigers. Your workout is done

“Members utilize devices like The Big Squeeze, a lymphatic drainage system similar to manual lymphatic massage, but all mechanical and highly precise.”

in eight minutes, replacing a 50-minute spin class you do five times a week.” The AI component learns your performance metrics during three rides and customizes each ride thereafter.

An AI Movement Trainer mimics the benefits of classes like yoga and Pilates. On-screen instructors run through the exercises, and it’s gamified: You can race, swim, or kayak. The AI Strength Trainer measures movement, strength, and more.

A typical workout after that is a 15 to 20 minute full-body routine replacing 90 minutes in a gym, without breaking a sweat. Adds Arend, “Members come in their work clothes, they’ll come in between meetings in a button-down shirt, do their strength training and go back to the office.”

In addition to strength and endurance, many clients join Upgrade Labs for recovery or to counteract the aging process. They utilize devices like The Big Squeeze, a lymphatic drainage system similar to manual lymphatic massage, but all mechanical and highly precise. For post-hike soreness, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy introduces an electromagnetic field to

boost recovery at the cellular level. “The technology for this treatment originated with thoroughbred race horses,” Arend mentions, “Many medical and performance modalities began in veterinary care for high-performance animals.”

The Metabolic Trainer is the go-to device for stopping the clock. It’s a CPAPlike mask worn on the face, with a heart rate monitor on the finger that measures blood oxygen. By alternating hypoxic and normoxic states for four cycles over thirty minutes, it helps your body use oxygen more efficiently.

Many more devices at Upgrade Labs help the modern gentleman optimize his health and wellness, and the technology tracks progress and helps members adjust as needed. Says Arend, “We have white glove service in providing support every step of the way, including retesting. We ask all our members to retest on the cell health analysis monthly to see the changes happening in their bodies.” Bellevue Lifestyle readers are invited to visit Upgrade Labs across the street from the Bravern and learn about their own bodies’ metrics.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

Nice? Is Whiskey On Ice

In speaking to Whiskey lovers (most happen to be men, but do accept me in their brethren as a fellow enthusiast, writer, and educator), I’ve learned a great many opinions on how to drink Whiskey. Specifically, preferences on adding water and ice vary greatly.

A brand ambassador that I had the privilege of listening to recently said the obvious: both dilution and temperature change when you add ice, so if you are going to add something, a little water is best. I personally prefer to use a water dropper, so I can add one drop at a time until I get to the desired taste.

THE BEST WAY TO ENJOY YOUR WHISKEY: ON THE ROCKS, ROCK, NEAT, OR WITH WATER

HERE ARE THE DIFFERENCES:

Rocks: Provides the highest rate of dilution as a lot of ice melts quickly. If you are drinking a barrel proof Whiskey, it kind of defeats the purpose as the distiller didn’t add water as they do in every other type of finished Whiskey.

On the Rock: is the slowest to melt and thought to be the most aesthetic. It’s nice if you want to stretch out your tasting. I often order on the rock if I want my drink to last longer.

Neat: This is the way single malt Scotch is served at a tasting event, in a branded Glencairn or Neat glass so that proper nosing for aromas can be achievedand a dram of Scotch, smaller than an ounce, fits in them perfectly.

Water: As I mentioned above, quoting the brand ambassador, a little water is better for a fine Whiskey over any kind of ice. Often, if ordered with water, the water is served in a separate vessel on the side so you can add in as much as you want.

Quoting another expert on the subject, Richard Paterson of The Dalmore famously and enthusiastically demonstrates in his Scotch classes how to drink single malt Scotch Whiskey: Paterson fills a lowball glass to the rim with ice, adds Scotch and then ceremoniously throws it over his shoulder onto the carpet of the classroom –because that much ice makes the drink worthless. One more quote, never “add green tea or milk to Whiskey. You can add a little water, but not a lot of ice.”

Ultimately, the reason we add ice can be for aesthetics, to stretch out the time spent on one glass, for cooling, and for dilution. However, the number one reason enthusiasts add water is … drumroll please … because adding a little water actually opens up a Whiskey to show more aromas and flavors.
