The Explore Issue
Summer is nonstop activity in our household. I think we are making up for all the rainy days cooped up inside and it’s a scramble to squeeze it all in during these few short months. There’s almost an anxiety about it all – or is that just me? I guess that goes to show we have a lot of options here in the PNW to explore during these summer months.
July is our ‘Explore’ issue, and it was fun to put together because I got to actively participate in about 75% of it. Check out page 18 for a few road trip ideas – all of which I had the fun of experiencing. I’ve lived here nearly my entire life and have never seen anything like Earthlight Villas. The views are truly breath taking and from my understanding these villas book quickly, so act now if you want to visit soon. I also enjoyed driving to these locations testing out the vehicles on page 26. If you’re someone that likes long roads and scenic drives, there are so many fun options to consider these days, including a ton of EV’s if that’s more your thing.
Staying healthy and fit all summer long is also a goal many of us share. Pure Barre has been a long time favorite of mine (I used to teach years ago!), and I loved catching up with the owner, Katie Wallis, on page 22. She now owns four locations, and she explains the four different class options – there is something for everyone!

The beautiful 50.5-mile long lake provides plenty of opportunity to enjoy water-skiing, jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, tubing and cruising. It’s no wonder Lake Chelan is deemed “boater’s paradise”. In addition, discover numerous smaller lakes and waterways nearby. When her husband was scheduled to travel to Florida for work, local options trader Olivia Chang, tagged along with the couple’s two children to visit Disney World. She had visited Disneyland in Anaheim and Tokyo as a child, and seen EPCOT (one of the four Disney World parks) heavily featured on ABC Family programming growing up, which made her want to visit.
“Disney World is massive, like a Disney city,” says Chang. The family was able to visit
the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and EPCOT parks, but plans to visit Hollywood Studios were derailed by the Walt Disney World Marathon and ensuing traffic.
Their Disney property hotel allowed them access to the parks a half hour before they opened to the public, a crucial benefit. Chang mentions that the Disney World tram and shuttle systems make travel between the hotel and parks easy, and Magic Kingdom was accessible by boat from their hotel. Maximizing one’s time in the parks requires a level of strategy, as wait times for rides can be hours long. Chang’s family used the Genie+ service to spend less time in line.
Chang loved seeing how much fun Disney World was for her kids; with the constant stimulation they seemed to have endless energy. Highlights included the Avatar Flight of Passage ride in Animal Kingdom and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT. “It’s like a 4D, technologically advanced roller coaster,” she says, “The wait time is pretty nuts for that one.”
Of Disney World, Chang says, “I would visit again in a heartbeat. I’ve been a Disney fan for a long time, and it was everything I thought it would be.”

Meet Bellevue Deputy Mayor: Mo Malakoutian
Mo Malakoutian was elected to the City Council in November 2023, for a four-year term starting in 2024. At his first meeting, his colleagues elected him Deputy Mayor for 2024 and 2025. Bellevue Lifestyle caught up with Mo to learn more about his journey.
WHAT LED YOU TO BECOME DEPUTY MAYOR OF BELLEVUE?
My journey into civic engagement has been a natural progression, rooted in my deep-seated commitment to giving back to the communities I call home. From a young age, I felt driven to expand my circle of impact by contributing positively to society. This journey began with my involvement in various nonprofits, including the Boys and Girls Club and Tree House after moving to the US. For the past eight years, I’ve dedicated my efforts to Wellspring Family Services, a local nonprofit focused on preventing family homelessness.
My journey took an unexpected turn when I received a letter regarding a significant remodeling project in my condo association. Drawing upon my background in construction, I joined the condo association’s board amidst this large-scale renovation project and leveraged my engineering and construction expertise for the community’s benefit. This experience served as a bridge between my non-profit work and a broader civic engagement. I felt empowered to explore how I could contribute on a larger scale. I participated in the Bellevue Essentials program, an 11-week introduction to civic leadership initiated by a former MBA classmate, and from there I seized the opportunity to serve on the Planning Commission for 6.5 years, channeling my construction, engineering, and family homelessness knowledge to address community needs.
While I was motivated by others to pursue a seat on the council, I hesitated to challenge incumbents until an opening emerged in 2023. With encouragement from a departing council member who believed in my potential to effect positive change, I took the leap and officially entered the race.
In the first council meeting after being inaugurated, my fellow council members elected me as Deputy Mayor. This unexpected honor motivated me even more to serve the people of Bellevue and amplifying their voices in local governance.

WHAT LED YOU TO GLOWLIGHT MED SPA?
Katie: Over the last decade my career focus was Cardiology and treating chronic heart conditions where I developed a deep understanding of treating illnesses, but I found my true passion was helping people prevent illnesses before they start.
