If 'Conundrum' were a style Style manifests itself in many ways. Correction: style manifests itself in everything we do. There’s no need to list them all here; they’d fill this month’s issue, cover-to-cover. But I will point out one type of style, just to make a point. (No, I’m not talking about hairstyles. I quit that a looooong time ago.) I’m referring to fashion. For me, fashion is more of a whimper than a statement. Basically, my wardrobe consists of khakis, cargo shorts and T-shirts sporting the names and logos of obscure bands. Compare that to Jamie Atlas, the sharp-dressed woman who is my glorious bride. She’s worked in the fashion industry her entire career, first as a retail buyer and the last couple of decades in higher education where she’s now an assistant dean at Belmont’s O’More College of Architecture & Design. The juxtaposition between the two of us could not be more striking. On top of that, I’m the publisher of Bellevue City LifeSTYLE. If ‘conundrum’ were a style, I’d have few peers. Fortunately for our readers and ad partners, our annual Style Issue is jam-packed with stories that will inform, engage and entertain. Judy Beaudin will show you how to set a stunning table that will impress your guests as the summer season draws to a close. Social media content creator Taylor Love offers helpful hints and tips for creating a fall floral bouquet. There’s nothing quite like gathering around the table with the people I love the most. Creating an environment that makes everyone feel special is one of my favorite parts of our get togethers. When I can, I like to take a little time to dress up the table just a smidge more than usual. I want it to make everyone excited to take a seat, dive into some great food, and know how glad I am that they’re here. I’ll be entertaining my favorite people this Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of summer. We’ll be celebrating in our favorite way with plenty of grilling, eating, corn holing, fly swatting, and sipping of cold beverages. I bet you have some version of the same plans. It’s also a time for us to pay tribute to the people who over a century ago contributed to America’s prosperity. Inspire a little patriotism on the party table by subtly weaving in some red, white, and blue touches. You don’t have to be that on theme or spend a lot of money to create an atmosphere that honors our nation’s heritage. Arrange blue hydrangeas or red roses from the grocery store in vases you already have. Tie basic white cloth napkins with red ribbon. Use the “good” plates and glasses to make things a little more special. Serve a fabulous meal. Most importantly, keep in mind these are the things that draw your guests in and show you care, but the good time and laughs will be what they remember most.

FAREWELL TO SUMMER SALAD MAKES 6 SERVINGS A fresh and bright addition to a patriotic gathering, this salad celebrates the final fruits and vegetables of the season. It makes the perfect side dish for grilled meats, fish, or even burgers. INGREDIENTS: • 6 cups mixed salad greens • 1 ½ cups cubed watermelon • 1 ½ cups sliced strawberries • 1 cup blueberries • 6 asparagus spears, blanched and sliced into 2-inch pieces • ¾ cup crumbled goat or feta cheese • 1/2 cup toasted sliced almonds • Honey Basil Vinaigrette DIRECTIONS: Toss together salad greens, fruits, and asparagus. Gently toss in goat or feta cheese and almonds. Serve with Honey Basil Vinaigrette.

HONEY BASIL VINAIGRETTE MAKES 1 CUP INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup packed fresh basil leaves • 3 tablespoons honey • ¼ cup white balsamic vinegar • 1 ½ tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallot • ½ teaspoon salt • ¼ teaspoon pepper • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil • ¼ cup vegetable oil DIRECTIONS: In a blender, combine all ingredients except oils. Blend on high until nearly smooth. Slowly pour in oils while blender is running. Blend until smooth.

There's something about the first crisp mornings of fall that makes me want to freshen up every corner of the house. One of my favorite ways to do that is with fresh flowers and floral arranging. They instantly make your home feel warm, inviting, and ready for the season. Creating a beautiful DIY arrangement is much easier than most people think.

START AT A FLOWER MARKET (OR TRADER JOE'S!)

If you're local to Nashville, one of my favorite places to shop is Import Flowers. Their seasonal selection is incredible this

time of year, and you'll find so many unique varieties you won't always see at a grocery store. Trader Joe's is another favorite for beautiful, affordable flowers. Both have incredible pricing, and with a creative eye, you can go far.

STICK TO A SEASONAL COLOR PALETTE

For fall, I love mixing warm oranges, buttery yellows, deep reds, soft blush pinks, and rich greenery. The colors don't have to match perfectly; they just need to feel like they belong together.

CHOOSE A FOCAL FLOWER FIRST

Every arrangement needs one flower that steals the show. I built these arrangements around stunning dahlias that scream fall. Once you've picked your focal flower, the rest of the bouquet comes together much more easily.

PAIR STATEMENT FLOWERS WITH BUDGET-FRIENDLY BLOOMS

One of my favorite floral secrets is mixing a few statement blooms with affordable filler flowers like chrysanthemums or carnations to create a full, layered arrangement without breaking the budget.

MY BIGGEST TIP

Remove the leaves from the lower portion of each stem before arranging. It instantly makes the bouquet look cleaner and more polished.

CREATE HEIGHT AND MOVEMENT

The prettiest arrangements aren't perfectly symmetrical. Let some stems sit taller, allow greenery to spill over the edges, and embrace those natural imperfections—they're what make an arrangement feel alive. At the end of the day, flower arranging isn't about perfection. It's about slowing down, getting creative, and bringing a little bit of fall into your home. Put on your favorite playlist, pour yourself a warm drink (or iced tea if you're in the South- ha!), and enjoy the process.

When it comes to trendy architecture and stylish homes, Nashville is known for its modern new construction, but home design goes way back in Nashville’s history. In fact, in the heart of Bellevue is a gem of historical significance in Percy Warner Park: the 1811 House. Formerly referred to as the Hodge House after the family that built it, the 1811 House sits nestled in the trees of Percy Warner Park facing Chickering Road. The house was built in approximately 1811 and passed through their family tree for generations. Eventually the house and the 49 acres of land around it ended up being sold to the city to become part of the park in the late 1920s.

“It is a log house with a frame addition,” says Friends of Warner Parks Historian Bob Parrish. “It is the oldest structure in the Warner Parks and was a contributing structure for the park’s listing in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.” With a traditional design, the two-story white ash log house’s exterior features two chimneys and early 20th century porches. The interior includes a working fireplace along with rustic wood floors and walls. Almost two decades ago, Metro Parks along with Friends of Warner Parks worked to repair the house that had started to deteriorate due to age, going to great lengths to preserve the original logs in the house’s reconstruction.

“In recent years, the Friends of Warner Parks has funded numerous improvements including fencing, a rustic pavilion, and interior enhancements.”

“The house was dismantled and carefully reconstructed in 20072008, with funding provided primarily by the Metro Parks and Recreation Department,” says Parrish. “The skilled contractor was Grau General Contracting LLC. In recent years, the Friends of Warner Parks has funded numerous improvements including fencing, a rustic pavilion, and interior enhancements. Friends of Warner Parks and Metro Parks are working with the Metro Historical Commission on a dendrochronology research project that should reveal information about the tree species used and the age of the logs.” The historical marker associated with the house does detail a dark aspect of its past. “According to an 1833 will, the Hodge-Northern family enslaved at least 14 people here.” Through all of the change and development in Nashville, this historic property has remained in the West Nashville landscape. It now serves as an event space in the community that can be rented for various purposes. With a maximum capacity of 50 people, the 1811 House is available for small events, meetings, and commercial photo shoots. Before Alan Robinson painted his first house, he painted canvases. And when he traded his easel for a ladder, he brought all of his artistic insight along with him. For some 20 years now, he’s been brushing his talent on the walls of Bellevue and beyond. The difference is in the details, and that’s why he’s come to be known as “Nashville’s Most Trusted Brush.” "He takes everything through a painter's lens — not a house painter, an actual artist," says his wife, Beth Robinson, who helps run the family business. "He sees all the details, all the things that need to be fixed, all the things that could go wrong." This shows up with color first, which anyone who has stood in front of the paint section at Home Depot staring at 40 different whites can understand. "He can see, in his mind's eye, with the shade of the room, how the sun comes in — all the things that are going to affect the color," says Beth. This is a lesson I know all too well, having just color-drenched my new bedroom in a Pinterest-inspired shade that looked fabulous in the photo, but now looks like what can only be described as the inside

of a colon. My griping during this interview led to an honest conversation with Alan about what went wrong, and what needs to change. Don’t worry, I’ll share his tips. "He's meticulous, and he's a perfectionist," says Beth. "He sees the things where somebody else is just going to say, 'Yeah, that's the color,' and put it on the CONTINUED >

wall — and then you're standing there thinking, that doesn't look the way I thought." Robinson's work runs the full range: interiors, exteriors, decks, fences, cabinets, and more. His trained eye can help achieve goals for clients that seem impossible. For a home in Kingston Springs, he turned a plain surface into a distressed fireplace and reworked a set of white kitchen cabinets into a soft, distressed green, cutting texture into the finish with a five-in-one tool. "I remember watching him and thinking, 'How are these browns and greens going to work together?'" says Beth. "By the end, it was a piece of art." Not every job calls for that. Some clients just want clean walls in a hurry, trusting a dependable neutral like Agreeable Gray or Greek Villa. Others want to get it exactly right with a specific vision in mind. Robinson's service flexes between the two, with as much or as little guidance as a client wants. “Alan has become a concierge painter," says Beth, "He can customize the project for each client's needs. Some people want that, and some people don't, and that's OK." The Robinsons are a Bellevue family through and through — a blended family with six kids ages six to 22. A Confession From the Writer’s Own Bedroom When I sent the Robinsons photos of my colon bedroom, he offered a handful of things to think about when repainting or redecorating. 1. Layered lighting. Natural light and lamplight are two different animals. Make sure you’re accounting for all hours of the day and all of the lighting layers you intend to have before you commit. 2. Accents. Your walls don’t live alone. They come alive with picture frames, a comforter, curtains, and even the floor. Alan noted my gold-framed art was getting lost against the brown, and that a darker brown or black would help create contrast between the paint and the accents. 3. Style. Paint color does fall into a design category: modern, antique, farmhouse, etc. Pick a lane for the whole room so the color, the finishes, and the furnishings all work together to help you achieve your goal.

For years, the rule was simple. Pick a palette, pick an aesthetic, and let it carry through every room. The all-white kitchen led to the all-white living room led to the all-white everything. That era is over. The most interesting homes right now are doing something braver. They’re letting each room hold its own mood. What ties them together isn’t a single look. It’s the materials they keep coming back to: warm brass, sculptural lighting, marble, stained wood, and quiet neutrals holding it all together. We toured one home that gets it exactly right, and pulled out ideas worth borrowing.

1. RESORT ENERGY Outdoor rooms designed with the rigor of interiors. This isn’t a backyard. It’s a destination. From the lined-up lounge chairs to the scalloped umbrellas to the green-striped pillows repeating across the deck. The lesson here is to stop treating outdoor furniture as an afterthought. Pick a palette and commit.

3. MOODY MODERN Dark dining rooms are back, and better than ever. Bold taupe walls, an oval black table, sleek chairs, and an oversized round mirror standing in for art. The bright, airy dining room had its decade. Now bring on the supper club.

2. SCULPTUR AL CALM One bold gesture in a quiet room. Everything in this great room is whispering, from the cream walls to the linen sectional to the chandelier’s delicate brass rings. And then a tree, reaching toward the coffered ceiling like it grew there on purpose. When the rest of the room is quiet, the boldest thing you can put in it is something alive.

4. WAR M MODER N The all-white kitchen meets warm wood. Cream cabinetry stays, because the light it gives you is hard to beat. But the island gets a stained wood treatment that grounds the whole space. Brass pendants and hardware add glow. Velvet stools soften the lines. This is the kitchen the next decade is building toward.

6. BUILT FOR PLAY Rooms that don’t apologize for being fun. A game table under a crystal chandelier. A leather club chair next to a telescope. A theater tucked in around the corner. The best entertaining spaces are the ones built for actual use, not just for looking at.

5. THE JEWEL BOX Small spaces, big swing. Antiqued mercury glass, a brass faucet, fluted glass cabinets, golden pulls on crisp white shakers. The idea is to treat your tucked-away corners (bars, powder rooms, butler’s pantries) as the place to take your most theatrical swing. The smaller the room, the bolder you can be.

7. COLOR COCOON Saturated color in rooms meant for rest. Deep sage-spruce walls, ivory bedding, an antiqued mirror catching the shutter light. Proof that calm doesn’t have to mean beige. Color, used right, is the most restful thing you can put in a room. Find your shade and let it hold you.
