LIFESTYLE LETTER
Food, Fun & Frivolity It’s not unusual to find food and/or beverage feature stories in any given issue of Bellevue City Lifestyle. But every October we cast all pretenses aside and let culinary creations and libations take center stage. The timing couldn’t be better. Temperatures are moderating, fall break is imminent, and with Halloween approaching, it’s a festive time of year. I’ve gone as far as to claim that October is the unofficial start of the holiday season. Which makes this the ideal month for our annual Food & Drink issue. Rather than recipes and restaurants, we’re trying to take a slightly different approach this year by leaning more into the social aspects of food and drink. We’ll take you on a tour of some of Bellevue’s favorite coffee shops. Then we’ll stop by RED Wine & Spirits for their advice on seasonal spirits. What’s mahjong got to do with food? Well, inherently, not much! But this centuries-old game is experiencing a renaissance of sorts and there are many places to play in and around Bellevue. And where mahjong is played, food and beverage can’t be far away. And let’s not forget our canine companions. We’ll take you inside Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming where the bright and colorful treats will be the perfect reward for Fido following his/her salon visit! October. Quite possibly the best month of the year. Let’s have some fun! Bellevue City Lifestyle is available for pickup at the following locations: • Bellevue YMCA • Ford Ice Center • Nashville Public Library–Bellevue Branch

MAHJONG BRINGS COMMUNITY, FUN & FRIENDSHIP TO BELLEVUE
Although you hear it frequently today, mahjong is more than just a buzzword. This historic game is finding its place among all ages, many who become lifelong players. With its roots in 1800s China, mahjong today can be found around the world, including Bellevue. With more than 40 variations, there’s a version for everyone. And while the game itself provides much excitement, the attraction of mahjong goes far beyond its colorful tiles. While mahjong in Tennessee is growing, we have Texas to thank, as it is often documented as the U.S. "birthplace" of the game's recent high-glamour national revival. Stacey White, founder of The Mahjong House in Houston and one of the entrepreneurs helping fuel the game’s modern resurgence, offers insight into why mahjong is experiencing such a powerful comeback, including in both Davidson and Williamson counties. “Mahjong gives people permission to be fully present,” says White. “You can’t scroll your phone and play at the same time. Playing mahjong demands your attention, which is such a relief in a world that’s constantly pulling us in 10 directions. The real draw is connection. It’s a reason to sit down face-to-face with people on a regular basis, and that kind of consistency is rare now. It becomes less about the game andmore about who you’re becoming with the people across the table from you.” And thanks to increased interest, mahjong is going beyond the average living room. “Mahjong is showing up in places it never used to: Hotels are hosting mahjong retreats and lessons, restaurants are hosting mahjong nights, and it’s becoming a real ‘third place’ the way coffee shops or fitness studios have been,” White says. “It’s not just a game anymore; it’s a lifestyle and a gathering point.”

Bellevue's council woman, Sheri Weiner, is a third generation mahjong player. "I taught my 10-year-old grandson how to play, and he's been playing for almost a year now," she says. "I learned when I was that age, my mom and grandmother taught me. I'll never forget watching my mother and her friends play." Weiner says there are a lot of neighborhood games. "You have two different categories of people, people that really love to get into the competitiveness of the tournament play that follow National Mahjong League rules," she says. "And then there are some folks who prefer to have their own house rules that we call table rules. So there are nuances as to how you start a game. That's just the culture of the game for these house games. In many cases, these groups of women and/or men become your circle of friends." When looking at the game’s colorful tiles–ranging between 136 and 152 tiles per set–it can be quite confusing to figure out how to play and win. But instructor Liza Gaston, owner of Mahj Madness in Franklin, said there’s no need to feel overwhelmed. “Although there are many rules in mahjong, people of all ages can learn to play,” she said. “I've had students from eight years old to almost 100 years old. Do not get discouraged or give up. The principals and game play will come together quickly once you learn the tiles and the rules and start to play.” And once you start, you may find it challenging to stop. “Once people begin to play mahjong, they easily understand why others are so passionate about the game,” Gaston said. “Mahjong has become popular because it brings old friends and new acquaintances together to engage in a game that combines luck, strategy and skill.” Perhaps the best part of mahjong is anyone can play at any time. “You don’t need any experience to start, and it’s genuinely never too late to learn,” White says. “It’s a strategic, quick-moving game that keeps your brain sharp, and it’s just as likely to be played by a 28-year-old at a happy hour as it is by someone’s 80-year-old aunt. The community it builds spans every generation, and that’s the part that tends to surprise people the most.”

Celebrating its 15th year in business this fall, Red Spirits & Wine is one of Bellevue's most enduring independent retail success stories. Customers visit three or four times a week because a trip there is part of their social calendar. And according to general manager Eric Nichols, the store has evolved considerably over the years and included a change in ownership, a loosening of liquor laws in Tennessee and a shift in the spirits landscape. The original ownership group set out to be, as Nichols puts it, "more of the Whole Foods of the retail spirits industry as opposed to the Kroger." The goal was to be "a little nicer, a little bit more upscale without being foo-foo-y or bougie." Even the name was intentional. Putting spirits before wine — Red Spirits & Wine rather than the conventional wine and spirits

— was a deliberate creative decision made to distinguish the brand from the very first moment a customer had to say it out loud. "There was an intentional inversion of the order on those just to make it a more distinct thing to have to say so that you'd actually have to think about saying spirits and wine instead of wine and spirits," Nichols says. Ask Nichols what truly sets Red Spirits & Wine apart and he will tell you, "The most consistent thing we hear from our customers is that they just like the hospitality of the place," he says. Job applicants frequently cite the atmosphere as their reason for applying. "Everybody just seems like they like working here," is the phrase he hears most often. The wine team has earned a reputation for genuine expertise and honest guidance. The staff at Red practices what Nichols calls "micro branding" or curated, personal suggestions based on what each customer actually enjoys. "Our crew's really good at just helping the customers find the absolute best dollar for dollars that they're going to get," he says. The store's wine director brings an additional dimension to the operation: an extensive background in fine tobacco. Three cigar humidors also draw customers who come for nothing else. The store also boasts one of only two growler stations in Nashville — sixteen draft taps from which customers can purchase fresh draft beer to go. "You can purchase draft beer to go," Nichols says. "You can't drink it while you're in the store, but you can purchase it to go fresh off the tap." As the seasons shift and the air in Middle Tennessee finally begins to cool, Red Spirits & Wine leans into the flavors that define autumn. Pumpkin beer, once a strictly seasonal novelty, has become so popular that it now arrives on shelves as early as August. Leading the charge is Schlafly, a Midwest brewery that Nichols credits with single-handedly reviving the category. "They are probably the largest producer of pumpkin ale," he says. "Schlafly was undoubtedly the brewery that reignited pumpkin beer in this country." The store typically carries at least a dozen different pumpkin beers by the time fall is fully underway, including pumpkin ales, pumpkin stouts, pumpkin porters. "It kind of, I think, almost tastes like brewed pumpkin pie," Nichols says of the Schlafly offering. CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B E L L E V UE T N

“EVEN THOUGH I’VE BEEN IN THE BUSINESS A LONG TIME AND I’VE TRAVELED IN WINE COUNTRY IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT PARTS OF EUROPE AND SOUTH AMERICA,” HE SAYS, “I’M JUST REALLY LOOKING FOR THE THING THAT I CAN PAY $20 OR LESS FOR THAT JUST REALLY OVER-DELIVERS.”
General Manager Eric Nichols
Apple, the season's other signature flavor, shows up primarily through cider, a category that has grown considerably in recent years. Apple vodkas round out the offering for spirits drinkers looking for that crisp, autumnal edge. Beyond the fall seasonals, Nichols has been watching two categories in particular gain serious momentum through the summer and into the fall: mezcal and high-end rum. Mezcal, tequila's smokier, more complex agave-based cousin, has exploded from a niche curiosity into a legitimate category at Red Spirits & Wine. "10 years ago in this market, if you went in a store, if they even had mezcal, they might have one, and it was usually a cheap one," Nichols says. Today, the store carries roughly two dozen mezcals, reflecting a shift in customer sophistication and curiosity that has accelerated notably in recent years.
22
H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
High-end rum is enjoying a similar moment. "Nicer rums are also enjoying a little bit of a bounce and interest," Nichols says. Both categories offer something that the bourbon-saturated market of recent years sometimes hasn't: genuine surprise and discovery for a customer ready to venture somewhere new. As for Nichols himself? His personal go-to remains wine — specifically red wine, consumed with food, chosen for value as much as quality. "Even though I've been in the business a long time and I've traveled in wine country in several different parts of Europe and South America," he says, "I'm just really looking for the thing that I can pay $20 or less for that just really over-delivers." It's an honest answer from a man who has spent fifteen years helping other people find exactly that. And it speaks to what makes Red Spirits & Wine worth the visit. RedSpirits.com

WHERE TO GET YOUR CAFFEINE KICK AROUND TOWN ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON
BELLEVUE

BREWS Few things hit better than a steaming cup of something caffeinated when the weather cools down. One benefit of living in a town like Bellevue is that it’s likely still nice enough to enjoy your java in a cozy corner, on a pretty patio, or grab it to-go for an outdoor adventure. Luckily, we have a collection of coffee shops that make any of the above possible. We’ll see you around these coffee shops this fall.

CITY LIMITS CAFE & BAKERY
A Bellevue original, City Limits opened in 2002 and has been keeping locals and Highway 70 passersby fueled up with coffee and conversation ever since. I’ve enjoyed many a post-church croissant here while watching old friends catch up and neighbors bump into one another. While you can certainly enjoy a warm beverage and a breakfast pastry, don’t skip coming for lunch: Southern salads, pressed sandwiches, and breakfast staples round out the menu. CityLimitsBakeryCafe.com
CAFE SPERRY’S
You may think of Sperry’s for its salad bar, premium steaks, and tableside bananas foster, but the brand has expanded in recent years to include multiple mercantiles and a cozy coffee shop. Cafe Sperry’s has that same family-friendly, treat yourself feel as it’s sister spots, with plush seating, intentional decor, and a drive-thru window if you’re on the go. This fall, the cafe is rolling out a seasonal menu that includes pumpkin pie, s’mores, and carrot cake lattes, pumpkin chai, and blueberry pancake coffee. But the one I’m looking forward to most? An iced matcha latte flavored in honor of that famed bananas foster. This one doesn’t come on fire, though. Order. toasttab.com/online/sperr ys-mercantilebellevue-7745-highway-70-south
SUREFIRE COFFEE
If you’re looking for joe on the go, Surefire Coffee is a charming roadside coffee stand serving up tasty lattes, matcha, and some pastries if you’re hungry. With fun flavors like the Sunkissed Latte with coconut, brown sugar, and a pinch of cinnamon; or a hot blueberry donut latte that tastes like a glazed berry in the best way, there are plenty of reasons to go again and again. The Airstream is located off of Highway 100 near Kroger. SurefireCoffee.com
THE WELL
If you’re looking for a classic coffee option where you can get a good matcha latte or a trusty drip coffee, The Well anchors One Bellevue Place and is a great option for consistent caffeine. This has become a local phenomenon, with five locations in and around Middle Tennessee and one in Indiana. So next time you’re heading out to do your grocery shopping or catch a movie, swing by before or after to keep you fueled. WellCoffeeRoasters.com

EVERY DOG Has Its Day INSIDE WOOF GANG BAKERY & GROOMING, BELLEVUE’S NEW FAVORITE DESTINATION FOR PETS AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM
A good pet owner treats their animals like family. They think carefully about what goes into their food, who they trust with their grooming, and where they shop for the treats that make a tail wag. Bellevue has always been a community full of good pet owners, which is exactly why James Williams chose it as the home for his Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming (WGBG) franchise. Part specialty pet boutique, part professional grooming salon, and part neighborhood gathering spot for the dog-obsessed, Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming is a place where pets are both celebrated and pampered, We sat down with Williams to talk about what drew him to the franchise, what makes Woof Gang different, and why Bellevue turned out to be exactly the right community.
What inspired you to bring Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming to Bellevue? We had an interest to bring the WGBG services to Bellevue (West Nashville) area because we felt that the brand of our services fit
“There’s a strong human/animal bond that’s James Williams

unlike relationships among people.”
the community. The Bellevue and surrounding areas have continued to see residential growth and an increase in the pet population. We feel that WGBG provides a local neighborhood option for pet care that focuses primarily on our dog grooming services mixed with unique specialty retail products and treats. Our aim is to become a long-term member and partner with the community.
What sets Woof Gang apart from a traditional pet store or grooming salon? WGBG offers options different than the big-box pet stores with our personalized grooming experience, exclusive high-end retail products, including healthy food, and gourmet treats. Our WGBG retail associates handle the scheduling, phone calls, sales, and other administrative tasks, allowing our groomers to focus on the personalized grooming services for a better spa experience. All of our groomers are passionate about their work and love what they do. They are experienced in managing animal behaviors and committed to the health, safety, well-being, and care of all pets.
How did you personally first become involved in the pet industry? I became involved in the pet care industry as a pet owner myself. Back in 2024, I went in for a grooming experience at one of the WGBG locations in North Carolina and my personal experience was one of the best that I've had with grooming services. I began inquiring about the operations, the franchise, and opportunities to grow in the Nashville market. At the time there weren't any WGBG locations in the Middle Tennessee market. My wife and I liked the franchise opportunity and decided to partner with WGBG to open within the market. Currently, there are three in Middle Tennessee, six across the state and over 400 locations in 34 states across the U.S.
What have you learned about the special relationship people have with their pets since opening the business? This is a simple response. There's a strong human/ animal bond that's unlike relationships among people. As pet parents, we feel the heartbeat and emotion of our pets and they likewise of us. That is essentially why it's important for the WGBG spa experience to be as stress free as possible for our furry friends and a service that meets the expectations of the pet parents. CONTINUED >

Grooming can be stressful for some pets. What steps does your team take to create a comfortable, personalized experience for each dog? Our grooming services are scheduled as individual appointment similar to that of an actual salon-style spa treatment. Assigning a designated appointment for each service allows the groomer to dedicate his/her time in a stress-free one-on-one personalized pampering session. We also work to ensure that the appointment time matches the temperament of each pet. For example, scheduling dogs that are more reactive for earlier or later grooming sessions during times with fewer pets in the grooming area.
well as some health and wellness products. A lot of our customers like the unique bakery and birthday cookies and treats to celebrate birthdays and other "good boy" and "good girl" occasions. We’ve also found the natural chews and Woof Gang brand variety flavor chips to be a big hit as a training treat or snack for our furry friends.
What are your future goals or plans for Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Bellevue?
What are some of the products or treats that customers have been especially excited to discover at Woof Gang?
The goal for WGBG-B is to grow and engage locally as part of the community and become not only a local business, but to be a true neighbor within the community. We realize that pet parents entrust us with providing care to their loved ones, which for many people are often considered as part of their family. Therefore, it is important to show how we care through each grooming service or retail experience, the "Woof Gang Way."
Our store carries some unique homestyle bakery treats, all-natural treats and chews, dry and wet pet food, toys & accessories, as

EXPLORE TENNESSEE’S UNDER-THERADAR LEAF-PEEPING DESTINATIONS
ARTICLE PROVIDED BY TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF TOURIST DEVELOPMENT
Tennessee is home to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, America’s most visited national park with approximately 12 million visitors a year. Notes of orange, red and yellow hues blanket more than 800 miles of trails, providing stunning views of scenic vistas, waterfalls and forest horizons. But Tennessee has a treasure trove of more under-the-radar fall leaf-peeping destinations statewide, including right here in Middle Tennessee. Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau offers a plethora of history and harvest colors during the autumnal months. Cumberland Mountain State Park houses Crab Orchard Stone Bridge, a picturesque structure that looks straight out of a Hallmark movie. The stunning bridge dates to the late 1930s, as the largest structure ever built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Onsite, the park is also home to The Restaurant at Cumberland Mountain, seated at the edge of Byrd’s Lake, offering tranquil views. Fall Creek Falls State Park in Spencer not only offers one of the most iconic waterfall-viewing experiences in Tennessee and one of the tallest waterfalls in the Eastern U.S., but also a kaleidoscope of fall color spanning 29,800 acres, with 56 hiking trails and plenty of scenic overlooks, as well as an award-winning golf course. The park is perfect for immersing yourself in the fall landscape, offering overnight stays such as cabins, campsites or The Lodge at Fall Creek Falls for a more elevated stay. A drive along the Natchez Trace Parkway is a fall bucket-list item when road-tripping through Tennessee. This 444-mile historic corridor spans Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama, following the path that Native Americans cultivated and used by “Kaintucks”, soldiers and other settlers. The parkway offers magnificent views of Middle Tennessee’s rolling farmland and rich fall foliage. Historic sites, hiking trails, scenic overlooks and even a somber 200-year-old mystery pertaining to explorer and statesman Meriwether Lewis can be found along the way. Know before you go: The iconic Double Arch Bridge at Birdsong Hollow is closed for the fall season but is to be open to the public in Spring 2027. For the complete list of must-see destinations for autumn sightseers and fall foliage tourists, including in both East and West Tennessee, visit TNVacation.com
