Travel Trepidations

July is the month for our annual Explore issue, which leans heavily into vacations, getaways and hidden adventures right here in our hometown. It’s also the time of year that I get to recount some of my previous debacles. I mean travels.

Over the years, my family and I have been fortunate to travel to some exciting destinations. But aside from an occasional weekend excursion a few hours from home, we never did an authentic road trip. That changed last year.

I was opposed to our July jaunt to the Gulf Coast, primarily because I didn’t have a lot of enthusiasm for intentionally placing myself in the path of a potential tropical storm or worse. However, my greatest apprehension was transportation. If you’ve ever been the driver on a long journey, you’re familiar with the gnawing anxiety that comes from trying to prepare for the unexpected.

My fear stems from experience as I’ve been stranded on the side of a road hundreds of miles from home at least three times in my career. The first came when I was a mere tot and our luggage attached to the top of my family’s sweet Ford Country Squire wagon (with faux wood side panels!) blew away into the median somewhere in Pennsylvania, New York or Canada.

Years later on a camping trip with my friend and his family, I was stranded on I-75 in South Georgia for several hours on a July afternoon when a couple of tires gave way on the trailer we were towing.

Then, when I was in college, the right rear tire on my car blew out on I-64 in Illinois. I was forced into action and, without any prior experience, learned how to change a tire on the spot.

Aside from a deluge while we were approaching New Orleans, last year’s road trip was uneventful. I attribute the success to my decision to rent a large, comfy vehicle.

If you’re traveling this summer, here’s wishing you and your companions a journey and experience that’s worth remembering for all the right reasons.

McNeil’s Produce Closes

Bellevue’s McNeil’s Produce announced its closing last month after nearly 50 years in business. Owner David McNeil cites rising costs like taxes, credit card fees, gas, as the reason for the closure. Saturday, May 30 was the last day of operations for the beloved produce stand that’s been in the McNeil family for 40+ years. The McNeil’s told WKRN TV that they own the property and hope to one day be able to reopen.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

Puerto Vallarta’s

Villa La Estancia Is A Worthwhile Retreat

If you've ever looked at all-inclusive resorts and immediately thought of swim-up bars, spring break revelry, and buffet lines, Villa La Estancia in Riviera Nayarit is the antithesis. Situated in stunning Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, I whisked my mom away for a birthday trip last fall, and from the moment we arrived, it was clear this resort operates on a different philosophy.

It has an old-world feel with stunning, timeless decor and an expansive view of the Pacific. In fact, when I walked into the lobby, I said, “This is like Sperry’s on the beach.” After a weekend of eating, drinking, and lounging my way around the property, my initial assessment was only solidified.

This hybrid-model property has a mixture of owned units and vacation rentals, making it a property worthy of a second home as much as a weekend away. Here’s what you need to know before you book.

SUITE-STYLE ACCOMMODATIONS

Our suite had a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, a living room, and a balcony facing the ocean. The resort-style bathroom had a beautiful bathtub, separate shower, and

a double vanity, and there was a separate guest bath with its own shower. This made a case for never leaving your room, but trust me, you’ll want to.

The property itself is split between two sides— Villa La Estancia (ours) skewed calm and laidback, while Villa del Palmar Flamingo resort next door had more energy with families and organized fun. Both sides share amenities, which means you get twice the restaurants and pools and can choose your own adventure each day.

THE FOOD, INCLUDED

Because of Villa La Estancia’s hybrid model of owners and renters, the all-inclusive package is an optional add-on for anyone visiting. While some guests may be paying as they dine around, there’s an automatic expectation that food will be worth the purchase. And let me assure you, it was.

Dining outlets span upscale steakhouses, Japanese sushi bars, and poolside grills. For breakfast, we had beautiful parfaits, chilaquiles, and fruit smoothies. For lunch, we dined on wood-fired pizzas and mojitos beachside, or on super-fresh shrimp tacos sprinkled with avocado and citrus. For supper at La Casona (the flagship steakhouse), we had beef tenderloin, which the sommelier, Hugo, paired with a boutique Mexican wine, while a server sang opera during the pianist's breaks.

WELLNESS ADD-ONS

While you can certainly spend your time unwinding at the resort-style pools or sink your toes in the sand right on the property, Villa La Estancia has an onsite spa that shouldn’t be missed. Tatewari Spa offers a collection of packages from massages to body treatments.

I opted for deep-tissue; my mom chose a traditional relaxation massage. Afterward, we sipped aloe vera and moved through a hydrotherapy circuit: sauna, steam room, hot tub, cold plunge, cucumber eye masks, and aromatherapy wraps.

The property’s hybrid model also means Villa La Estancia offers vacation ownership options. If you find yourself thinking, "I could spend serious time here," like we did, just know that could certainly be a reality.

Now, I’m not skirting over the fact that Puerto Vallarta has been in the headlines recently. But the destination is certainly up and running and open for tourism. Just like American towns hit by natural disasters rely on visitors to get back on their feet, so do cities abroad. This summer, Puerto Vallarta is back, better, and ready to welcome guests with open arms and plenty of tequila. RivieraNayarit.villalaestancia.com

BEAT THE HEAT BY EXPLORING

Go On A Treasure Hunt This Summer At Beloved Bellevue Staple McKAY’s

Whether you’re looking for the perfect beach read this summer or crossing off titles on your summer reading list, Bellevue mainstay, McKAY’s is a trove of entertainment gold. The best  part about McKAY’s is not just the books, music, games and more that you walk out with, but rather the treasure hunt itself as you explore the aisles of pre-loved gems.

Founded in North Carolina in 1974, McKAY’s started as a family business and remains one to this day. According to the Knoxville News Sentinel and WBIR, the two owners first established the store in North Carolina, with the original store name "Edward McKay" coming from a combination of their middle names. McKAY’s website says, the store "came to

“One of the most important parts of a university is its library, so McKAY’s was originally conceived as a bookstore that would allow folks to affordably build their own home library.”

fruition when a used bookstore called ‘Edward McKay’ opened in North Carolina. Since that time, the brand split ownership, and McKAY's was born.”

The store expanded into several cities in Tennessee over the years. A Knoxville location opened in 1984 and operated until it closed earlier this year. In 1990, McKAY’s Chattanooga location was added and then the Nashville location was established in 2007. A decade later in 2017, McKAY’s acquired ownership of the ‘Edward McKay’ stores in both Greensboro and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“One of the most important parts of a university is its library, so McKAY’s was originally conceived as a bookstore that would allow folks to affordably build their own

home library,” says Rachael Poe, McKAY’s Promotions & Advertising Director. “The ‘buy, sell, trade’ model was there from the beginning, which meant that customers could keep books for as long as they wanted, or return them for credit on other books in the future–that’s where the idea of ‘free enterprise’ comes in. It’s a great way to keep books and media on the shelves of people who appreciate them.”

While McKAY’s originated as a bookstore, as the demand increased, so did its offerings. Physical media including movies, video games, and CDs were added to the store’s inventory followed by collector’s items and toys. “Now, if something is related to pop culture (like a

Star Wars mug or a Hello Kitty backpack), we’ll consider it,” says Poe. When it comes to adding locations, Poe says that they are “always evaluating opportunities that make sense for our business and customers.”

With so much change in Nashville and many independently owned businesses closing their doors, when asked what the store has done to remain a staple in the community, the answer is simple and lies at the heart of what the store was created to be.

“Everything on our shelves was brought in by customers, so McKAY’s is literally made up of the community,” says Poe. “We do our best to anticipate and respond to trends in the secondhand market, which is why we’ve started carrying items like instruments, gaming consoles, and toys throughout the years. McKAY’s is always changing and growing, and we look forward to being part of the Nashville landscape for years to come.”

“Everything on our shelves was brought in by customers, so McKAY’s is literally made up of the community.”

Running Wild

The Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon Is A Percy Warner Park Annual Tradition

If you've ever run a marathon and thought, 'You know what this needs? More hills, more roots, and a lot more soul,' then the Flying Monkey Marathon in Bellevue was made for you. Held each November in the lush, forested terrain of Percy Warner Park, the Flying Monkey has built a reputation as one of the most challenging trail marathons in the Southeast. With a course that climbs and twists, it is the kind of race that breaks you down and builds you back up, all before lunch. And year after year, runners continue to return. Some for the challenge. Some for the community. Most for both. We sat down with race

founder Trent Rosenbloom to find out what it takes to build a race that people love to suffer through.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE MARATHON .

The Flying Monkey Marathon is a small, cozy marathon that takes place in Percy Warner Park, which is one of the largest metro parks in any city in the country. It is beautiful, in the woods. It is hilly and difficult, and it's run by a community of people who really love the challenge. And the marathon raises money to support the charitable organization that helps curate and maintain the park.

WHAT'S THE STORY ABOUT HOW IT GOT ITS NAME ?

We started the marathon in 2006, and around that time in the running community, there were rumors of the legend of the dangerous flying monkeys living in the parks. We chose to embrace the legend.

WHAT MADE PERCY WARNER PARK THE RIGHT HOME FOR THE RACE?

When we created the race, we created it out of the running community as a sort of for-us, by-us race. And the community that created it was made up of a lot of people who regularly ran in the park.

WHAT'S YOUR BACKGROUND? ARE YOU A RUNNER?

I am a runner. As I've gotten older, I don't run as much as I used to. But I've run over 50 marathons and ultra marathons throughout my life.

When the marathon was first organized, it came out of, as I said, love among the running community for the park. And it was at a time when I was running a lot of marathons and when marathoning was going through a bit of a cultural boom, and so I took it on simply because it seemed to me it would be both a lot of fun and a way to give back to the parks and all my running friends.

TELL ME WHAT A TYPICAL RACE DAY LOOKS LIKE BEHIND THE SCENES. WHAT GOES INTO PRODUCING AN EVENT LIKE THIS THAT MOST RUNNERS NEVER EVEN SEE OR THINK ABOUT?

We do a little bit of work in the lead up to race day such as ordering the shirts and making sure we have all the volunteers in place, but after more than 20 years we've got it fairly well down to a routine.

On race day, we get there at about 5 a.m. before the official 8 a.m. start time. We spend the first couple of hours getting everything set up on the race course, including the eight stations where people will get support, will get fluids or sports drinks, setting up the start and finish area, and the timing area. We have an after party so we also will set up the area where the after party is.

We organize the volunteers to help the runners as they show up, pick up their bibs so that they can run the race and have that timed. As they get their bibs, they can either line up and start at the early start for the people who are slower or who are walking, who want to just take more time on the course. And then we have a competitive start at 8 a.m. for all the people who are really vying for a win or a place and a finisher's prize. Our finisher prizes are all individually handmade knit, crocheted, or quilted monkey dolls. Each one is different and the winners get their pick of what we have available in a given year.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE COURSE, BECAUSE IT HAS DEVELOPED A REPUTATION AS A PRETTY CHALLENGING COURSE. IS IT AN UNSANCTIONED RACE?

It is sanctioned. It is uncertified.

And by that I mean there's a certifying body that most road races use, USA Track & Field, either directly or through a delegate, will certify that a racecourse is the distance it says it is

And races use certification for a few reasons. One of them is if you run a certified race in under a certain time, that then qualifies you to go on and run some other race. So if you run a certified marathon fast enough, that will allow you the right to register to run the Boston Marathon, for example. It also allows you to compare a race time on one course with

“There are no comparable road race courses in the United States.”

a race time on another course. The Flying Monkey Marathons course is extremely hilly. There are no comparable road race courses to it in the United States, so having that sort of standard for comparison did not make sense.

It's a fairly small crowd of people who get to run our race every year. And in many years we don't have enough slots for everyone who wants to run it. And so we don't want people running our race because they want to qualify to run another race. We want the people coming to run the Monkey to be people who want to run the Monkey in and of itself.

HOW DO PEOPLE SIGN UP?

We do registration in the first week of August, and what folks can do is put their name in and if after that week we have too many registrants relative to the spots that we offer, we'll run a lottery. And the lottery accounts for people who have shown commitment to supporting the park or who have run the race multiple times or who have other factors that we value. And if we don't get too many runners, we'll just let everyone in. We usually do that the week of August 8.

We also have a half-marathon that takes place around the same time but on a different date, and registration for that is the same week and the same process.  We really feel like, because this is a by-runners, for-runners race that really celebrates the difficulty of the course, the beauty of the course, that it is unique. And it's one of the races that draws people back year after year, including people who otherwise don't ever run the same course or same marathon more than once. And we're very proud of our support for the Warner Parks.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL GRILLING MONTH

With Bellevue’s HoneyFire Barbeque and Co.

Honeyfire Barbeque Co.’s Ben Claybaker built HoneyFire on a deep, genuine love of the craft of barbecuing and the belief that great barbecue has the power to bring people together. “I was born in Texas and grew up in Arkansas,” says Claybaker. My hometown was 15 miles from Louisiana and 40 miles from Texas. Both sides of my family are from the South, mostly East Tennessee, Texas and Arkansas. My family also loves to travel, and the people in this country have so many great, but different barbecue traditions. We love that! So a lot of that is also represented on HoneyFire’s menu, like Alabama White sauce from Decatur, Alabama or brisket like I learned to make in Texas, and pork sandwiches that we all are familiar with here in Tennessee with coleslaw on top. We also love adding a twist to something we all love, like peanut butter in banana pudding or queso in Mac and cheese, or a smoked turkey sandwich that’s just like a Thanksgiving dinner.”

This month is National Grilling Month. “The whole summer is grilling season, and July seems to be even more heightened,” says Claybaker. Honeyfire.com
