LIFESTYLE LETTER
Embrace the normalcy I really don't have a favorite time of year. I like all of them for different reasons. And as much as I enjoy the holidays, by the time January 2 rolls around, I'm ready for them to be over. Why? Because now we're entering the longest, uninterrupted stretch of normalcy that we'll experience all year. I thrive on the routine and, with a few exceptions, that's what we have from now until Memorial Day. For the next several months the daily routine remains largely unchanged. But that's something we should welcome. Take this time to embrace the normalcy. Establish healthy habits: physically, emotionally, spiritually and professionally. It's about maintaining a sense of balance that we all want in our lives. And there's no better way to be prepared to meet the occasional bumps in the road of life - some of them more significant than others - that everyone experiences. You can read more about that in our cover story about wellness consultant Shelly O'Neal. And if you've been neglecting your personal health, this would be a good time to contact the team at About Faces And Braces. They can hook you up with a smile that matches your sunny disposition! Depending on your personal situation, you might find our stories about Encircle Acupuncture or Aster Springs Nashville worth reading. Soon enough it'll be time to travel, to spend time outside, to experience new things and to prepare for the holidays. Until then, take advantage of this long stretch of normalcy to become stronger and healthier. Because if you feel better about yourself, you'll make everyone around you better as well.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET YOUR DREAM SMILE, AND ABOUT FACES AND BRACES IS HERE TO HELP.
SAY CHEESE! 12
FAM ILY CA R E | W EL L NESS
A few years ago, a 92-year-old woman arrived at About Faces and Braces, being pushed in a wheelchair by her son. She longed for a new smile, but
“It’s never too late,” Dr. Shawn shares. “As long as your teeth, bones, and gums are healthy, you’re never too old.”
“AS LONG AS YOUR TEETH, BONES, AND GUMS ARE HEALTHY, YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD.” was never able to afford treatment for herself. Until now. Instead of turning her away, practice owner Dr. Shawn Lehman-Grimes said, “I’m your guy.” “We had balloons and roses for her when her braces came off,” says Dr. Lehman-Grimes. “She was so happy! Clinically speaking, was it a perfect result? No. But I addressed her chief concern of crooked teeth, and it was one of the most gratifying cases I’ve ever done.” Adults are unique that way, Dr. Lehman-Grimes adds, citing a lesson he learned from a mentor that stressed the importance of addressing their primary concern when it comes to treating adults. There may be an “A” option, the ideal scenario if all problems are addressed, but there’s always a “B” option that simply accomplishes the primary goal. For many adults, this may be as simple as straighter teeth as opposed to a lengthy treatment plan to achieve the ideal bite.
The team at About Faces and Braces caters to every treatment plan to the specific person, whether that’s clear aligners or a more complex overhaul. In the past, this has included putting together plans for active duty military who weren’t able to have appliances, or celebrities that need to be camera-ready at any moment. Frequently, it includes the on-the-go parent who longs for a smile change. Most cases range from six months to two years, depending on what goals are being tackled through a treatment plan. For teeth straightening alone, expect the process to last six to nine months, and treatment can start the same day as the complimentary consultation. The reason the About Faces and Braces team is able to take such a custom approach with each patient lies in the education it takes to become an orthodontist. “You become a dentist, and then you specialize,” says Dr. Lehman-Grimes. “YOU BECOME A DENTIST, AND THEN YOU SPECIALIZE.”
Drs. Shawn Lehman-Grimes and Candice Coleman
“You wouldn’t go to your podiatrist for heart surgery. We all have our specialties, our lanes, and our niches we’re good at. Orthodontists go to school for an additional three years to get their training, to specialize, and to get very good at what they do.” Orthodontists are the experts when it comes to bite alignment and tooth straightening, and they even have the potential to change the profile of the face through their treatment. Together with his business partner, Dr. Candice Coleman, Dr. Lehman-Grimes is ready to tackle your smile in four Middle Tennessee locations – including one right in the heart of Bellevue at 7518 Highway 70 South, near Sawyer Brown Road.

“Your treatment is completely customizable,” says Dr. Lehman-Grimes, sharing that financing is also available in-house if cost is a barrier. In addition to transforming smiles around town, Dr. Lehman-Grimes also hosts continuing education presentations with dental teams near and far, serves as the marketing director for the American Association of Orthodontists Insurance Company, and is a father to two girls. Dr. Whipple says that denial is a leading indicator of eating disorders. “It’s common for someone to deny that a problem exists, even when those closest to them express concern. And, if food or exercise becomes obsessive to the point that they’re ruling your life, that’s a red flag. It can lead to a cycle of other destructive behaviors.” Aster Springs can accommodate up to eight women at 7544 Old Harding Pike. The bucolic setting is ideally conducive to treatment, recovery, and successful outcomes. “The environment is beautiful. You’ll see the historic old church and recording studio up on a hill,” says Dr. Whipple. “It’s intentionally relaxing and homelike, beautifully decorated and with lots of outside light.” Treatment and counseling occur throughout the day and there is ample time in the evening to unwind and connect with others. The residence is staffed 24/7 and a nurse is always onsite or on call. AsterSprings.com/locations/Nashville

Most of us are settling into a new year filled with hope for better days ahead. But for others, the recent holiday season may have presented some unsettling realities. Perhaps you, or a loved one, weren’t fully engaged in the food, fun and festivities. It’s the type of disconnection that could be an indication of an eating disorder. “We experience higher than usual call volume in January,” says Kayla Carson, Associate Vice President of Clinical Partnerships for Odyssey Behavioral Healthcare, the operator of Aster Springs Nashville, the new residential eating disorder center in Bellevue. “Family members who haven’t been together, see each other at the holidays and notice something drastic has changed.” While eating disorders are nothing new, treatment of them has come a long way. “I believe that treatment for eating disorders is one of the most critical needs in healthcare,” says Dr. Hillary Whipple, Aster Springs’ executive director. “Since opening last summer, we’ve been able to help many women experience life-changing results.”

ON PINS and needles? ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHARON ASBY
ENCIRCLE ACUPUNCTURE ANSWERS ALL YOUR QUESTIONS.
Alexa Hulsey and Trey Brackman
We all, unfortunately, know the woes of aging all too well. One day you're moving through life without a care, and the next you’re icing your shoulder after sleeping on it wrong. Many people accept pain as a part of life, but we’re shedding light on a solution available right here in Bellevue at Encircle Acupuncture.
22
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
“Acupuncture offers so many benefits for a wide range of health conditions,” shares Alexa Hulsey, L.Ac., founder of Encircle Acupuncture. “It’s a great treatment for any type of pain, because it’s safe, non-invasive, and effective. Conditions like back pain, neck pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines and neuropathy all respond very well to acupuncture.” The benefits don’t stop there, however, as acupuncture is also an excellent solution for concerns like stress, depression, anxiety, and poor sleep. “It really helps with mood regulation, and most people find the treatments very relaxing,” Hulsey adds. “Acupuncture can also treat more complicated internal conditions such as digestive disorders, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalances and even infertility.” Hulsey opened the first Encircle Acupuncture clinic in East Nashville in 2010, returning to her home state after attending school in Los Angeles. What makes Encircle Acupuncture unique? Pricing operates on a sliding scale – ranging from $25 to $50 per treatment – in an effort to make acupuncture affordable and accessible.
“It really helps with mood regulation, and most people find the treatments very relaxing.” “We don’t do income verification or have any approval process; we trust patients to be the best judge of their own financial situation, and pay at a level that works with their budget,” Alexa adds. “We keep our rates affordable by treating patients in a community setting, which means that patients are all seated in recliners in one big open room. This gets back to the traditional ways of how acupuncture was practiced in China—an inexpensive, effective treatment that was accessible to all.” CONTINUED >

Following the success of the first clinic, Hulsey partnered with Nashville native Trey Brackman to bring the practice to Bellevue. When Brackman was 19, he accompanied his mother to an acupuncturist while she was undergoing cancer treatments, and soon, Brackman started booking appointments for himself. He saw first-hand how treatments helped his mother’s health improve, while also seeing major changes in himself. “I used to have insomnia from a very early age and acupuncture was the one thing that made a huge difference. I stopped having nightmares, and my restless sleep subsided,” Brackman shares. Together, Brackman and Hulsey opened the Bellevue clinic at 140 Belle Forest Circle in 2019, and have been helping residents experience relief ever since. During an appointment, expect a brief consultation to identify goals before treatment begins – which usually consists of inserting 10 to 20 needles targeting the patient’s concern, then relaxing, meditating, or even sleeping for about an hour. “For me, the best thing about practicing acupuncture is the connections I get to make with my patients,” Hulsey shares. “They entrust me and our team at Encircle to take care of them, and many of them are coming to us for help at a vulnerable time

Mastering the Work-Life Balance ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
BY FOCUSING ON MENTAL HEALTH, SHELLY O’NEAL IS HELPING CLIENTS REALIZE THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST
28
M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | WE LLN E SS
“
“Another factor is learning how to let go. This relates to deciding what your purpose really is and managing those expectations with your other responsibilities.”
As a wife, mother, grandmother, clinically trained psychotherapist, LCSW, entrepreneur and business owner, Shelly O’Neal, wears many hats. But it also makes her uniquely qualified to help people improve their mental health by mastering the work-life balance. O’Neal, who divides her time between Nashville and her family farm in Paducah, Kentucky, recently opened SO Wellness to do just that.
THE TERM “MENTAL HEALTH” HAS CERTAIN STIGMAS ATTACHED BUT, FOR CONTEXTUAL PURPOSES, THAT’S NOT WHAT THIS DISCUSSION IS ABOUT.
That’s exactly right. When I work with individuals and corporate entities, one of the first things I do is help them understand the importance of emotional health. This has to do with helping people organize their thoughts and regulating their emotions so that they can function, be productive and feel fulfilled. Many of my clients are already successful professionals who want to enhance career goals, improve relationships, and take on new challenges.
WHAT TYPE OF PEOPLE TURN TO YOU FOR HELP?
I see a lot of professionals who have successful careers but they’re not completely healthy. Sometimes it’s because they’ve dedicated their life to their career because they’ve always thought that’s what was expected of them. It’s not until later that they find that it’s not what makes them happy. But it’s important for everyone to know that their life experiences are never wasted, you just add to them. Your life is like a patchwork quilt. When you put the pieces together, some are prettier than others, but the result is beautiful because it’s a personal reflection of the individual.
IN YOUR WORK YOU’VE REFERENCED THE FOUR PILLARS OF WELLNESS. WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? The Four Pillars are Emotional, Physical, Spiritual and Financial. When those are foundationally strong, so is the individual. I use these four pillars when I assess and design programs for CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B E L L E V UE T N
29
companies and individuals. The good news is that most people are strong in at least one or two areas. But let’s just say that you're strong physically but not spiritually. We’re not talking so much about religion, but the importance of believing in something greater than yourself. I’ve never met a successful person who wasn’t strong spiritually.
WHY DO MANY PEOPLE FIND IT DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WORK-LIFE BALANCE?
A lot of that has to do with not knowing what balance means or how it’s measured. It’s not about money or hours; it’s about satisfaction derived from work. Ultimately, it comes down to feeling like the work you do is valuable. To be sure, balance will look different to a stay-at-home mom than it will to a career professional. Another factor is learning how to let go. This relates to deciding what your purpose really is and managing those expectations with your other responsibilities. We can’t do everything so we have to decide what’s important to hold onto, and what can be set aside.
YOU HAVE A LOT GOING ON IN YOUR LIFE. DO YOU HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING YOU’VE HAD TO SET ASIDE?
I grew up around horses and all through college I was able to ride. But I had to give that up to devote time to my career and my family. So, I made it a goal to get back to it eventually. I was finally able to do that three years ago. I have four horses on 120 acres where I can ride them and love on them. I call it my wellness ranch; it’s where I unwind and recharge.
WHAT ARE THE TRENDS THESE DAYS REGARDING EMOTIONAL WELLNESS?
I am seeing a cultural shift as people are focusing on mindful living and selective living rather than trying to accumulate stuff. But if you ask people how they want their lives to look, they have difficulty answering. At SO Wellness, I’m helping clients find what’s meaningful to them. ShellyONealWellness.com

Commemoration of The Battle of New Orleans While traditional stretching methods attempt to make you more “flexible,” we work to adjust the stretch reflex. This way, the Stretch Zone Method gradually increases your active range of motion. Consider how a car seatbelt works. If pulled too quickly, the belt locks. If the belt is forced, you are just stretching the material itself, and that’s where injury happens. When a car seatbelt is pulled smoothly and controlled, the belt will fully extend.
