LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health and Wellness This time of year is exciting because it feels like a fresh start. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue - not to mention the opportunity to tie up last year's missteps and disappointments with a bow. We approached this issue of Bellevue Lifestyle with the mindset that we wanted to provide information and inspiration to improve your physical, emotional and mental health. In these pages you'll learn about the health practices of a fourtime CrossFit Games champion, how you can better organize your home and work yoga into your daily life, and some delicious new smoothie bowl recipes. If the start of a brand-new year gives you a little nudge to make some positive changes, we toast your efforts and wish you the best of luck. May we always be grateful for the past, find joy in the present, and look forward to the future.

HEART OF A COMPETITOR

A glimpse into how Kevin Koester stays at his peak

57-year-old Kevin Koester keeps a full schedule. In addition to working full-time as the President and CEO of Apex Steel, he is a husband and father, and four-time CrossFit Games champion (2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023). A lifelong competitive athlete, Koester also owns Invictus Fitness in Kirkland, a CrossFit-based gym offering both performance and fitness tracks. He says the gym is quite diverse, with teen classes for 13+, people of varying fitness levels, and his own 78-year-old mom taking classes three times per week. “Invictus is a positive, energetic space. You’re suffering with friends, and that really creates a bond,” he says. It gives him an opportunity to give back to the community and inspire others as well. CONTINUED >

With many goals and commitments, Kevin is a master of time management. He works out during open gym at Invictus, 1-3 pm. “The mid-day break is so helpful to reset in a safe and happy space,” he says. His home, company, and gym are all in close proximity in Kirkland, so time isn’t wasted in commuting. He trains Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday in the gym, uses Thursday as an active recovery day, and likes to be athletic outdoors on Saturdays.

22

AT H LE T E LIF E | FI TNESS

In regard to his CrossFit Games championships and his successful completion of numerous other endurance races and triathlons, Koester tells us, “I’m a competitor. I like to compete - it gives me a purpose for training.” He sets goals around training for each competition. Two years ago he did a swim/run event which included six miles of open water swimming, and 18 miles of running - while tethered to his event partner, a triathlete. How has he succeeded in these grueling events so definitively? “One thing

that has given me an advantage is my mobility,” he responds. He does a Pliability program online, and asserts “I am very religious about that, and try to do it every day.” In addition to the mobility benefits, pliability promotes focus with long holds in position. Koester also does cold immersion work, taking an ice cold shower daily. He practices meditation, and gets a healthy amount of sleep. Diet-wise, he doesn’t count macros and micros, simply eating until he is full and avoiding processed and packaged foods. Asked for advice for readers looking to do a January reset, he says, “The key is to just get started. It’s 100% about not doing too much. Start with simple things and go from there. Once you’ve established a habit, then add on. It’s not easy being fit and having a busy lifestyle, but it’s possible.”

No Time for Yoga Class? No problem! Transform your day with an at-home yoga ritual ARTICLE BY BREE O’BRIEN WITH BRETT LARKIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANTHONY PONCE DE LEON

B R E T T

L A R K I N

Local Founder of Uplifted Yoga and author of newly released book, Yoga Life: Habits, Poses, and Breathwork to Channel Joy Amidst the Chaos

Brett Larkin tells Bellevue Lifestyle how to make it happen.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE TIME FOR A 60MINUTE YOGA CLASS?

A personalized 20-minute at-home yoga ritual is actually more potent for you than a generic group class.

WHAT IF I’M BRAND NEW TO YOGA OR NOT FLEXIBLE?

Quizzes throughout my book guide you to “soulmate” postures based on what you’re experiencing physically, mentally and emotionally. Together we design your most potent practice (flexibility not required) while sprinkling in daily “Yoga Habits”.

HOW CAN I BRING YOGA “OFF THE MAT”?

My favorite yoga habits: Take a big siiiiigh out of your mouth anytime you receive a stressful email (this extends your exhalation, soothing your nervous system); practice meditation in your car while parked in your garage (before entering the chaos of the house); and stretch while watching TV.

HOW CAN I GET MORE CONSISTENT AT HOME?

Leave your mat where you can see it. Get on it, even just to lie down. Design a modular practice tailored toward your needs and goals. Finally, find poses that feel so good you crave doing them.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME WORK FOR YOU

Learning to Let Go ARTICLE BY BREE O’BRIEN WITH LILIAN CHIU

26

EXP E RT H E LP | HO ME SE RVICE S

“

A s hu m a n s , we at t ac h fe e l i n g s t o ou r o b j e c t s a n d t h at c a n m a ke it h a rd e r fo r u s t o le t go of t h e m .”

We know many of our readers start the New Year off with goals around making their living spaces more organized, so we connected with Lilian Chiu, Owner of Kirkland-based Peony Professional Organizing. Peony has been around for five-and-a-half years, and helps busy families and professionals eliminate clutter and set up systems so they no longer feel overwhelmed. “With the pandemic, the use of our homes has shifted,” says Chiu, “It really needs to be a productive space.” Chiu notes, “As humans, we attach feelings to our objects and that can make it harder for us to let go of them. We guide our clients in recognizing what to keep, and what to let go.” She provided Bellevue Lifestyle five tips to help us start the year out with only the things that serve us, and without the things that don’t.

TIPS FOR STARTING THE NEW YEAR ORGANIZED:

1. Tackle the most frustrating space first: In your home, what’s the one space that’s most driving you nuts? Start there! It could be as small as clearing out a junk drawer (how did we accumulate so many cords!), or a bigger project like decluttering your closet and getting all matching hangers so that it feels more visually cohesive and you can get ready for the day with ease. Whatever the project is, tackling the most frustrating space first will give you motivation and confidence to move forward with other areas in your home. 2. Work on the mail pile for 30 seconds every day: The most-asked question I get from clients is: “What organizer do you recommend for the mail pile?” Nothing!

A small habit change will help you tackle the mail pile in the long run. When you get the mail, take 30 seconds right then to sort through it. Most of the time, you’ll find junk mail that can be recycled, sensitive items that you don’t want to keep but must be shredded, and mail that you have to act on (that should be moved to where you’ll deal with it, like your desk). Doing this every day will keep the mail pile at bay. 3. Create a system for incoming kids’ schoolwork and artwork: Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with the amount of stuff that comes home with your kids from school. If your space allows, create a bin for each kid so they can drop off their schoolwork and artwork. Once the bin is full, go through it and keep only favorites. I suggest moving those into a sentimental bin that each child keeps in their room. For artwork that you’re ok with not keeping the original, I suggest sending them to Artkive so they can be turned into an art book or a framed mosaic. 4. Start a donation bin: Designate an area for a donation bin. As the kids outgrow clothing or you replace your teflon pans with cast iron ones, these items that are no longer serving you can go in the donation bin. Once it’s full, take it to your preferred charity. 5. Label: As you declutter and organize your spaces, don’t forget to label. This keeps the whole family on the same page about where things are stored. peonyproorganizing.com

CAR REVIEW BY DAD ARTICLE BY MAX BAKER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MERCEDES-BENZ

The GLS 580 is a refined, fast, and tech savvy SUV. This family car has all boxes ticked. As a parent of two kiddos (6 years + 2 years) moving the family around in a comfortable, safe, and (my personal favorite) fast vehicle is something that makes day-to-day life a lot more enjoyable. Not sure if it was our son’s immediate yells to voice command for “Hey Mercedes, please change the lights to red!” or my wife quickly adapting to requesting the passenger seat massage that made us all like getting into the 580. With the captain’s chairs in the middle row it was easy to put the kids’ car seats in. They had tons of leg room and there was plenty of space for hauling our family’s gear around (like a Portlandia episode). The 580 gets a Dad thumbs up. It is not an AMG GT Coupé, but it is not supposed to be.

Summarized Specs: • Latest generation of MBUX • MBUX Augmented Reality function • Burmester® sound system • Handy kick function to open the rear • 4.0-litre V8 with twin-scroll turbochargers and ISG
