LIFESTYLE LETTER

All Aboard The Santa Bandwagon! When I was eight years old (roughly eight dog-years ago), I began asking questions about the guy in the red suit and his sleigh filled with gifts. It’s not that I doubted his existence, but I couldn’t comprehend how he could travel the world in one night and deliver all that stuff to all those kids. I may have been young, but I’d seen enough of the world from riding in the back of my parents’ Ford Country Squire station wagon to know that it was quite a feat. Eventually, Christmas Eve rolled around and, as usual, we went to my grandparents’ house to hang out, eat and chatter about the big day ahead. But there were some side conversations that night with my cousins and I told them what I had been thinking. Turns out, I wasn’t alone. On the way home I pressed my parents on the issue and, smart kid that I was, challenged them to prove to me that Santa Claus was real. They were silent like the night. And that’s all I needed to know. This whole thing was a ruse! So, we pulled into the driveway, walked up to the house, opened the door, turned on the lights and in our living room was the largest pile of presents I’d ever seen. And in the middle of it all, my brand-new red Schwinn Stingray! In mere minutes I had hopped off the Santa bandwagon and climbed back aboard. And I’ve been there ever since. Talk about an about face! The fact that our family is Jewish made this Christmas miracle even more remarkable. Years later I learned that Jolly Old Saint Nick had outsourced the job that night to one of the older kids in the neighborhood. And that made sense because how could Santa deliver the goods if not for his cadre of helpers? I think back to that Christmas every year at this time. And as much fun as it is getting gifts, nothing compares to the excitement of gift giving. The older I get, the more agonizing the wait to give becomes. So that’s my message this year. For birthdays, for holidays or for no reason at all, give whenever you can. It’s good for the soul.

IMPROVE MOBILITY INCREASE RANGE OF MOTION

The SpongeBob Musical Sells Out at Lawson High School

REDUCE INFLAMMATION

Lawson High School’s new Performing Arts Center opened to packed houses for its presentation of The SpongeBob Musical, November 3-5. “The goal was to provide a fun, community and family friendly production that left the audience smiling,” says Lawson theatre director, Jamie Emery. “I think we are well on our way to being the best of the best in high school theatre.” The spring show, Chicago: Teen Edition, is coming April 4-6. Photography by Lindsey Baydoun While traditional stretching methods attempt to make you more “flexible,” we work to adjust the stretch reflex. This way, the Stretch Zone Method gradually increases your active range of motion. Consider how a car seatbelt works. If pulled too quickly, the belt locks. If the belt is forced, you are just stretching the material itself, and that’s where injury happens. When a car seatbelt is pulled smoothly and controlled, the belt will fully extend. It’s the same with your body’s stretch reflex.

The program will feature several familiar pieces of traditional music that tell the story of Christmas, plus a Heimermann original in which children of church members will sing along with the choir and orchestra. The concert isn’t the only Christmas program scheduled for this month. SVC will present a Candlelight Communion service on Christmas Eve at 4:30 p.m. “It’s just a sweet, simple Christmas Eve service,” says SVC Administrator, John Avery. “Christmas is such a hectic time of year, but by Christmas Eve, all the hubbub is done. Gifts are fun, but this is a wonderful time to get together and to enjoy the real meaning of the season.” This will be SVC’s third annual Christmas Concert. The public is invited and admission is free. The Fellowship Hall features open seating for up to 450 guests and a capacity gathering is expected. Additional information is available online at StephensValleyChurch.com.

From parties and shopping to dining and entertainment, there’s no escaping the sounds of the season. But sometimes it’s nice to escape the whirlwind of activity so that the music may be enjoyed in the meaningful context for which it’s intended. If that sounds appealing, then the Stephens Valley Church Christmas Concert will be music to your ears, and soothing for your soul. This year’s concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 10 at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Stephen’s Valley Church (SVC), 6000 Pasquo Road in Bellevue. “We’ll have a choir made up of Stephens Valley Church members and a full orchestra, with about 25 pieces,” says Charlie Heimermann, SVC’s interim choir director. “Most of the musicians in the orchestra are with the (Nashville) Symphony or other orchestral groups from around town. I’ve worked with many of them previously and on a record we’ve just made.”

BRINGING HOPE TO HAITI HOW A BELLEVUE NON-PROFIT HAS CONTINUED TO SUPPLY MEDICAL AID TO THE UNDERSERVED FOR OVER 20 YEARS

ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

While Haiti may seem a world away from Middle Tennessee, a Bellevuebased non-profit is working diligently to bring medical care to the people there. Approximately two and a half hours west of Port-Au-Prince in the town of Petite Rivière de Nippes, the Visitation Hospital Foundation (VHF), is building medical facilities in this underserved rural community. Bellevue resident and VHF Founder and Executive Director Theresa Patterson was moved to start helping those in Haiti after hearing a speaker at her church in the late 1970s share about the need there. Her first trip to Haiti in 1978 sparked her passion to continue working to help people there, eventually leading her to form VHF in 1999. After a fundraising campaign in 2003, construction was finally able to begin in 2007 and VHF opened its clinic doors the following year. “Haiti remains the poorest country in the Latin America and the Caribbean region and among the poorest countries in the world,” says Patterson. “The poverty rate in Haiti is 56 percent of the population living on less than $1 a day. Haiti is also among the countries with the greatest inequality in the region. This is largely due to two-thirds of the poor living in rural areas and the adverse conditions for agricultural production, creating a welfare gap between urban and rural areas.”

Fran Rajotte (left) and Theresa Patterson of Visitation Hospital Foundation.

Patterson along with VHF Board President Fran Rajotte and their team and board have worked to build an outpatient clinic to bring aid to this previously underserved area. “[We] offer a wide spectrum of medical and dental services, midwifery, emergency medicine, diagnostics, community health workers, mobile clinics, and pharmacy services. For just $2.25 per patient visit, patients receive a diagnosis, blood work, treatment and medications,” says Rajotte, who began working with the organization in 2002.

“When you witness firsthand walking among the people of Haiti and seeing the needs of the people there, there is no turning back,” says Rajotte. “I really believe that what we do in this community has given several generations of people the chance at a better quality of life.” Their all-Haitian staff of over 30 people has treated well over 300,000 patient cases. “The most common diseases or maladies seen at Visitation Clinic on a daily basis are anemia, urinary infections, gastrointestinal diseases, hypertension, influenza, malaria

and parasites,” says Patterson. Additionally, chronic diseases and skin diseases are common issues, as well as stomach sickness due to the lack of potable water and unsanitary food preparation. This led them to make a water filtration system one of their first big contributions, which has helped the community immensely. The organization plans to begin building an ambulatory surgery center in late

2024 with the initial plan to focus on general surgery, urology, and ophthalmology, as well as performing C-sections, cataract surgery, and some orthopedics. VHF is currently raising funds for medical equipment, instrumentation, staffing, furnishings, and medical supplies. Additional information, including a donation portal, is available at VisitationHospital.org.

“AS MOM & POP AS IT GETS” MEET THE TEAM BEHIND WARNER PARKS FAMILY DENTAL

ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHARON ASBY

FAM ILY CA R E | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Together with his wife, Anne Walker, Dr. Bob Wilson, DMD, has had a milestone year. They celebrated the first anniversary of their dental practice, Warner Parks Family Dental, and also the birth of their first child, a baby girl. Now, this family-owned business is looking ahead to a new year and all the excitement it’s sure to bring. A Georgia native, Dr. Wilson attended the University of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia, completing a residency program where he learned how to do dental implants, work with medically compromised patients, and treat complex dental cases. He joined a thriving multi-generational, family-owned practice in Georgia, where one of his greatest lessons was learned.

“I could tell that they were not just doing dentistry; they were really taking care of their patients and in practice for the right reasons,” he says. “It was very down-to-earth. They were not intimidating, and at the same time extremely professional and kind. I knew coming out that I wanted to learn from someone who had established this type of practice. A lot of our philosophies lined up.” After six years honing his skills in Georgia, Dr. Wilson met his wife, Anne Walker, a Vanderbilt graduate and Nashville native. They moved to Nashville with a dream to open a dental practice with the same honest, patient-focused approach. In November 2022, that dream became a reality. They acquired a practice from a retiring dentist, renovated the interiors, and upgraded the equipment to state-of-the-art technology for diagnostic care and patient education. The team expanded to include front office manager Kayla Jackson, who brings 10+ years of customer care to her daily interactions with patients, and dental hygienist Megan Barrows, a Kansas City-born, but Bellevue-based Navy veteran. “One thing I’ve always thought of in life is to focus on the quality and the quantity will follow,” Dr. Wilson adds. “We give special attention to our patients, really listen to them, and ensure we’re doing the best work we can do. We never judge our patients, we’re just so proud of them for taking the first step in showing up to receive care.” CONTINUED >

Why Warner Parks? The Wilsons have a Boykin spaniel, Henry, who would become an integral part of the story of their practice. He loves to run and play fetch, which led the pair to explore all of Nashville’s public parks, Edwin and Percy Warner included. “We decided to call it Warner Parks Family Dental because it was our goal to create a very calming and peaceful experience, just like visiting the Warner Parks,” Dr. Wilson adds. “It’s regenerative, it promotes health and being outdoors. We try to let people know we aren’t corporate, but a local, family-owned practice.” Warner Parks Family Dental offers a variety of services, from family care, to cosmetic, surgical, and emergency services. In addition, the team is proud to be a supporter of local schools and of course, local parks. “Because our practice is privately owned, we are able to provide excellent continuity of care for our patients,” Dr. Wilson says. “It allows us to have a really personal relationship and custom experience. I want to be your trustworthy, hometown dentist.” WarnerParksFamilyDental.com

Hiding In Plain Sight WITH PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES LIKE G.O.A.L!, FORD ICE CENTER IS ELEVATING ITS PROFILE IN THE BELLEVUE COMMUNITY Much is made of hidden gems but the Ford Ice Center-Bellevue is unique in that category. In terms of sheer size, it’s arguably the most visible structure in Bellevue. But of the more than 1 million visitors who pass through its doors every year, relatively few are from the immediate area. So, how can something so conspicuous qualify as hidden? “Most of our guests come from out of town for the different tournaments and events that we host,” says Alita Petras, Ford Ice Center’s Business Operations Manager. “We want to raise the facility’s profile within the community so that more people from Bellevue will learn about our programs and what they have to offer.” One way they’re trying to do that is through G.O.A.L! or Get Out And Learn! G.O.A.L! is an entry level program for children ages 4-9 with no prior hockey experience. Classes are capped at 30 participants who receive on ice instruction from USA Hockey certified coaches. G.O.A.L! programs are held on five consecutive Tuesdays at various times throughout the year with the next program running January 9 through February 6. Each class is co-ed but there are two girls-only programs that are led by female coaches.

Ford Ice Center Business Operations Manager, Alita Petras (right) and her fiancé, Matthew Danczak.

“Hey, ice time and equipment are expensive, so there’s gotta be a catch!” you must be thinking. But there is no catch. There is no cost to participate in G.O.A.L! Once enrolled, children are outfitted with equipment (helmet, pads, skates, jersey and stick) that they borrow for each session. And once they graduate, the jersey and stick are theirs to keep. They’ll also receive a swag bag of Nashville Predators goodies. If your child is an absolute beginner who has never been on the ice, you might want to consider enrollment in a Learn To Skate program prior to registering for G.O.A.L! For a $134 fee, Learn To Skate students will receive more attentive instruction in the form of one coach for every four students. Learn To Skate consists of a weekly 30-minute lesson for six consecutive weeks. Skates and helmets are provided, and participants have access to unlimited public skating at no additional cost while they are enrolled. Petras says that G.O.A.L! and Learn To Skate are just two facets of the Predators’ ongoing and unwavering commitment to grow the game.

“Most NHL teams do not offer this type of programming and most don’t own their own community rinks like the Preds do (in Bellevue, Antioch and Clarksville), so this is super rare,” she says. In addition to open public skating, skating classes and hockey leagues are available at Ford Ice Center for all ages and skill levels. There are two rinks with open seating for spectators, event spaces for private gatherings like meetings or birthday parties, and a fully stocked pro shop. At the hub of it all is the spacious and inviting Draft Picks restaurant and bar that is open to the public daily at 4 p.m. and 11 a.m. on weekends. There are many TVs for watching all the Preds games and, with bowl season upon us, you could spend an entire day and well into the evening with food, beverages and entertainment for all. “We have a fully loaded cable package so, if the game is televised, you can probably watch it here,” says Petras. “And since we have league play late into the evening and well past midnight, Draft Picks is open late as well.” Petras’ enthusiasm for Ford Ice Center comes naturally. A Cleveland native and former hockey player herself, she first visited Nashville to watch the Predators as far back as 2014. “As an organization, the Preds are so involved in the community; other teams don’t scratch the surface,” she says. “I’ve been to other organizations, and the Predators are always hosting community events. They are so focused on the city so, when I visited, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.” She went as far as applying for a job and interviewing on one of her visits. Within weeks she was hired for a part-time position, moved to town and moved up through the ranks. She and her fiancé, Matthew Danczak, whom she met while both were playing hockey, live in the Bellevue area. “Playing the game and working at rinks prepared me for this opportunity,” she says. “There are 30 rinks in Cleveland but nothing that compares to what we have here. The programming is very affordable, the amenities are first class and the location, hotels and restaurants make it very accessible.” One might even say that Ford Ice Center-Bellevue is a gem of its own accord.

UPCOMING PROGRAM DATES Upcoming G.O.A.L! programs at Ford Ice Center-Bellevue begin on January 9, February 20, March 26 and April 9. Girls-only programs begin January 11 and March 21. Additional information is available at the rink or by calling 615.744.6640. A registration portal for Ford Ice Center programs is available online at nhl.com/predators/fordicecenter/goal-program. Giving Campaign

2023 46

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
