FOR AS LONG AS PHOTOGRAPHER TURNED FASHION AND LIFESTYLE BLOGGER BETHANY MARIE CAN REMEMBER, SHE HAS ALWAYS LOVED PUTTING TOGETHER OUTFITS. Even as a young toddler, she would throw tantrums if anyone else dressed her; she always wanted to dress herself.

At the young age of 3, she began putting together outfits for herself.

“I started seeing color flows and began putting things together to make an outfit,” she says.

Growing up, her annual birthday gift from her mother was always money to go shopping for clothes.

“There was never a time I didn’t love clothes; it is something that has always been a part of my life," Bethany says.

Fast-forward a few decades and Bethany now makes a living sharing the outfits she puts together both on herself and from behind the camera. Fashion and photography have always worked hand-in-hand for her from the beginning. Before Pinterest or Instagram, Bethany began posting outfits and pictures of herself on lookbook.nu, a website that allows users to join and share their fashion looks. She was also shooting model tests for modeling agencies in Seattle and found herself helping the models decide what to wear. That turned into bringing outfits to shoots to help style and outfit models for the shoot, and it was a turning point for Bethany where she found a deeper love for fashion as her profile began growing in the fashion community.

When Instagram launched, Bethany jumped on the social media platform, posting photos of herself in outfits, mindful of the setting or background of these photos. Brands that were on the platform began noticing her and began reaching out and sending her free items to wear and promote on Instagram. She also saw that some of the users she followed on lookbook.nu had begun fashion blogs. This inspired Bethany to launch her own fashion blog, writing about the brands that sent her products.

Despite all the goodies she was receiving, Bethany stayed true to her roots, which were planted in “thrifting,” finding hidden treasures at second-hand stores.

“As a kid, my dad would always take me thrifting, and we would try to find things," she says. "It stuck with me. When I was young, designer denim was hugely popular. I’d go to thrift stores so I could buy some without spending tons of money. My love for shopping really is intertwined with my love for thrifting.”

And that love has created a unique niche for Bethany to exercise her passion for fashion and styling with gems she finds at local thrift stores, and to share these finds and outfits on her blog and social media accounts.

DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO TODAY AS MUCH AS YOU DID WHEN YOU STARTED? I still love it—putting outfits together, being in front of the camera, thrifting—but the blogging industry has changed a lot in the last couple of years. It’s gotten away from being about fashion and more about how to be successful on Instagram. When you have a website that relies so much on a social media platform, it can be exhausting. I love being able to be creative and sharing my love for photos and fashion, but I am not sure where the future will lead.

WHAT WOULD YOU CALL YOUR STYLE? Honestly, it’s constantly evolving. I love to have timeless pieces that are basics and can be worn for years. I also love current, trendy styles as well as lots of black, leather and gold. So, I go with how I feel: I could be in a flowy, Free People outfit one day and then a completely Pacific Northwest outfit the next. My current basic outfit is: white leather sneakers, black skinny denim and an oversized sweater with a designer handbag.

WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR THRIFTING? Look through everything. When you’re scanning items, look at the material and then the brand. The quality of the material is your first clue that it might be a designer brand. Also, look through all the sizes; oftentimes you’ll find a lot of stuff misplaced. It might take two hours, but you can leave with amazing stuff if you take the time to look.

WHAT’S YOUR METHOD OF FINDING HIGH-END AND LUXURY ITEMS? First, head straight to handbags and shoes, and look through those because it takes less time to sift through these sections. Look through everything because a lot of stuff can be hidden.

Then go to coats, then bottoms and then go through tops last because you’re least likely to find anything in that section.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THRIFT STORES IN THE AREA? + Value Village in Woodinville. I found a Dolce & Gabbana cropped tweed blazer for $4 and two pairs of Prada boots for $14 each. + Ballard Consignment in Ballard. I found a beautiful pair of black Celine trousers that looked brand-new for $30. Head to the back corner of the store for the clothing section. + Value Village in Everett. I found a Max Mara plaid wrap-style coat for $11 that looked nearly brand-new and a pair of Chanel slides with a small heel for $30. + Goodwill in Lynnwood. I found a Max Mara polka-dot silk wrap dress for $10. + Value Village in Crown Hill. This is the only one in Seattle I go to because it’s not picked over and overpriced like you will find at most places in Seattle proper. + Buffalo Exchange in Seattle. I found a Fear of God pea coat for $65 that retails for $600.

BY 2050, IT IS ESTIMATED THERE WILL BE MORE PLASTIC IN OUR OCEANS THAN FISH. While technology races on—from allowing us to carry mini computers in our pockets, to prosthetic wings and even self-driving cars passing us on the road—there are some major issues affecting the one and only world we live in.

Dr. Libbi Finnessy of Bellevue Dental Health learned a similar staggering fact about the dental industry that was simply unacceptable to her. The Bellevue dentist discovered that more people have cell phones than toothbrushes. "How can this be?” she pondered.

Clearly, she was nettled and wasn’t going to let this go. After a dental mission trip to Guatemala—seeing, touching and experiencing firsthand what dental disparagement was at large— she decided it was time to make a change. WHEN YOU THINK OF WASHINGTON STATE, A VARIETY OF WORDS MAY COME TO MIND: RAIN, TECH, HIPSTER, COFFEE—AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE GREAT OUTDOORS. The Evergreen State offers a wide variety of outdoor adventures to choose from, all year long.

Whether it's backpacking, kayaking, sailing, surfing, rock climbing, hiking, skiing, mountain biking; if it's an outdoor activity, you can probably find it here.

Not only does this beautiful state offer a plethora of options for outdoor fun, it is also most likely only a few hours away by car, if even that long.

Washington is overflowing with incredible scenery. Most of the state is a majestic sight to behold. On the west side of the state, you will find the Olympic peninsula, home to the Hoh Rainforest, the only rainforest in the lower 48 states, as well as several lakes and beaches. To the north, you will find the North Cascades National Park and Mount Baker with plenty of hiking, kayaking and skiing options. The San Juan Islands are also located in the northern part of Washington and is a popular summer destination for kayakers, boaters and campers.

As you head east, you enter wine country, as well as a gorgeous drive across the pass with plenty of lookout points, lakes and whitewater rafting opportunities. As you head south, you will find Mount Rainier, one of the most iconic climbs for hikers around the world. And a little farther southeast, you will run into the Columbia Gorge, where you can listen to world-renowned performers while taking in the natural aesthetics of the Gorge.

The list of possible outdoor adventures is without end. For those of us in the SeattleBellevue area, we can hike, ski or kayak without having to travel more than about an hour by car. And we are doing just that—taking advantage of all the outdoors has to offer— Lost Lake

According to The Seattle Times, the number of Seattle-area hikers has more than doubled since 2008. People are flocking to the trails, placing Seattle in the top three of the 75 major metropolitan areas nationwide for hiking. The population growth of the area plays a large role in this increase as well as social media. Our Instagram and Facebook feeds are filled with stories and photos shared by friends, family members and neighbors enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. It leaves us wanting to experience it ourselves and undoubtedly, share it on social media.

With such a tremendous increase of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts in general, mindfulness of the nature we all enjoy is paramount. A little responsibility goes a long way.

REDUCE YOUR IMPACT 01

Plan ahead and prepare. Know the rules and concerns for where you are visiting. Prepare for emergencies and extreme weather. Repackage food to minimize waste.

Familiarize yourself with the area. Bring a compass or a map. Make sure to hydrate.

Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Durable surfaces include established trails and campsites, rock, dry grasses and gravel. In popular areas, concentrate use on existing trails

and sites. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent.

Dispose of waste properly. Pack it in, pack it out. Pack out all trash, leftover food and litter.

Leave what you find. Preserve the past: examine but do not touch cultural or historic structures and artifacts. Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.

Minimize campfire impact. Where fires are permitted, keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand.

Respect wildlife. Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them. Never feed animals. Control pets at all times, or leave them at home.

Be considerate of other visitors. Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience. Be courteous.

Let nature's sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises.

Perched on the hillside above Elliott Bay and steps from Pike Place Market, Aerlume shines with light, air and sweeping views of the sound and sky.

Executive Chef and Culinary Director Maggie Trujillo worked with Chef Jason Wilson to create a menu inspired by the changing array of seasonal ingredients prepared with vibrant flavors and seasons.

“Our menu is based on seasonality and local relationships with our farming partners,” Jason says. “We have developed a custom farming program at Fall City Farms which allows us to plan and grow some really special and unique ingredients.”

Maggie creatively utilizes every part of a the plant to make sure those fresh, tasty ingredients don’t go to waste.

“A fun challenge and something I really enjoy as a chef is to see how much of the plant I can utilize,” she says. “Cauliflower, for example: we can roast or pickle the florets, make purees or pasta fillings with the stems, and make kraut from the leaves.”

Describing her cooking style as “clean, comforting and creative,” Maggie and the team at Aerlume not only source locally, but also work closely with Amanda Marino at Fall City Farms to plan out specific crops that will be grown.

“With this planning, we commit to fully utilizing Amanda’s produce while in season and use preservation techniques for later seasons,” Maggie says.

This ensures a fresh and inventive menu year-round.

“COOKING WITH THE SEASONS IS A NATURAL APPROACH, AND WE EMBRACE IT BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT OUR COMMITMENT TO QUALITY STARTS WITH THE INGREDIENTS BEING THE BEST, HIGHEST QUALITY DICTATED BY WHEN THEY ARE GROWN AND WHEN THEY ARE AT THEIR PEAK.” With the menu already rotating a handful of times within the first few months of opening, you can continue to count on it highlighting the best bounty of the season, while keeping the majority of select main dishes the same.

Although you probably can’t singlehandedly change the environmental toll of the amount of plastic pollution that comes from that kind of number, we’ve rounded up a few simple ways you can curb your consumption and do your part toward a healthier environment.

01 PREHEAT your oven to its lowest setting.

02 CUT FABRIC into desired shapes. Using pinking shears so the fabric doesn’t fray, you can cut your fabric into any shape or size you’d like. Consider what size or
