WHEN YOU THINK OF THE WORD “MAKER,” WHAT COMES TO MIND? A quick Google search offers some ideas: a constructor, a builder, a producer, a designer, an architect, but, in its simplest terms, a person that makes or produces something. In this month’s issue, you’ll be immersed in articles that focus on just that: makers—people who produce things. You’ll see it in the art, jewelry, food and homes throughout both these pages and our community. But this concept of makers is more than just the people who create unique works of art, handcrafted jewelry, textiles or furniture, or goods you can find throughout local boutiques or on locally-maintained Etsy pages.

cent of the national average. Puesta del Sol Elementary School took first place among the participating elementary schools, with its students averaging just 2.7 grams of garbage—the weight of a penny—on contest day. Students at the other first-place schools, Sammamish High School and Chinook Middle School, generated about 14 grams of waste that day, the weight of two quarters. Bellevue Utilities and the Bellevue School District cosponsor the Green Genius Challenge each November for America Recycles Day. The 20 schools that participated, more than any other year, represented almost 14,000 students and staff. The garbage generated by the students at those

schools would average under 7 pounds for an entire year, compared to the 67 pounds of lunch waste generated annually by the average American student, according to the EPA. In the weeks leading up to contest day, staff and students used many strategies to motivate including student presentations, assemblies, posters, announcements, costumes, progress charts and competitions between grades. An updated how-to video from the city also helped. Students, teachers and even custodians taught students how to sort their stuff into compost, recyclables and trash. Schools weighed their garbage on contest day, with the schools with the lowest garbage per student winning prizes, while the waste reduction behaviors continue throughout the school year. Puesta del Sol will get lunch with the “Carbon Yeti,” Bellevue Utilities’ furry, friendly mascot. Cherry Crest Elementary took second place, with

THIS IS A STORY THAT BEGINS—AND ENDS—WITH
COFFEE.
Nine
years
ago,
Bellden Cafe owners and husband-and-wife duo Claire and Eddy Sumadiwirya first met at a coffee shop in Bellevue. What started as a blind date led to hours of conversation and, among many topics, they discussed their mutual dream of someday owning a local cafe. Three months later they were married, and four years post-wedding the couple found themselves moving to Shanghai with their 5-month-old son, Eiden. While living there, Eiden grew very sick and was hospitalized for weeks, making the family’s time abroad extremely difficult. Claire and Eddie diligently remained by their son’s side through long, taxing hours. The hospital’s community took notice and came together to support the couple with janitors and nurses bringing a cup of coffee or bowl of homemade soup to help them sustain. While the experience was challenging, Eiden soon recovered, and Claire and Eddie were once again inspired to pursue their initial dream of opening a coffee shop, a place that could foster the connection and community they felt during their stay in the hospital, simply through a cup of coffee. They returned home to Bellevue and opened Bellden Cafe in April 2017, a coffee shop with an emphasis on both specialty coffee and supporting local charities. Each quarter, the cafe creates a specialty latte, with 25-50 percent of each sale distributed to a local nonprofit. A household favorite, “Let Me Love You Latte” is a warming and bright blend of honey, cinnamon and orange that pairs exceptionally well with beans from Coava Coffee Roasters and either whole or oat milk (for the nondairy drinkers). Proceeds from the “Let Me Love You Latte” go to Jubilee Reach, a Bellevuebased nonprofit that offers mentoring, tutoring and 20 after-school club and sports activities to low-income families across 14 different school districts. The nonprofit’s mission is to make every child feel known, loved and develop a sense of belonging to something greater than self. When you visit Bellden Cafe, you can enjoy your delicious cuppa and also feel good about your contribution to the community. Bellden Cafe is located at 10527 Main St., Bellevue. THE ART OF SURRENDER
(CON TI N U ED)
When I'm working on a piece, the exterior of my life blurs and my soul moves into focus. I see myself in every painting. When I finally add heat to the wax, the edges soften, layers are revealed, and I am constantly reminded how beautifully complex life is.
28
Bellevue Lifestyle | February 2018
Ironically, her first experience in painting abstract encaustics was a “mistake” that led her on a new path. “I’d spent hours in my garage and basement pouring my emotions over a wood canvas. I was working on a gift for my sister, and I made a mistake," she says. "To salvage the encaustic wax, I heated it high enough to melt it off the board. When I started this process of reverting my work, I began to see the wax and pigments blending in an unexpected expression of deep beauty and emotional communication." This moment directly correlates with two reoccurring themes in her own life and art: vulnerability and surrender. “I wish that I would have been confident with what I know. In the beginning, I was constantly questioning the validity of my work. In the past five years, I’ve grown into my own metaphorical skin as an artist.” She encourages young artists to know their mission, connect with other artists and to never say no to any opportunity, large or small.

BEAUTIFUL VIEWS AND PROXIMITY TO CITY CENTERS OF BOTH SEATTLE AND THE EASTSIDE MAKES THE TOWN OF YARROW POINT ONE OF BELLEVUE’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER NEIGHBORHOODS. Nestled in by Lake Washington on all three sides, the Yarrow Point peninsula boasts charming homes amongst natural Pacific Northwest landscapes. Meet Ann Molitor and Zuri Hector, residents of Yarrow Point whose custom-designed and built home is eye-catching and modern, while also warm and welcoming. The couple met while attending the University of Southern California, and now call Bellevue home with their two sons, Jared, 19, and Ayden, 16. Zuri grew up in San Francisco, and Ann was born and raised in Bellevue. Jared attends Stanford University, and Ayden is a sophomore at Eastside Catholic.

FAMILY ROOM:
Furry interior accents, large couch and modern fireplace make for a homey and comfortable space.
Both Zuri and Ann are in the real estate industry. Zuri and his partner and fellow Bellevue resident Greg Arms run Milestone Northwest, an Eastside real estate development and building company. Ann, an attorney, works side by side with her four sisters and one brother running their family business, Greenbank Development—named after their family cabin on Whidbey Island. Greenbank and Milestone collaborate on several projects throughout the Eastside, including Ann’s and Zuri’s home. Their house was designed for exactly the way they live: unfussy and informal. As a result, you will not find a formal dining or living room because they are a casual bunch who host family and friends often but do so while plunked down in front of a TV with food in their laps. Their home is a mixture of contemporary design and finishes with touches of family antiques and inherited pieces.

From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO
1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate. THE STUDIO OPENED ITS FIRST SET OF DOORS 13 YEARS AGO IN DOWNTOWN BELLEVUE. Owner Cindy Linkon felt the community had an open window of opportunity for the arts and especially for fine art classes for young kids. Opening its second location at Crossroads, The Studio goes well beyond a typical art studio. Teaching ages starting at 3 1/2, The Studio caters to the individual student. “We help students get into grad school with their requirements; we’ve helped retired people who needed something as well as children with eye-hand coordination,” Cindy says. With part-time and full-time teachers, The Studio staff is highly trained in the industry of fine arts. The Studio encourages and motivates students to be well-rounded artists, and is known for teaching its young kiddos the history of art as well. Bringing more than just art classes to the public, The Studio brings beauty to the Bellevue community. The Studio is located in downtown Bellevue at 1075 Bellevue Way NE and in Crossroads Mall at 15600 NE 8th St. #0-13. For more information, visit BellevueStudio.com .
