Doesn’t that quote feel so true? Especially every time the holidays and December hit, I think we all find ourselves saying, “where did the year go?” There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings—whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, I’m often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. While I certainly strive to live in the moment, I always find myself looking toward the future. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels they’re living a fast-paced lifestyle, and that the day to day demands make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us. My hope this December is we all can aim to leave a little margin in our lives, allowing us to slow down a little bit, and make time to savor the moments with those we love. This issue is full of ideas to enjoy your time with family and friends—maybe plan a trip to the mountains to enjoy outdoor adventures with a quick drive over to iconic holiday town Leavenworth or a short flight to a world-class ski area in the charming small town of Whitefish, Montana. SINCE OPENING ITS DOORS IN 1950, CANLIS RESTAURANT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR CRAFTING MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES FOR FINE- DINING ENTHUSIASTS FROM THROUGHOUT THE REGION. But in the last few years brothers, Mark and Brian Canlis, have pushed their New Year’s Eve party over the top as well. “The point of fine dining is that you have thought of everything. And if a fine dining restaurant is going to throw a party, it has to be the most considered party you have ever been to,” said Mark Canlis. This year, Canlis Restaurant will be hosting Seattle's most exclusive scene and truly a one-of-a-kind New Year’s Eve party. What used to be their biggest moneymaking night of the year is now also the most exclusive New Year’s Eve party in Seattle. The restaurant shuts down for 24 hours prior to the event in order to prepare for a night of discovery for those fortunate enough to have a reservation. “We have the best service team in the country. If we can’t do it right with our own staff we bring in actors to help create the vibe,” said Canlis.

The party is concocted over late night staff meetings in the ‘tiki lounge’ (what the patrons would know as the restaurant bar). “As long as it doesn’t hurt the restaurant, I think it’s very on-brand,” said Canlis. Some ideas floating around go back to their Hawaiian roots where their first restaurant, Canlis Charcoal Broiler, which opened in 1946 in Honolulu, HI. “The Hawaiian legacy has always been a part of brand,” said Canlis. Will there be sand castles? With a smile he explains how “sand has different qualities, different grains” and so much of the party is about discovery. Everything is considered, from the shape of the ice cube and what’s sitting on top of it, to the glass it sits in. “I probably drank out of 30 different glasses to find this shape, " said Canlis How to get an invite to the most exclusive party in Seattle?
